Excitement building for Blessed Mother Teresa’s canonization

“Since we are all children of God, we must help each other to grow in holiness.” — Blessed Mother Teresa NEW BEDFORD — As a young high school student in south India, Sister John Theresa often read about Blessed Mother Teresa, who was known as “the angel of mercy.”

“I was always very interested in her and wanted to learn from her example,” Sister John Theresa recently told The Anchor. “I didn’t know about (the Missionaries of Charity) before that time, but they were working about a half-

hour from my house. When I found out, I joined.”

Little did she know that during her formative years as a novitiate, she would soon be working alongside that very same “angel of mercy” and future saint.

“I was in New York from 1994 to 1998, so Mother Teresa used to come visit sometimes every six months, or at least once a year,” Sister John Theresa said. “All I can say about Mother Teresa is she is Mother. We all called her ‘Mother.’ Mother was so simple and worked to give her children the best.”

Looking back on her nearly 22 years with the order, the current superior of the Missionaries of

Charity convent in New Bedford fondly recalled those personal encounters with the simple, humble nun whom Pope Francis will canonize a saint on September 4 in Rome.

“I can always remember being with her and her prayerfulness in the chapel, when she sat quietly with the Lord,” Sister John Theresa said. “And when she was with the poor people, she was just as quiet and calm. We would see her in the chapel after 9:30 p.m. when she would come in and tell us: ‘Children, go to bed.’ But she would often stay up late at night, sitting in her room signing papers, doing her work. We would see the light on in her room.”

Having only been ministering in the Fall River Diocese for the past two years, Sister John Theresa was not in New Bedford when Blessed Mother Teresa made her historic visit on June 14, 1995; but like many who did encounter the soon-to-be-saint, she has her own favorite memories of her beloved “Mother.”

“The last time I visited with Mother, I was with her in the airport and people were coming up to her to give them her blessing, because it was very special

for them and Mother would always say: ‘Let them come,’” Sister John Theresa said. “That was the time Mother saw a lady who had (fancy) fingernail polish on and she asked her how much she paid for that. When the lady said it cost $20, Mother said she should have given the money to her and she could have helped the poor. She always wanted to give to others.”

That legacy continues on locally through the work of her Missionaries of Charity. Among the many Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy that the four Sisters currently serving in the diocese provide include: shelter for women and children; organizing and running a Bible camp program every summer; visiting prisoners at the Bristol County House of Correction in Dartmouth and the Ash Street Jail in New Bedford; visiting area shutins; and providing education and assistance to Hispanic families.

“Mother gave herself to everybody — without regard to nationality, race, color, or religion,” Sister John Theresa said.

Upcoming Scripture Alive will delve into ‘Being Disciples of Jesus’

FALL RIVER — Sponsored by the Fall River Diocese’s Faith Formation Office, the next six-week Scripture Alive program being held in Fall River will focus on “Being Disciples of Jesus.”

“These Bible-sharing groups are something I’ve been doing for a long time now,” said Sister Frances Thomas, who has been facilitating groups for almost 10 years.

Sister Thomas runs two Scripture Alive groups, one based in East Freetown and held at St. John Neumann Parish, and the other in the conference room at the Office of Faith Formation on Highland Avenue in Fall River. Though the East Freetown group is maxed out at 15 members, there are spots are available for the Fall River group, said Sister Thomas. Incidentally, having run the groups for so long, Sister Thomas has begun to explore themed books.

“We’ve pretty much exhausted all the books,” she said. “We’ve done all the Gospels, all the letters and Revelations. We’ve done many, many books in the Old Testament.

Last year I offered [the groups] themed books and they like them. We’re still using quotes from Scripture but not all from the same book.”

“Being Disciples of Jesus” is going to take selections from the Apostles Mark, John, Luke and Matthew during the six-week session.

Sister Thomas said she uses the “Six Weeks with

the Bible” from Loyola Press because the publication fits her idea of what Scripture Alive is all about.

“This is not a Bible study group at all; it’s a Bible-sharing group,” said Sister Thomas. “The questions in these books are very, very helpful.

We’re focused on reflection and sharing, so [Loyola Press] comes up with very good questions.

We might only use one or two of them, but it leads to more sharing and good discussion.”

Sister Thomas said she has devised her own method for each session; the group will take turns reading sections of the text aloud, and then there is silence while everyone re-reads it privately. After a few minutes, Sister Thomas will ask everyone to share what has touched him or her in that reading.

“There’s no discussion, just the sharing of that insight or feeling that came,” she said. “Later, after everyone has shared that — I view it as placing it on the table and everyone accepts it — we go into the questions that are in the book.”

The no-judgment, open-mindedness is key to creating a solid and supportive group, said Sister Thomas: “The beauty of this is that many of these people have come back year after year and they get to know each other well, and there’s a real strong trust level. That’s why the East Freetown group has no openings. It’s not that they all started with me, some of them did, but others have come along

the way. They’re just sold on it; it’s become Church for them. They’re all faith-filled people in their Church community, but this is like feeding them more.”

Those who attend Scripture Alive are from all over the diocese, and one does not need to have a strong theology background to attend. In fact, you don’t need any theology education, at all, said Sister Thomas.

“There’s no background that’s needed,” she said.

“This is not Bible study. I give background about the book, but I don’t spend a lot of time on that. The important thing is the text, itself, and how it affects them in their lives.”

Sister Thomas wants to use Scripture Alive as a tool for people to move beyond what they hear on Sunday. Those “pericopes,” an extract from a

text or passage from the Bible, often are not put in context, said Sister Thomas.

“You have to know the context, what comes before, what comes after, what is this all about?” she said. “It’s when you really take the time to delve into it, let it wash over you and enter into you, every word and nuance. I love Scripture, I’m very passionate about Scripture.

“I’m happy to do it; it’s a joy for me to be with these people and share faith with them. It’s very uplifting, and I think that’s what people get out of it. It’s airing how each person shares their faith, lives their faith, and how that text inspires them.

For me, as a person who’s been a teacher all my life, it’s to see the light go on.

They have a new insight.”

attend the upcoming session both Scripture Alive groups will hearken in the 2017 year by studying Proverbs; for the Fall River group, the dates are January 5 to February 9, with possibly extending the end date due to snow days.

New Fall River diocesan directory features Mother Teresa on cover

FALL RIVER — With plans for the September 4 canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta well underway, the forthcoming Catholic Directory for the Fall River Diocese will be dedicated to the Church’s newest saint.

The newly-revised and fully updated 2016-2017 annual directory, which is slated to begin shipping the first week of September, prominently features a photo of Blessed Mother Teresa on the cover which was taken by renowned area photographer Jack Iddon Jr. during the future saint’s historic visit to the diocese in 1995. The cover was designed by Anchor intern Emilie Jolivet, a graphic design major at UMass Dartmouth in her senior year.

In the photo, Mother Teresa is seen praying inside St. Lawrence Martyr Church in New Bedford, located across the street from her Missionaries of Charity convent, which remains active to this day. The snapshot provides a unique look at a literal “saint among us” and reminds us that Mother Teresa’s legacy is still being carried out today in our diocese through the charitable efforts of the order she founded.

“There are many people in our diocese who vividly remember Mother Teresa’s visit on June 14, 1995,” said Kenneth J. Souza, reporter for The Anchor and coordinator for the directory.

gins shipping, we thought it was appropriate to take a look back at that amazing moment in our diocesan history, while honoring someone who many feel was always destined for sainthood.”

This annual information resource, published by The Anchor, has consistently been the go-to reference guide for all the parishes, offices and apostolates within the Fall River Diocese and has continued to offer more information with each subsequent edition.

Following the trend of the past few years, the fullcolor, spiral-bound directory tops out at more than 260 pages — including 11 heavy stock insert tabs and front and back covers — and is one of the most detailed editions The Anchor has published to date.

Expanded sections in this year’s directory include listings of all Religious Communities working in the diocese, and a complete listing of active and retired deacons living in the diocese, whether they are assigned to a given parish or not.

“We’re always looking for ways to refine and improve upon previous editions,” Souza said. “While the listing of 141 diocesan priests has been regularly

updated, the accounting of some 93 permanent deacons has not. We set out to rectify that this year.”

As in past years, the directory provides updated telephone and address listings of all diocesan offices, personnel, archives, priests’ residences, councils and apostolates ranging from The Anchor to Catholic Social Services and its many offices, campus ministry, the Development Office, Chancery, Faith Formation, insurance, legal, communications, scouting, shelters, vocations and much more.

The ever-popular “Parishes and Missions” section — which makes up the bulk of the book — includes updated photos of the main church, mission location (if any), and even thumbnail photos of the pastor or parochial administrator at each location. All of the Mass schedules and contact information have been updated, and The Anchor has made a concerted effort to include parish website and email addresses, which have become the key method of contact in this computer- and smartphone-savvy era.

Souza said he’s already planning ahead for next year’s directory and is considering adding an index of parish website and/or email addresses to make it easier for people to find these increasingly more common modes of contact information.

Cape student moves up in the world — 9,000 feet up — on unique service project in the Peruvian Andes Mountains

SOUTH YARMOUTH — This summer, countless teen-agers spent a good portion of their free time roaming area neighborhoods enthralled in the Pokémon Go phenomenon. They’re capturing Pokémon, collecting Pokémon balls, potions, incubating Pokémon eggs, and doing battle at Pokémon gyms.

One young man, not among the throngs enamored by the smartphone, interactive reality game, is Thomas Rezendes, a Yarmouth resident heading into his junior year at St. John Paul II High School in Hyannis.

Rezendes spent three weeks of his free time nearly 9,000 feet above sea level in the Peruvian Andes Mountains helping to restore a church building, assisting teachers, and improving his Spanish skills. Instead of running around looking for Pokémon, he was running around with village boys and girls playing what the rest of the world calls football: soccer.

Rezendes, an altarserver at his home parish of St. Pius X in South Yarmouth, was part of a group of 18 young men and three adult chaperones sponsored by Youth Service International, Inc., whose activities are entrusted to the Opus Dei community.

For nearly a month, the group lived and ate simply and worked and played hard.

“A friend of mine from northern Massachusetts went on the trip before and he highly

recommended it to me,” Rezendes told The Anchor.

“I was definitely interested and my mom and

“Thomas worked hard to make this happen,” Tom Rezendes, Thomas’ father told The Anchor.

“He raised all the funds, and gave up a month of his summer for something that wasn’t a pleasure trip.”

The Pokémon craze has as one of its purposes, to get young people out and about, instead of being planted in front of a TV or laptop screen.

Rezendes’ Peruvian venture did that and more.

Preparing to pray

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called upon all members of the Church to engage in a “Day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities” on September 9. They chose this day because it is the feast day of St. Peter Claver. This saint was a Jesuit missionary from Spain to Cartagena, Colombia during the colonial period, when thousands of slaves were brought through that port, with no respect for their lives or dignity. St. Peter Claver did what he could to help them feel that dignity again, as he performed the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy for them.

Many Catholic African-Americans have a devotion to St. Peter Claver.

The Josephite religious order, one of whose charisms is to work with African-American communities, helped to found the Knights of St. Peter Claver in the early 20th century. A few decades later the Ladies of St. Peter Claver came into existence. The Knights’ website says that “our purpose is to render service to God and His Holy Church, render aid and assistance to the sick and disabled, and promote social and intellectual association among our members.”

The press release from the USCCB says that the day of prayer was decreed, “In light of recent incidents of violence and racial tension in communities across the United States.”

The president of the USCCB, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., in July spoke of the “need to look toward additional ways of nurturing an open, honest and civil dialogue on issues of race relations, restorative justice, mental health, economic opportunity, and addressing the question of pervasive gun violence. The day of prayer and special task force [to promote peace and unity] will help us advance in that direction. By stepping forward to embrace the suffering, through unified, concrete action animated by the love of Christ, we hope to nurture peace and build bridges of communication and mutual aid in our own communities.”

Regarding the task force, the press release noted: “The purpose of the task force is to help bishops engage the challenging problems directly, by various means: gathering and disseminating supportive resources and ‘best practices’; actively listening to the concerns of members in troubled communities and law enforcement; and building strong relationships to help prevent and resolve conflicts.”

What the task force is doing for bishops is also a good reminder for all of us Catholics — of the need to listen to the concerns of people, be they from minority communities or from the police, listening not just with our ears, but with our hearts, listening to them as Jesus would. Here again the Lord is inviting us to practice the Works of Mercy.

In the Fall River Diocese, Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., has invited us to engage in a month of praying for peace, beginning on September 9 and concluding on October 10 (Columbus Day), with the annual Peace Procession and Mass in Fall River. The bishop would like us as individuals and parishes to commit to daily praying for peace during that time period through prayers at Mass and through praying the Rosary for peace every day.

We have a few weeks until September 9, so we have time to consider as parishes and as individuals how we can observe the day of prayer on St. Peter Claver’s feast day and how we can work into our daily schedules these prayers for peace.

On May 24, 2014 Pope Francis spoke in Bethany with a group of refugees and disabled young people gathered there. He said, “I ask you to join me in praying for peace. You can do this by offering your daily efforts and struggles to God; in this way your prayer will become particularly precious and effective. I also encourage you to assist, through your generosity and sensitivity, in building a society which is respectful of the vulnerable, the sick, children and the elderly. Despite your difficulties in life, you are a sign of hope.”

St. John Paul II touched on this topic on May 10, 1984 in Bangkok: “The whole Church is committed to praying for peace, to praying for that gift of God and to doing so in the most effective way possible: by participating in Christ’s perfect offering of Himself as He intercedes for us with His Heavenly Father. In the Eucharist we are made aware of our responsibility as Christians to pray constantly, especially as a community of faith, so that we may receive Christ’s gift of peace as the family of God gathered in the presence of the Father.” His remarks go very well with Father Landry’s column in this week’s Anchor.

St. John Paul continued, “Our responsibility to pray for the gift of peace does not exempt us from the duty of taking positive, concrete action in working for peace. I speak here of the peace that comes from justice and love of neighbor and which is linked to the peace of Christ that comes from God. Our commitment to peace means resisting temptations to violence; it involves the constant mastery of the passions, respect for the dignity of others, compassion, meekness, and all those qualities which flow from a heart that is configured to the image of the heart of Christ, the Prince of Peace.”

May God help us to live out the day and month of peace in such a way that Christ’s peace truly flows like a river — the river whose source is our Baptism.

s we continue to examine throughout this Jubilee of Mercy God’s call to recognize our need for, receive, be transformed by and share the extraordinary gift of God’s merciful love, it’s key to turn to the school of the Mass.

The Mass is, in fact, the great prayer of Divine Mercy. We enter in time into Christ’s eternal mercyobtaining intercession from the Upper Room, Golgotha and the tomb. As Jesus’ Bride and Body, we offer ourselves to the eternal Father together with — as St. Faustina Kowalska taught us to pray — Jesus’ Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in expiation for our sins and the sins of the world.

The Mass, the Second Vatican Council emphatically taught, is the source and summit of the Christian life, meaning that someone living in a fully Christian way will find in the Mass the starting point from which everything in life flows and the goal toward which everything is directed.

The Mass, therefore, must be the root and fruit of the Jubilee of Mercy. It is the Church’s great mystagogy of mercy, teaching us about God’s loving forgiveness not in a dry lecture hall but through helping us to jump into the deep ocean of God’s mercy.

The ancient Christian aphorism, lex orandi lex credendi lex vivendi, reminds us that how we pray influences how we believe and how we live; the more we pray for God’s mercy, the more our faith in it will grow and the more it will become our way of life.

And that law is certainly confirmed in the school of mercy that is the Mass.

In the Memorial Acclamation, we proclaim that we’re sinners in need of a Redeemer, saying, “Save us, Savior of the world, for by Your cross and Resurrection You have set us free.”

In the Lord’s Prayer, we ponder our need to forgive in order to be open to receive God’s gift of forgiveness, saying together, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” After the Our Father, the priest asks God, “That by the help of Your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress” as we await Christ’s coming on the altar and at the end of time.

In the Lamb of God, we turn to the Eucharistic Jesus “takes away the sins of the world,” and ask, “Have mercy on us” and “grant us peace.” Then we announce that because of our sinfulness, we’re not worthy to receive Jesus, but petition: “only say the world and my soul shall be healed.”

These are prayers that every Catholic can pray devotionally through this Jubilee of Mercy in order to enter more fully into God’s mercy through the Mass.

We can also focus on the two Eucharistic Prayers of Reconciliation that priests have been encouraged to pray this holy year. Used normally during Lent, they are particularly expressive of Divine Mercy.

In EPR I, the Church addresses God: “Being rich

in mercy, You constantly offer pardon and call on sinners to trust in Your forgiveness alone. Never did You turn away from us and, even now You set before Your people a time of grace and reconciliation.”

Before consecrating the Host, the priest prays, “Indeed though we once were lost and could not approach You, You loved us with the greatest love: for Your Son handed Himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the cross,” and before consecrating the Precious Blood he adds, that Jesus, “knowing He was about to reconcile all things in Himself through His Blood to be shed on the cross,” took the chalice.

There’s also a special prayer as well for “our deceased brothers and sisters who we humbly commend to Your mercy.”

In EPR II, the Church describes Jesus as “the hand You [God] extend to sinners,” and summarizes the entire Eucharistic Prayer as a petition of mercy, saying, “When we ourselves had turned away from You on account of our sins, You brought us back to be reconciled, O Lord, so that, converted at last to You, we might love one another through Your Son, Whom for our sake You handed over to death. And now, celebrating the reconciliation Christ has brought us.”

Since the Mass is the great prayer of God’s mercy, the more and the better we pray it, the more we will become “merciful like the Father,” through communion with Jesus, “Mercy Incarnate.”

Talking to kids about porn and human sexuality

growing concern today involves the role of pornography as the next generation’s instructor in human sexuality.

For many young people, pornography has become the only guide to sexuality they have ever known. For Catholic parents, this raises the critical challenge of how best to approach these matters with their children, given that kids as young as eight or nine may already be acquiring information and viewpoints about human sexual behaviors from Internet pornography. I would like to present six practical suggestions for parents, culled from parental testimonies and insights, from other experts in the field, and from exusers of pornography.

First, steer away from “the talk” towards a more integrated approach. Having “the talk” relies on the misguided notion that parents have educational content or factual knowledge that they are dutybound to try to deposit into their children’s brains.

This approach is not only awkward and paternalistic, but can convey a sense that sexual education is a one-time, get-it-over-with ordeal. Kids require ongoing guidance and support from their parents — an

Fifth, monitor Internet usage. Check browser history, and make use of monitoring software, even though a particular child may be an angel. Keep the family computer in a shared space like the living room with the screen visible so family members can be aware of each other’s online activities.

Laptops and tablets can pose an inadvertent temptation in this respect as teens sit cuddled up on the couch with screens not visible to others.

In family life, we are called to serve as our brother’s keeper. Set limits on “screen time” for children, and maintain password/ access control over devices.

Have the neighbor’s kids deposit their electronic devices on the kitchen table during visits to diminish the temptation to slip away to a private part of the house and surf the net, perhaps with younger siblings in tow. Such practices may also serve to indirectly evangelize other families in the neighborhood regarding the serious threats from Internet porn.

Sixth, set appropriate rules regarding relationships, and be involved in the kids’ dating practices. Too often parents are

tempted to take a “handsoff ” approach to this area of their children’s lives.

When I was growing up, we knew (and eventually appreciated) my father’s rule that we couldn’t date until we were 18. Setting appropriate rules for kids serves as a sign of a parent’s love and concern for them. Whenever parents determine that dating should begin, it offers further opportunities and occasions to discuss problems and scenarios that can help teens set moral boundaries.

by God is hard work. In a culture that forcefully communicates a pornified counter-Gospel, though, it is certainly one of the most important and enduring gifts a parent can seek to provide for the happiness and well-being of their children.

The wedding industry in the United States is big business. The word “huge” comes to mind (I’ve been hearing too many political speeches). The wedding industry generates $55 billion a year. That’s approximately the annual income of the oil-rich nation of Iran.

The bad news is that an “average” wedding these days runs about $30,000 (excluding the cost of the honeymoon). The worse news is that Cape Cod is one of the most expensive places in the country to hold your “Big Day.” The average wedding on Cape Cod will set you back $54,334.

Manhattan, with an average cost of $82,299, is the most expensive venue.

If you’re looking for a bargain, head for Alaska. A wedding in Alaska comes in at only $17,361. An Iditarod theme would be unique.

On what, pray tell, is all this money spent?

One thing that will eat up half of your average wedding budget is renting a hall for the reception — more delicately referred to as “deciding on a venue.”

less likely the Marriage will endure. It’s beyond the scope of their study to speculate why this is so.

I have my own theories.

For one thing, there’s the financial stress of paying all those accrued wedding bills, sometimes on top of massive tuition loans. But most importantly, when it’s all about a showy wedding and not so much about the Marriage, there will be trouble ahead. A wedding is a day; a Marriage is a lifetime.

There was a second correlation identified in the study. The more wedding guests, the more likely the Marriage will be successful. Why? Because the newly-married couple have a large network of family and friends to help them. God knows they’ll be needing support.

Assuming he had done something special in school or Scouting, I went to investigate. This 13-year-old allegedly had shot and killed someone. Authorities wished to try him as an adult.

With a suddenly heavy heart, I continued my

6:42-43). This is more than a reminder not to judge. It is a striking image that each person alone is incapable of seeing the full picture.

When there is misunderstanding or conflict, if we let them, time and space readily allow anger and hurt to diffuse. Mark Nepo says, “Perhaps the most difficult challenge of being wounded is not turning our deepest loving nature over to the life and way of the wound.” Before moving forward, one must reflect and pray. One must examine the situation with God’s eyes of love. Next, one is called to meet with one’s brother so that each of the two can assist the other in living God’s plan (not theirs). That is what is happening in Jesus’ image of each person removing the splinter from the eye of the other. The critical part of Jesus’ message is the responsibility one has to see things rightly before choosing to act.

We can take a lesson from the animal kingdom here. One can cross-foster mice from one mother to another. One gently rubs the hours-old baby mice together with their new brothers and sisters along with a small amount of bedding. All the baby mice are put into a new cage along with the mother mouse and a new nesting pad. The mother mouse will gently pick up each baby and bring him/her to the new nest.

A couple of weeks later it is obvious by sight (color of fur) which mice were adopted. Yet, the mother mouse chooses to con-

tinue to see all the babies as her own. Her vision extends past minor differences. If we truly wish to live in a world that respects the distinctive viewpoint of each person, we, as individuals, must not only learn to look past minor differences and/or disagreements, but we must work diligently to share that wisdom with others.

Returning home from my walk, I turned the page on my calendar. The quote for the day was from Franciscan Sister Thea Bowman who worked as an educator at the elementary, secondary, and college level.

Quite simply she worked to promote communication which served to end things that drove people apart. Sister Thea said, “Maybe I’m not making big changes in the world, but if I have somehow helped or encouraged somebody along the journey, then I’ve done what I am called to do.” Our world needs more courageous people willing to assist others on the journey home to God. The positive role models and the different world vision required by an individual in crisis need to have been set in motion a long time before the challenge.

Only then can someone exert the self-discipline to turn away from that worldly vision and choose not to pick up the available weapon. Will you join me in trying to continue Sister Thea’s work?

e live in a Sacred place here on the South Coast of Massachusetts. Water defines us, employs and blesses us with its abundance. Ethnic cultures make a sacramental out of the oceans as they “take the cure” on the feast of the Assumption, incarnating the innate Sacredness of the element. The 19th-century philosopher Ludwig von Feuerbach once marveled at the Sacredness of water: “Water is the purest, clearest of liquids; in virtue of this its natural character it is the image of the spotless nature of the Divine Spirit. In short, water has a significance in itself, as water; it is on account of its natural quality that it is consecrated and selected as the vehicle of the Holy Spirit. So far there lies at the foundation of Baptism a beautiful, profound natural significance.” The Sacrament doesn’t make the water Sacred, but acknowledges the innate power of its mundane sanctity.

It was no accident that the water used by John the Baptist became the vehicle of grace that Jesus handed onto His Church.

The arid lands of ancient Israel demanded respect for the element.

Misuse of water has a disastrous impact on society. We need only look a few miles to our west to see the effect of the mismanagement of water. The water shortage in the west has been called a slow-burning catastrophe that has been simmering for two decades.

Even a deluge of rain cannot bring resolution to the drought that has dried up the Colorado River, caused wild fires, threatened geese, ducks, trees, and flora. The drought in the west is the perfect metaphor for what the Church is going through today as the number of children brought to the baptismal font continues to dry up. Children slide through the waters of Baptism as if at a sacred water park, through the font and out the door.

They leave all filled with grace as the Church stands by helpless and confused.

Baptism is not an initiation into a club, but a birth into a family.

Parishes are not just a collection of families, but one family with many Spiritual needs, not all of which are met with Faith Formation programs. The youth that go home to empty homes in dangerous neighborhoods need something from the parish to fill the void before gangs get to them. Working mothers that can barely afford adequate day care need a place for their children. The hungry need food, the elderly need companionship, the immigrant needs accompaniment, and on and on it goes.

The Spiritual and the physical are not in competition but feed into one another as tributaries of grace.

The Church can stanch the flow of souls that have been in a steady exodus for the past several decades.

We have been coaxing families into being better at raising their children in the faith, better at managing their time, better at being parents, but they will be better served if we focus on the real world in which they experience grace and pain.

We can learn from the inadequacy of the leadership out west in their approach to the drought. They cajole the people into taking shorter showers, shame them for wash-

Cardinal O’ Malley to celebrate annual Red Mass in diocese

FALL RIVER — Boston Archbishop Cardinal Séan P. O’Malley, OFM Cap., will return to the Fall River Diocese to serve as principal celebrant and homilist for the 20th annual Red Mass at 4 p.m., September 24, in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Fall River.

It was Cardinal O’Malley who, while serving as bishop of Fall River in 1997, instituted the Red Mass in the diocese and celebrated the inaugural one with the hope that it would become an annual tradition.

FALL RIVER— The Anchor is currently working hand-in-hand with all 22 of the Diocese of Fall River Catholic schools, from elementary to high school and from all five deaneries, to create a Back to School supplement paper to be published in a few weeks.

The free newspaper will be filled with pertinent written information and photos provided by faculty and staff from each of the Catholic schools.

The publication will be made available to all 22 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Fall River, and additional copies will be made available to parishes associated with a school.

The entire Back to School supplement is focused on Catholic schools and what each school has to offer its current and prospective students.

“For our diocese’s Catholic schools, I consider the upcoming Back to School

invoke God’s guidance and strength on those working in the areas of law and justice. Its origins go back to 13th-century Europe; its name is derived from the color of the vestments customarily worn by the celebrants. Today, the Mass is widely celebrated in dioceses throughout the U.S. and beyond.

“Knowing that this is the 20th Red Mass observance, the committee agreed it was the opportune moment to bring back the bishop who started it,” he said.

“The Red Mass has become an important tradition. It’s a much needed opportunity for judges, lawyers, court workers — all of us — to gather off the

bench, out of court, out of our offices, to think about the bigger picture, about what we do and its impact. I think that is why my Uncle Joe [late New Bedford Attorney Joseph Harrington], who was the Red Mass chairman for so many of its years until his death, and now I remain so committed to it. And gratefully, with the strong support of first Bishop O’Malley, then Bishop Coleman, and now Bishop da Cunha, the Red Mass has continued each year,” he shared.

About 1.9 million students are currently educated in nearly 6,600 Catholic schools around the country.

Students receive an education that prepares them for higher education, a competitive work environment, but most importantly, living a Christian life of virtue in a challenging society. “We want our students to keep their eyes fixed on eternity which is the ultimate goal of a complete education,” said Archbishop George J. Lucas of Omaha, Neb., chairman of the U.S. Con-

ference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education.

“Catholic schools are a vital aspect of the Church’s mission to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and so an important aspect of our own teaching mission,” said the archbishop. He noted that Pope Francis reminded Catholic educators at the World Congress held last year in Rome to know the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy and to offer them to students in Catholic schools as practical examples of how to live the Gospel.

“By teaching the Good News of the Gospel, Catholic educators guide our students to Jesus Christ and His healing mercy,” Archbishop Lucas said.

do not know if anyone else has been addicted to the Olympics this year but I totally have been watching endlessly. As you know, I love sports so this is obviously something I would be drawn too. I cannot help but watch as records are broken. Some are official Olympic records like Katie Ledecky blowing away the competition in the women’s 800 freestyle, or Virginia Thrasher breaking the record in the women’s 10m shooting event, or Joseph Schooling, a fan of Michael Phelps, breaking Michael Phelps’ record in the men’s 100m butterfly.

These are all huge feats on their own.

What I love a little more are the non- “official Olympic records” that have happened. Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win a medal in Olympic competition.

Michael Phelps, arguably the best swimmer of all times, breaks a more than 2,000-year-old record to become the first per-

son to win 13 individual gold medals (on top of so many other records he broke). Anthony Ervin, after taking some years off, becomes the oldest man to win gold in an individual swimming competition.

Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive, became the first man to win gold in the 100m three times. And my favorite Olympian, Kerry Walsh-Jennings, is currently attempting to be the first person to win four gold medals in volleyball (when this is printed you will already know if she has succeeded).

What I love even more than the unique records to be broken are the stories behind the Olympians. There are so many great athletes whose greatness does not only exist on the court/ floor/pool/field/track.

Oddly enough though, the thing that has stood out to me the most this Olympics has been a commercial. While most of what I watch has been DVR’d, there have been a few competitions that I have watched live. Chobani yogurt has been one of the sponsors of the Olympics. In their commercials they state, “You can’t be great if you are not full of goodness.” Now I know the original meaning for this commercial is that their yogurt is full of good ingredients but wow, there is so much more truth in that statement.

To be the best version of yourself, to overcome these seemingly insurmountable obstacles, to be the person God created us to be, we must be full of goodness! In other words, we need to be full of Godliness. Some of the great Olympians first had to be full of goodness to become great. Simone Manuel summed it up best after her recordbreaking swim, “All glory to God.” To strive for gold in all aspects of our life first starts with being full of goodness!

For and About Our Church Youth Pilgrims experience ‘awesome’ World Youth Day in Poland

HYANNIS — As a four-time veteran of World Youth Day, Father Ron P. Floyd could be considered something of an expert in the pilgrimage that was initiated by St. John Paul II in 1985.

But the latest week-long experience — held from July 26-31 in Krakow, Poland — was particularly gratifying.

“I might be biased, because I’m Polish, but I think this was the best one yet,” Father Floyd recently told The Anchor. “The kids had an awesome time.”

Having previously attended WYD in Cologne, Germany in 2005; Sydney, Australia in 2008; and Madrid, Spain in 2011, Father Floyd recently ventured to his ancestral home with a group of young faithful from throughout the diocese along with Father Jack Schrader, parochial vicar at St. Mary’s Parish in Mansfield, and seminarian Matt Gill of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Attleboro.

“We invited all the seminarians this year, but with their busy schedules, (Matt) was the only one who was able to commit,” Father Floyd said. “He re-

ally added an element of joy to our group. And Father Schrader went with me last time to Madrid while he was still a seminarian, so to now see him there as a priest was a nice thing as well.”

In addition to a closing Mass with Pope Francis, Father Floyd said highlights of the trip included visits to the shrines of St. John Paul II and St. Faustina; the cathedral of St. Stanislaus, the patron saint of Poland; and the Black Madonna Sanctuary in Częstochowa.

“I had been to the St. John Paul II Shrine before it was done, but this time it was really moving,” Father Floyd said. “There’s an exhibit off the side that displays the cassock he was wearing when he was shot in 1981 — and to see that, with his blood, a first-class relic, just sitting there — it was really moving for me.

Just remembering his great love for the youth and the fact that they all got to be there (for World Youth Day) and be at his shrine.”

— along with the benefit of not one but two translators.

“The kids all commented that they liked having their own personal translators, because Father Jack Schrader and I took turns translating the Italian and the Polish, respectively, during the Holy Father’s homily,” Father Floyd said. “I remember Father Schrader was laughing because at one point the Holy Father said we have to ‘not be a people of the couch,’ which translated means ‘couch potatoes’ in English. The pope was trying to explain how some modern conveniences tend to distract us from real living. I thought that was a beautiful notion for the kids to hear.”

The group also had two opportunities to share the pilgrimage with Cardinal Séan P. O’Malley, OFM, Cap., of Boston — once during a catechesis session he led on Wednesday evening at the Tauron Arena, and then again during Mass on Saturday morning, before they traveled to the Campus Misericordia in Brezgi.

“Bishop Robert J. McManus (of Worcester) was also a hit, although I didn’t hear what he said to the kids,” Father Floyd said.

“He did a question-and-

answer period on Friday and the kids really seemed to like that.”

Although it was sometimes very hot in Poland and the accommodations weren’t always as comfortable as they might have liked, Father Floyd said it was all part and parcel of being on a pilgrimage.

“We focused really from the beginning that there was going to be a certain amount of suffering involved,” Father Floyd said.

“In fact, one of the kids said they were sort of scared, but then they found that it wasn’t all that bad. We were walking, on average, 14 miles a day. We were housed in dorm rooms at a college, but they weren’t air-conditioned and things were a little bit tight. So I think that was a little bit of purgation for them.”

Despite these minor inconveniences, Father Floyd said everyone in the group

“gelled really well” and he was impressed with the camaraderie that developed during the week.

“I think they were all looking out for each other, and I was really happy about that,” he said. “Sometimes group dynamics can be iffy, especially when you have groups of people coming together from different places. But they all seemed to mingle and take care of each other really well.”

“We didn’t always know what we were doing, but things seemed to work out,” he added. “That’s Divine Providence and that’s part of the pilgrim experience — it’s all about not being in control and being away from your comfort zone.

You just have to put your trust in God, which is in reality what we experience every day, we just forget it.”

Excitement builds for Blessed Mother Teresa’s canonization continued from page two

simplicity,” agreed Sister Noreen. “With her, everything was possible in the presence of God. When all the sorrow and sufferings and difficulty came, she saw only joy. She had a tremendous love for all souls.”

Like her fellow Missionaries of Charity, Sister Carmel was inspired by Blessed Mother Teresa to answer God’s calling.

“It’s amazing to me how well she understood God’s call of mercy,” Sister Carmel said, noting that she’s been reading Mother Teresa’s writings and letters in anticipation of her canonization. “And she went through a lot of obstacles in the beginning, so I think it’s a blessing to have been called to become a Missionary of Charity.”

Some of those obstacles feature prominently in the recent film “The Letters: The Epic Life Story of Mother Teresa,” in which the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize recipient is portrayed by British actress Juliet Stevenson.

“That movie is based, in part, on a book written by Mother’s Spiritual director and I will tell you it was taken a bit out of context,” said Deacon Rick Varieur of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish in South Attleboro. “It described her as sort of distant and separated from God, but we know that in our tradition as the sort of dark night of the soul.

It’s a gift God gives to those people who are very close to Him. But Mother Teresa persevered through all of that. It was really quite amazing and I think it enhances her sainthood immensely.”

A good friend of Deacon Varieur, Hugo Rossi,

worked for Blessed Mother Teresa for eight years during the 1970s and was her driver whenever she came to visit the U.S. during that period. Rossi will be bringing a first-class relic — a vial of her blood drawn shortly before her death — to the South Attleboro parish on September 18 for veneration.

He’ll also be sharing some of his personal anecdotes about the newly-canonized saint.

“One of the stories Hugo tells is the time she was in the South Bronx and he was driving her around,” Deacon Varieur said. “She was opening a new (house), so there was a lot of media there, and one of the reporters asked: ‘Mother, you’ve worked all over the world. Tell us, where are the poorest of the poor?’ And she told Hugo to go get the van.

So Hugo got the van and Mother jumped in with some of the reporters and they drove to Central Park West. She got out of the van and pointed to all the multi-million-dollar apartments around the park and said: ‘Here — here are the poorest of the poor.’”

Another person with close ties to Blessed Mother Teresa and the Fall River Diocese is Father William F. Petrie, SS.CC., the former provincial superior for the U.S. east province of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary who served in Fairhaven and is now pastor of St. Damien Parish on the Island of Molokai in Hawaii.

Father Petrie first met Blessed Mother Teresa in 1973 and eventually became her close friend and Spiritual advisor for

22 years before her death on Sept. 5, 1997.

He will be attending the canonization at the Vatican on September 4.

“Mother’s presence was a powerful, grace-filled radiant peace that seemed to empower and impact others,” Father Petrie said in a 2008 Anchor interview. “She was such in union with Christ that she radiated.

She once said you can’t go to the poor unless you smile and you radiate joy. That’s what made her a powerful, faith-filled person.”

Father Petrie noted how their mutual admiration for St. Damien of Molokai helped to cement their bond.

“Mother Teresa was delighted to know that I was a member of the same religious congregation as Father Damien,” Father Petrie said. “He was her inspiration for starting the Hansen’s disease work for the Missionaries of Charity. Even back then she was asking: ‘When is he going to be canonized?’”

Ironically enough, Father Petrie has since seen Father Damien canonized and he will now witness the canonization of his longtime friend, Blessed Mother Teresa.

“During the course of her life, thousands of people have been touched and uplifted by her charism — that charism was her love of God and neighbor,” Father Petrie said. “Mother Teresa never sought volunteers to assist her, on the contrary she advised people to work with the poor and needy where they live. ‘If you have eyes to see, Calcutta is everywhere,’ she once said.”

While much has been said and written about the

“simplicity” and “humility” of the Church’s newest saint, Father Petrie sees it another way.

“I once told Mother Teresa: ‘I know the secret of your success. I said it is your powerlessness,’” Father Petrie said. “She asked me what does that mean? I told her, think of Mary standing on Calvary.

There was nothing she could do, there’s nothing recorded in Scripture.

She was just present as her Son was suffering this great redemptive act and no one shared more

in that mystery than the person of Mary.

“I told her when there’s a famine, an earthquake, a war, or masses of poor children you just go and stand there and something happens. She said: ‘That’s how it works.’”

A special Mass in honor of Blessed Mother Teresa will be celebrated on the day of her canonization — Sunday, September 4 at 11 a.m.

worked on a church building that was very much in disrepair.”

Pictures of the church before the renovation revealed cracked walls with plaster falling off, dire need of a paint job, altars in the same condition, a roof with a plethora of missing boards, and dirt and plaster everywhere.

“We spent each morning and three hours each afternoon plastering, painting and doing general repairs,” Rezendes continued. “And with the money we raised, we were able to have the roof fixed.

“The day we finished, the priest who was traveling with us, Father Diego, from the D.C. area, celebrated Mass in the church, and many, many people who didn’t usually attend, came and were very pleased with the outcome.”

In the “after” pictures, the walls were patched and painted, as were the altars and shrines. Colors abound in the renovated house of worship, which is now clean and bright.

“I’ve heard that in

other areas as well, when a church building is renovated, people start coming back, because it’s safe and clean.”

When the group isn’t there, the area has one priest who travels from village to village celebrating Mass and administering the Sacraments. “This church will probably have Mass there once a month or so,” said Rezendes. The group had daily Mass since they had the benefit of a “resident” priest with them.

This particular region wasn’t impoverished; the people there had simple food and homes with electricity and running water; and a few had televisions.

Life for the villagers there was simple and basic.

The weekends for the U.S. group consisted of visiting area shops, hiking in the mountains, and playing soccer with the local kids.

“I was amazed at the people there,” Rezendes commented. “They have such basic necessities and possessions, and they live in tight quarters, but they

are so happy. These people are grateful for what they do have, and they take it and value it.

“And the children are always running around and they always have smiles on their faces. I’m grateful for having seen this because I’ll remember their simple way of life and the fact that they still lead very happy lives.”

Rezendes made two phone calls home during his three-week stay. “My parents were concerned about me there,” Rezendes said. “So it was nice to speak to them a couple of times.”

“My wife and I definitely missed him while he was away,” dad Tom said. “The house was quiet.”

One of the goals Rezendes had before heading to South America — teaching local children English and sharing the Catholic faith — didn’t really come to fruition.

“We had a full slate of work at the church, but we did get to help the teachers out a bit, and as far as teaching the faith, the kids watched a great deal of the work we were doing on the church, so we were setting a good example,” Rezendes told The Anchor.

“And I did improve my Spanish skills a bit, but only here and there.”

The return trip home was no less taxing than the way there. There was

still an hours-long drive to Lima, followed by three flights back to Cape Cod. “It took me a few days to get back to normal when I came home,” he added, “but it wasn’t too bad. This whole trip was a great chance to escape from the world we live in around here, and to realize what you do have. Living a simple life is not bad at all. I would do it again.

“And, I got to spend

some quality time with God.” Thomas’ father added, “Thomas came back more mature,” as a result of his experiences in Peru. “We are proud of him for making this sacrifice.”

Rezendes told The Anchor that when he returns to school in a few weeks, the students in his theology class will have to give reports on their summer service projects. It’s a good assumption that Thomas Rezendes will have quite the tale to tell.

He may not have experienced great conquests at a Pokémon gym site, but he served a small part of God’s large family nearly two miles above sea level, 3,800 miles from his home in Yarmouth.

St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. I shared anecdotes of previous trips to the land of the Maple Leaf, and can now report on one more week in the great north.

We arrived in Canada on New Brunswick Day, when mostly everything was closed.

We managed to find a restaurant to grab some dinner.

It was a small seafood diner that was slammed with people.

Evidently the owners weren’t expecting such a crowd and had only two young people on duty. They did yeoman’s work, yet many patrons didn’t agree and let them know. I suspect they were Americans.

On the way out I told the two young people I thought they did a great job, and tipped them accordingly. The young man said, “That means a lot.

Thank you.”

I must say that compared with my other excursions to Canada, this trip went fairly smoothly — just a few quirks .

We arrived at our home for the following four days in Halifax, on the 10th floor of a beautiful, old 12-story hotel, right on the wharf.

I used the huge luggage dolly to bring up our bags, and Danny and I promised to return it to the lobby.

We also had dinner at a Japanese sushi bar for some sashimi and other eats. There was no parking around, so Danny and I dropped the women off and went to search for a parking spot. After several orbits of the block I saw one,

construction site across the street. Very cool, except for the woman who was on her way in and let out a scream when the TNT blew. We all had a good laugh.

Canada is a land of washrooms, not bathrooms; meters, not miles; and liters, not ounces. But we adapted.

There were no catastrophes as in prior trips. I even fared better at customs. We chatted with the customs agent and figured there would be no problems — until he said, “I have to ask you a question.” The four of us thought the worst, and he said, “Why are you wearing that shirt?”

I had a Boston Bruins Tshirt on. “I’m from Massachusetts,” was the obvious reply.

He said, “I’m a Buffalo Sabres

fan,” a team that has never won a Stanley Cup. I looked down and sadly said, “Some day.”

He got a great charge out of that and waved us back into the U.S. Phew!

I’m back in the office after a 15-hour day returning from Halifax. We were in the U.S. not two minutes when we were greeted with massive Maine mountain thunderstorms for the next 90 miles.

That and everything north of Bangor is off the electronic grid. There was no cell phone service, people, or gas stations.

Just deer, birds, thunder, lightning, and asphalt.

I half expected to report on more Canadian calamities, but the vacation was fun, relaxing and much-needed. I already miss being asked, “Hoooos it goin’, eh?” davejolivet@anchornews.org.
