ELECTION Bishops forDlulating plans for statewide voter registration drive BOSTON - The Roman Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts, acting through the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, will be formulating plans for a voter registration drive in parishes across the Commonwealth later this year. This effort is part of a national initiative called Faithful Citizenship, emphasizing the moral obligation of Catholics to participate in the political process, sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). As stated by the USCCB, "At this time, some Catholics may feel politically homeless, sensing that no political party and too few candidates share a consistent concern for human life and dignity. However, this is not a time for retreat

constituents: "My name is . I1ive at -, I'm calling/E-mailing to urge Sen./Rep. _ _ _ to split the marriage and civil union issues into two amendments. The people have a right to vote separately on marriage between a man and a woman." MCC asks all Catholic voters to contact their senators/representatives and urges them to get their friends and neighbors to do the same. It also asks people to contact their senators/representatives who have voted in favor of traditional marriage and thank them for listening to the voters. Even if you have already contacted your senator/representative, MCC urges you to do so again. Legislators' Contact Info: Phone: Call the Senate Clerk at 617-722-1276 and Thrn to page 13 - Marriage

or discouragement. We need more, not less engagement in political life. We urge Catholics to become more involved. We urge all Catholics to register, vote, and become more involved in public life, to protect human life and dignity, and to advance the common good." Parishes are among the few institutions that can reach groups that notably are unregistered or under represented in the political process. People of low-income, minorities, immigrants, and the young are among those groups. Voter registration drives must be non-partisan, not tied to any issue or electoral campaign, and otherwise conducted in a neutral manner. More information will be forthcoming by the summer.
