New Bedford stu'dent wins AIDS Ministry art contest Eleven year old Ashley Walecka of New Bedford, a student at the Holy Family-Holy Name School, is the winner of an art contest sponsored by the Fall River diocesan Office of AIDS Ministry. Illustrating her caption "AIDS affects everyone in the world!," her entry is a crayon drawing of planet Earth surrounded on each side: by a semicircle of persons, big and small, clothed in a rainbow of colors, and inextricably linked with each other by clasped hands. A cord connects the two groups, bridging the gaps and creating an unbroken ring

of the family of man. Over them flies a small white dove carrying the crossed red ribbon which has become wellknown as the symbol of the HIV/AIDS virus and a reminder to all that there is still much to be done to combat it. Ashley 'drew the picture last spring while in fifth grade in response to an invitation from AIDS Ministry to students in grades kindergarten through 8 to create a piece of art expressing their understanding of how HIV and AIDS affect our communities today. The contest had a dual purpose: it provided a teachable moment in calling students'

attention to the pandemic, and it marked the beginning of preparations for this year's diocesan observance of World AIDS Day. Contest rules announced that the award-winning design would be part of the December I st World AIDS Day Mass and program. Celebrated on the first day of-December each year around the world, World AIDS Day is designed to promote education and awareness of issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Dr. Krysten Winter-Green, director of diocesan AIDS Ministry, reported that several hundred contest entries

were received and that the judging process was a two-step one. In the preliminary stage, AIDS Ministry office staff and volunteers and persons living with and affected by HIV/AIDS reviewed all entries, selecting II finalists. These II were then presented to Bishop Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., who then chose the winning entry from the group. All judging was done without any knowledge of entrants' names or schools. Other entrants whose drawings were chosen as finalists in the contest were Turn to page /3
