SCHOOL PLANS TO ‘INVOLVE ALL INTERESTED PARTIES’

H

ungerford Town Councillors have been assured that all interested parties will be involved in discussions over Hungerford John O’Gaunt School’s future. The assurance came from District Councillor James Podger in a report to councillors at their monthly meeting on Monday. Hungerford citizens have been expressing concern at revelations that a primary school element may be introduced at the John O’Gaunt School to the possible detriment of Hungerford Primary School. Some see suggestions for the JOG primary school as an emergency means to boost the school’s numbers. Cr Podger told councillors that Newbury education authorities were looking for positive solutions. He said people needed confidence to send their children to local schools. The JOG primary school news should be welcomed by councillors without scremongering. JOG principal Sarah Brinkley was continuing the previous good work to improve the JOG, Cr Podger said. The mayor Cr Martin Crane said there were a lot of legitimate reservations that did not involve scremongering. The school discusion prompted comments by Cr Podger involving Cr Alana Wilson.

Cr Wilson later told Cr Crane: “I am left feeling angry and upset after tonight’s meeting. “I feel James Podger’s comments about me and my personal life had no place in the meeting and his personal attack is out of order. “I also feel very let down by you, as chair of the meeting, for not stopping it and pointing out how inappropriate his actions were. “When we step into a council meeting I believe we should do it as professionally as possible. James had no right to discuss either mine or my daughter’s lives and he certainly had no right to bring up my preliminary application to be on the board of governors at the John O’ Gaunt School. This was not public knowledge and was not on the agenda for discussion. “I don’t believe any councillor should be subjected to that kind of behaviour and feel I am justified a public apology for his outburst”. -Regards Alana. Cr Crane replied: Alana: “I appreciate the depth of your feelings on this aspect of the discussion relating to the future of our schools and the manner in which District Cr Podger sought to justify the ‘decision’ taken by WBC. “His reference to your application to become a Governor of the JOG School is not untypical of a politician seeking to reinforce their view by raising associated facts. I suppose as he is in continuous talks with JOG this information became known to him by this route and I suppose that he took the view that it was therefore in the public domain. .... THE GENTLEMAN’S SHOP WEST BERKSHIRE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

H

ungerford’s The Gentleman’s Shop has won the inaugural West Berkshire Business Awards’ coveted grand title of Business of The Year 2013. The shop was one of four Hungerford businesses to win prestigious awards. Gentleman’s Shop prorietor Robert Johnson told The Adviser: “Friday 1st November saw the Inaugural West Berkshire Business Awards at Newbury Racecourse. The evening was attended by Richard Benyon MP and hosted by Thomas Plant of BBC’s Bargain Hunt. “I’m delighted to say that we won both the Newbury Business Improvement District Independent retail Award and the coveted grand title of Business Of The Year 2013. “This was especially significant as Charlotte and myself celebrated our Silver wedding last June and the 25th anniversary of the starting the business this week. “In the last twelve months we have developed a mobile version of our website, launched apps for Apple and Android platforms ready for the growth of 4G networks and have embraced the upturn in retail sales seen this year. Employment Opportunities

Save Time and Money when you employ local people! SCHOOLS PLANS TO ‘INVOLVE ALL INTERESTED PARTIES’

... Continued from cover. “I am afraid that we all have to understand that our district councillors are political animals in a political organisation that is the WBC. “This tactic is often seen in Parliament and I thought that you responded in a very effective manner and defused any advantage that DC Podger might have thought he would gain. Given this I would not expect him to climb down and apologise but I don’t blame you for seeking one. “It is clear that Hungerford has a major fight on our hands to resolve the future of both JOG and Primary school and I do not believe that our meeting scheduled for Wednesday will satisfy all attendees. “We need more statistics and look at the changing demographics of our town with a surge of pupils in our nursery schools and thus overcrowding the primary school, the suggestion/ proposal/decision is seemingly only a sticking plaster and does not address the overall requirements for educating our young. “We have known for a long time that JOG has a real problem in meeting the requirement to staff the 16 -18 year group of students and a form of sharing resources with those of schools in Newbury might yet be the only way of keeping the top level of education there. “It is equally obvious that we shall be needing another primary school and thus it is really a matter of financing this requirement that has led WBC to shift some of the primary students to the JOG site. This could be a cynical ploy to demonstrate the value of agreeing substantial housing developments in and around the town where the CIL would fund this school. “This subject is clearly one that offers an opportunity to take up your suggestion for a ‘drop in’ session though I suspect that we shall need to hold a full public meeting to air all views and gain some route to a consensus on this vital issue”. -Martin.

THE GENTLEMAN’S SHOP WEST BERKSHIRE BUSINESS OF THE YEAR ... Continued from cover. “With the opening of our new barber shop at No10, High St, Hungerford, 2013 really has been quite a year so far!” Hungerford award winners were: PBA Accountants, best small business award – Design Software Solutions; Newbury Racecourse tourism and cultural events award – The Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza; DovetailHRS; Newbury BID (Business Improvement District) best independent retail business – The Gentleman’s Shop, Hungerford, The Vineyard social media award – Perfectly Posh. Overall business of the year 2013 – The Gentleman’s Shop. Nigel Perrin commented: “As chairman of The Hungerford Chamber of Commerce it was great to watch five out of the nine awards go to Hungerford businesses, a gratifying reward for all the independent Hungerford businesses that work hard to make the town different and special. “Our award in the tourism section rightly recognises the hard work of not only the Chamber of Commerce in raising over £13k every year to make the event happen but especially the effort of all the hardworking Extravaganza committee and volunteers that make the event happen on the day - the award really is for them - and without which the event wouldn’t be the success it has been for 21 years”.

O

n Wednesday, 23rd October the Reverend David Bunney gave a most scholarly presentation to the Hungerford Historical Association on the impact of the Anglian Prayer Book on Hungerford churches. He traced the origins of the current United Reform Church in Hungerford back to 1662 when the Minister of St Lawrence, along with numerous other ministers nationwide, was expelled from his living by King Charles 11 and his Bishops. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 27th November at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange when Sir Max Hastings will talk on “1914”

LOCAL CHARITY DAY RAISES £300,000 FOR GOOD CAUSES

L

ocal charities are raising a toast this week to the organisers of The Hilldrop Charity Shoot. The event, organised and hosted by Tim Eliot-Cohen at Hilldrop Farm in Ramsbury back in May this year, saw around 1000 guests descend on the picturesque estate for a day’s shooting followed by a party with music, dancing, light shows and a charity auction. The day was supported by 120 volunteers, at least half of which came from Ramsbury and the charities that are now some of the net beneficiaries. The Shoot was described as one of the most entertaining, innovative and eccentric circuits in the country and amazingly, with 400 guests, is believed to be the largest charity shoot ever to be staged in this country. This is testament to the Hilldrop Clay Club and in particular Norman, Mark and Lee Roberts who orchestrated the day’s entertainment. However equally important were Ian Smith, Ed and Tim Pope, who averted the small disaster of having no electrics, all of which had burnt out, inferring no

dinner or entertainment for the 1000 evening guests. Tim and Ed were competing at the time and had to be virtually bought back at ‘gun point’ to sort it but sort it they did! What followed surely gets a nomination for the party of the century? This day made over £300,000 for good causes. The major beneficiary was Sightsavers, following a visit to Uganda by Tim where he saw the ‘minor miracles’ of children seeing for the first time. Indeed these funds will help 11,000 truly impoverished blind people who have no sight today but now might see tomorrow and with that they get a real chance in life. To put this into perspective this is the equivalent to the population of Ramsbury, Hungerford and a good part of Marlborough! However a portion of the money raised has been generously allocated to other charities, nominated by the Hilldrop committee. Local causes celebrating their windfall include The Ramsbury Scouts, Ramsbury Pre-School, the community facilities regeneration charity RAMPAIG, The Ramsbury PCC, the Church Rooms, Meals on Wheels, the Ramsbury Luncheon Club, The Recreation Centre and Action for the River Kennet. Other regional charities are also being handsomely supported. Amanda Fearon, Chair of RAMPAIG, said ‘the generosity of the gift was unexpected and would provide a real boost to our community projects- what a remarkable village this is!’ EST 1880

RABLEY WOOD DEVELOPMENT

L

ast week’s public exhibition in the town hall has raised hackles. The owners of Manton Estate propose to build houses on land belonging to Wiltshire Council at Rabley Wood, in exchange for giving a larger, adjacent, piece of land as a country park. Concerns, voiced by Mrs Baker before the council meeting, include disturbing contaminated waste buried there, inadequate emergency access, overloading of the GP facilities, sewerage system and schools and the loss of a community area. Mayor Guy Loosmore agreed, saying that the town council was asking the same questions and that it was not a “done deal”. - Shirley Pryor

CCTV - ONE TO WATCH

C

CTV for Marlborough came one step closer this week, when the town council voted to push ahead with the project. Last month, they heard presentations from four suppliers and are set to make a decision. However, prior to signing a contract, there will be a public consultation to gauge support for CCTV: whilst many are in favour, some are firmly against. Clr Kirk-Wilson was the lone dissenter in the vote. - Shirley Pryor
