The Mass of Christian Burial was offered Oct. 30 at St. Anne's Church, Fall River, for Brother Joseph A. Barolet, OP, who died Oct. 27, his 79th birthday, at the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home in Fall River.

He was a native of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, and the son of the late Michel and the late Louise (Landry) Barolet. Hejoined the Dominican Order as a lay brother at age 22 in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. Thereafter he served in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Lewiston, ME, and Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, until assignment to the monastery of St. Anne, Eall River, where he served for 37 years as a maintenance man, woodworker, tailor, bookbinder, barber, chauffeur, cook and receptionist. Most recently he was sacristan at St. Anne's Church.

Brother Barolet is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Hebert of Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada, and Rita Johnson of St. John, also New Brunswick.

Interment was in the cemetery of the Canadian Dominicans in St. Hyacinthe.

Moving Homily Father Pierre E. Lachance, OP, superior of the Dominican community at St. Anne's parish, Fall River, and a parochial vicar in the parish, offered a moving homily at Brother Barolet's funeral, saying "His whole life was lived in the humble service of others, like the great St. Joseph, his patron."

At an early age, said Father Lachance, the brother had thought of religious life, but felt he should work to help support his family.

Eventually, however, his pastor put him in touch with Dominican priests in Sackville, New Brunswick, and he decided to become a lay brother, receiving hi.s habit Feb. 15, 1941. Before he entered the Dominican novitiate, he was asked why he wished to become a religious, to which he replied "I always thought of becoming a religious so as to offer everything for sinners."

"He could do practically anything," said the homilist, adding that his virtue "expressed itself by a readiness to help whenever asked.

Brother Barolet, noted Father Lachance, liked best in religious life "the divine office recited in choir and the Mass."

Brother Lussier Blessed Sacrament Brother Raymond J. Lussier, 82, died Oct. 24 in Richfield, OH, at Regina Health Center for priests, brothers and sisters. A Fall River native, he was a member of his congregation for over 59 years.

He served at Notre Dame de Chicago, I L, for 43 years, where he was receptionist, secretary, treasurer and a member of the parish choir. In the course of his years there he was elected to his community's chapter.

In 1981 he was among founding members of a new Blessed Sacrament community at Sacred Heart Church, Salt Lake City, UT. He served there four years as community treasurer, then was transferred to St. Joseph's Church, San Antonio, TX. .

Suffering a stroke in 1988, he resided at two San Antonio nurs-

Brother Lussier is survived by two sisters, Bertha Phenix and Eva Latulippe, both of Fall River, and a brother, Normand Lussier, of Tiverton, R I. He was predeceased by five brothers, Rev. J. Omer Lussier, who died March 2, 1970, and was a pastor of Sacred Heart parish, North Attleboro; Rev. J. Ernest Lussier, SSS, a Blessed Sacrament priest; and Louis, Gerard and Ralph Lussier.

His Mass of Christian Burial was offered Oct. 28 in Richfield by a cousin, Rev. Robert Lussier, SSS, of Menasha, WI, as principal celebrant, with other mem bers of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation as concelebrants.

Sr. Heliodore Ethier Sister Heliodore Ethier, RJM, 89, of Jesus Mary Cenacle, North Providence, died Oct. 25. A native of Woonsocket, RI, the da.ughter of the late Pierre and the late Ida Ethier, she entered religious life Jan. 14, 1926, at her community'S convent in Sillery, Province of Quebec, Canada, and was pr,:>fessed in Sillery in 1928.

Subsequently she taught in schools in Woonsocket, Canada, and New Hampshire and for 50 years at Notre Dame School, Fall River. She was remembered by her students as a very gentle and understanding person. Sister Et hier is survived by a sister, Louisa Plante of Connecticut, and by niec:es and nephews. Her Mass of Christian Burial was offered Oct. 28 in Providence.

Mass. Knights release figur4~s The Massachusetts Knights of Columbus gave $2,566,791 dol.lars and 768,531 hours in personal service to charitable and benevolent activities in 1995 according to the order's annual survey of fraternal activity.

The figures were released by Knights of Columbus state deputy Peter J. Giordano. "These totals represent a remarkable outpouring of generosity - not only .in money but in personal ce'mmltment - on the part of Knights in Massachusetts," Giordano :;aid.

The theme of this year's Migration Mass was "Many Gifts - One People of God." Following the liturgy, everyone was invited to share a sampling of pastries from throughout the world.

The liturgy ofthe word was read in Spanish and Portuguese, and the general intercessions were read in French, Portuguese., Polish, Cape Verdean, Italian, English, Lebanese, Brazilian and Spanish.

Father John J. Oliveira, diocesan coordinator of National Migration Week and pastor of St. John the Baptist parish, :~ew Bedford, and his Migration Mass committee had asked that all who attend bring a non-perishable food item to the Mass to later be donated to the Catholic Social Services offices for distribution to those in need. The baskets of food were brought up to the altar during the presentation of the gifts.

In his homily, Bishop O'Malley described the church in America. as a "Church of immigrants." He told the congregation that we are all called to be color blind and to welcome strangers. "We must realize that we are part of something larger," said the bishop.

Bishop O'Malley also said that there is a large anti-immigrant fever in the United States right now. He called on his listeners to

"reflect a unity of people and an obligation to reach out to newcomers." "God's commandment of love knows no loophole~. The.1 ove that binds us together should be a sign to others to build a culture of love," he continued.

Behind the altar hung a quilt made by Denita Tremblay, principal at St. Stanislaus School, Fall River and a member ofthe Migration Day planning committee. The quilt symbolized the theme, "Many Gifts - One People of God."

Get Out and Vote!

The election next week is very important. Polls, hoopla and media aside, this election will determine our nation's ethical and moral vision as the millennium nears. So many seeking office have failed to face the basic problems that will shape our existence as a nation.

Because consumerism has replaced conscience, we are falling into a materialistic quicksand and taxes, inflation and financial stability have become the burning issues of the election debates. When everyone has a buck in his or her' pocket, food on the table and reasonable leisure time, only then is ·democracy seen as a workable form of government.

The dream seems to be to make the nation into one big Disneyland, but this is no more than political fantasy.

In our headlong desire to gratify our material desires, we have ignored the very real issues that candidates should be placing on the table. These are the issues that will over time determine the real validity of our democracy as envisioned by our founding fathers. Our refusal thus far to make the coming election an ethical and moral referendum is making a mockery of the ideals on which this country was founded.

We are being tyranni.zed by amorality. Without a sense of moral responsibility and ethical accountability, this nation is beginning to flounder and asa people we are losing our sense of purpose and are stepping into a directionless vacuum. We can learn much by looking at Holland's experience, where public acceptance of assisted suicide has led to the legalization of medical killing without the patient's consent. Close to 10% of all deaths in the Netherlands are due to euthanasia... half of them without patient consent. In our country, it is safe to predict that managed care medicine, and the high cost of nursing home care would cause an even higher rate of euthanasia than in a country like Holland.

We are definitely at a crossroad.

I have not said for whom I shall vote, but I will tell you for whom I will not vote. I will not vote for any politician who will promote abortion or the culture of d':ath, no matter how appealing the rest of his or her program might be. Stewardship Conference

By Owen and Pat McGowan Some 133 enthusiastic representatives of the 33 diocesan parishes currently committed to the stewardship way of life met last Saturday at Bishop Stang High School, North Dartmouth, for a daylong conference. The second annual such meeting, its theme was "Continuing the Journey: Time, Talent and Treasure." .

REV. MARCEL BOUCHARD In a letter to participants included in the conference program Father Marcel H. Bouchard, Diocesan Director of Stewardship, noted that the theme "reflects our ongoing efforts to respond to the call to discipleship through stewardship as a way of life."

Following the director's words of welcome to attendees, lay witness couple Arthur and Julie La Chance offered an opening prayer and Bishop Sean O~Malley was principal celebrant for the conference Mass. In his homily he recalled the Gospel story of the rich man who asked Jesus what he had to do to merit eternal life. Jesus listed the commandments as guides to conduct, but the man replied, "Teacher, I have kept all these since childhood."

Looking at him lovingly, Jesus said,'''There is one thing more you must do. Go and sell what you have and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven."

At that, the man's face fell and he went away sad, unable to bear the thought of parting with his possessions.

Jesus then said to his disciples, "It is. easier for a camel to pass through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," going on to promise that those who abandon all to follow him are assured of everlasting life.

The invitation of Christ is to everyone, said Bishop O'Malley.

"Give as you have been given, and

do it joyfully," he advised. "It's sad to hold on to money."

He then told the story of Anita, the mother of several child.ren whose husband had deserted her.

She was at Mass in the Hispanic parish where hOe was then serving and had only $5 to her name. She struggled with herself over whether she should put it in the collection, but decided she would. On her way home with the children, one of them found a $100 bill, which she took to the rectory in case it had been reported lost.

"I told her to keep it," related the bishop, "and promised that if anyone came looking for it, we would give that person $100 ourselves. No one ever came," The story of Anita, he said, recalls the story of the widow related in the Gospels of Mark and Luke. She could afford to contribute only two copper coins to the temple treasury, but of her Jesus said, "She gave more than all the others....They gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live on."

A Way of Life Stewardship, the bishop emphasized, is a way of life, not a onetime program, and is an integral part of Scripture, tradition and church teaching; indeed, half the parables told by Jesus deal with steward. ship.

Keynote Address The conference's keynote address was delivered by James K. Kelley, director of development for the diocese of Charlotte, NC. He stressed that stewardship is a way of life, not merely a moneyraising tool, and that it involves expressing gratitude to God for what one has received by dedicating to Him a portion of one's time, talent and treasure.

"It is important," he said, "that all members [of a stewardship committee] be people of prayer and be concerned about parishio.ners' relationship with'God, not about the [financial] needs of the church."

Equal emphasi~ should be put, he explained, on time, talent and treasure, and he recommended that a parish interested in the program should make formation of a stewardship committee its first step.

Members should be spiritually motivated, exemplify the goals of stewardship and be able to envision what it can accomplish for the parish.

Committee activities could include explanation of stewardship to the parish as a whole by way of programs, talks by persons already practicing the "three Ts," and

preparation of a list of parish activities and organizations and the opportunities they offer volunteers.

Stewardship should also be kept before the eyes of parishioners by way of weekly notes in the church bulletin, material in booklet racks and mention in homilies and in the Prayer of the Faithful from time to time. New parishioners should also be informed of the stewardship program.

Mar3,knolllay missioner will aid in administration of Association of Faithful

By Pat McGowan Anchor Staff In December, Sheila Matthews of St. Patrick's parish, Somerset, will chalk up her 16th adventurous year as a Maryknoll lay missi\;>ner.

In that time she has served hundreds of impoverished Indians in and around the small jungle community of Poptun in the Guatemalan state of EI Peten.

A registered nurse and a 1968 graduate of Stonehill College, North Easton, she worked in Massachusetts hospitals and as a public health nurse and VIIST A volunteerin Vermont beforejoining Maryknoll's lay missionary program in 1980.

Sheila prepared for missionary service at a four-month training program at Maryknoll headquarters in Maryknoll, NY, followed by a course in Spanish in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She then traveled to Guatemala to join a catechetical, health and literacy team in EI Peten.

There since 1981, she has trained scores of Indian mf:n as health promoters in some 109 small settlemeQts in the Poptun area and has established a small pharmacy which often helps out the local hospital with medications as well as supplying the needs of its own patients.

In 1986 Sheila also opened an eye clinic in response to the tremendous prevalence of blindness in the area, and she has taken hundreds of children :in need of eye surgery to Guatemala City, 250 miles away. The trip can take from 10 hours to two days, depending on road conditions.

New Direction This year Sheila completed her fifth three-year term of service as a Maryknoll lay missioner-and embarked upon a new form of ministry as one of three members of the coordinating I:ommittee of the Maryknoll Mission Association of the Faithful, based at Maryknoll, NY. The association, founded in 1994, is a community of priests, sisters and married or single laypersons

who will serve either in the United States or at missions in other lands.

Members may remain under the jurisdiction of their own diocese or may join Maryknoll. As a coordinating committee member, Sheila will be in charge of personnel at home and overseas. She explained that association members have a four-month orientation period, followed by five months of language training and adaptation to the culture where they will serve.

They commit to at least three and a half years overseas, followed by three years back in the United States, mostly to be devoted to activities in support of members

abroad and to sharing their mission experience with American Catholics. At present the group numbers 128 lay members, some 650 priests and about 750 sisters..

Married members with children are seen as a plus: "Their kids can reach out to kids in mission lands," , explained Sheila.

She has been in the United States since last May and will probably . be at Maryknoll for the next four years. At the moment she is in Rome seeking official recognition of the new group as a canonically approved Association of the Christian Faithful.

PHILADELPHIA (CNS) When Sumeyya Ashrafs parents were deciding where to send their l4-year-old Muslim daughter to school, it was the school uniform - and not the Catholic curriculum - that caused concern.

Shorter skirts, jumpers and headbands are a far cry from the / ankle-length skirts, long sleeves and head scarves that are common dress for Muslim women.

Archbishop Prendergast High School for Girls in the Philadelphia suburb of Drexel Hill allayed the Ashrafs' apprehensions by allowing a uniform modification.

"We're all God's people -everyone is welcome here," said Sister ofSt. Joseph Catherine Robinson, president of Archbishop Prendergast, in an interview with The Catholic Standard and Times, Philadelphia's archdiocesan newspaper.

Mussarat Ashraf sewed her 'daughter's uniform when a specialordered garment did not arrive as scheduled. The longjumper sports the same colors and general cut of Sumeyya's peers' uniforms. An elegant head scarf - also in the school colors - was made in a shop in Saudi Arabia and delivered by a relative.

The Ashraf family moved to the United States from Pakistan four years ago.

Muslim women almost completely cover themselves'for safety reasons, said Mussarat. "They do not show their beauty to ... men so no one can dare to hurt them or tease them," she said.

At home, with close male relatives, a more relaxed dress is allowed. Sumeyya may remove her scarf only in classes taught by women.

"The girls can learn so much more by being exposed to a variety of cultures and people,". Sister Robinson said. "They learn to be a lot more accepting and understanding" and "can work better in the world ifthey recognize" different cultures.

jump at it," added Carol Ann Blair, principal.

When Blair first met with the Ashrafs, she was concerned about Sumeyya standing out from the student body in her modified uniform. The parents assured the principal that their daughter was accustomed to and accepted dressing differently from her peers.

Prendergast's advanced academic curriculum, female-only populace and value-oriented atmosphere convinced her parents to enroll Sumeyya. "Then and there we decided this is it," said Mussarat Ashraf.

Sumeyya, a freshman honors student, is enrolled in an honors

chemistry class with sophomores and Algebra II with juniors.. "She's happy arid she'5 doing finc:," said her mother.

Like her classmates, SlImeyya takes theology classes and attends Catholic religious ceremonies. .

"I learn about their beliefs and they learn about mine," she said.

"I ask them questions when I need help.... They respect my rdigion and I respect theirs."

Muslims, she said, "believe God is Almighty and Jesus is a prophet from God." Muslims "must believe in all the prophets; if you don't, you're not really a Muslim. I have to believe in Jesus."

Deaf - bllind parish council member hopes to incre:lse awareness of deaf community SEATTLE (CNS) - Robert Steppler hopes his membership on the pastoral council at 51. Patrick's in Seattle will highlight the need for more interpreters to help bring the deaf community more fully into parish life.

Deaf, blind, and unable to speak, 41-year-old Steppler recently joined the 12-member pastoral council and olans to take an active role.

"We need to build a link (between the deaf and hearing communities) and understand one another so that we can worship God together," he said through his interpreter's fingers.

To communicate, Steppler uses a system called tactual signing, where he listens by feeling the movement of the interpreter's fingers.

At his first pastoral council meeting, Steppler sat with his left hand atop the interpreter's fastmoving fingers and followed the proceedings over the m:xt two hours as the council discussed priorities and how to make St. Patrick's a more welcoming community.

The need for interpreters is "so, so, so important," Steppler said.

"The deaf can't know about God and they can't understand about God without communications. If there were more communications, more deaf people would join the chu~h~ . d M onA cradle Cathohc an a tana native, SteppIeI' was b~rn with Usher syndrome, the leadmg cause of all deaf-blindness.

Those who have it are born hearing impaired or deaf and often begin to experience a gradual loss of vision as young adults. Steppler was in his 30s when his eyesight deteriorated. He now walks with a cane and is able to detect only shapes of light. .

He lives independently, however, sharing a Seattle apartment with a roommate and communicating with the outside world through a telebraille machine. He travels by city bus to ohurch and to his job at the Lighthouse for the Blind Inc., which manufactures products for Boeing and other companies.

Although he lives in another . part of town, Steppler was attracted to St. Patrick's about five years ago by its commitment to the inclusion of the deaf community.

The parish provides American Sign Language interpreters at its 10 a.m. Sunday Masses and at seasonalliturgies. Deaf and blind parishioners also are active as eucharistic ministers and lectors. Victoria Ries, St. Patrick's pastoral life director,leads a Catholic faith series of the deaf community, with the help of interpreters.

"We've been trying to include the deaf community in all aspects of parish life;" she said.

Steppler has been member of the parish liturgy committee for more than a year, and continues to serve on that group..

Last June, he committed to joining the pastoral council.

From his service on the liturgy committee, Ries knows Steppler to be an articulate p<;rson and a good story teller.

"He catches everything," she said.

"He has good suggestions ... and he's very spiritual. I think those are the gifts he would bring to the council."

The' council has had to make some adjustments to accommodate its new member, however.

Because the work required by tactual signing is so intensive, two interpreters are used to sign for Steppl'er during the meeting. One is paid; the other is a volunteer, parishioner John Dunn.

During the first meeting, the interpreters occasionally had to ask the other council members to go slower. And Steppler's fellow council memblers also had to learn to identify themselves so that he would know who was talking.

Nuns croon for religious WASHINGTON (CNS) - Sisters in Song, a national choir of 60 sisters, will be feat~red on a public service announcement promoting the 1996 Retirement Fund for Religious collection, to be conducted in most U.S. parishes the weekend of Dec. 7-8.

The ad will debut on Odyssey, the interfaith cable channel formerly known as the Faith & Values Channel. It will be· available to other TV or cable stations.

The spot will be seen on Odyssey.Nov. II-Dec. 6 after the Monday-Friday cablecasts of"The Daily Mass" at 9 a.m. EST. The ad features Sisters in Song singing the hymn "Center of My Life." Its chorus says: "Lord, you are the center of my life. I will always praise you, I will always serve you, I will always keep you in my sight."

Sister Janet Roesener, a Sister of St. Joseph of Medaille who . heads the National Religious Retirement Office, said the song was chosen because the chorus is representative of the more than 45,000 men and women religious who are more than 70 years old and still serving the church.

The theme for the 1996 collection is "They Shaped Lives and They Still Do." The collection has been the most successful in U.S. hi!ltory. Still, the

unfunded retirement liability the amount religious orders figure they are lacking to meet. their members' retirement needs - has risen to $7.9 billion.

The collection is a joint project ofthe National Conference ofCatholic Bishops, the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, the L.eadership Conference of Women Religious and the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious.

Together, they sponsor the National Religious Retirement Office.

Move praised GUATEMALA CITY (CNS)Archbishop Prospero Penados del Barrio praised the military's recent move to disarm rural militias, or civil patrols, which have been blamed for the majority of human rights abuses in the Gu~temalan countryside. World must renew respect in treatment of elderly UNITED NATIONS (CNS)The Vatican nuncio to the United Nations called on the world community to' show renewed respect for life in dealing with the elderly.

"It is horrible to think that just as the world begins to make great advances in prolonging the lives of" individuals, a reverence and respect for life has been lost," said Archbishop Renato R. Martino.

The nuncio made his remarks Oct. 14 in a statement delivered at U.N. headquarters in New York to the General Assembly committee that deals with social, humanitaria~ and' cultural matters.

He noted that recent decades had brought significant advances in nutrition and eradication of disease, with the result that mortality rates had fallen. But he said recent years had been marked by "an incredible contradication."

"This contradiction draws attention away from the care of the sick, the aged and the disabled, and focuses instead upon euthanasia," he said. ' Archbishop Martino said the shift in attitude had become "a new source of deep anxiety and fear" for many elderly people.

"In a world in which longevity is rapidly becoming one of its challenging characteristics," he continued, "we should be working to develop a new and enriched understanding of aging, and of the wide contribution which the elderly can and should bring to our communities and societies."

The nuncio's statement also reiterated Vatican concern for governmental support of the family.

"Ever faithful to its mission, the Holy See will continue in its efforts at strengthening and safeguarding the sacredness of marriage'and the role of parents as the first educators of their children, especially during childhood and adolescence," Archbishop Martino said. . Commenting on problems facing young people, the nuncio said that for many of them "the future is not marked by hope."

He noted such problems as unemployment, lack of educational opportunities for girls, a climate of sexual permissiveness, drugs and crime.

The primary need of young people is to find "a renewed moral vision and a climate of hope," said Archbishop Martino.

CHICAGO(CNS) - Atage99, Dora Krueger has made history without even trying. ' A resident ofSt. Benedict's Home for the Aged in Niles, Krueger is believed to be the oldest associate member of a religious order since she became an associate of the Sisters of Sts.. Cyril and Methodius earlier this year.

"Actually, Dora was an associate long before the teJm was coined," Sister John Vianny Vranak told The New World, Chicago's archdiocesan newspaper.

For more than 30 years, Krueger volunteered at the now-closed Villa St. Cyril retirement home run by the religious order in Highland Park. She worked first as ;l receptionist and then later, after her hearing began to fail, as a "::riendly visitor" to the residents.

"I do whatever I can do," she said modestly.

A spry, cheerful woman who looks several decades younger than her age, Krueger lived alo:le until she was 97 and drove her own car until she was 95.

When the Sisters of St:;. Cyril and Methodius decided to close Villa St. Cyril and transferred the residents to St. Benedict's, Krueger decided to move out of the only home she had ever had and go with them.

"They had to move, so I had to move," she explains.

Even as a resident of St. Benedict's, Krueger continues ·to help out in the kitchen. She squeezes that in between daily MaSH, exercise class, reading the daily newspaper, bingo and card playing, praying the rosary and a daily walk.

Monsignor Peters PEORIA, Ill. (CNS) - Monsignor Robert G. Peters was remembered by a top Vatican official at his funeral Mass Sept.'IO as "one of the outstanding figures in the Catholic press this century." Msgr.

Peters, a former president of the Catholic Press Association who guided the newspaper of the Diocese of Peoria for nearly five decades as editor and later publisher, died in Peoria Sept. 7 at the

age of 79. The funeral Mass was Sept. 10 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria, with BishopJohnJ. Myers of Peoria as principal celebrant.

Bishop Myers read a letter of tribute to Msgr. Peters received that morning from Archbishop John P. Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications at the Vatican.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CNS)Managed care is a "morally flawed system" that interferes with the integrity of the relationship between physician and patient, according to a Franciscan brother who is also a physidan.

Held at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, the conference drew 125 physicians, nurses and health care administrators.

Brother Sulmasy, director of the center of c1inic:al bioethics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, said that "the collapse of the Clinton health care plan" has left the country without a plan.

In its absence, he said, is "unmanaged care ... unregulated competition among entrepreneurial managed care organizations."

Managed care is usually defined as a system whereby the primary physician of an individual is in charge of maintaining and managing his or her health care and acts as the gatekeeper for that patient's access to treatment by specialists.

Brother Sulmasy faulted managed care as a system which disguises the real de:cision makers, cuts off public debate on larger social issues, and gives less care in

New 'zine aimed at young Catholics PALATINE, Ill. (CNS) - A new magazine aimed at Catholic young people is being offered free to Catholic high school students , and youth groups in the Archdiocese of Chicago and at a minimal cost to those outside the archdiocese.

Titled Flashpoint, the magazine will be published quarterly by TNT Publishing Company in Palatine, Ill. Tom Toussaint, a former staffer at The New World, Chicago's archdiocesan newspaper, is publisher and editor.

"We chose the name Flashpoint," wrote Toussaint in his first editorial, "because Webster's defines it as 'a critical moment at which someone or something bursts forth into activity or existence,''' "We want to spark life, energy and excitement into your life as a Catholic Christian," he said to the magazine's youthful audience.

Some 30,000 archdiocesan high school students already have received the 24-page Fall 1996 issue free of charge, according to Toussaint. Paid advertising by companies and institutions interested in tapping into the youth market was expected to offset the give-away policy.

In the first issue, Chicago Bears head coach Dave Wannstedt discusses his Catholic faith and how it sustains him, in and out of football. In a separate article, Jami Wannstedt, 15, tells wh~t it's like

to be the daughter of a famous coach.

Also featured in the magazine are question-answer columns and two music stories, one on the Christian band Audio Adrenaline, the other on Cornerstone '96, a Midwestern Christian music festival. Students also contributed a short story and a column.

Future issues were to include stories on celebrating New Year's sensibly, choosing a college, graduation and summer plans.

The publishers also are producing a teacher's guide, called Flashlight, containing questions and discussion themes for use by teachers and youth program leaders. A copy of Flashlight will accompany all bulk orders.

St. Alnthony's celebrates centel1lnial On September 29, St. Anthony of Padua School, New Bedford, officially began its centennial year.

The day's festivities began with an alumni Mass celebrated by pastor Rev. Edmond Levesque, the school director. He was assisted by Father Richard Beauli,eu and Deacon Claude LeBlanc, both alumni of St. Anthony, and Father Thomas Campbell. Alumni also served as readers and gift b~:arers.

Hundreds of former students attended the Mass and were delighted to see some of their teachers, the Sisters of the Holy Cross of the Seven Douleurs, who were also present. Music was provided by the upper level classes under the direction of principal Mrs. Elizabeth Lavigne with Michel Labens playing the organ.

After Mass the l:ongregation processed to the school and entered through the newly refurbished foyer. The entire school was open for visitors to tour and reminisce.

Throughout, the halls were decorated with memorabilia from

awards, newspaper articles and photos to commemorative souvenirs, old report cards a'nd an attendance record from 1908.

A popular place to visit was the library, where a C9PY of every yearbook published was available for viewing. On the stage a display of old desks, teaching materials and uniforms was set up. All former students who signed a registration

book received a St. Anthony School Centennial name tag, helpful in recognizing former classmates, accompanied by an angel pen. A complimentary luncheon added to the day's festivities. Those who attended agreed it was a day filled with wonderful memories of their days at St. Anthony School. More celebrations are planned for throughout the year.

Catholic Digest sponsors poster contest ST. PAUL, Minn. (CNS) Catholic Digest magazine is sponsoring a poster contest open to children from kindergarten through eighth grade.

With their poster entry, contestants must answer the question: "What is it that I do - even one small thing, like one pebble dropped into a pond - that makes my world a better place?"

The posters should be II inches by 17 inches and include the child's name, age, adoress and phone

number. Children may send in their own entries or tell their schools about the contest and challenge their classmates to give it a try themselves.

Catholic Digest will feature the winners, their art, their families, their schools and their parishes in the magazine next spring.
