FALL RIVER - The colorful historical 2004 calendar published by the Fall River diocese as one of its centennial celebration hallmarks, ha·s won a certificate of merit from the Catholic Communication Campaign.

The diocese was among 14 U.S. dioceses honored with its 2004 Proclaim Awards and certificates ·of merit at a luncheon late· last month in West Hollywood, .Calif.

The awards honoring excellence in diocesan communications were presented as part of the annuill assembly of th~ Catholic Academy for Communications Arts Professionals, formerly

known as Unda USA. The Catholic Communication Campaign, founded by the U.S. bishops in 1978 to develop programming, projects and resources to promote Gospel values through the media, has been giving out the Proclaim Awards since 1981.

John E. Keams Jr., assistant director of Communications for the Fall River diocese, and chairman of the committee that spent two years preparing and designing the calendar, is also treasurer and representative-at-large for the Catholic Academy for Communi·cations Arts Professionals.

Keams said that when he saw the entrance requirements in the CCC's category ofprint brochures and posters, at the recent assembly in California, he submitted the calendar.

"When in 2002 our committee decided on a 13-month calendar, we came up with 13 broad services and ministries the diocese is involved in, and dedicated a calendar month to them," Keams said. "What we had in mind was to show not just a history of the diocese via milestones, but to emphasize what goes on in the present, all under the theme, 'The Spirit Gives Life. '" More than 80,000 copies ofthe calendar were printed and handed out to parishioners of every parish.

Keams credited the calendar committee, that included Msgr.

Daniel F. Hoye, Fathers Craig A. Pregana, Edward J. Healey and Barry W. Wall; Mercy Sister Elaine Heffernan, Holy Trinity School Principal Kathleen Barboza, and Julie Cayer from Diocesan Health Facilities. He also praised the assistance given

by Litos Advertising and Design of East Providence, R.I. Certificates of merit also went

to the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas, for its regular televised "Cathedral Sunday Mass"; and the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio, for the "Bishop's Installation Issue" of the Catholic Chronicle.

First-time winners of certificates of merit included the Diocese of S1. Cloud, Minn., which won for its radio program, "Conversation - Project Rachel," and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, a winner in the category of radio public service announcements for its "Archbishop's Outreach Campaign."

Both the Diocese of Scranton, Pa., and the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn., won multiple awards and were repeat winners.

The Scranton diocese won a Proclaim Award in the category of special television Masses for its live broadcast of the installation of Bishop Joseph F. Martino as ninth bishop of Scranton. It also won a certificate of merit in the video presentation category for a video on the 25th anniversary of S1. Francis of Assisi Kitchen in Scranton.

The Archdiocese of Hartford won certificates of merit in the categories oftelevision talk shows and TV programs - regular series or special for "On This RockMVP," a Saturday half-hour talk show for teens, and "Crossroad Magazine," a weekly half-hour good news magazine program, respectively.

The Diocese of Trenton, N.J., won a Proclaim Award for its television talk show, "Realfaith TV: Dealing with the Loss of a Parent," a series which helps teens cope with issues through a Catholic faith perspective. Statement of the Fall River diocese on the case of Father Stephen Fernandes November 8, 2004 On Wednesday morning, Oct. 27,2004, Mrs. Arlene McNamee of Catholic Social Services received a call from a representative of an independent computer firm which had been hired to repair a dysfunctional computer used by Father Stephen A. Fernandes of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in New Bedford.

Mrs. McNamee was told that while servicing the computer, technicians had come across a quantity of pornographic photo.graphs that had been downloaded to the computer's memory.

Mrs. McNamee then contacted Bishop George W. Coleman to apprise him of the findings. He asked her to review the photographs as soon as she was able,

Election reflections What went wrong? This question is haunting the Democratic Party.

Given the reality that President George W. Bush is really not that popular, and is up to his neck"in an unpopular war, the liberals certainly thought that John F. Kerry would be the next president. But this just did not happen. The pro-abortion, pro-embryonic stem cell and pro-gay marriage coalition never gave much notice to the real values of family lif~ and living. These folks were caught up in the economy, the war and the past.

They dominated the Democratic drive for the White House. The centralists and conservatives of the party were given little heed. Encouraged by the liberal media, they refused to look around the country and listen to the voices of people who had concerns other than their own. In fact, they held people in contempt who dared to inject morality and ethical values into a campaign platform. Because of their blindness, they lost the election.

Some will reflect that Kerry's flip-flopping on various issues was the inherent cause of his defeat. It was more than this. His complete disregard of so many issues of life and living was a critical mistake. A recent politi. cal profile had some very interesting results. For example, more Hispan- . ics voted for Bush than in the 2000 election. The same can be said of Asians. Both cultures are basically family oriented. Family values are not a mere subjective speculative choice; they are real and abiding.

In the area of religion, Protestants and Catholics gave Bush a plurality.

The Jewish vote was the expected majority. Yet, even in this category, Bush outpaced his 2000 vote. One surprise the profile rendered was that people who attend church on a regular basis, the vast majority, 61 percent voted for Bush. There are those who would say that it was the socalled Evangelicals who were the decisive reality in this fact. Not so. The Catholic vote was influential in the election. Remember, in 2000 presidential candidate Al Gore won more Catholic votes than did Bush. Given the fact that Kerry is a Catholic, this clearly shows that Catholics were concerned about life and family issues.

The age of voters was a significant factor. Hoping to get young new voters to the polls just did not happen. All the Hollywood stars and rock bands did not get young people to the voting booth. The middle aged and older voters were out in numbers, and Bush was the winner.

So many commentators have tried to say that it was the rural vote that influenced the outcome. The fact is that Kerry. only gleaned 60 percent of the vote in big cities. In 2000, Gore got 71 percent of that particular vote.

Note well that the Republican Party also did very well in the House and Senate.One can easily read that they indeed swept the political spoils, even ina time of war and economic uncertainty. In a New York Times article entitled "Can a Stroke of History Save the Democratic Party?"

Bruce Cain, the director of the Institute of Government Studies at the University of California, reflected that cultural values or religious issues have fallen overwhelmingly into Republican hands. He commented ''The 'Democrats can win the presidency if the Republicans trip up, but they are decidedly on the wrong side of the dominant paradigm in American politics." He also said Bush has been able to achieve what no religious leader in the past has accomplished. He has united Protestants and Catholics.

The Democratic Party has to address all the issues that affect American life. They can no longer be the party of the left if they hope to win back the White House and Congress. They must become centralists in scope and policy. There is no doubt that in the world in which we live, much could change in the wink of an eye. However, for now, the American people have chosen not to follow the left. Thomas Aquinas feit that all virtue stands in the middle; it is not left or right. Middle America, not the Atlantic or the Pacific, made the call. Bush knew it and won.

Thankful for what?

There are many people who might argue that we have less to be thankful for this Thanksgiving than in the past. It is not ingratitude on their part. Rather, it is the fact that present times contain so many uncertainties, tensions and fears.

A few years ago we knew terrorists existed, but experiencing terrorism in our country hadn't hit home. Our freedom to move about was less hindered, and very little was heard about dirty bombs or chemical warfare. The Army was more interested in keeping the peace than fighting bloody battles, and it is no exaggeration to say that our minds and the environment were more at peace.

Before the last two presidential elections, we knew that Americans were divided, but not to the extent that we now know they are. Suddenly we realize how difficult it is to follow the motto that "in unity there is strength." . It was not until recently that we realized to what depths corruption can sink at the highest levels of the business

world and the suffering this can cause millions of innocent people. w.e were excited and proud about the new world of the Internet, only to learn that it has a dark side as well as a bright side. Computer viruses and identity theft are just two of the evils it has spawned.

Another motto dear to us has . also come under fire: ''The truth will make you free." It is becoming more and more difficult to tell who is speaking the truth. Noted news stations have retracted statements they originally swore were the absolute truth. Respected analysts report that the truth espoused by aspiring politicians isn't always that truthful. Crafty lawyers and advisers have raised twisted truth to a new and dangerous art form. Even some religious leaders, who symbolize the divine essence of truth, have been less than straightforward.

This is the tip of the iceberg of woes that makes us wonder what there is to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

In life there are always two sides of a coin. Wherever there is woe there is also happiness.

When we paraphrase the happiness of this Thanksgiving in terms of the Beatitudes, they teach us that: -Happy are they who see imperfections in life as new, enervating challenges to be responded to rather than as hopeless woes to succumb to.

-Happy are they who are developing a new prudence to meet the challenges of our postmodem age. .

-Happy are they who understand that war, untruthfulness, deceit and division are works of darkness that have existed from the beginning of time and who are formulating stronger virtues to counter them.

-Happy are they who are uneasy with unrest and seek new means of achieving peace.

-Happy are they who forever are turning to God and reinterpreting God's wisdom for our new age.

-Happy are all who keep the nation together with a steadfast spirit of faith, hope, love, prudence, understanding, fortitude and patience.

Ah, yes, as long as this spirit is alive, we have much for which to be thankful.

Within society, there is a growing interest in and a concern for the spiritual. It seems that the human spirit, even amidst our busy lives, recognizes the need to ponder things that speak to the heart and soul, to reflect on questions of substance such as what is the purpose, meaning, and end of life.

There is, as Pope John Paul II stated, a widespread demand for spirituality which "expresses itself in large part as a renewed need for prayer" and an increased knowledge of the Gospel.

At present, we stand at the beginning of the third millennium, and as Catholics we are challenged to start afresh in Christ.

Pope John Paul JI has issued this challenge to the universal Church.

Bishop George Coleman, at the beginning of our second centennial as a diocese, has charted the course that together we answer the universal call to holiness and to build a stronger Church.

Though it has always been a central component of the Church's catechetical mission, much ink of late has been spilled concerning adult faith formation.

The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops published the document entitled, "Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us," which lays out a pastoral plan for adult faith formation and catechesis.

The bishops write, "We are convinced that the energy and resources we devote to adult faith formation will strengthen and invigorate all the charisms that adults receive and the activities . they undertake, in the Church and

OWATONNA, Minn. - A Catholic shade of environmental green emerged at a three-day national Catholic scholars' conference on environmental justice.

Participants linked care for the earth with a preferential option for the poor and the need to work for the common good - all intertwining themes ofCatholic social teaching.

The invitation-only meeting was jointly sponsored by the U.S. Conference.ofCatholic Bishops and the University ofSt. Thomas in St. Paul.

Held last week at the university's Gainey Conference Center in Owatonna, it brought together about 60 experts from various fields theologians, scientists and other academic specialists, bishops, heads of national Catholic organizations that are engaged in environmental issues, diocesan social action leaders and media representatives versed in Catholic social thought.

The conference theme was "The Person, the Poor and the Common Good: A Catholic Dialogue on the Environment."

Father Bryan Massingale, a theology professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, said it is the poor who suffer most from degradation of the environment.

That argument, reflecting teachings by the Vatican and the U.S. bishops, was illustrated concretely by political science professor Steven M. Hoffman. HONOLULU - The paintings

by Hawaiian Catholic artist Peggy Chun show no indication of her struggles.

Chun, who for the past two years has been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, paints by holding a paintbrush with her teeth.

In the face of the illness that attacks the nervous system and causes muscle cells to lose function, she has held firmly to her faith, her sense of humor and love for her friends and family.

In a short span of time, Chun lost the use of her arms and legs and now must breathe with the help of a ventilator. Yet she still paints regularly, still gives an occasional painting lesson, attends art shows and goes out to dinner.

And despite her tracheotomy, her voice still resonates with a passion for life that defies her disease.

It's an attitude, she said, that is bolstered by "humor and total irreverence."

"You just can't take things seriously, especially yourself," she told the Hawaii CathoLic HeraLd. diocesan newspaper of Honolulu.

Chun, 58, learned she had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, in March 2002. The news was not a complete surprise - both her mother and her twin sister, Bobby, died from it within a year of it being diagnosed. Her mother was 50, and her sister was 40.

Chun's special weapon of defense is a well-organized group of about 100 friends, affectionately called "Peg's Legs," who take turns caring for her around the clock, seven days a week.

'This is what's saving my life.

It's all these people," Chun said.

"I have double insurance and it still doesn't cover everything, so they are saving us about $150,000 a year just by volunteering. It is amazing."

The group was first organized by her daughter-in-law, Kimi Chun, then was taken over by a friend, Susanne Maurer.

"What Peggy is experiencing is a reflection of all the love she has given out in her adult life," Maurer said. "She is an extrovert. She loves a party. She loves a good time. She loves laughter. This illness has not dampened that a degree."

Forty-one volunteers help out each week, working in pairs in four-hour shifts. Nurses provide care at night.

Chun, who was raised in Oklahoma in a family of eight, also gets visits from her five brothers and one sister, and her 87-year-old father comes to see her.

Chun's home is decorated with images of St. Padre Pio of Pietralcina, Blessed Mother Teresa and an icon of St. Michael the Archangel. She said she prays every day and has "tried to make a lot of deals" but noted that her best prayers have been when she is thankful.

Maurer is amazed at Chun's faith and sees it as an example for others. She said her friend "lives to encourage other people that no matter how dark it seems there is hope."

Chun's twin sister, Bobby, painted from the 1970s until 1986, when she learned she had the disease. She died in June 1987. Six months later, Chun picked up her paintbrush.

take a painting class," she said. She soon began selling her work and getting commissions.

"It is just amazing to see the patterns as they fall," she said. "I went through a very rough divorce and was left in so much debt that I had to paint," she added.

When Chun lost the use of her right hand last year, she immediately began painting with her left.

When her left hand failed, she painted with her teeth.

"If you look at your life, you see how it is made up of miracles constantly," she added. "You just have to look at it that way."

Catechists - turning the

,It seems to me that one of the clearest , _and most indisputable teachings of Jesus is this: We should love people and use things. Somehow we have managed to reverse that teaching in our culture to read: Love things and use people!

Think for a moment about the so-called "reality shows" on television that are steadily gaining popularity. These programs reflect a wide and deep message embraced by our society; persons are commodities; intimacy is something that can be bought; love can be earned by manipulation or coercion; and that for money nothing can be too demeaning to the human spirit.

stantly reminding their society not to use people for their own selfish ends, in fact, not to use people at all. The prophet Amos reminds them "not to trample' on the needy," and "to fix your scales of measurement," which keep people in niisery and sees them only as objects to obtain wealth.

In Luke's Gospel about the crafty steward who has been dismissed for his master's service for "squandering his property," we read how he goes to his master's debtors about reducing their obligations and notes thereby gaining favor and security for himself. The master strongly commends him for "acting pmdently."

In this particular story we should not confuse the means with the end. Jesus is not condoning the end or the goal that the servant has in mind but rather the resource-

fulness and means that the steward employs. The story is to point out that if we were as clever in promoting the Kingdom of God, as we are our own agendas, the Kingdom would be flourishing in this world.

The Kingdom of God always turns the world as we know it upside down! The poor are rich and the rich are poor. Those who love money and things invest in a short future. Those who invest their time and resources in people are living right now what matters forever ---, something I believe may be one of the best definitions of the Kingdom of God. This week as our diocese celebrates Religious Education month with the rest of New England, we recognize our directors, coordinators, and volunteer catechists who

continue the central mission of our Church, to teach, to preach and to heal. They continue to tell stories, which to this day, perhaps especially today, tum the ways of our culture upside down. They teach that we are to love people and use things properly, not to use people to obtain things.

And they, like the crafty steward, often use limited resources to promote the Kingdom of God and hold in their teaching and by the examples of their lives, the great tmth of our faith, that we are loved unconditionally by God for who we are, not for what we can obtain, eam or possess.

I am in deep gratitude for their work, perseverance, resourcefulness and commitment to the young people, who live in a culture, which in many ways has lost its way.

FALL RIVER - Hundreds of catechists, teachers, youth ministers, and deacons gathered November 6 for the annual Religious Education Convention at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River.

The day began with Mass at which Bishop George W. Coleman was the principal celebrant and homilist. In his homily, he emphasized the centrality of the Eucharist in our Catholic faith. He also shared Pope John Paul II's invitation to celebrate the great gift and mystery of the Eucharist in a special way during this, the Year of the Eucharist.

At the conclusion of Mass, Bishop Coleman presented Dr. Doris Thibault, director of Religious Education at St. John Neumann Parish in East Freetown, with flowers and a small gift to mark her 80th birthday as well as 61 years as a religious educator.

St. Joseph of Rochester Sister Carol Cimino gave an energetic and emotional keynote address, which affirmed the catechists and teachers in their vocation as religious educators, pointing to their generous hearts and exemplary lives as being both inspired and inspiring to the young people to whom they minister.

Quoting from the document, "How Jesus Taught," Sister Cimino reminded the educators of the importance of always keeping the children first, of maintaining a sense of humor, and of walking the journey of faith with our youth even when it is "down and dirty."

Three sessions of workshops,

ranging from spirituality, teaching methods and faith formation, rounded out the rest of the day.

Celebrate Religious Education

Catechists at North Dighton parish receive tributes f.rom students NORTH DIGHTON - The 54 volunteer catechists who serve and enrich the Religious Education Program at St. Joseph's Parish know they are loved and appreciated.

At a recent special tribute, students in the program wrote either an essay, prayer, or a poem thanking their teachers, as a homework project, Sister of St. Dorothy Judith Costa, Religious Education coordinator at the parish, reported during a recent visit to The Anchor.

Among the teachers cited were Suzanne Ross, Tammy Gluchacki, .Kim Lima, Michael and Eileen Kelleher, Sherrie Kiander, Joellen Mullen, Garry Moniz, Dawn Torres, and Nancy Ritchie.

Here is a sampling of those essays: "Mrs. Lima is important in a lot of ways.

She is nice and knows a lot about the Bible and God. She is also patient. She is teaching us a new prayer called the Hail Holy Queen. My parents also went to CCD but they also learned from their family. If Mrs. Lima couldn't teach it would be so much harder to learn about our religion. That's why Mrs. Lima is important to me." "Mrs. Ross is very nice! I appreciate that Mrs. Ross gives up her time to go to church every week, to teach us about God. Mrs. Ross helps me understand things better. She

The bishop was unable to locate Father Fernandes until Friday morning at which time he was requested to return to the diocese immediately.

Upon his return on Friday afternoon, Bishop Coleman placed Father Fernandes on administrative leave during which time he will not function as a priest in any capacity.

At the request of the bishop, Msgr. John A. Perry attended Masses at Our Lady of. Fatima Parish on the weekend of October 30/31 to inform parishioners that a credible allegation of illegal activity had been made against their pastor, that the matter had been turned over to the DA's office as well as Massachusetts DSS, and that their pastor had been put on administrative leave.

On Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, the authorities arrested Father Fernandes and today, Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, he has been arraigned.

This is obviously a profoundly disturbing matter for Bishop Cole-' man and the entire Diocese of Fall River. Bishop Coleman is deeply concerned for the members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Along with offering them his heartfelt prayers during this difficult time, Bishop Coleman made available professional counselors at Masses this past weekend to help parishioners and will have counselors present again should the need arise. Young adult Catholics learn how not to marry a 'jerk' or 'jerkette' UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (CNS) - Young adults in their 20s and 30s are often searching for their life mates, and Catholics are no different.

That's why John Van Epp's workshop on "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk(ette)" was a popular paJt of the recent National Young Adult Conference, sponsored by the Cleveland diocesaJl Youth & Young Adult Ministry and CYO offices, the Catholic dioceses of Ohio, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Catholic Young Adult Ministry Association.

Thirteen men and 44 women got a crash course in Van Epp's five-part relationship attachment model, which he teaches to members of the U.S. armed services and other groups. He has a video, DVD and Website (www.nojerks.com) and even offers certification in the model.

"Choosing a marriage partner requires your heart to work in harmony with your head," Van Epp said. "The program is more than marrying a certain type of person, but rather getting to know what a person is like."

What is it like to die?

Bv M. REGINA CRAM CATHOUC NEWS SERVICE Five-year old Meggie had been battling leukemia for more than half her young life. The disease went into remission for a while but returned stronger than ever, and no treatment could slow its growth.

By the time Meggie entered kindergarten, it was clear to everyone that she was going to lose the battle. Her parents tried to prepare themselves for Meggie's death, but how can one prepare for the unthinkable?

Meggie was such a spitfIre. She had remained cheerful even when radiation sapped her strength and chemotherapy snatched away her dark brown curls. She was a favorite at the Children's ltospital, staging wheelchair races with the niJrses

and singing to fussy babies until they grinned at her with their bald heads and toothless smiles.

From the earliest days Meggie had bubbled over with curiosity and enthusiasm, sometimes exasperating her parents by asking questions from morning until long after dark. Where do fIreflies sleep? Why do we have toes?

When Mary and Joseph went on a date, who baby-sat for baby Jesus? Do giants have belly buttons? Who takes care of Big Bird when he gets sick? Can I have a cookie?

As Meggie grew sicker, her questions focused increasingly on death, and yet she did not speak in the frightened hush tones typically used by adults. Instead, she was as matter-of-fact about death as she was about frogs and ice cream cones. What would happen to her

body after she died? Would Santa Claus know how to find her?

Would her parents replace her with another little girl? Could she bring her teddy bear with her to

Coming of Age heaven? Does Jesus have a teddy bear?

Meggie's mother was able to answer most of the child's questions, but she dreaded the day when Meggie would ask about the actual process of dying. How could she explain something that she didn't understand herself?

Sure enough, the day finally arrived.

"Mama, what is it like to die?"

Meggie asked with innocent curiosity. "Does it hurt? Will I be scared? Will you be with me?"

Meggie's innocence pierced her mother's heart, yet at that precise moment she knew exactly what to say.

"You know how sometimes you get scared in the middle of the night?" her mother began.

"When that happens, you run across the hall to our room and climb into bed with Daddy and me, right?"

Meggie nodded her head, her dark eyes capturing every word.

"When you wake up the next morning, where are you Sweetheart?" her mother continued.

Meggie never had thought of. that before. "I'm back in my own

bed," she replied in surprise.

"That's right," her mother explained. "While you're asleep, your daddy picks you up in his big, strong arms and carries you back to your bed where you belong.

'That's what it's like to die.

We're here on earth for only a little while, Sweetheart. Then, when the time is right, our heavenly Father picks us up in his big, strong arms and gently carries us home to heaven, which is where we really belong anyway."

"Oh," said Meggie with a contented sigh. 'That's not scary at all."

A few weeks later Meggie quietly slipped into a coma. The following night, her heavenly Father picked her up in his big, strorig arms and gently carried her home to where she belonged.

Patriots' Brady donates Cadillac for raffle at Catholic alma mater SAN MATEO, Calif. (CNS)Tom Brody, quarterback ofthe New England Patriots and two-time Super Bowl most valuable player, has donated his 2004 Super Bowl MVP Cadillac to his alma mater, J unipero Serra High School in San Mateo, for the school's annual benefit auction November 13.

Brody, who graduated from the school in 1995, is also offering an autographed jersey to any student who sells $2,500 worth of raffle tickets, a signed helmet for selling $1,500 worth and a signed football for selling $500 worth.

Raffle tickets were selling for $25 each and by late October Serra students had sold $72,000 worth of tickets.

Mike Peterson, Serra's principal when Brady was a student and currently the school's director of institutional development, said the gift has been the talk of the country and has been mentioned in Sports Illustrated and major daily newspapers.

"So far people have bought tickets from as far away as Maine, Florida, Georgia and New Hamp-

shire," Peterson told Catholic San Francisco, newspaper of the San Francisco Archdiocese.

"We're hoping to raise at least $150,000 from that item alone," he added.

The Cadillac XLR is valued at $76,000 and only about 3,000 of them have been produced.

Brady told Patrick Walsh, the school's varsity football coach, that he has a great deal of affection for and loyalty to his former high school, and thought that this was a good opportunity to give something back.

Brady played football for four years at Serra and still holds the record for most completions. .

But he is not the only gmduate to find success in the sports world.
