You can use canned beans, but dried beans taste better and are more economical. I have no idea where my mother found this recipe or where Black Dog CafĂŠ is (I found several with a Google search). Every time I prepare this meal, I think of her. She devoted her life to helping others and would be happy to know that this recipe was included in a book to benefit low-income people.
