Bishop-Elect Coleman to be ordained, installed at Cathedral July 22 FALL RIVER - BishopElect George W. Coleman will be ordained the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Fall River at ceremonies July 22, at 11 a.m., in St. Mary's Cathedral.

The announcement from Bishop-Elect Coleman came after he received confirmation of the date and time froin Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

He asked all to pray for him in these weeks prior to his ordination/installation "that I may worthily receive the sacrament of Holy Orders as a bishop and fulfill its responsibilities."

announced the appointment of Bishop-Elect Coleman as the new bishop of the diocese that encompasses southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands.

Four celebrate their golden jubilees and two others observe their silver.

FALL RIVER - A chorbishop in the Maronite Rite and five priests of the Fall River diocese are celebrating anniversaries of ordination to the priesthood this year.

Ordained in 1953 and marking 50th anniversaries as priests are Chor-Bishop Norman J. Ferris, Msgr. John J. Regan, Msgr. Henry T. Munroe and Father Jose A.F. dos Santos. Ordained in 1978 and celebrating 25'h anniversaries are Father Jon-Paul Gallant and Father Bernard Vanasse.

Golden Jubilarians Chor-Bishop Ferris, 75, is a native of Fall River. After local schooling he entered

the sert1inary and graduated from St. Charles College High School and St. Charles College in Catonsville, Md., and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md. He was ordained a priest for the Fall River diocese on May 23, 1953 in St.· Mary's Cathedral here by Bishop James L.Connolly. He was the first member of St. Anthony of the Desert Parish to enter the priesthood.

He served as a parochial vicar at St. Mary's in Taunton for 17 years and then as parochial vicar at St. Margaret's in Buzzards Bay and at the Mission of St. Mary's in Onset. .

Catholic Charities Appeal: Its work seen bearing fruit NORTH DARTMOUTH - A substantial contribution to the ongoing Catholic Charities Appeal in the Fall River diocese by the Confirmation Retreat Team of students at UMass-Dartmouth, has inspired campaign officials.

The Campus Ministry at the

university is one of the many agencies and apostolates of the diocese which depend on the annual spring season campaign for needed operating funds.

"It's very gratifying when those who are beneficiaries of the services of the apostolates which

count on the Appeal are themselves motivated to contribute to the cause," said Msgr. Thomas J. Harrington, director of the Appeal.

elementary schools in Massachusetts and New York. In Massachusetts, she taught at St. Anne School, Fall River (1928-47, 1948-49, 1954-61, and 1972-74), and at St. Francis Xavier School, Acushnet (1947-48, 1949-54, and 1961-68). In New York she taught at St. Peter's School in Plattsburgh.

In later years Sister Mary Andrew performed volunteer service at the motherhouse in Fall River.

In May, 2002, she moved to Siena Hall at the Dominican Sisters Center of Hope in Newburgh, N.¥.· .

Besides her community; she is survived by nieces and nephews, and she is predeceased by three sisters and five brothers.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated June 2 at the Dominican Sisters of Hope Convent Chapel in Newburgh. Burial was at the Dominican Sisters Cemetery there.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Father Stephen B. Salvador, who has served as a Scout chaplain for 25 years at various state, regional and national events, was awarded the prestigious Silver Saint George Award at the recent Biennial Conference of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting convened here.

Father Salvador, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Parish at Holy Cross Church in Fall River, was among six Catholic Scouters singled out for honors.

The Fall River pastor was recognized for his significant contribution to Scouting in the Catholic Church.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Father Marc Bergeron, director of the Office of Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs for the Diocese of Fall River and pastor of St. Anne's Parish in Fall River, was among 300 delegates at the recent National Workshop for Christian Unity here.

"We Hold These Truths in Clay Jars" was the theme of the 40th annual national gathering of leaders of Christian communities, which celebrates 'the successes of and challenges remaining in the ecumenical movement, Father Bergeron reported.

Seminars during the five-day 'meeting addressed topics ranging from African-American churches and ecumenism to interfaith families to the status ofcurrent ecumenical dialogues.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine (Hebert) Leger.

Sister Mary Andrew entered the Dominican Sisters of Fall River in August 1928. She made first profession of vows in August of 1930 and her final profession in August of 1934. She celebrated her 75 th anniversary as a Dominican Sister on April 22 of this year.

, Chi~dren of the light !.-iving in a crass secular society, it is easy to lose one's way in 'times of spiritual struggles. The atmosphere that surrounds our Church is harsh and hurtful. Each day the media casts its doubts and fears with reckless abandon. The Church is under a constant barrage of negative and subjeCtive reporting. Articles and editorialsare full of insinuation and often diminish the truth. A marked anti-Catholicism has received media approval. Such a purposeful program of attack has been hurtful and harmful. The world of secular print in many areas of the country is attempting,to destroy the Catholic Church, By separating faith from reason, the means from the end, there is a distinct effort to eradicate the unity of faith and' all that it implies in our daily search for meaning and relevance.

Professor Philip Jenkins of Pennsylvania State University has recently published his book entitled "The New Anti-Catholicism."

He quite openly states that today's attacks against Catholics would not be tolerated against Muslims and Jews. The Church is the whipping boy of many who consider themselves libe~al intellectuals.

The sexual abuse scandals have given them the impetus to create a continuous anti-Catholic barrage. Jenkins reflected "sexual abuses in the Catholic Church are no more frequent than in other churches."

The abuses, he rightly states, "are hor-reridous and must be eradicated, but they also must not be manipulated." He also feels that "this current wave of anti-Catholicism is anti-papal." There is a determined effort to separate the Church in America from Rome.

This reflection indeed can be found in the reporting of many daily newspapers.

The lessons of history tell us the Church in every age has its own set of problems. Certainly this is readily conceded in today's difficulties. Yet. the Church by its very nature IS called to trans-, form every environment. It is easy to 'say that the challenges are too heavy a burden to carry, given our social milieu. This is really a cop-out. The people of every age and time feel that their place in' history is uniquely special. That is purely a subjective viewpoint.

Objectively speaking, humanity faces challenges In every age. They might come wearing different hats, but they are essentially the same.

To honestly face the Church challenges at hand, we need honest and caring leadership. Today, trends show that people do not respect authority; they question it. They, are skeptical and they are cynical towards it. All this has'become quite evident in the midst of recent and ongoing Church controversies. In some ways Catholics have themselves become paralyzed by fear. As we take up th,~ work at hand we should begin once more the work of reform to get ourselves out oJ our defensive posture. Our educational institutions, our seminaries and houses of religious studies are where this work of hope faces its greatest challenge. We need courageous leaders who are willing to move beyond fear. The challenge for all in the Church is to once more courageously renew the face of the' earth. Le.t us reflect that courage is not the absence of fear, but.the motivating intention to move beyond fear. This is not an easy task, but necessary one. Authentic leadership is one based on prayerful courage, . ' "', There is no doubt that this dark night of the soul will pass. ,During a mission given by a Jesuit priest in our parish, I noticed he always 'finished with, a spiritual exercise. He never let us rest after his talks, but rather prodded us to discuss and reorder his thoughts among- ourselves in order to make them meaningful to our personal lives. As I went through these exercises, it dawned on me that we were practicing a high form of asceticism.

"Asceticism" in Greek means practice and exercise - exercise in the proper directing of one's life. As discomforting as asceti-. cism sounds, its main purpose is to bring our lives into better order, ,making them healthier and , more enjoyable. , The order asceticism creates is especially beneficial to our health, the' way we relate to others; and our spiritual life.

Most of us would agree that we .are forever in need of more sleep.

We know from experience that a good night's sleep gives us more' zest and a better outlook. We also know that the worst opponents of a good sleep are staying up late

To season: Add lots of sugar There are two overused expressions in the English language I could just a soon live without: I.) Everything happens for a reason; and 2.) When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. (I particularly dislike No.2) But I must admit, there are times when both expressions do come in handy - and this is one of those times.

Believe it or not summer begins in two weeks. TWO WEEKS. Aren't we supposed to have a spring before a summer? Hasn't that been the meteorological protocol in this region for the last zillion years? When the summer equinox hits, shouldn't we all be on our second or third tank of propane for the gri II? No matter how you slice it, we in. southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands have not had a spring. And there will be a trickle effect from this cold, wet, wet, wet pre-summer period. Consequently, in order not to have as bad a summer as we've had a spring, we must make lemonade. (And based on the current nighttime temperatures, we won't have to add ice.)

Our summer sports lifestyles will be altered but not ruined.

Hunters. it'll be time to oil and clean that old shotgun hanging over the hearth a little sooner this year ... like in July and August. No, waterfowl will still be out of season, but you'll find a greater challenge in the

shorelines, this could be the summer when fellow sunbathers wo·n't snicker as you scamper like a puppet on a string trying to get from your blanket to the ocean.

Golfers, remember all those times you said the courses around here weren't challenging enough? Forget about it this year. Because of our monsoonal "spring," the trees and bushes have twice the vegetation . as normal, and that translates into fairways with half the acreage at which to shoot. Not to mention water hazards the size of Qilabbin Reservoir.

Boaters, don't fret about hurricane season roiling uP. the seas this year. Hurricanes thrive on warm, tepid waters. That.

coming weeks. Because the "spring" has been so soggy, by mid-summer the mosquitoes will be the size of mallards and there's no· off-season for skeeters, and no limit.

It was surprising to see The Anchor editorial of May 23 in support of New Bedford's political campaign for steamship service to the Islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

The Steamship Authority was created by the Legislature to serve the Islands' needs, not to relieve unemployment in New Bedford or to solve the traffic congestion on Cape Cod. We welcome the workers from New Bedford and pay them well. The few cars carried by the steamships will not . relieve the Cape's traffic problem. The fast ferry service contemplates only passenger traffic and will be subject to wind and weather.

YOur arguments about social, environmental and control issues ignore the basic fact that the Steamship Authority is a ne-

cessity for the Islands: it is our lifeline. The Authority must provide the Islands with yearround ferry service and make the operation succeed to avoid deficit payments on the Islands.

It is already expensive to live here. Many boat operators would love a share of the summer business, but none would enjoy the winter months when the Authority must operate. That is the reason the Authority was given the right to control competition, to protect its successful operation, an operation that has thus far run the· only public transportation system in the state to operate without a deficit. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

The Anchor would do well to avoid this political thicket, unless there is a matter offaith and morals involved.

WASHINGTON - The Diocese of Manchester, N.H., has settled the claims of 61 alleged victims of clergy sexual abuse for $6.5 million.

The settlement, announced recently, will be paid over a threeyear period beginning this December. Funding will come from a combination of insurance coverage and future reserves from the diocesan insurance fund.

In a news release the diocese said this approach "is acceptable to the complainants and also allows for the stabilization of the financial condition of the diocese," which has already made sharp budget and personnel cutbacks.

Under the settlement, individual plaintiffs will receive from $20,000 to $450,000, depending

on the severity of the abuse.

With the recent settlements, said diocesan spokesman Patrick McGee, the diocese has settled a

total of 176 claims for $15.45 million over the past year. McGee said there are still "a dozen or fewer" unresolved claims.

Knights of Columbus dedicate marker BOURNE - Following more than four years of research and approval from the Department of Defense, the Massachusetts State Council of the Knights ofColumbus recently dedicated a stone marker on it's Memorial Trail at the National Veteran's Cemetery.

The stone was placed in memory of all Knights of Columbus members who have served their nation in times of war and peace over the years and for the many works accomplished.

"Adaptation" (2002) Oddball tale of a self-Ioathing screenwliter (Nicolas Cage) whose frustrations adapting a book about an orchid smuggler and a reporter (Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep) increase when his shallow twin brother (also Cage) easily sells his cheesy tirst screenplay. Written hy Charlie Kaufman and directed by Spike Jonze, it's a wackily creative mix of serious ponderings and quirky satirical humor offset by Cage's whiny character, but the final halfhour goes into lethal overdrive.

Brief but intense violence, recreational drug use, a sexual encounter, fleeting nudity and glimpses of a pornographic Website, much rough language and some profanity. Director Harold Ramis substitutes vulgarity for witty humor in this often flat, always meanspirited comedy. Comic treatment of crime and promiscuity, intermittent stylized violence" crude sexua'l references, some profanity and continuous rough language. (Warner Home Vid.eo) "Equilibrium" (2002) Derivative sci-fi tale set in a dictatorial future where anyone showing human emotion is summarily executed, but the leading law enforcer (Christian Bale) who is charged with infiltrating the underground resistance movement begins to come around to their way of thinking. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer copies elements of numerous better movies in the genre and pumps up the action but Bale's cold, empty performance dooms interest in the film. Director Stuart Baird sticks to the tried-andtrue formulas of the Star Trek franchise to deliver a film that goes where every "Star Trek" fan has gone before, but hardly explores any new frontiers.

CYO hoops banquet hosts largest crowd in its history

.FALL RIVER - Five hundred people, including basketball players, parents, coaches, referees and guests attended the annual Fall River CYO Banquet this year at McGovern's Restaurant marking the largest crowd in its 17-year history.

"This is unbelievable," said Father Jay T. Maddock, diocesan Director of the CYO. "This is by far our biggest turnout and it shows that parents are supportive of what we do."

The evening included a buffet dinner, guest speaker Head Coach Bobby Gonzales from Manhattan College in New York and a host of awards for championship teams, team MVP's and sportsmanship.

"It's a great evening for everyone," said Father Maddock. "We're thrilled and privileged to have Coach Gonzales here with us tonight. He's a wonderful guest speaker for our young people because he believes in the CYO basketball program and appreciates what it did for him. He's an example of what can happen if you dedicated yourself to the talents God has given you."

Parents sat at banquet tables with their children and one could see that everyone was indeed enjoying the evening. Judy BaiTOSO from Our Lady of Grace Parish, Westport, was one of those parents and said her 12-year-old daughter Alexandra loves being in the CYO program.

"Alexandra's been in the league three years now," said Barroso, "and enjoys the challenge and competition she finds in the CYO basketball program."

Bill Slean of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish, Fall River, agreed that children benefit from being involved in the CYO programs.

"My daughter went through the program and now my son pmticipates," said Slean. "It's great for them to learn to playas a team and with the winning and losing it's a youthful way to expclience the ups and downs of life."

Kyle Novo of Espirito Santo Parish, Fall River, said he was enjoyed the banquet, but was "looking forward to playing again next yea..." Both his friends Nicholas Gouveia and Jordan Silva nodded in agreement and it was plain to see that participants in the CYO program enjoy it a great deal.

Father Maddock led a prayer prior to the meal before introducing Gonzales. Father Maddock thanked all those involved in the CYO programs including Albert "Val" Vaillancourt and the supportive parents and volunteers who give of their time and talent.

Gonzales is the fOlmer assistant basketball coach at Providence College and currently serves as the head coach of the successful men's basketball team at Manhattan. His team captured the MAC championship in 2003 and an automatic

bid to the NCAA Tournament.

There the Jaspers faced the eventual winner of the tournament in Syracuse and gave them a run for the money before falling 76-65.

The team was just 5-32 when he joined them four years ago and last season they finished at 23-7 including the longest winning streak in the country at 15 games.

"I'm honored to be here," said Gonzales. "I was once sitting out there at one of those tables just like you. Now I'm head coach at a Division I basketball program."

The coach told athletes that if they believe in something they can do it citing his own life example. "There are 321 Division I basketball head coaching jobs and I wanted to be one. People said to me how are you going to do that? Well, it was my dream and I don't believe in the word no. You've got to dream big," declared Gonzales.

The coach talked about his team's winning season and battle with Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament. He also told young people
