Mall Walking for Turkeys I’m not sure if it’s the tryptophan, the Detroit Lions losing again, or the echo remaining from all the latest news about the relatives, but the day after Thanksgiving always seems worse than the worst hangover I’ve ever had. New Years is too late for resolutions. I need to make a preThanksgiving resolution to lay off the gravy, the pies, the gravy that snuck over onto the pies, and watching the Lions lose. Yeah, I say that every year...! On normal days, walking the mall is great exercise and in some weird anti-Madison Avenue manner, relaxing. On the first trip around, the sales posters, new item displays and cute sales staff catch my eye. “I should buy something there,” I’ll say. By the third lap around, all the sales blur together, the new items seem overpriced, and the cute sales staff are glaring at me, wondering why I haven’t bought anything yet. Those are the normal days. The day after Thanksgiving opens up an alternate universe, with aliens invading earth, their spaceships carefully disguised as ATMs. Arriving at the normal time to complete my laps, I am confronted with people not members of AARP. Hundreds of them! Although they have tents and sleeping bags, I know they’re not homeless because they all have cell phones glued to their ears. At this point the gravy & pie tell me to go home & get back into bed. The sales posters have been attacked by post-modern reindeer and Santas slimmer than me. The new items all have ribbons & bells, which are still overpriced. The cute sales staff now have a look of consternation that make them uglier than the Lion’s performance. I hear the gravy & pie again. I argue back, saying I’m going to walk the calories off. I lose the argument, though, as a group of young shoppers barge by, each talking non-stop, but not to each other.
