JOHN O’GAUNT SCHOOL HEADS TO THE TOP

H

ungerford’s dynamic new John O’Gaunt School head teacher has outlined her case to drive her school to the forefront of district secondary education. In a forthright address to Hungerford Town Councillors on Monday, Sarah Brinkley said John O’Gaunt School was outstanding and she was aiming for outstanding results. She confirmed that she aimed to impove the school’s reputation and students would wear uniforms to be proud of. “We’ll do what’s right for our children and seek the right qualifications for the right jobs, bearing in mind that learning never finishes. “We need investment from the local authority and we need to invest to modernise”. She said teaching and learning were a priority and John O’Gaunt would be offering something different from other schools. It was a relatively small school and the aim was for outstanding education. Cr Roger Thompson said there

was a need for community connection and involvement with the school bearing in mind that Hungerford had over 80 organisations. There was also a need for the town’s employers to be involved. The mayor, Cr Martin Crane commented: “it’s our school and we have a great interest in it”.

R

TOWN TOURIST INITIATIVE

epresentatives of interested organisations were to meet at Hungerord’s Bear Hotel on Wednesday night to discuss a new town tourist initiative. Attendance was expected from Hungerford Town council, Hungerford Town and Manor, Hungerford Chamber of Commerce, Action for Market Towns and other interested people. On Monday night and again on Tuesday night, Hungerford Town councillors discussed the tourist initiative. The Mayor, Cr Martin Crane and Cr Martyn Hopkins emphasised the need for a joint town team to tackle tourism and enterprise. Continued on page 3 ...

KNIGHTS HOSPITALLER

D

espite the freezing weather, over 50 members of the Hungerford Historical Association were treated to a wonderful talk on the Knights Hospitaller (also known as the Knights of St John) by Dr Alan Borg, CBE. Dr Borg was previously Director of the Imperial War Museum, and later of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Dr Borg outlined how the Knights started by providing a hospital for pilgrims to Jerusalem in the 11th century, and how they had to move to Cyprus, then Rhodes before settling in Malta. In Victorian times the order was re-established in England, when the St John’s Ambulance was started. He covered 1000 years of its fascinating history in one hour - ending by encouraging us to visit the order’s London Museum in Clerkenwell. The next meeting of the Hungerford Historical Association will be on Wednesday, 27th February at 7.30pm when Froxfield resident Dr Chris Carlon will speak on “The Really Ancient History of Hungerford - reading and interpreting rock archives”. -Shelagh Parry

FUTURE OF CROFT FIELD

Council discussions are continuing about the future of The Croft Field. It has been suggested that Hungerford Town and Manor might lease it for wider community use.

NEW HOUSE SPRAYED WITH PAINT

Vandals on Tuesday night sprayed white paint on the four walls of a new house in Chilton Foliat. White foot prints on the pavement led toward Leverton Lane.

FASHION, COLOUR AND STYLE

EACH BELONG TO THE CLOTHES SHOP

T

he Clothes Shop has nestled quietly for nearly 30 years on the outside edge of Newbury’s town centre. During this time many people have discovered its hidden treasures, namely ladies’ clothes, hats and accessories without the high street labelling bringing more individuality for the customer. It has truly become a ‘destination shop’. Through its doors you will find a multitude of colours, styles and price ranges to suit every eventuality from doing the housework in practical crop trousers and seersucker shirts to going to the races at Ascot where a special outfit is required complete with hat, bag and jewellery. The Clothes Shop is a family run business where Ann and her daughter Deborah pride themselves on their personal service and are used to sorting out last minute problems of what to wear for a particular function and they are only too happy to guide people in their quest for the perfect outfit or hat. Among the most popular labels for this season are Tina Taylor suitable for all ages and occasions and Michaela Louisa, which have beautiful dresses. But they like to source new labels all the time, and this year they have introduced Nass C, Daisy May and Nati Jimenez to their cosmopolitan collections. Hats and fascinators have become a speciality with over 400 in stock to choose from to buy or hire. Special orders can be accommodated and fascinators in particular can be made in a variety of styles and in any colour. Handbags and jewellery are plentiful with an amazing array of designs again in many colours. One of the bonuses of this particular location is the easy street parking enabling people to pop in to see what the latest additions are to the ever tempting stock. For information please telephone 01635 47832 or better still, visit The Clothes Shop at 12 Pound Street or the website: www.theclothesshopnewbury.co.uk See advertisement on page 7.

01488 682328 TOWN TOURIST INITIATIVE Continued from cover ... They said a viable working committee was needed to take charge. Council was taking a leading role in attracting investment and pushing for electrification of the railway. However, there were some who appeared not to favour development and electrification. The town needed a clear directory to district tourist attractions with Hungerford as their centre. Research had already been caried out on requirements and attractions. In a period of declining town business, businesses should be encouraged to survive and new growth should be encouraged. Marlborough had a good blend of shops. Hungerford could benefit from more variety.

NOTES FROM MARLBOROUGH TOWN COUNCIL

Continued from cover ... Mrs Parker’s first day was described as a “Baptism of Fire” by Cllr Andy Ross, because she had already tackled budgets and advised on procedural changes for the Council, before attending three committee meetings that evening. The Finance and Policy Committee met to consider the proposed budget and to set the coming year’s budget requirements (precept). There was a detailed discussion about reduced income, projects that need funding, reserves and needing a better return on invested capital. The Committee generally agreed with the proposed increase in precept, although Cllr Stewart Dobson had hoped to keep it in line with last year, by reducing the budget for the town hall project. Councillors argued that the town hall needed a lot of work to improve its condition and they were reluctant to cut back on that element of the budget. The final recommendation was accepted at the full Town Council meeting, which followed. For Marlborough households this will mean an increase of 3.75% in the Town Council element of Council Tax: for a Band D property this is £4.54 per annum or 9 pence per week. - Shirley Pryor

STUDENT RACING TEAM SEEKS SPONSORS FOR ECO CHALLENGE Continued from cover... For the 2013 Eco Challenge St John’s has two teams. One group is working on further improvements to SJR1 and a second group has designed and is currently building a brand new car, SJR3. Using CAD and 1:5 scale models and a full size wooden mock-up, the new racer is still constructed from steel bars but is longer and much lower, wrapping around the driver to improve aerodynamics; as well as being much more accurately put together. The increase in planning has led to SJR3 going from first sketch to rolling chassis in less than four months. The team has also had to learn how to put together a business plan, and has now calculated the cost of entering the 2013 challenge. They are now hoping that local businesses will help them achieve their aim of entering both cars in the 2013 Challenge later this year. -Kate Hunter

STUDENT RACING TEAM SEEKS SPONSORS FOR ECO CHALLENGE

A

group of students who make up the St John’s Marlborough Racing Team are contacting local businesses in the hope of finding sponsors to enable them to compete in the Schools Eco Marathon, aiming to travel the furthest possible distance on the smallest amount of fuel. Matt Jones, 16, Dan Snipe, 16 and Euan Humphreys, 17, who have been team members for the last few years, under the supervision of Design & Technology teacher Mr Clive Stell, have written to local businesses asking for support to help them raise the £500 they need to compete in the challenge. The Racing Team is a group of young and enthusiastic engineers who are aiming to build a fuel efficient car to run in the 2013 Schools Eco Marathon on 18th June. The students have invested hundreds of hours of time and effort during their lunch breaks and after school. The club started in 2010 when a group of St John’s students went to Rockingham Raceway, where they learnt a lot about the materials used and the methods of construction, then went on to develop their first car, the St John’s Racer 1 (SJR1). The engine used was a 35cc Honda GX35 four stroke, similar to a strimmer engine, which provided about 1.3hp, more than enough to meet the required average speed of 15mph. The team drove the car at Mallory Park raceway in the Schools Eco Challenge 2011, even though the car was untested and completed just a few days before. The result was a maximum of 157 miles per gallon, which considering the challenges that had to be overcome, was a great success. To prepare for the 2012 Eco Challenge the team began to work on modifying “SJR1” to improve the vehicle’s mpg. up speed and then coast; some could even shut down and restart the engine while driving. Our approach to this tactic was to fit a bicycle freewheeling mechanism to the drive wheel and mount plastic bodywork onto the previously bare chassis. As a result of these changes we achieved a much improved 253 mpg in last year’s challenge. and on the day, with the assistance of some pizza boxes, gaffer tape and fine tuning, the economy of SJR1 shot up by more than 30 mpg to 287. We are really proud of our achievement which shows the progress the team has made as a group of young engineers, who are now more likely to pursue engineering in the future as a career”. 8/2/13 Be part of Avon’s Army of Volunteers! A war has been declared on non-native invasive species! You may not even have realised that we are being invaded. Such is the devious nature of our enemy. Help is at hand with Avon’s Army of Volunteers, but we still need more brave souls ready to fight the scourge of invasive species on our river. This dedicated, if disparate, group gathered its troops recently at Salisbury’s Guildhall to draw up their battle plans. Avon’s Army of Volunteers includes representatives from parish councils, landowners, charities such as Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts and even a representative from Bristol Zoo.

600 SIGN FOR ELECTRIFICATION 600 signatures had already been collected in favour of electrification of the Hungerford Railway line, Cr Alana Wilson told the last Hungerford Town Council meeting. This project funded by the Environment Agency as part of commitment to restore rivers, both physically and for The petition may be viewed and signed at Hungerford- their water quality. Town Council office. POTHOLE PROBLEM IN HUNGERFORD Cr Roger Thompson has drawn Hungerford Town Council’s attention to extensive potholes in the town, brought about in severe weather.

Leading the attack, Sam Stork, of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Source to Sea project said “Over the past months, local landowners have been helping us to reconnoitre, gather intel, and generally spy on our enemy, the invasive species. And now that we know who they are, and how many there are, we are ready to take the fight to them. We will fight them in the river. We will fight them on the river banks. We will not rest until the River Avon is cleared of non-native species again. This is our finest year. 2013 will go down in history as the year that Britons helped their wildlife fight back.” That intel – collected over 300km of the river - resulted in over 2000 records of harmful, non-native species currently invading our stunning river. It must be stopped before our wildlife suffers irreparable damage. That’s why Wiltshire, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Dorset Wildlife Trusts are asking you to volunteer. Help us to fight these invaders. Come out and work along our river, its tributaries, chalk streams and waterways. Be part of our Avon’s Army of Volunteers and turn back the tide of the invaders. They do not fight with guns, but with sweat, with gloved hands and waders on their legs. So far, 65 brave souls have stepped forward, representing parish and city councils, landowners, anglers, government bodies such as Natural England and the Environment Agency, the business community and ordinary people who care about the River Avon. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Sam Stork ended saying “This is our last chance. We either fight for the Avon or we lose part of our natural heritage that is currently struggling to survive. Like any good Army, we have a solid plan of action. What we need now are the troops, the volunteers to come out and help us fight.” -Kelly Barnett
