A Time of Grace: A Season of Renewal People in the Church today, clergy as well as laity, often experience the time in which we live as one of tremendous challenge. This is especially true in our own culture where traditional values and beliefs are constantly being questioned. Each of us, young and old, seeks the grace we need to be faithful to what God is asking of us.

With the coming of the Third Millennium, our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, has asked us to use the next three years as a time to rejoice, to give thanks, and to ask forgiveness for our failures.

The year 2000 has been proclaimed by our Holy Father as a year of grace, a Holy Year during which we strive in a personal way and in a communal way to update and expand our knowledge and appreciation of the faith we share.

No doubt, you have already seen numerous stories and articles on television and in the newspapers about the "new millennium." Most of what we read in the secular

press, however, completely ignores the call to grace that our Holy Father is proposing for us.

During the next three years, there are three basic themes that we are called to consider: 1997 is devoted to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world - yesterday, today and forever; the year 1998 will be dedicated to the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit; and the year 1999 will broaden our vision as we contemplate God the Father. Then, in the year 2000, we will celebrate the Trinity as a universal Church and acknowledge throughout the Church the mystery of the Triune God. Each parish, school and entity in this diocese is being asked to consider ways of infusing these tenets of our faith into their own existing programs.

Diocese sends 550,000 to flood victims in Azores Bishop Sean O'Malley, OFM, Cap., has announced that $50,000 has been collected and forwarded to the Azores by the Fall River diocese to aid victims of massive flooding in December, which wiped' out homes and caused millions of dollars in damage. The money was transmitted to the bishop of the Azores, Most Rev. Antonio de Sousa Braga, S.C.J., for distribution to parishes where devastation from the storm was most severe, principally on the island' of St. Michael.

Mapping plans HONG KONG (CNS) - Plans that will see the governmentapproved Chinese Catholic Church into the third millennium will be mapped out at the Sixth National Catholic Representatives' Congress in Beijing in the second half of 1997, A joint December meeting of the government-sanctioned Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church in China and the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association's standing committee set some congressional guidelines and the tenhitive time frame, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. The Legion of Mary began in the Fall River Diocese in 1952, when the bishop, the late: James L. Connelly, invited Legion of Mary members from Boston to help establish the organization in his diocese. The late Msgr. Daniel Shalloo, who was then a priest at St. Joseph's parish, Fall River, was one of the first diocesan directors. He was followed by other parish priests who began the Legion of Mary in their parishes.

The late Father John Hogan and Msgr. Henri Hamel were spiritual directors for the New Bedford Curia. Presently, the diocesan director is Father Barry Wall, pastor of St. Anthony parish, Mattapoisett, and the New Bedford Curia s~piritual director is Father Matthew Sullivan, SS.CC, who is also the chaplain for Bristol County House of Correction.

Pastors of parishes where the Legion of Mary has a praesidium, are usually the spiritual directors in that parish. At present, in the Fall River Diocese, there are II praesidia, which includes one junior group, at St. Joseph parish, New Bedford. One of the newest , praesidium, Mary Our Mother, of St. Bernard's, Assonet, has an active memoer who has been commissioned by Bishop O'Malley to promote the De Montford's True Devotion in our diocese. This member gives a series of "talks" on the True Devotion in any parish where she is invited, At Our Lady of Mount Carmel, New Bedford, there is a Portuguese praesidium, the Our Lady of Fatima praesidium and in Attle-

Thinking of China .

The history of the Catholic Church in China has been bizarre and tragic, to say the least.~romthe days ofNestorian~ ism to today's efforts of Maryknoll, the message of Christianity has had hard sledding, caused not only by the drastic developments within China itself but by western domination.

The Franciscans made some headway, but the Black Death erased all their work. The Jesuits accomplished outstanding work as missionaries, especially Father Matteo Ricci, who pioneered cultural relations between China and Europe, but they were recalled because they were becoming too Chinese.

Rome thought it could rule China in the same way as it was ruling Europe, but the. West could not and did not want to understand the East-This mind-set has been the rule ofthumb up to our own times. The coming ending of British rule in Hong Kong and the tiny foothold of Portuguese Macao constitute the last residue of WeStern colonialism in China.

The recent death of Deng Xiaoping has called attention to the tremendous leap that China has made in these last years of the century. As we approach the new millennium, China is free to begin charting its own course in world affairs. The aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 still reminds China that at that time America sent an expeditionary force to Peking to protect capitalist investments. When discussion of human rights in China takes place, it is too often forgotten that the nation suffered not only at the hands of its own rulers but also at those of Western warlords.

But China is now awake and the West must realize that a tremendous force is now active in world events. The capitalist world equates China with dollar signs. The perceived need to balance the trade deficit has drowned out the legitimate cry for human rights. Even the United States has been somewhat duplicitous as it attempts to expand its influence in the Far East and especially in China~ We can be sure that China knows· we can be bought and sold. All the talk aboufworld.superpow-, ers pales in light of our pussyfooting attitude toward human rights. Our protests abroad do not ring true_when we have all but abandoned such efforts,at home. . What is true of Western governments in relation to China is true also of the Church but now is the time for her to begin a new China policy by throwing out the baggage of past mistakes and acting on the belief that a native clergy is the best bet for the future growth of CatholiCism in the nation. We should never forget that the blood of martyrs waters the seeds offaith.

The martyrs of China should be seen as the cornerstone of our new efforts at evangelization.

Our times have witnessed profound changes in the ways that people are joined together. We must re.call that such changes' result from the ways that people evaluate their cultural, economic and social circumstances. It would be well, especially in the case of China, to remember that changes of this nature inevitably impact on the areas of civil liberty and the attainment of the common good. It follows that they include the right to free assembly, expression of personal opinions and of professing religion both publicly and privately.

At this particular moment in history, may we hope for and work toward the implementation of these goals in the internationallife ofthe planet and, at this time of change, especially in the life of the Chinese people. \

WASHINGTON(CNS)-"Money for abortion" is the agenda behind the Clinton administration's push to increase U.S. funding for family planning abroad; said Bishop James T: McHugh of Camden, NJ. ' .

"Ultimately the name of the game is money for abortion," he wrote in a column. "The po'pulation control organizations want U.S. money so they can promote abortion as a family planning service in foreign nations."

He made his comments in a syndicated "Life Issues Forum" colurnn for Feb. 21, a little more than a week after the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly approved the administration's request to increase and accelerate U.S. funding for family planning programs abroad. ,The proposal was due for a Senate, vote before the end· of February.

Bishop Mc H ugh is a member of the U.S. bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities. He has represented the Holy See's Observer Mission to the United Nations for more than 20 years as a special adviser on demographic and population issues and as the Vatican observer to the U.N .. Commission on Population and Development.

"Funds for family planning have long been part of U.S. foreign aid," Bishop McHugh said.

He noted that such funds cannot be used to pay directly for abortions, and from 1984 to 1993 they could not be given to organizations that' provide or promote

abortion as well as contraception and sterilization.

"As one of his first acts in office in 1993, President Clinton reversed this po"iicy:; 'making organizations with abortion"activities eligible for U.S. family planning funds, he said.

Prior to the House vote - which was forced by a White House "finding" in January that reduced funding was hurting U.S. population control objectives abroad the administration "launched a major propaganda and lobbying effort to pressure Congress into softening its stand against funding abortion advocacy groups overseas," Bishop McHugh said.

Central to the propaganda campaign," he said, "was the need to frame the debate in terms offamily planning - not abortion policy.

That resounded in the media and was persuasive in the debate before the House of Representatives.

"The sad fact is that, co.ntrary to congressional intent, U.N. policy and the policies of many nations, the Clinton administration has made, it clear that it intends to make abortion a method offamily planning worldwide.'~

Bishop McHugh sharply disputed several assertions of population control advocates - particularly the claim "repeated so often that it has become a virtlJal mantra" that "easily availabli:, !=ontraception reduces the number of abortions."

Many regard that as "common sense," he said, but "it iB a claim without evidence to ba(:k it up.

Where evidence is availabk it shows just the opposite."

"For example, in thl: United States and most other developed nations, where contrace:ption is readily available, abortion rates are high and there is prc:ssure to make abortion on demand a standard part of social policy,'" he said.

Despite the administration's claim that it wants to reduce the number of abortions, he said, its policy is aimed at funding organizations such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation, which seeks to expand abortion services and eliminate legal restrictions on abortion worldwide.

He said that many (:ountries "resent bitterly" outside pressures to reduce their population growth, but they fear that resistllnce will lead to "decreased foreign aid for other important projects."

"American government officials deny this, but many foreign diplomats admit it on condition that they will not be quoted," he said.

In December, the Pope inaugurated a three-year preparation program of prayer and spiritual renewal for the Great Jubilee. His aides say the 76-year-old pope views this period, aimed at revitalizing the church a.t its roots, as potentially the most important in his pontificate.

The pope has been quietly hearing progress reports throughout 1996 on plans to hold major meetings with Jews and other religious groups in the lead-up to the millennial year. He has reviewed ambitious regional synod plans, and the first such assembly - on the Americas - will probably be held next fall.

Increasingly, the pope mentions the importance of the jubilee in speeches to bishops, lay groups and even foreign ambassadors. The millennium is on his mind, and he is clearly determined to personally lead the church across its threshold.

The pontifrs vision for the future is so grand that it often overs hadows the daily evidence that his stamina is fading, the result in part of a nervous system disorder.

Sheep clonin.g raises concerns about human cloning WASHINGTON (CNS) - Recent reports about successful cloning in mammals have rightly raised ethical concerns about cloning humans, said Richard Doerflinger, associate director of t.he U.S. bishops' Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities. . ,Doerflinger's Feb. 25 statement came after news broke worldwide about the first-ever cloning of an adult animal at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland.

The achievement, long thought to be biologically impossible, was accomplished with sheep. A total of nine cloned lambs have been born so far. The first, named Dolly, was born in July.

Genetic scientists who have observed the results of the recent clonings generally agree that the relatively simple procedure means the ability to clone human beings is not far behind.

"Catholic teaching rejects the cloning of human beings because this is not a worthy way to bring a human being into the world," Doerflinger said. "Children have a right to have real parents, and to be conceived as the fruit of marital love between husband and wife."

Children "are not products we can manufacture to our specifications," Doerflinger said. "Least of all should they be produced as deliberate 'copies' of other people to ensure that they have certain desired features.

Doerflinger referred to "Donum Vitae," a document released 10 years ago by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Titled "Instruction on Respect for Human Life in its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation," the Vatican document emphasized that "what is technically possible is not for that very reason morally admissable."

Protestants and the Way of the Cross Q. I am doing some Lenten study on the Stations of the Cross. Why were they not carried over to the Protestant churches If they originated before the Reformation?

Is there a connection between the stations and the path to Calvary followed by modern visitors to J erusalem? (Wisconsin) A. The devotion we know as the Stations (or Way) of the Cross was one of many forms of devotion developed during the very late Middle Ages, generally the l200s or l300s.

Politically, culturally and religiously those were tumultuous and painful times for the vast majority of ordinary people. Practicing and passing on any faith was enormously difficult.

Into this picture came, among others, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Dominic and their followers, who helped popularize such expressions of faith and prayer as the Christmas creche (St. Francis) and the rosary (Dominicans).

The Stations were one of these devotions, serving both as prayer and a sort of catechism about the sufferings of the Lord.

Various Franciscan communities, who already held responsibility for the holy places in Jerusalem for Latin Rite Cat.holics, helped popularize the devotion.

The Stations once: included seven falls under the cross. Another form had a total of 43 separate stations. But the 14 stations as we know them became fairly stabilized by Pope Clement XII in 1731.

For some years now most publications of the Stations of the Cross have included a 15th station or meditation, calling to mind Christ's victory over death in the resurrection.

The entire city of Jerusalem was leveled by the Roman armies about 40 years after the death of Jesus. Thus, locat.ing precisely, for example, the falls of Jesus on the way to Calvary is next to impossible.

At any rate, the markings of the 14 stations along the Via Dolorosa (Sorrowful Way) in old Jerusalem are comparatively recent. The accuracy and even historical validity of some of them are open to considerable question.

Nevertheless, the Stations ofthe Cross remain one of the richest ways in our tradition to reflect on our Lord's suffering and death.

The reasons Protestantism did not continue many devotional traditions such as the Stations are complicated.

Our fourth station, for example,. commemorates Jesus meeting his mother. Luke notes that Jesus stopped along the way to speak to "many women who mourned and lamented him," but he doesn't say Mary was among them. John places her at the foot of the cross, but not on the road.

With the Protestants' heavy emphasis on Scripture as the rule of faith, it is perhaps understandable that some of these popular devotions would not be picked up in the spirituality.

The story of Veronica wiping the face of Jesus is also not in the Gospels.

Is it "Ae-men" or "Aw-men"?

My wife started' the' whole convers~tional mess after Mass last week when she and her friend Marlene sighed in unison, "Ah, men."

Marlene's husband Bud and I made eye contact and retorted in our own duet, "Amen."

Only problem was I pronounced amen with the long "a" - aee-men. Bud said it with the dental hygienist "a" - aw··men.

So when do you say aw-men, and when do you say aee-men?

Bud quickly expounded his conviction. "You sing aw-mt1n, but when spoken in a prayer or sQmething, _ it's aee-men." .1 could tell that people within earshot had !!topped chewing and were trying to recite parts of the Mass with "amen" in it. at the same time they were singing songs in their heads with "amen" in the\Tl. "I wonder if the pronunciation has anything to do with Amman," mused Marlene. After a couple moments of silence punctuated by dull stares, she , added, "You know, the capital of Jordan."

"Is she talking about the country or the basketball . player?" asked Bud. Unfortunately for him, our pastor Father O'Kneei passed by our table. We put the "aw" vs. "aee" conundrum to him.

He rolled his eyes (no doubt in deep thought and impressed with our religious education fervor). He bent at the waist and rubbed his chin. He cleared his throat. He spread his arms wide and whispered (loud enough to be heard several tables away) in a resonant tone, "Potato. Potawto. Tomato. Tomawto. Aeemen. Awmen."

1started to say something, but Father O'Kneel put his hand out signaling silence. "I have spoken," he smiled. And he walked on.

Marlene and spouse shook their heads. "Ah, men," they giggled in unison.

World Youth Day attendees must register with NCCD WASHINGTON (CNS) - Anyone planning to attend World Youth Day events in Paris must register with the National Conference of Catholic Bishop!. in Washington or they will not get an events pass.

Registration with the Vatican, an NCCB announcement said, is not enough.

World Youth Day is scheduled for Aug. 19-24. Pope John Paul plans to attend.

Prospective U.S. attendees must register not only through the Vatican but through Washington and Paris.

Attendees must sign up with the Pontifical Council for the Laity at the Vatican and pay a $10 fee, which is used to offset the cost of World Youth Day attendance for youths from developing nations.

The Vatican will respond with a letter and registration number, but this number will not provide entry to World Youth Day. When attendees register with the NCCB, the NCCD will pass the registration information on to Paris to meet the Paris on-site requirements.

Registrants also will be advised to send requisite fees for their events pass, information kit, transportation pass, meals and lodging directly to Paris.

Only those who meet requirements involving all three cities will receive World Youth Day materials and passes.

Ana Villamil, who is coordinating U.S. participation in the event for the NCCB, said letters stipulating these requirements had been sent last fall to all diocesan youth directors. She said a reminder notice was to be sent before the end of February.

However, she added, the information has not reached down to all at the parish level, or to groups that are buying travel agents' World Youth Day tour packages.

Travel agents, she said, are precluded from registering groups with World Youth Day. Registration must be done through group leaders, who register a large number of participants at one time.

Young people ages 18-35 is the target group for World Youth Day events. Youths under 18 are welcome but there must be one chaperone for every six minors.

According to Bishop Zong, Chinese President Jiang Zemin, whom Deng promoted as his successor, has been friendly toward the religious sector.

Since 1993, either Jiang or his deputy has met with religious leaders every Lunar New Year to listen to their problems and solicit their opinions.

Human rights activist and Chinese dissident Harry Wu thinks of the deceased leader as less of a market reformer than a "butcher," he said in a Feb. 19 telephone interview with Catholic News Service from his home in Milpitas, Calif.

In 1957 while working as a Communist Party executive, Deng was involved in the arrest and imprisonment of more than I million Chinese intellectuals.

The ultimate source of our own vitality

By John F. Hllughi Along with many other Christians I often have wondered how to appreciate the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. Is such savoring reserved only for Pentecostalists or charismatics? Or is there some way to connect the Creed's '" believe in the Holy' Spirit" with a more mundane kind of experience?

As the sacrament of confirmation implies, the work of the Spirit includes the bestowing of confidence, courage or empowerment.

But how can we connect this teaching to real life?

We might begin by asking what it is that most empowers us.

- What gives us the courage to live and act?

- How often do we associate our need for courage with the work of the Holy Spirit?

Most of the time we hardly notice how deeply our lives are enmeshed in a complex social network of power sources that sustain us. Some of us are even able to go through life completely oblivious to the fact that whatever individual heroism we have achieved is impossible without the environing "system of heroics" - a term referring to the social criteria by which we measure our success or worth.

There are occasions, however, when one or more of our ordinary

power sources fails to'deliver. Since these are all finite, they inevitably bear flaws that will disappoint us.

Our parents are not perfect and they don't live forever; our friendships often fade; the social fabric that measures our accomplishments and even our ethical integrity begins to come apart.

We get fired from a job that gave us considerable prestige. We fail to live up to our own ethical ideals. Or we simply grow older and find it increasingly.difficult to measure up to the prevalent social standards of self-worth. .

The need for courage, however, never goes away. And it is by confessing this need, especially in moments of doubt and confusion, that we may be led to at least some appreciation of what Christian faith calls the Holy Spirit.

Christian faith allows us to measure our self-worth according to standards that go beyond those of the social world around us.

As the Lord and giver of life everywhere, the empowering Spirit of God is also the ultimate source of our own vitality. And for us humans the core of vitality is courage, as the 20th-century Protestant theologian Paul Tillich wrote.

So we may look for the work of God's enlivening Spirit at those points where we recognize our need for encouragement.

The Holy Spirit resides beneath, behind and within all the more proximate sources that give us our confidence. Humbly and quietly this divine font of courage energizes the immediate powers we normally tap into for our strength.

Ideally we would see these finite power sources as sacramental embodiments of an ultimate and inexhaustible wellspring of courage. But, in fact, we often treat the various loves of our life as idols, expecting from them an inexhaustible strength.

Their slightest flaws, Becker insightfully notes, can then be a major threat to our self-esteem.

However, in those critical moments when our immediate power sources disappoint us, the sense of a deeper empowerment may establish its presence beneath our lives.

Sometimes we may find that such experiences leave us stronger than before.

If this has ever happened to you, you can understand, even in such an ordinary event, at least something of what is meant by God's Spirit.

The psalmist heartens us: "The Lord is near to those whose courage has failed."

Through those who know their own need of courage, the power of Christ's Spirit pours into the world and begins to "renew the face of the earth;"

Bishop Connolly High School The French, Spanish and Portuguese Honor Society members at Bishop Connolly High School, Fall River, have been sent packing. They have been busy gathering and packing language, science, English, math and history texts for shipment to South Africa under the direction of Mrs. Suzi Silvia, Mrs. Carole Cordeiro and Mrs. Suzette Andrade.

Dr. J. Wayne Dudley, a professor at Salem State and a native of South Africa raises money throughout the year to pay shipping costs for texts gathered in projects such as this. His campaign to collect books in good condition has been a growing success. He is hoping to add to the scant supply of texts available to South African students. So far, Connolly has added 1,012 texts,

workbooks, readers and encyclopedias to the cause.

Five students at Bishop Connolly in Charles Dwyer's art program have been recognized for their work by,the Boston Globe in 'their annual Scholastic Art Awards. Alison Laboissonniere and Kimberly O'Brien received Gold Keys. Hayley Capoditupo and Megan Burns received Silver Keys. Jessica Morse received Honorable Mention.

An exhibit of Gold and Silver Key work will hang at the State Transportation Building in Boston in February and early March.

Pope calls Lenten retreat a "mountaintop" experience

The induction began with the presentation of colors and opening readings of Psalm 37:23-29 by Alicia DeSousa and Andrea Caetano. Mrs..GHnes then introduced· the entire student council including the executive board and the members general. Each council member was presented with a pin to be worn each day. Mrs. Glines told the members that their pins charged them to listen to the needs
