WELCOME TO OUR TERM 2 CHALLENGE NEWSLETTER

NATIONAL COUNCIL MEMBER RETIRES

The office is in full swing! This term is one of the busiest times of the year for the Challenge team, with all four of our teams running events simultaneously across the country.

The Science and Engineering Challenge would like to recognise the contribution of the recently retired National Science and Engineering Challenge Council (NSECC) member Gavin Ralston. Gavin is a member of the Rotary E-Club of

ST COLUMBA’S GOOGLE EXPERIENCE Following their success as 2013 National Champions, 26 students from St Columba’s Anglican School Port Macquarie headed to Google Headquarters in Sydney as a prize for winning the National Final. The students, teacher Jo Duncan and Challenge Team Leader Pete Fullagar had the chance to meet Google employees and tour the facility. A highlight of the experience was an open question and answer session between the St Columba’s students and Google software developers and engineers. “The students were very interested in current topics, information security and privacy, which are quite relevant in a digital age,” noted Pete Fullagar. The students also marvelled at the staff ‘chill out zone’ complete with air hockey table, games consoles and fully stocked kitchen.

Greater Sydney and has been instrumental in establishing Challenge events in the Sydney area. He will continue in his role as regional chair.

TEACHERS RESOURCES—WATCH THIS SPACE Education officer, Carly Donohue is leading a team in the development of Teacher Resources. They relate directly to the national curriculum and are based on activities seen at both Discovery Days and Challenge Days. Keep an eye out for these resources; they will be available on our website soon.

STOP PRESS—VICTORIAN SUPER CHALLENGE

Students from St Columba’s at Google headquarters, Sydney.

The Google Experience furthers the aims of the Science and Engineering Challenge program by allowing students to gain an insight into a potential future career path in science or engineering. The visit was possible due to the support of Google Engineering Community & Outreach Program Manager, Sally-Ann Williams.

In an exciting development on the Challenge calendar, there will be a state final held in Victoria this year. Champion schools from each Victorian event will be invited to attend the Telstra Victorian Science and Engineering Super Challenge, scheduled for Tuesday 12 August in Warrnambool. This event is in conjunction with Telstra, the Rotary Clubs of the Great South Coast and Deakin University. The winner will continue on the National Final held in October this year.
