Father' Fragomeni will also present a leadership seminar for directors and coordinators of religious education, principals, priests and deacons.

"The convention is one of the major catechetical events offered in the diocese each year," said Deacon Bruce Bonneau, diocesan director of Religious Education, who is coordinating the event.

"Although its focus is for volunteer parish catechists, the convention also offers a wide range of workshops for those who teach in schools, RCIA programs, or for those who would like to deepen their knowledge of the faith," Bonneau added.

"We have many new presenters this year."

In addition to three morning and workshop sessions, exhibitors from major publishing companies and diocesan apostolates will be present in the gymnasium.

Catholic Social Services will also be offering two presentations of the Diocesan Abuse Workshop for those who need to fulfill that diocesan mandate. Susan Desrosiers, LICSW will be the presenter.

Among the 27 workshops on such topics as lesson planning, workirig with teens, the role of parents, prayer, biblical women, sacramentality, the Old Testament, respect for life, healthy relation-

ships, reconciliation and the Eucharist, are: "Sowers of rrayer," by Jane E. Ayer, director of Religious Education, Catholic Schools Office, Archdiocese of Boston; "These are a Few of My Favorite Things," by :John E. Collins, principal of Kane Elementary School in Marlborough, and a consultant for Sadlier; and "Celebrating Liturgies with Youth," by Msgr.

Stephen J. Avila, director of the Diocesan Office of Worship; and four workshops in Spanish.

'The Convention'Committee has worked diligently throughout the year to provide a meaningful and exciting day for those who are engaged in the teaching of the faith and for those who wish to deepen it," Bonneau noted.

Registration for the Convention opens at 7:30 a.m. Following the Mass at 9 a.m., the keynote address will be at '10: 15 a.m.

The morning workshops will be from 11 :20 a.m., to 12:05 p.m.: 12:55 to 1:40 p.m.; and from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m., when the Convention ends. The two lunch periods are from 12: 10 to 12:30 p.m., and 12:30 to 12:50 p.m.

Continuing education units are available for deacons, and professional development points for Catholic School teachers.

Peace Mass, procession is October 13 FALL RIVER - Members of the Fall River diocese are invited to join Bishop George W. Coleman in the 28th annual procession and Mass for Peace on October 13, the Columbus Day holiday.

As in previous years, marchers will meet no later than 5:45 p.m., at St. Mary's Cathedral to process along South Main Street for approximately a half-mile to St. Anne's Church near Kennedy Park.

The procession will begin at 6

p.m. Marchers will carry candles, recite the rosary and sing Marian hymns in various languages.

At 7 p.m., the Mass for Peace will be celebrated in St. Anne's. Bishop Coleman will be the principal celebrant and homilist. The liturgy will last about one-and-a-half hours.

Those who are disabled or handicapped should proceed directly to St. Anne's Church where' a special area in the church will be designated for them.

Justice system members to be cited at Red Mass By

FALL RIVER - Two judges, a probation officer and an attorney will be presented the Fall River diocese's St. Thomas More Award for service at the annual Red Mass Sunday, October 26, at 3 p.m., in St. Mary's Cathedral.

The honorees are: Judge James M. Cronin, first justice of the Bristol Division of the Juvenile Court Department of the Massachusetts Trial Court, who will receive the judge's award; Joseph Hasset, chief probation officer of ~he Superior Court for Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket Counties,

who will receive the court officer's award; Attorney Francis M. O'Boy of Taunton, who will receive the lawyer's award; and Judge John A. Markey, retired first justice of the Third District Court of Bristol at New Bedford, who will receive the ecumenical award.

Bishop George W. Coleman will be the celebrant and homilist at the Red Mass. It is so named because of the red vestments worn during the Mass of the Holy Spirit, whose blessing will be invoked upon the medal recipients.

A reception and banquet will

follow at White's of Westport, where Justice Robert A. Mulligan, newly-appointed chief justice for Administration and Management of the Trial Court of Massachusetts, will be the keynote speaker.

The awards are named for St. Thomas More, a 16 th -century English layman who was a lawyer and martyred for opposition to the divorce of England's King Henry VIII and for refusing to renounce papal authority.

Judge Cronin was appointed a judge in 1987 and has presided in the Fall River Juvenile Court

since then. He has also served in New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro and Barnstable.

He received his law degree from Boston College Law School in 1969 and did his undergradu-

ate training at Harvard University.

Our Jonah mission This week's Church Scripture readings began with the story ofJonah, God's reluctant prophet. The setting for this book of the. Bible takes place in the post-exile period when the Jewish people had returned to their homeland around the fifth century, B.c. The hardships of the returning exiles, along with horrendous poverty and the ceaseless labor to rebuild a land left desolate and destroyed, provides the background for the Jonah story.

The returning Jews from Babylon were convinced that they were cast into exile because of their infidelity to God. As a result, they developed an exclusivity and rigorous observance of the law. They became extremely nationalistic, believing that God's mercy was especially reserved for them alone. In such an atmosphere they developed a narrow and vindictive mind-set.

Jonah was called by God to preach a message of mercy an~ forgiveness to the hated Assyrians, the only prophet assigned by God to bring such ministry to Gentiles. Not only must he associate with an idolatrous people, but also he was designated as the instrument through which God's mercy is brought to them. This is simply too much for Jonah to take, so he flees the Lord, and the rest is proverbial history. The story of Jonah presents the shocking truth that other nations and peoples may also be dear to the heart of God. It really is a most difficult truth to accept, given the circumstances of the times. It's didactic intent, simply put, is that God's merciful designs are not to be limited; they include all nations, even Israel's traditional enemies.

What a message for our own times. As we once again see a post exiled people forming a new state, Israel, taken from the land of their enemies, there seems to be a great reluctance to even whisper the word mercy. The lands of Jonah are yet filled with revenge and retaliation. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth have once again emerged as public policy. In such a situation, peace will never become a reality. The ordi~ nary people of the Middle East want peace. However, the extremists are out-of-control. When the excessive and unreasonable are guiding national strategies, then destruction and dissolution are the order of the day.

If peace is to be established in the Middle East, the first condition must be to root out the causes of disq)rd, which lead to war. We need new Jonahs to preach the message of forgiveness and justice. Obviously, this is not happening.

People cannot put up with such'an amount of disorder; the result is that even when warfare is absent, the world in which we live is constantly beset by strife and violence. Since the same evils are also to be found in 'the relations between nations, it is of the utmost importance, if these evils are to be overcome and if headlong violence is to be checked, for internationai bodies to work more effectively and more'resolutely together, and coordinate the effort. Nations of the international family should not be doing their own thing. We should not ignore the structure and resolve of the United Nations. It has a purpose in striving for international peace, which should be supported by all peoples. The U.N. represents the attempts at laying the foundations on an international level for a community of all people to work towards the very serious problems of our time and the prevention of war of all kinds.

As reluctant as Jonah was, he did go to his enemies and preached a message of forgiveness. This is the same message we must surface as we attempt to'bring healing to those hurting lands. It i,s the basic foundation on which a lasting peace can be built. In our. global community, every nation must work together to achieve the "Peace of Jerusalem."

Despite the terrorists and avengers, we must be convinced that this goal is attainable if we realize that it is God's work and not our own. Jews, Muslims and Christians acknowledge the one Ood. Let's put that recognition into searching for a lasting peace. .

If Msgr. Murnion's vision is to materialize, it must start with a desire to look into each other much more deeply than we do, to put aside labels and first impressions, to forget biases and prejudices, and to open our hearts to each other so that we ca'n speak heart-to-heart.

Understanding is at the heart of dialogue. More important, it gives heart to the priesthood.

Coleman will be the principal celebrant of a Mass honoring the beatification of Mother Teresa on October 19 at 4 p.m.

The Mass will take place at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 565 County Street, the church Mother Teresa attended Mass during her visit to the Diocese of Fall River in June of 1995.

'In Rome on that same day, Pope John Paul II is scheduled to officiate at the beatification ceremony of Mother Teresa, founder of the Missionaries of Charity.

Mother Teresa, known worldwide for her care' and compassion for the sick and poor, died on Sept.

5, 1997, and Pope John Paul II waived the traditional five-year waiting period giving permission for her beatification process to begin just 15 months later.

As a prelude to the Mass honoring Mother T~resa, the parish will host a nine-day prayer service beginning today, October 10, at 5 p.m., continuing at the same time each day until October 18.

The service will include expositi0n of the Blessed Sacram~nt, recitation of the rosary, special prayers for Mother Teresa and Benediction.

Pope's health sparks media talk and prayers among Catholics Bv JOHN THAVIS CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE VATICAN CITY - At the beginning of one of the busiest months of his pontificate, Pope John Paul II's continuing health problems prompted speculation in the media, concern among some cardinals and prayers by the faithful.

After announcing the names of 30 new cardinals last week, the .83-year-old pontiff carried out a full week of scheduled events holding talks with international , leaders, meeting with bishops and ,Church groups, presiding over a general audience, welcoming the new Anglican primate and celebrating a canonization Mass for three new saints.

He went through his schedule appearing much as he has over the last few months: tired, unable to stand or walk, strug. gling at times to speak, but soldiering on to the end of each event.

The pope suffers from a degenerative neurological disorder believed to be Parkinson's disease and has been slowed by arthritis

of the knee and the effects of several surgeries.

The most striking remarks intended "philosophically" but which ended up in headlines around the world - came from Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna, Austria.

"The entire world is experiencing a pope who is sick, who is disabled, and who is dying - I don't know how near death he is - who is approaching the last days and months of his life," Cardinal Schonbom told the Austrian state radio ORF October 2.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, head of the Congregation for Bishops, said "there's no cause for alarm" about the pontiff.

"Certainly he has difficulty with speech, especially when he's tired, and he has problems walking. But he's still a strong man," he said.

Asked about the possibility of papal resignation, Cardinal Re responded: "The Holy Father is obedient to God's will."

Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, head of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, said the fact that

the pope's October schedule was being maintained showed there was no sense of panic at the Vatican.

The following day, Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller met with the pope and said he did not look noticeably worse than in the past.

Polish Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, the pope's longtime personal secretary, did not seem overly concerned about the pope's health as he chatted with r~porters October 2. The pope was meeting with Lithuanian President Rolandas Paksas in an adjacent room.

The German magazine Bunte quoted Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as saying in an interview that the pope was "in a bad way" and that people should pray for him.

Even as the pope's health issues were making news around the world, the Vatican added two major events to the pope's already heavy October schedule.

"Our young people seem to be coming out in greater numbers to support the sanctity of all human life and we hope by their witness and compassion that many others will be moved to protect all life."

Father Stephen A. Fernandes, diocesan director of the Apostolate, came with a group from his parish in New Bedford and said he thought there was an increase in attendance from last year.

The walk raises funds for various Pro-Life organizations and money raised goes to buy blankets, diapers and other items for infants and mothers. Some funds are used to secure housing for mothers and their children.

The U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision looks like a formidable structure, but it too can fall.

As John Paul II said in his January 2003 address to the diplomatic corps, "Yet everything can change.

It depends on each of us. Everyone can develop within himself his potential for faith, for honesty, for respect for others and for commitment to the service of others."

Action requires virtue. Like all virtues, the virtue of "political responsibility" must avoid exceSS and deficiency and find the mean.

Political prudence is not concerned with calculation of personal benefit, but with determining proper means to achieve the common good. Mere politicians must rise to the level of statesmen.

In their recent statement, Living the Gospel ofLife: A Challenge to American Catholics, the U.S. bishops point to special virtues that we need if we are to further the Gospel of Life in the public arena, courage and honesty, humility to listen, perseverance and prudence to know when and how.

As John Paul II challenges us: "To all the members of the Church, the people of life and for life, I make this most urgent appeal, that together we may offer this world of ours new signs of hope, and work to ensure that justice and solidarity will increase and that a new culture of human life will be affirmed, for the building of an authentic civilization of truth and love."

Ten legal reasons to reject Roe By

Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court rarely auract much public interest.

But one Supreme Court decision eclipses all others in the past century. Far from being forgotten, in the 30 years since Roe v. Wade announced that the "constitutional" right to privacy encompasses a woman's decision to abort her child, its fame (or infamy) just keeps growing.

How Roe is Perceived For many Americans, Roe'is a symptom of and catalyst for a continuing dccline in American culture and institutions. And how does one begin to assess the meaning and impact of destroying more than 40 million children?

Many other Americans, less auuned to public policy matters, hold a very di fferent view of Roe v. Wade. They see Roe as being immutable, permanent, "settled law," "Ab0l1ion is a constitutional right." End of discussion.

In 30 years, the Roe abortion license has been elevated by some to the statu re of "freedom of speech," "trial by jury," and other bedrock Amcrican principles.

It is not surprising that many people share this distOl1ed view of Roe v. Wadc. For 30 years, the

abortion industry has refined and perfected this message.

Roe has also become a lodestar for abortion advocates and the politicians who support their agenda. Any event or policy affecting a child before or near birth is minutely scrutinized for its potential to "undermine Roe v. Wade." Anything (and anyone) that threatens the shaky "constitutionality" of Roe must be stopped. For example, state laws which punish violent attacks on unborn children and their mothers are denounced as schemes "designed to chip away at the constitutional rights of women." Even expanding eligibility under the State Children's Health Insurance Program to provide prenatal care to children from conception onward is decried as "a gueri IIa attack on abortion rights."

Allegiance to Roe has become the sine qua non for presidential aspirants of one political party and a litmus test used by many politicians in evaluating judicial nominees. Senate filibusters are being used to block confirmation votes on nominees. Individuals who have received the American Bar Association's highest recommendation based on their knowledge of law, their integrity and

judicial temperament are blocked chiefly because abortion lobbyists suspect they are not sufficiently deferential to Roe v. Wade.

Under the legal system established by the U.S. Constitution, the power to make laws is vested in Congress and retained by state legislatures. It is not the role of the Supreme Court to substitute the policy preferences of its members for those expressed in laws enacted by the people's elected representatives. The role of the judiciary in constitutional review is to determine if the law being challenged infringes on a constitutionally protected right.

2. The Court misrepresents the history of abortion practice and· attitudes toward abortion.

The apparent purpose of the Roe opinion's long historical excursion is to create the impression that abortion had been widely

practiced and unpunished until the appearance of restrictive laws in the prudishly Victorian 19th century. One example is adequate to show how distorted is Justice Harry Blackmun's rendition of history. He must overcome a huge hurdle in Hippocrates, the "Father

of Medicine," and his famous Oath which has guided medical ethics for more than 2,000 years.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) Vatican officials said Pope John Paul II's esteem for Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley, OFM Cap., of Boston cannot be doubted, even though he did not name the archbishop to the College of Cardinals last week.

The Capuchin Franciscan archbishop, appointed to lead and heal the troubled Boston Archdiocese, "is incredibly well respected here," one official said.

But, he said, people must remember that being a cardinal is not simply an honor, it callies with it real time-consuming duties serving the universal Church by being a member of Vatican congregations and councils.

"Archbishop O'Malley has enough to do in Boston right now," the official said. "Not placing further responsibilities on his shoulders makes sense to me."

The naming of new cardinals is the personal prerogative of the pope,. yet a dozen factors go into deciding who makes the list and who does not, the official said.

One of the factors is "the geopolitical balance" of the College 0'[ Cardinals, two Vatican officials said.

All of the officials interviewed spoke on condition of anonymity.

Included on Pope John Paul's September 28 list were Archbishop Angelo Scola of Venice, although his predecessor, Cardinal Marco Ce, is 78; and Archbishop Ennio Antonelli of Florence, even though his predecessor, Cardinal Silyano Piovanelli, is 79.

Despite the conventional wisdom, Archbishop O'Malley had been on most observers' lists of likely candidates for receiving the red hat.

The early affirmations were based on two factors: The archbishop of Boston traditionally has been a cardinal and Archbishop O'Malley deserved special recognition and support from the Vatican for his ministry in Boston in the wake of the clergy sex abuse scandal.

One Vatican official even said, "Maybe he is the cardinal 'in pectore,''' the one whose name Pope John Paul said he is keeping secret ' for now.

VATICAN CITY - Since Pope John Paul II was elected in 1978, the face of the Church has changed - in some aspects dramatically. Numbers tell part of the story.

At the broadest level, the number of Catholics in the world has jumped more than 40 percent, from 757 million to 1.06 billion at the end of 200 1, the last . year for which official Church statistics have been published. .

More significant under this pontificate are the geographical areas of growth, which indicate a Third World shift. Catholics in Africa have increased nearly 150 percent and in Asia more than 80 percent: In Europe the increase has been only five percent, and the number of Catholics has actually gone down in recent years.

In the United States, the number of Catholics rose from 48 million to 64 million over the same period. ,That's an increase of about 33 percent, four percentage points higher than the general U.S. population growth.

When it comes to those who work in a ministerial or teaching capacity for the Church, there's been an increase in most categories under Pope John Paul, but a decrease among members of religious orders.

Overall, the "workforce for the' Church's apostolate" has jumped from 1.6 million to 2.8 million. The number of bishops in the world increased from 3,600 to more than 4,600 - and more than 70 percent of them have been appointed by Pope John Paul.

After declining for several years, the number of diocesan priests was up to 266,500 at the end of 2001, about 8,000 more than when the pope took office.

The number of religious priests has declined steadily, from about 158,000 to 139,000, and religious brothers are down from about 75,000 to 55,000. The sharpest drop 'has been in the number of women religious, which has gone from 985,000 to 792,000.

missionary priests has declined in many parts of the world, the number of indigenous catechists has exploded. When Pope John Paul assumed the papacy, the Church had 173,000 catechists; today there are more than 2.8 million. : The number of "lay missionaries" - not even a category when the pope was elected - has now reached 139,000, most of them in South America.

Permanent deacons h~v芦 emerged as a pastoral force during this pope's term: They numbered 5,500 in 1978 and are more than 28,000 today. Nearly half of them are in the United States.

Despite what the Vatican considers as hopeful trends in priestly vocations, there are far fewer priests per Catholic today than when the pope came to office. In 1978 the worldwide ratio was 1,800 Catholics for every priest; today it is more than 2,600 Catholics per priest. .

The Church has bolstered its social and educational roles under Pope John Paul II. For example, there are more than 106,000 Church-lUn health and welfare institutions today, compared to 64,000 in 1978. The figure includes clinics, homes for the elderly and disabled, orphanages and maniage counseling centers.

The number of Church-run schools has gone way up, and enrollment has increased by 40 percent or more under Pope John Paul. At the university level, the increase is more dramatic: Enrollment at Catholic higher institutes of learning has risen from about two million in 1978 to 4.6 million today.

At the Vatican, the pope has continued the internationalization of the Roman Curia. When he came to office, Italians controlled about half the Vatican's . top 20 departments. Today, Italians hold only four of those top spots.

The pope also has made a direct and strong im~ pact on the makeup of the College of Cardinals, the institution that will elect his successor. Last week he expanded the total number of cardinals to a record 194: Of the 135 cardinals under the age of 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave, the pope has appointed all but five.

By CINDY WOODEN CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE VATICAN CITY - Just over six years and six weeks after her death, Mother Teresa of Calcutta will be beatified by Pope John Paul II October 19 in Sl. Peter's Square.

The founder of the Missionaries of Charity died of cardiac arrest Sept. 5, 1997, in Calcutta, India.

A mere 15 months later, Pope John Paul gave permission for her beatification process to begin, even though Church rules require a waiting period of five years.

Small of stature and full of energy, she was acclaimed as a living saint during her lifetime. She won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize and, just three months before her death, was awarded the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor.

Wearing a white and blue sari, she traveled the world delivering a single message: that love and caring are the most important things in the world.

"The biggest disease today," she once said, "is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for and deserted by everybody. The greatest evil is the lack of love and charity, the terrible- indifference toward one's neighbor who lives at the roadside, assaulted by exploitation, corruption, poverty and disease."

Born Aug. 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia, to parents of ethnic Albanian origin, Agnes Ganxhe Bojaxhiu attended public schools and participated in a Catholic sodality with an interest in foreign missions.

She later said that she knew at age 12 that she wanted to be a missionary.

She left home in 1928 to join the Loretto Sisters in Dublin, Ireland. The sisters sent her to India at

the beginning of 1929 to study at their novitiate in Darjeeling.

Teaching at a fashionable Catholic girls' school in Calcutta, she could not ignore the incredible poverty around her, especially the suffering endured by the dying and destitute on the city's streets.

Riding on an Indian train Sept. 10, 1946, sh~ received what she described as a "call within a calL" "The message was clear," she later said. "I was to leave the convent and help the poor, while living among them."

Two years later, the Vatican gave her permission to leave the Loretto Sisters and follow her new calling under the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Calcutta.

After three months of medical training with the American Medical Missionary Sisters in Patna, India, Mother Teresa went into the Calcutta slums, opening a school for children who had had no access to education.

Soon volunteers, many of them her former students, came to join her. .

In 1950 the Missionaries of Charity became a diocesan religious community, and IS years later the Vatican recognized it as a pontifical congregation, directly under Vatican' jurisdiction.

In 1952 the city of Calcutta gave Mother Teresa a former Hindu hostel, which she and her sisters turned into the Nirmal Hriday (Pure Heart) Home for Dying Destitutes. , Although most Missionaries of Charity are sisters working with the poor, orphans, the aged, the handicapped and the dying, Mother Teresa also founded a branch of contemplative sisters, contemplative brothers and an order of priests.

The missionaries work in more than 130 countries.

CALCUTTA, India - The Missionaries '01' Charity motherhouse in Calcutta became a beehive of activity as the scheduled October 19 beatification of their founder drew near.

Some of the nuns classified relics of Mother Teresa of Calcutta into three categories, following the tradition of the Church, said the founder's successor, Sister Nirmala Joshi.

First-class relics come from the body of a person declared blessed or a saint. Sister Nirmala explained that though Mother Teresa's body was not exhumed, the sisters have some of her hair and blood.

"These had to be sealed, authenticated with a certificate and the postulator's seal, and treated with reverence," she said.

Second-class relics are articles used by a beatified or canonized person, and third-class relics are , items touched by first-class relics.

Sister Nirmala said second-class relics in the sisters' possession include Mother Teresa's clothes, sheets, bed and things she used in their various houses when she visited them.

Some of these relics have already been sent to Rome, Sister Nirmala said.

The nuns made small relics of Mother Teresa's clothing, placed in plastic-covered prayer cards and authenticated with the postulator's seal.

Third-class relics, to be made for public distribution, will generally be made from cloth that, has touched Mother Teresa's tomb. Pieces of the cloth will be fixed on prayer cards and authenticated.

Missionaries of Charity will focus on poor at beatification VATICAN CITY (CNS) Many nations will have offIcial delegations at the October 19 beatitication of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but members of the Missionaries of Chruity are focusing their attention on a less formal' group of special guests.

Seats at the ceremony in Sl. Peter's Square already have been reserved for 3,000 men, women and children who eat or sleep at the soup kitchens and shelters in Rome run by members of the order founded

by Mother Teresa.

Immediately after the Mass, the guests will be served lunch in the Vatican's audience hall.

The beatification is "a celebration to give glory to God for what he has done through Mother Teresa," said Missionaries ofCharity Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, promoter of her cause. "MotherTeresa does not need our applause October 19."

He said the Missionaries ofCharity hope the beatification will cause a "ripple effect," reminding the world of the call to serve God in the poor.

And while the tiny nun in her blue-trimmed sari would have had to force herself to smile in the midst ofsuch attention when she was alive, "she has a different perspective now," the priest said.

"She just wanted to be a pencil in God's hands," he said. "She used to say, 'God uses nothingness to show his greatness,''' and the ceremony should be focused on faith in him.

The beatification will take place on World Mission Sunday, a day Pope John Paul II usually dedicates to highlighting the Christian obligation to explicitly proclaim salvation in Christ.

While there is no doubt Mother Teresa was a "missionary" of charity and never hid her Catholic faith, winning converts to Catholicism was not the first focus of her work, Father Kolodiejchuk said.

"She wanted to proclaim the

Gospel not with words, but by being a light, a radiance of God's pres-路 ence," he said.

A month before the beatilication, the Vatican and the Missionaries already had received 120,000 requests for the free tickets to the Mass.

The ceremony, Father Kolodiejchuk said, is not the result of a populrnity contest or the universal Catholic Church's pDsthumous recognition of Mother Teresa's work - a Catholic version of her 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

"People really had a sense that she was holy," he said. "They saw Jesus in her. It was not just because of the work she did, because others do that work, too."

Father Kolodiejchuk met Mother Teresa in Father Kolodiejchuk met Mother Teresa in 1977 and became associated with the Missionaries 0 Charity shortly afterward, even though the Missionaries of Charity Fathers was not founded until 1984.

As the postulator of her cause, he has spent the past four years poring over thousands of letters and speeches that she wrote and the transcripts of hours of interviews with people who knew her.

The investigation has convinced him that she not only engaged in hard, holy work, but she was a saint whose faith was heroic.

"She would say, 'Accept whatever God gives and accept whatever God takes with a smile.' That sounds simple, but it was painful for her and profound. She was focused on her beloved and on pleasing him," the priest said.

Father Kolodiejchuk said he believes it was no coincidence that Pope John Paul decided to preside over the beatification as part of the celebration of his 25th anniversary as pope.

Father Kolodiejchuk agreed with those who described Mother Teresa as "the saint of this pontificate."

"There was more than friendship between them," he'said. "There was love and esteem and trust."

Kathleen Burt, who has guided the school for the past 23 years, gave her thoughts on the event.

"Ms. Doran is an exceptional young woman who possesses and enviable combination ofintellectual ability, athletic skill and grace," said Servant. "Mr. Paine is our most motivated student athlete. He is competitive in the classroom and he is preparing himself for Division I athletics on the collegiate level."

Doran is the daughter of David and Anne Doran and is ranked in the top one percent of her class.

She is a member of three honor societies and captain of the soccer, winter and spring track teams.

She also volunteers at Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

Paine is the son of David and Claudette Paine and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the football, basketball and spring track teams and a cap-

lain on two. He has amassed over 1,200 hours of volunteer service as a youth football coach, at theYMCA and mUflY other places including the McCauley House Soup Kitchen.

St. Margaret's students complete study on environmental enrichment BUZZARDS BAY - Six students from St. Margaret's Regional School recently got some hands on science experience when they participated in an Environmental Enrichment路 Project studying submerged aquatic 路vegetation. The project was funded by the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce Marge Koskela Fisheries Grant. It enabled the students to add this project to their environmental program along with The Agawam River Project, The Cranberries on Mars Project, and 'The Vernal Pool Project. ' The students met every Tuesday evening over seven weeks to collect water samples and do tests studying the physical characteristics at two different locations. They also did classroom work such as inputting data into the Globe International Database, researching the life cYl::le of zostera marina or eel grass, and also created posterboards and contour maps featuring their research.

The grant was created in order to enhance the knowledge of submerged aquatic vegetation species and the impact it has on fish and shellfish in Buzzards Bay. By promoting a healthy ecosystem and sharing their findings with the community via lab books, 'display

tanks and presentations, students are getting hands-on knowledge of scientific research.

They have had two tanks set up since the summer in which eel grass is growing and the experimental phase has gone well according to Pamela Caradimos, project coordinator. Students have been able to ' interact with experts from several places including the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

The ultimate goal of the project is for students to actually plant eel grass in two needy areas of Buzzards, Bay over the next few years. "The Marge Koskela Fisheries Grant has provided this great opportunity for our stu.dents," said Caradimos. "They are learning and discussing the positive effects of this project and the necessity of it on our ecosystem."

The community presentation will be held at the school November 5 at 6:30 p.m. Poster boards and a book wi 11 be on display at the Bourne Library and the Wareham Free Library though the end of the year.

Fall River diocese marks its centennial The following are the next in a series of historical sketches of the parishes comprising the Diocese of Fall River, founded in 1904. The series will run in chronological order from oldest to newest parish, according to diocesan archives, concluding in March, 2004, the centennial anniversary of the diocese. Please note that ALL parish histories will run in the order they were founded - including parishes that have been suppressed or merged. Histories of merged parishes will run according to the time-line.

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish at Visitation Church, Wellfleet-North Eastham WELLFLEET - It is believed . that fishennan from the Azores and Nova Scotia who settled on the Outer Cape were the first to bring the Catholic faith to Wellfleet and Truro. They were served in private homes as early as the 1850s by priests from Harwich and Provincetown...

In 1900 Father Manuel C. Terra, pastor at St. Peter's in Provincetown, directed the building of an old schoolhouse in Wellfleet, naming it OurLady of Lourdes Chapel.

Catholicism flourished so in 1910 Our Lady of Lourdes was named a parish under the care ofthe Sacred Hearts Fathers, with boundaries including the towns of Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham and Brewster.

The second pastor, Father Hilarion Eikerling, SS.Cc., designed and built Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Wellfleet Center for $24,300 in 1912 and added a rectory to the church a few months after it opened.

Father Dennis Spykers from Holland served Wellfleet as pastor from 1928-1962. He had a beautiful flower garden in the back of the rectory complete with a fountain and goldfish pond. Beloved by parish-

ioners, summer visitors and townspeople, Father Spykers was honored by the town in 1952 with a citation "naturalizing" him as a "true born Wellfleeter."

Having served the Wellfleet parish for 77 years, the Sacred Hearts Fathers gave up that responsibility in the summer of 1987 and moved to care for missions in southern Texas.

Father Bernard Kelly was the first diocesan priest to serve here and did so until early 1997 when FatherJohn F. Andrews took over. In Father Kelly's time the Diocese of Fall River bought 10 acres ofland on Rt. 6 in Wellfleet for possible use as a future church expansion.

Since coming to the parish in 1997 Father Andrews reorganized the St. Vincent de Paul Society, set up a working Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Finance Council and began long range plans for a new church in Wellfleet.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church was sold to the town of Wellfleet, which is still in discussion about its future use. .

A small house in South Wellfleet was bought for temporary use as. a parish rectory and all Masses were moved to Visitation Church in North

Eastham, a building dedicated in summer 1952.

The Diocesan Pastoral Planning Committee and Bishop Sean O'Malley OFM Cap., changed parish boundaries so that the parish now has all ofWellfleet, halfofTruro and half of Eastham. When the new church is built in Wellfleet it will be in the center of the new parish

In a major fund-raising effort, the parish has placed $2 million in a savings account for a new church which will be less than half of construction costs for the church, hall and rectory. There are about 400 families registered in the parish.

81. Dominic's Parish, Swansea SWANSEA -In 1911, the greatest challenge in Swansea facing Bishop Daniel F. Feehan was finding a multi-lingual priest to care for the diverse cultural needs of Catholics there. Irish and Italian and French-Canadian families, many of them working on local farms were being joined by Portuguese coming from the Azores.

Some of the most influential Catholics in town, led by Theodule Gamache, suggested that Dominican Father Bernard Percot, 50, a native of Paris, France, who had served in the military and who was fluent in Portuguese, French, Italian and English, be appointed lis the pastor of a new parish. .

tion, contacted the Dominican Provincial, and on Oct. 21, 1911 named Father Percot the pastor of the new parish. It was given the name St. Dominic to honor the Dominican's founder.

The pastor celebrated the first Mass at the Brook Side Farm of Norbert P. Berard. Alexander Boule, who had worked zealously for the

parish, donated land. Architect Louis G. Destremps drew up the plans and work began by contractor Athanore Dussault.

So quickly did building progress that three months after its founding, Bishop Feehan came to bless the new church and on March 3, 1912 the first Mass was said in the church.

Within 10 years St. Dominic's listed 150families in the parish, their number increasing in the summer . months when vacationers took' up residence in Ocean Grove.

Father Percot, whose rectory at the time was across the street from the current rectory, left in 1927 and was succeeded by Father Louis Prevost. When the latter was reassigneq after only a year, he was replaced by Father Antony O. Ponte, . who remained until October, 1951.

During his 23-year pastorate the current rectory was built and the Women's Guild was fonned.

Father Thomas F. Walsh became . the fourth pastor, who. made improvement." to the church building ,. and enlarged the parking lot.

Father James A. Drury became pastor in 1954, upgraded the Catholic Charities Appeal in the parish and established the St. Vincent de Paul . Society.

In 1957 Father George E. Sullivan was named pastor and founded the CYO program for

the parish youth.

Father William R. Jordan arrived in ]96] and led the 5()'h anniversary celebrations of the parish. He was succeeded by Father James A. McCarthy; followed briefly by Father Leo Curry in 1969.

Msgr. Thomas Harrington, vice chancellor of the diocese, administrated the parish from October, 1969 to February, 1970 when Father Daniel A. Carey arrived. Town development resulted in the growth of parishioners from 400 families to 1,000 families, forced the parish to expand to meet tl1e needs of new parishioners and a multi-purpose Parish Center was built. When completed in May, ]975 it was named in honor of Father Carey.

Father William Campbell became the II th pastor in 1980, developed parish ministries and remained until] 994. In quick succession, Father John F. Andrews and Father Bernard Vanasse became subsequent pastors ofSt. Dominic's.

The current pastor, FatherJoseph F. Viveiros, assumed the pastorate in October, 1995.
