ales and West Utilities, the company reportedly responsible for Hungerford’s main street essential gas pipe replacement works reports the work is scheduled to end today. The works have continued for several months with several unforeseen hold-ups. They were scheduled to end on July 11 and then an extension was gained until the end of July.

A spokesman for Wales and West Utilities confirmed this week’s end date of today, Friday, August 5. Hungerford trade has been severely restricted and compensation is reportedly being sought. Estimated figures range toward £1.5million.

EXCITING LIFE

W

BY

CHAPMAN PINCHER

HOW I BECAME THE ‘SPY MAN’

hen I entered Fleet Street as a specialist writer on Defence and Scientific issues, in 1946, I quickly discovered that the other specialists, such as the Political, Diplomatic and Crime reporters, guarded their turf most jealously, fiercely resting any intrusion. Spies had always been classed as criminals and were dealt with by the Crime Reporter. So, when the first atomic spy, Alan May, was exposed in 1946, my contribution was restricted to a few comments. In 1950, however, when Klaus Fuchs, the ex-German scientist who had worked on the atomic bomb, was also arrested as a Russian spy, the Crime Reporter asked me to cover the Old Bailey trial because he thought it beyond his expertise as much of the evidence would be technical. I leapt at the chance. Attending the Old Bailey itself was exciting and, using information supplied by friends in the Harwell atomic research station, I produced a frontpage account head-lined ‘Fuchs Gave Bomb to Russia’, which turned out to be entirely true. I had discovered that some of Fuchs’ calculations had been declassified and had obtained copies which illustrated my report. The Editor was so pleased that, from then on, I was, also, the newspaper’s spy-man which kept me busy for there was soon a spate of Russian ‘Cold War’ spy cases from Maclean, Burgess, Philby, Cairncross, Blunt, Houghton, Londsale, Vassall and Blake, to the GCHQ traitor, Geoffrey Prime and others. Eventually I became the only journalist to have covered them all as they occurred. The major fascination for me has been to discover why highly intelligent men, often from privileged backgrounds, could have been induced to risk everything in support of a far-away foreign country so obviously run by a vicious dictator. Piecing together the evidence, most of which has been held tightly secret, has been like constructing a giant jigsaw puzzle with most of the pieces hidden in officially inaccessible places. They continue to reach

me from various sources, some Russian, and any day that produces a real ‘nugget’ increases my determination. My biggest break in the espionage field was being introduced, in 1980, to the former MI5 officer, Peter Wright, who had retired to Tasmania on a miserable pension and was determined to spill all his secrets to make some money. Knowing that he could not be extradited for trial under the Official Secrets Act, which he had signed, he told me so much in the nine days I spent with him in his shack of a home that I was able to write a book under a 50/50 royalties deal called Their Trade is Treachery. Unknown to me, the Government, then led by Margaret Thatcher, secured an advance copy of the script and were so shocked by it that they wanted it suppressed. Their main concern was my revelation that a former Director General of MI5, Sir Roger Hollis, had been so deeply suspected of being a Soviet agent by his own officers that he had been recalled from retirement for interrogation. To Mrs Thatcher’s surprise, MI5 decided that it was safer for them to permit publication because, if I fought the decision in court, they would have to make too many damaging admissions! The book was an instant best-seller, causing a furore in Parliament, and has led to many publicly beneficial changes both in official secrets law and the practice of MI5 and other secret services. I have followed it up since with four more revelatory ‘spy books’. Though both I and my subject are now rather ancient, I press on with my inquiries. Some describe it as an obsession. They may be right.

know I have written previously about the changes in Hungerford and I always receive reader approval and quite often the comment....”you missed..... or had you forgotten...” Well now: let us all think about demolished buildings and there is a

pretty lengthy list. So, starting at the bottom of the town: Undy farm buildings including the house, the gas works and gasometer, Bennets’ tractor works, all four petrol stations on the A4 demolished and re-built and now only two selling petrol.. Middleton’s Yard which became J.T. Gibbs’s Yard, Barr’s Timber Yard buildings, although the huge crane remains and perhaps the most obvious demolition that of Bath Road Weslean Church in 1971 and for myself most interesting as I am the only surviving trustee of that building, and of course the change from fire station to shop. Move into Bridge Street. Three major changes, Caswell’s blacksmith shop in The Forge, the Barley Mow pub now Peter Stirland’s garage and showroom and a huge change from Wooldridge’s large builders’ yard and canal wharf replaced by a pleasant canal-side housing development. In the High Street, north of the railway bridge here the demolition of the manor house was followed by a petrol station which was in turn demolished to be followed by Gateway grocery store and now there have been two further changes! Now comes the biggest change of all, the disappearance of the old brewery/laundry buildings, wheat small factory, the county council yard all to be replaced firstly by Somerfield and now Tesco. A few yards further east and the regrettable demolition of the railway station, all its buildings and two signal boxes very adjacent Alexander’s coalyard offices and who remembers the Beards’ small coal office where now stands the disused St John’s building? *To be continued

ear 9 Textiles students at Hungerford’s John O’Gaunt School have been looking at ways to make sustainable clothing. The definition of sustainable is to make a product that has little or no negative impact on the environment and the health and wellbeing of the workers that make the product. Students had to create their own fabric from previously used materials. This was used to make skirts, which were modelled at the Eco Chic Fashion show. The quality and variety of skirts produced was truly amazing. The most unusual had to be Molly Osborne’s skirt, which was made from her favourite old comics encased in plastic wallets. It was stylishly finished with scarlet ribbon and net. Rosie Tuttle modelled her layered skirt, which was made from fabrics taken from old denim and linen skirts. The waistband was appliquéd from fabric scraps and was very eye catching. Connie Angel modelled Georgia Robinson’s garment; the underskirt was made from patched and pieced vintage fabrics over-layered with shop bought net in pink and white. This was an excellent example of combining old and new fabrics to create a unique garment. Bryony Burrows gathered orange check skirt was made from her grandfather’s old tablecloth; it was puffed out by layers of brown netting which was used as an underskirt and the waistband was made from scrap gold coloured silk. The whole skirt collection was well received by visitors to the show. Special thanks to our models for the event – Rosie Tuttle, Connie Angell, Bryony Burrows, Amber Marshall, Sinead Graham, Tanya Canning, Olivia Sandys-Lumsdaine, Ashleigh Pearce, Sky Caves,Molly Osborne and Holly McMordie.

World Web News RETAILERS MEETING UPDATE

J

ust a quick up date following on from the Retailers Meeting last month. Road Works – High Street still due to finish week ending 30th July (as per Wales & West yesterday), we will see! There are a further five weeks of disruption to follow at the Southern end of the High Street, opposite Atherton Crescent, at some point. We are still awaiting a date on this and Nigel Perrin is keeping on top of this and as soon as this date is know it’ll be passed on. Tourist Information – First the boards on the library, Jenny Booth has been doing a lot of work getting the details, contacts etc and a meeting is taking place on August 11th to attempt to get Hungerford information on them, so we’ll update you asap. Anthony Buckwell will be Chairing a working party which is a joint venture between the Chamber of Commerce, Town Council and Town and Manor looking at improving tourist facilities’. However in the meantime the Chamber and Sugar Mouse have joined “forces” (must be a better word, but can’t think of it!) and will be providing a Tourist Information Point in Sugar Mouse. The space to accommodate this is being provided free of charge and the Chamber are providing and funding the display fixtures and signage. So what we need now is as much information as possible to put there, if your a B&B/Hotel etc please do supply us with any advertising material you have (tourist will have access to the phone in Sugar Mouse to check vacancies etc). Basically any information that is Hungerford related is most welcome, if you can’t get down to the shop just let me know and I’ll collect the info’ later this week. It’s planned to have this up and running by the end of this week for the start of the main tourist season. Welcome for Hero’s – Robert Johnston is currently on holiday, updates will follow asap. Just for your info – for those that haven’t yet heard the planning application for the budget hotel has been granted on appeal – Ben Blake

NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR JOG

H

ungerford’s John O’Gaunt Community Technology College has received national recognition, headteacher, Neil Spurdell reports in the school’s magazine. Mr Spurdell said: “It is extremely important that the school is recognised within the community and has the support from Hungerford locals in particular, but recently, we received national recognition for the improvements that we have made at John O’Gaunt. On the strength of last year’s GCSE results, we can now proudly boast to be the most improved secondary school in the South East from 2009 - 2010 and, perhaps even more impressively, the most improved school covering an even greater region over the period 2007-2010. This is testament to the hard work of the students and staff we have within the school and having made such enormous strides, we are determined to maintain and build upon the levels we have reached”. 22.6.11

PLANNING REQUEST CLARIFICATION SOUGHT A planning request by Mr T. Hunter of Hungerford Park Estate has been referred back to the West Berkshire planning officer for further information. The last meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee considered an application to alter conditions. However, it was not clear what conditions were being referred to. Cr David Liddiard commented that referal back to West Berks could mean they would be old men by the time the answer arrived because the BBC had branded West Berks planning department the slowest in the land.

£600 FOR ROUND TABLE CARNIVAL Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee has recommended that £600 be made available to Hungerford Round Table for its Hungerford Carnival work. The last committee meeting was told there had been a misunderstanding and the money had not been earlier allocated. It was stressed that the council money should be used for the carnival and not to be passed on as a charitable donation. 7.7.11

WORLD’S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING To the Editor -

As you may already know, here at Macmillan Cancer Support we are currently in the process of promoting our flagship event, World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September 2011. We hope to get as many people as possible from Wiltshire to register to hold their own event in the coming months. I have attached an official poster for the event as well as a press release describing what it’s all about – would it be possible for your publication to print one or both in an upcoming edition? Any help and publicity would be greatly appreciated and please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you.
