This year’s Annual Lecture, a culmination of a year of Jubilee celebrations, will include an Awards Ceremony to showcase the achievements of our members, and others, past and present, who have been involved with the AUA. As with all years we aim to entertain, inspire, challenge and possibly provoke you with a speaker of knowledge, intellect and insight. This year we are delighted to be addressed by Simon Fanshawe, broadcaster, writer and consultant, who has a keen interest in equality and diversity. Simon has been Chair of the University of Sussex Governing Council for four years and prior to this was a Council member. He studied Law at the University of Sussex from 1975-78. He was recently quoted as saying "the landscape of Higher Education is changing. And in all honesty, we don’t know what the consequences of some of the changes will be. What will guide us is having a firm grip on our fundamental purpose as a University. Universities are where you go on a journey of discovery: of self and of the world; to develop and deploy the knowledge and skills you need to live and work in the next generation; and to embrace a changing world and find your place in it". Simon will reflect on the current choppy waters of Higher Education and argue that we must mark out a clear purpose for Universities that serves society in a wider sense, and is seen to do so by the broad range of the population. Simon is a non-executive Director of Housing 21, English Touring Theatre and the Brighton Festival and Dome. He broadcasts regularly on radio and TV, has had columns in the Sunday Times, Guardian and Attitude. He runs his own consultancy based on an original approach to equality and diversity and lives in Brighton. Places at this free event are on a first-come first-served basis. Book early at to avoid disappointment. I very much hope you will be able to join us.
