wo new contemporary apartment blocks for older people have been officially opened in Hungerford. Sovereign Housing Association’s Redwood House and Lindley Lodge, which provide 74 affordable homes for older persons, were officially opened on Friday (30 May) in the presence of Sovereign’s Regional Director for Berkshire, Nicole Sharp, Cllr Jeff Beck, Chairman of West Berkshire Council and the former Mayor of Hungerford Cllr Martin Crane. The opening was marked by the Chair of Redwood and Lindley Residents’ Association, Brian Edwards, cutting a specially made cake. The new development consists of Lindley Lodge, which has 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent, and Redwood House, which has 46 one- and two-bedroom apartments for rent with extracare facilities and additional support services. Redwood House, the third extra-care scheme in West Berkshire, includes a restaurant, a kiosk shop and a hairdressing salon. The two modern apartment blocks sit on land previously occupied homes. “This is yet another example of how we are working closely with by the Priory and Platt Court, where there were 33 flats which were West Berkshire Council to upgrade older persons’ accommodation no longer fit for purpose. Nicole Sharp said: “It’s really pleasing to see how the residents across the district and to better meet a growing housing need.” Continued on page 3 ... of Redwood House and Lindley Lodge have settled into their new

NEW HUNGERFORD OLDER PERSONS’ HOMES OFFICIALLY OPENED ... Continued from cover. A positive aspect of the Redwood and Lindley is the thriving residents’ association, which is organising regular social events such as coffee mornings and bingo, and is planning to organise day trips and barbecues this summer. The group has raised £500 in recent weeks to support their activities. The secretary of the association is Betty Morrison, 71, who moved into a two-bedroom ground-floor apartment at Lindley Lodge after her husband, Ronald, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. “Community spirit is building,” said Betty, herself a former care scheme manager who has lived in Hungerford for 30 years. “People have come from different places, and we are starting make friendships with the other residents. Ronald loves it here. He mixes with other people and that’s great for both of us,” she said. In his speech, Cllr Beck mentioned the former district councillor for Hungerford, David Holtby, one of the champions of this development, who died last year and did not see it reach fruition: “He would have been extremely proud of what’s here today, and we owe him a great debt of gratitude for the effort he put in,” Cllr Beck said. He praised the work Sovereign had done in helping residents to settle in to their new apartments. “The standard of housing being provided here is one of the best I’m aware of. The council have worked very closely with Sovereign in partnership over a considerable period of time on the design and fitting out of the extra care elements of the scheme, to which the council made a very considerable financial and technical contribution. Speaking on behalf of Hungerford Town Council, Cllr Crane said: “It’s a great privilege to come here today. I was there when Sovereign presented their plans and I thought it was too good to be true. But it is true - they

Adviser 6_6_14_HUNG.indd 3

have actually fulfilled almost everything that they said they would do.” A highlight of the event was participants making willow art under the supervision of artist Angela Morley, who has been conducting willow workshops with residents over the past few weeks. Some of their willow sculptures now decorate the communal garden.

ASSURANCE OVER PLAYGROUND AREA

R

amsbury Drive and other residents have been assured that their playground area will not be lost to Hungerford Primary School traffic problems. Hungerford Town councillors on Monday were told of concerns after a report in The Hungerford and Marlborough Weekly Adviser. Fourteen residents attended Monday’s council meeting and they said they acknowledged the school’s set-down and parking problems. One resident suggested that it would be more healthy for parents able to do so, to walk their children to school. The problem of parents dropping off or picking up children and wanting to chat, was not helping . It was suggested that guidance should come from the school. Councillors assured residents they did not intend to interfere with the playground.

ST JOHN’S MARLBOROUGH - AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL

... (Continued from Cover) OFSTED chose a very busy two days for us including a Parents Evening, events for primary school pupils, and the last day in school for our Year 11s, all of which helped to show us at our best. To be found Outstanding in all areas is the very best outcome we could have wished for, and I am extremely proud of all staff and students at St John’s”. Dr Hazlewood, his leadership team and governors were described as sharing an ambitious vision for St John’s. The inspection team highlighted the new school building, planned and created by the team, which has resulted in an outstanding environment in which all can thrive. The report included comments from St John’s students. According to the report “Students are immensely proud of their school and clearly appreciate the care and attention which the staff give to them as individuals. In student interviews, when asked if they would recommend the school to others, Year 11 students commented “It’s the best in Wiltshire”. When asked what they would like to be improved, students said “Nothing – the school has everything worked out””. The Sixth Form at St John’s was also highlighted as being outstanding, with excellent teaching, outstanding personal support and appropriate study programmes that enable students to achieve highly and prepare them well for higher education and employment. Inspectors found difficulty in identifying anything that St John’s could do to improve. The full report is available on the OFSTED website www.ofsted. gov.uk -K. Hunter

oncern is again being expressed at “speeding” in Hungerford High Street. Liz Allen drew councillors’ attention to the problem in the public forum before Monday’s council meeting. A speed survey for the High Street will be sought from West Berkshire Council. Cr Roger Thompson commented that a proposal for a 20mph limit throughout Hungerford had been generally rejected.

HELPING THE DISTRICT

he Hungerford and Marlborough Weekly Advisers provide platforms for the people of the district to promote their services and wares. The Advisers are a commercial family venture offering promotional space at a price. The Adviser family works very hard to help your businesses and services and believes that in most cases service is successful. In the case of charities, we offer space at a 50% discount, bearing half the cost ourselves. We welcome input and comment on our services and regret that we are unable to provide free space other than for exceptional circumstances. For promotional space enquiries you are invited to contact adviser@universal-press.co.uk Tel. 01488 682328.

ST JOHN’S MARLBOROUGH - AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL

F

ollowing an OFSTED inspection on 8 and 9 May, Dr Patrick Hazlewood, Principal at St John’s Marlborough today announced that the school has been found to be Outstanding. In the report, released today, St John’s is described as a school “in which all may thrive and achieve to the highest standards”. The four areas of inspection; Achievement of pupils, Quality of teaching, Behaviour and safety of pupils, and Leadership and management were all found to be Outstanding. The OFSTED summary report states that at St John’s: • Achievement is outstanding because students in all year groups make rapid and sustained progress • Teaching is outstanding because teachers know their students, have high expectations and use their expert subject knowledge to motivate students to achieve their best • Students’ behaviour is outstanding. They are exceptionally proud of their school and they are universally polite and courteous towards each other, staff and visitors. They are proud of their new buildings and look after them exceptionally well. • Dr Hazlewood was praised by the inspection team and described as ‘visionary’, supported by a highly effective senior

team, middle leaders and an outstanding governing body. Throughout the two day inspection the team of inspectors observed 49 lessons, attended morning registrations and an assembly. The team also looked at students’ work and listened to a group of Year 7 students read, met with groups of students to discuss their views, held meetings with the governing body and staff, and took account of the responses to parent and staff questionnaires. Dr Hazlewood announced the outcome of the inspection to staff at a meeting today. He said: “We waited a long time for this inspection and the entire staff team was pleased to welcome the inspectors to St John’s and have the opportunity to demonstrate what a great school this is. ...
