Archbishop Urges War on Poverty BOSTON (NC) - Citing the "absurdity" of poverty in our cities, Archbishop Humberto S. Medeiros of Boston has issued a 59-page pastoral' hitter calling on all segments of the community to assist him in combatting urban ills and poverty. Appealing specifically to Religious, professionals, and service officials, the archbishop asked that their expertise be dedicated to an all-out effort to help those "entombed in poverty" and victimized by a general and "listless sharing of left-overs." He cited as examples "the elderly who are imprisoned in their apartments because of fear," the unemployed, and restless, victims of unscrupulous slum landlords, and, "poor fathers (who) weep
in tenements because their children, have been 'bitten by rats." The Archbishop made a number of recommendations to combat the problems. He urged priests of the archdiocese to become a "symbol of evengelical poverty" to the poor people they serve, "set up a series of monthly discussion groups" on the subject of social justice, and adopt a "parish sharing" pro- ' gram in which inner-city parishes are aided by regular collections from other parishes. William R. Jordan, pastor of St. Louis Parish since 1967 who died Tuesday night in St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River after a brief rillness. Father Jordan, son of the late William S. and the late Mrs. Mary L. Dufficy Jordan, was born Nov. 4, 1908 in New Bed.ford. Chamber of Commerce Awards Three priests of the Fall River Diocese will be honored for exceptional service to the community by the Fall River Chamber of Commerce at a special recognition dinner to be held at Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea on Wednesday evening, Sept. 6. The three priests, assistant pastors in Fall River parishes, are recognized for the "finest type of public service." The honored priests are Rev. John R. Foister, assistant pastor at Notre Dame Parish, Fall River,
for u'nselfish devotion to the emergency services of the Fall River Fire Department; Rev. Paul F. McCarrick, assistant pastor at St. Pa-trick Parish, Fall River, for outstanding service to area youth; Rev. Luciano J. Pereira, assistant pastor at St. Michael Parish, F:all River, for exceptional service to area immigrants. Father Foister Recipient of the "Outstanding Firefighter Award," Father Foister, 40, is a native of Fall River. For the past five years, he has
also served as Chaplain to the Fall River Fire Department. During this time, he has been officially commended many times by the Fall River Fire Department and the Swansea Police Department for the part he played in rescue attempts. Ordained on May 21, 1966 in St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River, Father Robillard's first assignment was as an assistant at St. Hyacinth's New Bedford. In addition to the St. Louis Parish assignment in Fall River, he has also served at St. Joseph's, Attleboro; Notre Dame, Fall River and Sa<::red Heart, New Bedford.' Father Robillard's assignment is effective Wednesday, Aug. 30.
