PM launches MNP service

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 20 (AGENCIES): Finally! Looks like the Indian Government and the people have played enough of the waiting game. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is supposed to roll out number portability for mobile phones today at the Vigyan Bhavan official convention centre in New Delhi. So what’s in it for the average mobile phone user? If you’re really fried with your current service provider due to coverage issues or tariff plans, you can change to another service provider. Your number stays the same, so you won’t have to notify all your buddies about your “change of number”. All it takes is a mere Rs. 19 and about seven days (fifteen days for people in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast) while your switch over to the new service provider is happening. You don’t have to worry when your number goes offline for a couple of hours between 12 pm and 5 am, because it’s just a routine procedure. What if your new provider is as bad as or even worse than the previous one? Well, you still have to stick to the current plan for three months after which you can switch again. The portability is pretty flexible, which means you can switch from a current prepaid connection to a postpaid one with the new service provider. There’s also compatibility between CDMA and GSM phones so that won’t be any kind of an issue whatsoever. The slight mess up is that you can switch only within your current service area. Which means, your numActors Preity Zinta and Anil Kapoor, left, share the stage in Toronto dur- ber in Mumbai cannot be ported to a ing the official announcement that the International Indian Film Academy service in Delhi or vice versa. Govt says no quick fix for black money

NEW DELHI, JANUARY 20 (AGENCIES): After receiving flak from the Supreme Court and Opposition parties, Congress-led UPA government finally called for a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Jan 20. This meeting comes a day after the SC questioned government’s disinterest in disclosing the details of Indians, those who have money deposited in overseas banks. However, PM Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, announced that the government could not reveal any details over the black money issue, as it would entail violation of India’s treaty obligations with other countries and jurisdictions. “There is no instant solution to bring back what is called black money. We have got some information and that has been provided to us for use in the collection of taxes,” Singh said. Meanwhile Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that he would very soon call for a press conference to clear about the government’s stand over the black money issue. Well known lawyer Ram Jethamalani moved the SC to sought directions to the union government to take action over the report, that Germany was willing to share details of Indians having accounts in banks based in Liechtenstein. According to an international group over $462 billion of Indian money is being lying in foreign banks. There is no doubt if the stashed money is retrieved it would bring about a miraculous metamorphosis in Indian conditions.

MELBOURNE, JANUARY 20 (PTI): Dubbing Pakistan as the “epicentre of terrorism,” India on Thursday slammed it for its inaction against the Mumbai attacks perpetrators, saying it has not been able to punish any of those accused of masterminding the terror strikes. “Pakistan should be sensitive to few of our concerns. One of our concerns is terrorism and how Pakistan deals with terror and terrorists,” External Affairs Minister S M Krishna told the Indian media here after an interaction with the Indian community. His comments came in reaction to a question on recent remarks made by Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Quershi, who favoured a constructive and productive dialogue with India to resolve all out-

On the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai by Pakistan-based terrorists, Mr. Krishna said “they (Islamabad) have not been able to punish any of those accused of masterminding, conspiring for that attack. When I went to Islamabad (in July last year) I conveyed that to Foreign Minister Quershi with passion. “I think public opinion back in India will feel assuaged when those culprits, who are responsible for those attacks in Mumbai, are brought to justice.” Pakistan has arrested seven suspects, including LeT operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, over the Mumbai attacks, but their trial has been mired in controversies and delays. Mr. Krishna also said that India wanted to see a stable

In MP, babus sleep on bed of cash

BHOPAL, JANUARY 20 (AGENCIES): In ‘bimaru’ Madhya Pradesh, bank lockers of bureaucrats and government officials are bursting with cash and gold. An IAS couple here owns 25 flats and 400 acres of land. A middle-ranking engineer’s wife owns three houses and has more than 10 kg gold in her bank locker. And wherever the income tax department conducts a raid, so much cash is unearthed that counting machines have to be brought in. This week, the I-T department submitted two

appraisal reports to the Lokayukta and the state government on earlier raids. One report claimed that a search of official residence of an IAS couple Arvind and Tinoo Joshi on Feb 4, 2010 revealed unaccounted wealth of Rs 360 crore. Cash and foreign currency found was too much to be counted manually — machines counted Rs 3 crore in cash and Rs 7 lakh in foreign currency. Gold worth Rs 67 lakh kept in a suitcase was also seized. Documents recovered from their possession revealed that the 1979 Mad-

hya Pradesh cadre IAS couple had purchased 25 flats. The family paid a life insurance premium of Rs 3.5 crore, speculative trading for 274 crore and bought stock specific shares for Rs 3 crore. Following the raids the couple was suspended. Last Monday, the I-T department opened two lockers belonging to the wife of a PWD executive engineer Ashok Kumar Jain and found 7.8 kg of gold mostly in bars and Rs 1.6 crore in cash. One year ago, Jain, posted in Narsinghpur district, drew a salary of less than Rs 20,000 per month.

Ashok Jain has been booked for amassing wealth disproportionate to his income. The health scam raids conducted three-and-half years ago were more shocking. At the residence of former health director, Yogiraj Sharma, notes were falling out of washing machines, wardrobes, quilts, pillows, bed-sheets and ‘masala’ dabbas. The former health director’s family slept on mattresses stuffed with notes. That day in September 2007, machines counted 1.75 crore in Indian and Rs 6 lakh in foreign currency there.

to rape: BSP MLA’s wife

LUCKNOW, JANUARY 20 (PTI): Claiming that BSP MLA Purshottam Naresh Dwiwedi was “physically unable” to commit rape, his wife Asha Thursday demanded DNA and medical test to prove his involvement in the assault on a Dalit teenager in Banda. “My husband is a patient of sugar and blood pressure for the last 18 years and his left kidney is also not working. With existing physical condition he cannot rape and being his wife I can say this with certainty,” Asha told reporters here. “I demand that DNA and medical test of my husband should be conducted immediately,” she said. Alleging that a political conspiracy was being hatched against her husband by his political adversaries, Asha also demanded a CB-CID probe into the case. Claiming that theft charges against the girl were true, Asha said that the accused was arrested in front of 500 people and the stolen mobile was also recovered from her possession. “After her arrest, when police took statement of the girl in Banda jail, she didn’t said anything about my husband. In fact she levelled allegations against her own father,” she alleged. Asha said that even the girl’s medical examination failed to establish that she was either raped or assaulted. “Persons, whose names were taken by the girl, have

We are taking the Banda rape case very seriously: Mayawati LUCKNOW, JANUARY 20 (AGENCIES): Uttar Pradesh CB-CID on Thursday filed a chargesheet against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Purushottam Naresh Dwivedi for allegedly raping a Dalit girl. In a damage control mode, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati announced filing of chargesheet against the BSP MLA in a press conference in Lucknow. Mayawati said that her government has taken the case “very seriously”. She also announced fast track hearing of the Banda rape case. Mayawati admitted that the theft charges levelled against the girl by the MLA were false and announced that ASP Banda and jailor of Banda jail have been suspended. She also blamed political opponents of tarnishing her government’s name. Earlier on Tuesday, the High Court had allowed a two-member committee to meet the rape victim. The committee comprising of People’s Union for Civil Liberties volunteer Vandana Mishra and advocate Deeba Siddiqui will submit its report to the court on Friday. The Dalit girl was allegedly raped on December 10-11. no association with us neither they ever visited our house,” she claimed. She alleged that by implicating an MLA is a false case the opposition parties conspire to defame the government. “I request Behenji (Mayawati) to order a CB-CID probe against those conspiring against my husband and family and take stern action against them,” she said. “If justice is not done to my family, I will not be able to bear the stigma and will commit suicide,” she added. Dwiwedi’s son Mayank also alleged that the conspiracy was hatched by

Sabarimala stampede report says warnings ignored

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JANUARY 20 (AGENCIES): The Kerala police, Travancore Devaswom Board (which manages the Sabarimala temple) and the state forest department today filed their reports on the January 14 stampede - which killed 102 pilgrims – in the state high court. ( Read: Lack of coordination between various depts: HC on Sabarimala stampede. While the board alleged that there was no adequate security arrangement to ensure safety of pilgrims in Pulmedu – near Vandiperiyar in Idukki district - where the stampede occurred, the police report filed by the DGP claimed that there were over 250 cops in the area to manage the crowd. The state police also said it did not have the permission to make security arrangements as Pulmedu fell within the protected Periyar Tiger Reserve and added that the unprecedented rush had contributed to the mishap. The Forest Department too claimed that its personnel were present in strength in Pumledu on the fateful day. The director of the Periyar Tiger Reserve has already

attributed the tragedy to an awkwardly parked autorickshaw and jeep on the grasslands atop the Uppupara hillock. Meanwhile, the high court today sought to know why pilgrims were allowed into Pulmedu if it was indeed within the precincts of the Tiger Reserve. The stampede which also left scores injured occurred when pilgrims were returning from Pulmedu after the Makara Vilakku ritual when a lamp is lit in the woods coinciding with the passage of the sun from the zodiac Dhanu (Sagittarius) to Makara (Capricorn). Taking suo moto cognizance of the issue, a division bench of the high court sought reports from the state police, Devaswom Board and forest department on what led to the mishap, the scale of which shocked the entire country. The Pilgrimage which records the second largest congregation of pilgrims in the world had recorded an unprecedented rush this time. According to the Devaswom Board, the number of pilgrims and the revenue went up almost 20 percent this season.

the political opponents of the MLA. “I can’t take the names at this juncture, but this conspiracy started immediately after my father was named as the coordinator for Banda Assembly seat,” he alleged. The Dalit girl was allegedly raped on December 10-11 at the residence of 48-year-old Dwivedi, who represents Naraini seat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. She escaped from the MLA’s house on December 12 when the MLA allegedly attempted rape for the third time and was arrested same day on theft charges.
