ATTLEBORO - March of 2004 may seem along time away, but for some folks scattered throughout the Diocese of Fall River, it'sjust around the comer. The Centennial Celebration Committee, responsible for ushering in the festivities for the 1(X)1b anniversary of the diocese, has already been planning a wide variety of activities and special features for the event The committee, es: tablished by then ~ Bishop of Fall River Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., in 2000, is comprised of 17 priests, religious and lay persons, representing a cross-section of the diocese which covers from the Attleboros in the north. to Seekonk in the west, to Fall River and New Bedford ~ in the south, to Cape Cod, Martha's Vmeyard and Nantucket to the east, and all points in between. Chairing the committee is Msgr. Daniel F. Hoye, pastor ofSt John the Evangelist Parish in Attleboro. '''The committee has been planning various events for nearly a year now:' said Msgr. Hoye. "Things are moving well. 'This celebration will allow all of us to take a look at our past, celebrate our present and anticipate our future." The celebration began unofficially last November when the committee introduced the new centenniallogo designed by Dominican Sister Gertrude Gaudette. A colorized version of the creation appeared in November 22 edition of The Anchor, and
has found a home in the publication's masthead ever since. The Anchor has also been running a chronological series of diocesan parish histories scheduled to wrap up next March 12, the actual birthday of the ' diocese. For the past few months Father Barry W. Wall, i; pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Fall River and dioc- • esan archivist, has been sifting through mounds of' photographs, histories and publications preparing a , Centennial History of the Dio- : cese of Fall River. Published by Signe Publishing of : France, the collector's item will be available during the winter of 2004, with marketing taking place this' coming fall. t, Another collector's item ~ in the works is a video history that will offer a visual n~w ~ look at the rich past and present day vibrancy of the diocese and the hopeful ex•" pectations for its second - . . century of ministry to the faithful of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. Copies of the video will be distributed to parishes and schools for their use, and to public access TV channels for airing throughout the diocese. In the following months, through the end of2004, many diocesan agencies, apostolates and offices will offer special centennial observances and programs appropriate to their particular mission. Many ofthese events will incorporate the centennial theme of'The : Spirit Gives life." Also envisioned are study programs focusing on the centennial for use in diocesan schools and religious education programs.
