Pope Joyful About Peace, Concerned for Victims VATICAN CITY (NC)-Pope Paul VI said Jan. 24 that he shares the common rejoicing at the news of peace in Vietnam but now wants to concentrate on how to help the victims of the war. The Pope, in a special audience for newsmen on the feast of the patron of journalists, St. Francis de Sales, spoke of the peace developments in Vietnam with warmth but warned: "The armistice is a truce in battle. Subscription Campaign Feb. 18 Sunday, Feb. 18, has been designated as Anchor Subscription Drive Sunday. , It is the role of the Bishop not only to protect the flock entrusted to him but also to nur· ture the growth of each diocsean on his and her way to full sanctity. The diocesan press is a valuable tool to the Bishop but an even greater "valuable resource for the Catholic faithful, helping them to formulate truly Christian judgments and evaluations of the events of our times," stated Bishop Cronin. The Anchor, Official Newspaper of the Diocese of Fall River, has for 16 years attempted to reach each diocesan. Speaking to about 200 newsmen from around the world who are members of th~ Foreign Press Association in Rome, the Pope made his first public comment on the cease fire in Vietnam. "We share with all those who .rejoice in this news," the Pope told newsmen. "And we do not want to delay in sending our best wishes for peace, liberty, concord and prosperity both to the peoples of South and North Viet· nam." While obviously concerned with just how secure the peace is in Vietnam, Pope Paul declared: Turn to Page Four
Court Ruling Is R~jection Of Rights of the U~born; Father's Parental Rlights Members of the Committe for Pro-Life Affairs of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops were gathered in a regular sehed· uled meeting when the tragic news of the Supreme Court's decision was issued on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Immediately, members drew up a statement that was also approved by Cardinal Krol of Philadelphia, president of the Conference. The statement follows: The sweeping judgment of the U. S. Supreme Court in the Texas and Georgia abortion cases is a flagrant rejection of the unborn .
child's right to life. The Court has chosen to ignore the scientific evidence regarding the un· born child's human growth and development during the first 6 months of life in the womb of its mother. No consideration has been given to the parental rights of the child's father. In effect, the opinion of the Court has established that abor· tion-on·request is the public pol· icy of this nation. \ Despite attempts to do so, the Court has failed to justify its opinion on theological, historical or scientific grounds. To say that I'have long desired to have this opportunity to meet with you is to speak the truth. not just to utter a happy phrase bu eft of inner sincerHy. How
