Southeastern Massachusetts' Largest Weekly • $14 Per Year
Catholic Charities Appeal sets a record ,with $3.946M total FALL RIVER - Calling the 63 rd annual Catholic Charities Appeal a "resounding success," Fall River diocesan leaders reported a final total of $3,946,996.99 reflecting not only an all-time high, but a $272,152 or 7.4 percent increase over the record set in 2003. It is the second largest dollar increase in the Appeal's history. Appeal officials said it was a success not only for the diocese but also for "the needy it tirelessly ministers to, thanks to the 99 pastors and parish communities that worked so diligently, and the record number of parishioners and friends who so unselfishly contributed." Bishop George W. Coleman, in a June 28 letter to "the faithful" of the Fall River diocese, thanked them for their generosity. "I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped to make this year's Catholic Charities Appeal such a great success," Bishop Coleman wrote. "The generous response to the Appeal this year continues the tradition of charity and care for the poor that we celebrate during this Centennial Year of the Diocese." He added, "The extraordinary increase in the amount raised this year shows that you take seriously the obligation in our faith to respond to the needs of. others. Thanks to your generosity, we can be reassured that the Church will be able. to help those who tum to us in need. The efforts of those who have worked for the success of the Appeal are appreciated by alL"

Msgr. Thomas J. Harrington, director of Catholic Charities, said, "This is a truly an amazing achievement. When one considers the state of the economy and some of the unsettling developments the Church has faced in the past couple of years, it certainly shows the typical parishioner is well aware of the wonderful work the diocese does for those in need throughout southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. The tens of thousands of parishioners who have contributed have shown their great confidence in the diocese and its agencies funded through the Appeal." He added, "One could never consider attempting to help the thousands and thousands of needy men: women, and children who approach the Church during their time of need, if they were not confident that such generous support would be forthcoming. Once again, the people of our 99 parishes have shown that our confidence in them is well founded." According to Michael 1. Donly, director of Development for the diocese, "Many parishes exceeded their previous year's total and then continued to call into the central office with more and more donations. This is a true sign of unselfishness when they are doing their best to increase the total for the overall Appeal without a concern as to how good it makes their parish look. Their motives were simply to get as much money as possible' into the hands of those who are dealing with the ever-inTurn to page J0 - Appeal
