89 from diocese to attend Youth Day in Paris Under tbe direction ofFatber David Costa, 18 parishes and schools from allover tbe Fall River diocese will be represented in Paris, France, for tbis year's WorldYoutb Day festival. Instituted in 1985 following tbe spontaneous gatherings of youtb in Rome on the occasion of tbe U.N. International Year for Youth, World Youtb Days are celebrated each year in every diocese of the world. Every two years, moreover, tbe Pope calls the youth of tJle world to meet during an international gatJlering. The purpose ofWorld Youth Day is threefold: putting trust in tbe young; gatbering togetber; and meeting tbe international world on a human level. This year's theme is "Master, where are you staying?...Come and See" (In 1:38-39). The gatherings and activities over the weeklong festival are designed to remind young people of tbe importance of the spiritual part of life in today's society. The Fall River delegation will make the nine day pilgrimage not only to attend tbe many activities associated with the celebration, but also to take in the sights of Paris. "It's important to lind Christ in everything," said Father Costa, explaining that the museums and other sight" offer much inspiration too. Pilgrims will begi.n lrrriving on Aug. 18 and an opening Mass. will be celebrated the following day with Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris. The group will have Mass on Aug. 23 witb a familiar celebrant, since Bishop Sean O'Malley will also bl~ in Paris for tbe youtb convention as well as for tbe Aug. 22 beatification of Frederic Oz.anam, founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Bishops from all over tbe world will also be in town for the festival, offering daily teachings to youth separated into language groups. Each catechesis will be followed by aMass. The afternoons of Aug. 20 and 21 will be devoted to the youth festival, which includes shows, concerts and expositions showcasing the cultural and spiritual aspects of France. A Way of the Cross will be held Aug. 22. Aug. 23 will bring a walking pilgrimage to the site of an evening prayer vigil in tbe presence of tbe Holy Fatber and on Sunday morning Pope John Paul II will celebrate a sendoff Mass followed by the Angelus. The group is due back on Aug. 26. Sending groups from the diocese are Notre Dame, St. Antbony of Padua, St. William, Sacred Heart, and Holy Name parishes, tbe Office ofYoutb Ministry Services and Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River; St. John Neumlmn parish, East Freetown; St. John tbe Baptist lUld St. James parishes of New Bedford; Our Lady of Mt. ClUmel parish, Seekonk; St. John of God, St. Thomas More and St. ?atrick parishes of Somerset; St. Mark parish, North Attleboro; St. Pius X parish, South Yarmoutb; St. Francis Xavier parish, AcuSl'fnet; and St. Joseph parish, Nortb Dighton. A send-off Mass for the Fall River delegation to World YOlllth Day will be held at Notre Dame parish in Fall River on August 17 at 3 p.m.
