HOUSE OF JASMINES Salta, Argentina A stunning 120-year-old ranch at the foot of the Andes, once the home of actor Robert Duvall, has been turned into a boutique retreat that combines hacienda-style architecture with a crisp mountain ambiance. The expansive, 300-acre grounds are Eden-like, overrun with aromatic rose and vegetable gardens, eucalyptus trees and blossoming jasmine. Sitting next to the Arenales River, the views across the valley to the Salta mountain range are spellbinding. Peace and tranquillity abound in the timeless colonial ambiance. Inside, the white-on-white adobe casita offers a stunning mix of classic French design and chic northern Argentine style. An exquisite and cosy living room with open fireplace is a wonderful place from which to take in the expansive landscapes. Predominantly white, with cowhide leather tabletops, the winter garden is magical and pristine. Bedrooms are tastefully decorated, boasting plenty of rustic colonial charm . There are embroidered sheets, cowhide rugs, antique slipper chairs and loveseats covered in white linen and draped with indigenous textiles. Don’t miss breakfast, a delight of fresh juices, fruit, yoghurt, homemade breads and pastries, with eggs cooked to order, all served with the local delicacy of cayote jam. The restaurant features a very large open fireplace, earthen oven where guests watch meat grilling while enjoying breathtaking views of the Andres. The cuisine is of a hearty regional nature, showcasing fresh produce from the ranch’s own orchard and gardens. Outside is a magnificent heated swimming pool. The wonderful spa offers treatments with names such as Princesa Inca (the Inca princess), Amanecer Salteño (Salta’s daybreak), Flores para un rey (flowers for a king) and Cinco sentidos (five senses), which use minerals and herbs from the area. Offsite riding is a must in order to enjoy the glorious Salta countryside where valleys, canyons, forests, historic settlements and vineyards are on display.
