Born in County Cork, Ireland, a daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret (Marshall) Fogarty, she entered the institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in Loughlynn, County Roscammon, Ireland, on March 10, 1953. She pronounced her first vows on Sept. 17, 1955 and her finals vows on March 17, 1958 in Coldash, England.

After completing her studies in London, she was sentto Kobe, Japan, to teach at the Stella Maris International School where she la~er became the principal.

In 1974, she came to the United States and taught in Espirito Santo School in Fall River, while also continuing her studies.

Sister Fogarty was honored by Harris County, Ga., with the "I Make a Difference in Harris County:' award, which recognizes those who go out of their way to improve the lives of all or any of the county's residents.

She was a member of the Fellowship of Christians United for Service, the Child Abuse Council, and the Habitat for Humanity of the Tri-County Area, all in Harris County.

She leaves two sisters, MarjOlie Buckley of Cork and Theresa Norton of Galway, Ireland; nieces and nephews; and members of her religious community.

Bishop Robert E. Mulvee of the Diocese of Providence, R.I., was principal concelebrant at Sister Fogarty's funeral Mass April 4 at her order's motherhouse, the Holy Family Convent Chapel on Fruit Hill Avenue in North Providence. Burial was in the Holy Family Cemetery.

The just wage A hundred years ago American coal miners were dying of black lung disease. Young children working in the cotton mills were victims of white lung disease. Across the nation, 'Workers wereprac- ' tically corporate slaves. Unregul~ted capitalism had created a gulf between those who controlled the commercial life of the country and the many who worked to keep it prQfitable. The rich got richer; the poor became poorer. Efforts to protect workers were discouraged. Yet, the beginnings oflabor refonn were underway with such leaders, as Samuel Gompers and the Knights of Labor. Eventually; unions became.a reality, arid a Department of Labor evolved into a presidential cabinet position.

At the tum of this century, new problems have risen in the marketplace that have the potential for real diffic,ulties in the world of commerce. This past week The New York Times in its Money and .

'Business Section featured a revealing article entitled "Executive Pay." Amid the fallout of the many corporate scandals that have swept the nation, the report detailed the salaries of corporate leaders at a time when the national jobless rate is ever increasing. Thousands of fired Americans are job-hunting while the chief executive officers of businesses are receiving lavish perks.

Let's look at some published facts: Delta Airlines is reducing its working staff while the CEO received a total compensation of more than $13 million. The CEO of Continental Airlines did a bit better. He received more than-$14 million for a year's work. Banks continue to increase customer charges. They are forced to do this to pay the salaries of their CEOs. For example, Bank of America's chief received $22 million. Fleet Boston's boss only received $3 million. Some CEOs took small compens,ation, but they really didn't need any salaries. The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, a fonner·mill in New Bedford, has total equity holdings of more than $34 billion. The man at Microsoft is only in the $12.millioncategory.

Now add to these such perks as private jet aircraft; extra life , insurance policies, personal bodyguards and luxury travel accommodations, and one can easily see that the little man on the block still has to save his pennies in order to survive. As the Times report , pointed out, "The money follows the pinstripes.': At a time when the entire globe is facing economic uncertainties, the disparities found in the corporate world are unfair, if not unjust. Half of our planet is starving;' others are dying in wars and revolutions; the homeless are filling urban streets; senior citizens are marginally surviving. A litany ()f economic problems and difficulties plague our earth.

The Churcn has always taught that to fulfill the requirements of justice and equality, every effort must be made to end the immense economic inequaJlties existing in the world. Vatican II reflected, "All kinds of discrimin~tion in \yages and working conditions should be avoided." Economic activity is the fruit of the collaboration of many people. It is unjust to organize and direct this activity in such a way that people are exploited. When it comes to business, how quickly we forget that God destined the earth and all it contains for all people" so that all created things would be shared fairly by all mankind. When we deny.this, ownership can often be' the source of greed and avarice, causing dissention and division Qn all levels of life, even that of corporations. Let's hope that soine sense of balance, fairness and equity be restored to corporate America. Whatever happened to the concept of the just wage?

Let the prophets among us be heard By

During these trying days, I often wonder how many Catholics realize that they have a prophetic role to play in rectifying things.

Right after Vatican, Council II, the laity's prophetic role was often the center of attention. In the council's Constitution on·the Church, we read: "Christ gave [the laity] understanding of the faith and the grace of speech so that the power of the Gospel might shine forth in their daily social and family life."

In other words, the laity, like the prophets, are expected to read our difficult times and to speak out.

One of the first great prophets, Moses, helps us to define the essence of the laity's prophetic role.

We see him ascending Mt. Sinai to speak to God and then descending to speak to his people about what he heard. Understanding God's mind and promulgating it io those who need to hear of it is ' of the essence for a prophet.

Prophets not only understood God's mind, but that of their

I remembered back to my childhood, when I used to play Wiffie Ball with a pal who was a Yankee fan - and who by the way, was neither a native New Yorker nor the ~on or grandson of a Yankee fan. I recollected about how I was always Carl Yastrzemski and he was Mickey Mantle. And I also recalled how rare my Wiffie-Ball wins were. ·How realistic could it get?

Before I,knew it, the beads in my hand had taken me back to where they began and my rosary was over. So much for peace and serenity. By the time I had finished "praying," I was frustrated and angry. I did the only

It is a very realistic apprflisal of the difficulties facing the United States (and/or anycountry) that embarks on a mission that wants to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq. I would like to expand the area of concern to all of the world, if you will. Our country has a long and sad record when it comes to our efforts to promote democracy. After our successful efforts in ridding the world of the menace of Nazi Germany and a militaristic Imperial Japan, we have settled on an incomplete and frightening armi-

stice in Korea, lost our adventure in southeast Asia, invaded Granada and Panama for obscure preemptive reasons, backed the wrong sides in the bloody affairs in EI Salvador and Guatemala, watched our sons and fathers getting killed in Lebanon and Somalia and are part of an uneasy armistice in Bosnia. Our track record is spotty at best would you

say? Our 'efforts at the United Nations prior to our preemptive strike in Iraq were conducted in an atmosphere clouded by the momentum of a military buildup that was akin to a runaway train that cannot be stopped. We wasted another opportunity to achieve peace.

Father James Kelly, a native of New Bedford and a retired U.S. Navy chaplain, died during Lent 2002 when his private airpl~ne slammed into a mountain on the way to Palm Sunday Masses in southwest Alaska's isolated missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal, to be taken up in most dioceses on April 27, helped support Father Kelly, who'flew to 23 rural villages in the Aleutian chain, sometimes celebrating Mass on kitchen tables.

Delaware bishop cites tension between faith, war WILMINGTON, Del. (CNS)The war in Imq has put many Catholics "in a place of tension" as they try to stay faithful to their Church and stay loyal to their country, Wilmington Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli said, acknowledging his own connicted views.

"Deep down we know that the Holy Father is right," the bishop said in an interview with The Dialog, newspaper of the Wilmington diocese, referring to papal opposition to the war. "Neveltheless, we are all Americans, and we arc all aware of the horrors imposed on the Iraqi people for 30 years.

"Through prayer, we must remain in solidarity with our own armed forces. We continue to pray for peace, for those who serve and for the innocent people of Imq," the bishop added.

Before the U.S.-led war began March 19, Pope John Paul IT and his aides repeatedly argued that a preemptive strike against Iraq was not justified and that decisions on war belonged to the United Nations.

Once the war was under way, the pope repeated his belief that "violence and weapons can never resolve the problems of man."

With the United States now at war, Bishop Saltarelli said, "we have to hope that our aims wi II be accomplished: thaI the despotic regime will

be replaced, that the people of Iraq will be free to pursue the basic rights that God makes available to all of us, that there will be the disarming of all weapons of mass destruction, and that our men and women will be returned to their loved ones as soon as possible."

The bishop said he understands the Bush administration's view that Saddam Hussein's disregard for U.N. Security Council resolutions dating to the end of the Gulf War necessitated military action.

"Twelve years is a long time.

(Under the cease-fire agreement), the condition was that Saddam disarm, and he agreed to that. Could this continue to go on forever?"

Bishop Saltarelli said he was disappointed the United Nations did not do more in the past decade to enforce its resolutions.

"This was the body established to assure that we don't find ourselves in the kind ofconflict we're in now," he said. "It seems to me they could have been more effective."

On the other hand, the bishop said, he recognizes the "tremendous implications" of the pre-emptive strike on Iraq. "If war is seen as the way to solve these kinds of problems, we're in big trouble. We should always negotiate for peace and peaceful means."

Fall River diocese marks its centennial The following are the next in a series ofhistorical sketches ofthe parishes comprising the Diocese ofFall Riyer, founded in 1904. The series will run in chronological order from oldest to newest parish, according to diocesan archives, concluding in March, 2004, the centennial anniversary of the diocese. In April 1882 the Immaculate Conception Parish was formed and Father Kiernan was its first pastor. He officiated at the old Notre Dame Church, and boarded with the family of John Heffernan at the corner of St. Joseph and Ashton streets. Later he rented a tenement from Andrew Lyons on Mason Street and this was the original rectory of the parish, which extended from Quarry Street on the west to the Watuppa Lakes on the east and from Bedford Street on the north to the Quequechan River on the south.

History relates how the first church, a wooden structure just south of the current church, was built by parishioners who brought their own tools and . worked gratis. But when an 1882 fire destroyed the Flint Mill and put many of the parishioners out of work, the church construction was impacted. However, work eventually continued. The cornerstone was laid in April 1883 and the church dedicated Sept.

14, 1883 by Providence, R.I., Bishop Thomas F. Hendricken, because the area was at the time

part of the Providence diocese.

Father George H. Flanagan came to Immaculate Conception in 1925 and quickly built upon the existing ground work laid for a new church.

The cornerstone for the new Romanesque-style church was blessed on Oct. 16, 1927.

The church wa~ renovated extensively in 1982 by volunteers of the parish, and on May 16, 1982, Bishop Daniel A. Cronin celebrated the parish's Mass of centennial.

The parish today has nearly 40 altar servers, an active Women's Guild, a Social Activities Committee, a church choir, and the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine program has 110 students.

The current pastor is Father Kenneth J. Delano. The secretary and coordinator of religious education is Colleen Laliberte. The sexton is Albert Jalbert. The services of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish were taxed and the d.istances for so many people who then walked to church had become burdensome. .

A building at the comer of Snell Street and Eight Rod Way, now Plymouth Avenue, was rented as a place to say Mass.

A parcel of land on Snell Street near the present rectory was purchased and a wooden frame church with stained glass windows built. The first Mass was said there on Nov. 1, 1882 even while it was still under construction. It was dedicated by Bishop Harkins on Jan. 12, 1890. A rectory was built and as the parish grew steadily the structure was added onto in 1903.

Father Doyle died in 1893 at the age of 47 and was succeeded by Father Bernard F. McCahill of Taunton. A cornerstone for a new church designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram was laid in 1896. It would

It has been staffed by the Sisters of Mercy as well as lay teachers.

Subsequent pastors included Msgr.

George C. Maxwell, Msgr. John J. Kelly, and Father David A. O'Brien.

Two months after Father Francis M. Coady arrived as pastor a raging fife on April 19, 1973 completely destroyed the church. It could not be salvaged. Within two days a temporary chapel has been set up in time for Palm Sunday Masses.

On April 27, 1975, a multi purpose building that included the school, a new chapel and social center was dedicated by Bishop Daniel A. Cronin.

'Quad King' not afraid to talk about his Catholic faith PHILADELPHIA (CNS) Timothy Goebel, the reigning Olympic bronze medalist who won his second consecutive silver medal in the World Figure Skating Championships last month, loves his Catholicfaith and isn't afraid to talk about it.

Goebel, 22, is also known as the "Quad King" because he has landed more quadruple jumps in competition - close to 70 - than anyone in the history of figure skating.

Five years ago in Switzerland, Goebel made history as the first

American skater to land a clean quadruple jump in International Skating Union competition. At the same time, he became the first skater in the world to land a quadruple Salchow - a three-part jump.

During last year's Olympics in Salt Lake City, Goebel also became the first to land three quadruple jumps in a single program at the Olympics. Less than one month later, he landed six quads at the World Championships in Japan. In January, he won the silver medal at the 2003 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Dallas.

In February, in between practices for 2003 World Figure Skating Championships March 25-27 in Washington, Goebel gave an interview via E-mail to The Catholic Standard & Times, newspaper of the Philadelphia Archdiocese.

The skating champion said that as a Catholic and "as somewhat of a public figure" he thinks it is important to be a good example to others.

"I try to be a role model and pray for the grace to be an example of Catholic virtues to others. I attend Mass at least once a week, but really make an effort to go twice a week," he said.

When asked how he prepared spiritually for the 2002 Winter Olympics, he said he did not prepare for it any differently than for any other event, but he did make sure he prayed at the Catholic chapel in the Olympic Village.

"I don't usually pray for a certain placement," he said, "but for the Olympics I did pray for a spot on the podium."

Goebel said having a strong

prayer life is similar to training for any sport at an elite level. "It takes discipline and sacrifice and at times can be a great struggle, but in the end you know it's what you need to do to succeed, and you find it in yourself to do it."

"It would be nice sometimes to just sleep in on Sunday and not go to church," he added, "but then I would feel guilty and lazy. It's the same if I blow off a day of training.

Training conditions the body, and church conditions the soul."

His physical training on weekdays consists of three hours a day on the ice and three hours of stretching or working out. He is also taking a few classes at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and working toward an inter-

At times when he might have felt like giving up, he stuck with it, telling himself, "I can't give up yet, it's not over."

"I always knew," he said. "that in the long run, if I didn't keep trying, I would look back often and think of all that could have been. and regret not at least trying once more."

Brent Zeringue, who founded the organization about five years ago,: said he began it as a response to what he was seeing around him.

"I've been involved in youth ministry since my college day~:' he told the Clarion Herald. newspaper of the New Orleans Archdiocese. ''Too often, I saw young men drift away from the Church, and that's not something I wanted for my sons. I know that to be a Catholie man today is hard. So I told my wife that I wanted to start something for boys."

Zeringue, the father of six boys . and three girls, said his calling was to develop a program for fathers and sons, but, he added, about one-third of the events scheduled are for the entire family, like the family beach retreat held last summer.

Kepha - the Aramaic word for "rock" - is under the patronage of three holy figures: St. John Bosco, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a young Italian who, although wealthy, gave his money anq goods to the poor and kept an active faith life while at the same time keeping an active life with his peers in early 20th-century Italy.

Kepha is defined by five charisms, Zeringue said. They are apologetics, brotherhood, charity, mortification and prayer.

Apologetics includes each boy learning a new Bible verse each month. Mortification can be as simple as taking a cold shower at times.

Charity includes helping others, and that, said Zering~e, includes going to Baton Rouge to help serve . meals at the soup kitchen run by Mother Teresa's nuns, the Missionaries of Charity.

perhaps the Divine Men;:y chaplet or the rosary. The boys are encouraged to go to confession frequently, Zeringue said, and they are expected to do daily chores.

All members get up at 2 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month and walk to an adoration chapel for an hour of prayer. If there is no nearby adoration chapel, then the hour is spent in prayer wherever they are.

Brotherhood is an integral patt of the organization, said Zeringue.

The boys and fathers all know each other. and the boys support each other. "We've got a group of ordinary boys - some shy, some out'going, some athletic, s9me not so athletic. But they really support each other." .

Kepha is growing across the country without active recruiting on · Zeringue's part. "We do what we do, let other people look at what we do and they want to do that, too."

In March, he Went to New York state to statt a chapter there.

There is a chapter in 'Okl~homa City, he said, with 12 to 15 fathers · and sons. "We may see each other only once or twice a year," Zeringue said, "but we keep in touch through E-mail and the ex· c,hange of monthly calendars."

A semi-annual retreat focuses on chastity. If that sounds serious, it has its lighter side. Stang senior places secon~ at sy~posiUID NORTH DARTMOUTH Bishop Stang High School Senior Klistin Su recently earned second place at the Southern New England Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the . Harvard Medical School.

Su's winning research paper "The Ability of Tea Antioxidants to Quench Free Radicals," earned her an expense paid trip to the National Symposium in Colorado Springs this May where she will compete for a $16;000 scholarship award and a trip to the International Youth Science Forum.

She also earned first place in the 2002 Massachusetts State Science fair at MIT garnering $1,000 scholarship and the Pfizer Discovery Tec'hnology Center Award.

Su is the daughter of Timothy and Madeline Su of Westport and plans to pursue scientific research in college.

The symposium at Harvard featured keynote presentations, research presentations by 10 students, tours of the school, an opportunity for student networking and an awards banquet.

Pope encourages Catholic young people to pray rosary in public By

.vATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II encouraged Catholic young people to pray the rosary in public without shame, saying Mary would help them reach the true happiness offered only by Christ.

"Humanity has a decisive need for the witness of free and courageous young people who dare to go against the current and proclaim with force and enthusiasm their own faith in God, lord and savior," he said in a message for World Youth Day 2003.

"Don't be ashamed to recite the rosary alone, while going to school, to university or to work, along the street and on public transportation," the pope said.

"Get into the habit of reciting it among yourselves, in your groups, mov~ments and associations; don't hesitate to suggest its recitation at home to your parents and brothers and sisters, because it revives and strengthens the bonds between family members," he said.

The annual message to youth, which came during a year of the rosary proclaimed by the pope, was released recently in Italian only at the Vatican.

World Youth Day 2003 will be celebrated in most dioceses April 13, Palm Sunday. This year, the U.S. observance of World Youfh Day is October 25-

26.

THESE NINE students from St. Mary's School, New Bedford, were award winners in the recent Rensselaer Region III Science Fair at Bristol Community College. Several were invited to compete in the state science fair this June.

"Following Mary's example," the pope said in the message, "you will be able to give (Christ) your unconditional 'yes.' There won't be any room in your existence for egoism and

laziness."

He said Christ's dying words on the cross to the you th fu I Apostle John, "Behold your mother," made Mary the mother of all humanity. The pope encouraged young people to turn to Mary in difficult times to feel the motherly comfort of her tenderness.

"I have always experienced in my life the loving and efficacious presence of the mother of the Lord," said the pope, whose papal motto "TOfUS TUlls" ("Entirely Yours") is addressed to Mary.

"Mary accompanies me every day in the fulfillment of my mission as successor of Peter," he said. ' The 82-year-old pontiff looked forward to the next international celebration of World Youth Day in 2005 in Cologne, Germany, telling young people that "the road is sti II long but the two years that separate us from that appointment can serve for intense preparation."

He said he had chosen "We want to see Jesus" as the theme for World Youth Day 2004 and "We have come to adore him" as the theme for 2005.

"In this time that is threatened by violence, hatred and war, may you witness that (Christ) is the only one who can give true peace to the human heart, to families and ,to the earth's peoples," he said.

"Commit yourselves to looking for and promoting peace, justice and fraternity. And don'l forget the words of the Gospel: 'Blessed are the peacemakers, because they shall be called children of God,'" the pope said.

The war in your living room!

Just think, you can sit in your living room in the United States and watch a war halfway across the world, almost in real time. You can see reporters "embedded" with troops who are fighting on the ground or preparing to fly out on missions. You can watch press conferences led by American military leaders as well as by Iraqi officials. You can watch bombs hit their targets either by way of the planes that released them or the cameras mounted in Baghdad.

And no, this is not a video game. It may look like one, but it's not. The young men and women on those aircraft carriers, in that desert, in those'

helicopters, are real. The people on the ground are real too. The pain is real, the fury is real and the blood is very, very real.

The questions are real, too, and they continue. If you're paying attention, you know that many people - including Pope John Paul II - have not stopped asking questions about this war, and that's a good thing. People are still asking questions about wars fought hund,reds of years ago. It's the way we learn.

But I want to go back to the war in your living room. How does it make you feel?

It might make you feel sad, angry or scared. Scared for people you know and love who are serving, scared for the unknown consequences and

scared for the future.

The war in your living room also might make you feel something else. It might lead you to feel more - connected. t

The war in our living room, waged by our country, might just be broadening our perspective a little.

After all, this is your country, and in just a few short years (or months, depending on how old you are!) you'll be voting, which means you'll be

taking your place in the important job of making decisions about how your country should run. Whether you approve of this war or not, the fact that the decision to wage it was made by officials elected by citizens might make you aware that when it happens - your vote and your opinion "does" make a difference.

Further, if you know anything at all about the situation in Iraq, you know that it didn't happen yesterday or even last week. The suffering of the people of Iraq both before and during this war - is the result of a lot of factors stretched out over time.

What might hit you when you watch the war in your living room is that in some weird way you are connected

to what's going on. No, it's not your fault, and you can't fix it, but what you're seeing right there in your living room is the fruit of sin - of a lot of people's sin, across time and space. It's just like the suffer-' ing you see in your own town, in your own family. There's such a thing as personal responsibility, but there's also such a thing as the human family's failure to live up to God's promise as a whole.

Watching the war in your living room might remind you of that.

Finally, I hope that through the prayers you say each night for all those suffering under oppression and war you're hearing God's promise that his love is always more powerful than even our greatest sin.
