fter 400 years, Hungerford Town and Manor, one of the oldest of the English Charities, is to appoint a full time Chief Executive. Ellie Dickins, the Constable (the Chairman of

the Trustees), told the Adviser: “The burden of responsibilities upon charities is growing by the year. The Town and Manor is responsible for the management and administration of 400 acres of land in and around Hungerford, including Hungerford Connued on page 2

est Berkshire Council’s playground services department will be approached by Hungerford Town Council for expert advice on its playgrounds and establishment of a new Hungerford playpark. The council’s recreation, amenities and war memorials committee made this decision at its meeting on Tuesday night. The meeting was told there were financial limitations involved.

delighted with our new outstanding status. It is a true reflection of the commitment, care and dedication of everyone involved in St Michael’s - the staff team, our volunteers, the governors and of course the children themselves. Our school is a very special place and I am proud to be the Headteacher”. Simon Knighton, Chair of Governors congratulated everyone involved with this excellent result ‘The school has a fantastic team and our children have been achieving excellent results over the last few years in a happy learning environment. We are proud of them and the way that everyone has been prepared to try out new ideas such as our daily runs and the Forest Schools initiative. This also impressed OFSTED on their recent inspection and I am very pleased that our school is now recognised as amongst the best in the country.’ -Nadia Aylett

In particular what they saw of the children themselves impressed them. Further details and the full OFSTED report can be found at www.stmichaelsaldbourne. co.uk; The report will also be available on the OFSTED website from 14th September. Out of 1356 primaries inspected from 1st Sept 2015 to 31st March 2016 only 7% got outstanding (source: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/maintainedschools-and-academies-inspections-and-outcomes-asat-31-march-2016). The achievement of OFSTED ‘outstanding’ status is a reflection of the incredible effort the teaching team and volunteers put in every day over many years under Judith Arkwright’s leadership and means that the school is in the highest category of primary schools nationally; Governors and staff are understandably delighted by this achievement which will also have a profoundly beneficial effect upon the wider Aldbourne community. It’s wonderful to be able to start the new academic ungerford Town Council’s highways and year by sharing this fantastic news. The Governors transport committee has asked people want to specially congratulate the staff team and interested in joining the police speedwatch parents who continue to support the school and make scheme to contact the council office. The scheme it the special, outstanding place it truly is. involves a course and is designed to help police to Headteacher, Judith Arkwright, said ‘I am absolutely reduce speeding.

We are also responsible for the annual Hocktide celebrations which attract visitors from all over the UK and, through the Press and television, lots of interest from abroad. The Town and Manor also supports many local charities and events. “The time has now come when we need to reduce the increasing burden on our Trustees and appoint a dedicated Chief Executive. HERE AND NOW in HUNGERFORD

OUR LIBRARY

As this edition goes to the press, the WBC plans for the library service will have been released for a period of 6 weeks consultation. Within this document, Hungerford Newbury to retain professional librarians. But only if work load. Although Hungerford has a great record of those posts in the library will surely stretch our resources to the limit. However the formation of the ‘Friends’ has shown that there is a strong undercurrent of support to maintain this vital facility, now we must translate this into reality. The task starts today.

NEW HOMES FOR HUNGERFORD

Whilst we await the announcement by the Planning Inspector about the provision of new housing for our town, there have been signs that seem to weigh in favour of the proposals put forward by your Council. These were to use a number of sites around the town rather than one major development to the south of town. One of these smaller sites is in our plan to regenerate the Station area but currently WBC regard this as a Protected Employment area and as such, their policy precludes building homes there. This policy has recently been abandoned for the major housing development in Newbury on the former Travis Perkins site. So can the interested developers for our station location, be given the same green light?

OUR CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Pledge letters have been delivered around the town to companies and early indications show some promise of raising funds. However because of the large increase in costs, it has been necessary to restrict our trees and lights to Bridge and High Streets only. But the display will still be the usual stunning attraction; switched on by the legendary jockey, Sir A.P.McCoy. this can be done either individually or as a group, please pick up a YELLOW PLEDGE FORM Another ‘pledge’ that you may consider, is to help dress the trees in advance of their placement. The more that this work can be done by volunteers, the greater the saving on costs!

A MAJOR BOOST FOR TOURISM

Your Council has been working with other councils along the A4 corridor to create a Tourist Route aimed at syphoning would be tourists from the M4. Piloting this proposal has been the ‘Visit Wiltshire’ team who have now research. This will include using specialist companies to identify both the attractions and the problems in building workable itineraries that can be marketed through overseas Travel Agencies. As this project builds momentum, it is hoped that investors will seize the opportunity to provide more accommodation along the route. Hungerford may even obtain another hotel?

- Cllr Mar tin Crane, OBE, Town Mayor of Hungerford

ROTARY NOTES

recent guest speaker was Alan Henderson, Headteacher at John O’Gaunt School. His subject was “My First Year and the Year

Ahead”. He told us that he inherited a school with poor GCSE results, falling student numbers, loss of a sixth form, disastrous finances, poor staff recruitment and retention, disappointing student behaviour and aspirations, and an historic poor perception of the school in Hungerford. He took the job to accept the challenge of turning things round. The school now has a new library, good sports facilities, new science labs, a great bunch of students and dedicated staff with a desire to succeed. The students have just achieved the best exams results ever at J.O.G. with a 79% pass rate in English, 74% in Maths, and 66% grades A* to C in English and Maths. Alan agreed with recent comment that the “hardest thing about winning is to win again”, but the school is in a better place than it was 12 months ago. Students’ numbers are currently 340 and the target is to increase to 600 with everyone working together to improve standards. With effect from the beginning of this month the school has converted to academy status, joining with St John’s Marlborough in the Excalibur Academies Trust. After questions, Alan Henderson was thanked by Tony Cornick. -Robin Dudney

DOCTOR STARTS DREAM JOB AT JOG He said: “I am so excited to be a teacher at JOG. This is a brilliant school with enthusiasm, a wonderful community and high ambitions. My education will be a help but I love now to be able to pass on my own passion for science to hundreds more children.” -Shane Christian Dean

MP WELCOMES NEWS THAT PLANS FOR URGENT CARE CENTRE ARE MOVING FORWARD

C

doctor has quit his profession to start his new dream job as a science teacher in the highflying John O’ Gaunt. Dr James Owens is already loving the role at JOG which has just celebrated record ever GCSE results and a new Academy partnership with the exceptional Excalibur Academies Trust. Dr Owens studied for six years at the University of Southampton and has a Degree in Clinical Medicine. He has been teaching for three years before taking up the role at JOG. He was inspired into his new job by remembering how his own science teachers had given him a love for the subjects.

laire Perry MP is delighted by the news that the planning application for the new Devizes Urgent Care Centre should be submitted by the end of November. This represents the next step in the journey to improve local healthcare provision, and follows years of campaigning by Claire, and many other local people to repair the damage done by the closure of all the Minor Injuries Units in the Constituency. Commenting on the news, Claire Perry said: “After the years of campaigning I am thrilled that the planning application for the Urgent Care Centre is to be submitted by the end of November. Huge thanks go to everyone who has worked so hard to get to this stage - at last the people of Devizes and surrounding villages are a step closer to getting the healthcare services they need, and I know we are all determined to make this a reality.”

HISTORIC DAY FOR THE ALDBOURNE BAND

O

n Saturday 8th October the Aldbourne Band competed in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall. They finished in a marvellous 9th place out of 20 bands, achieving their highest ever position in this competition in their 156 year history. Accompanying the band and their families was a separate coach of supporters from the village who heard the band’s stunning performance of the test piece “The Journey of the Lone Wolf” under the musical direction of David Johnson. It was an historic day for band members and supporters alike, one which will be remembered for many years. The village band is the highest ranking amateur brass band in Great Britain. The Aldbourne Band are next in public the weekend of 21st – 23rd October when they will be hosting a Conductor’s Course, again under the direction of MD

David Johnson. On the Sunday afternoon at 5pm in St. Michael’s Church, Aldbourne there will be an end of course concert when all 8 attendees will introduce and conduct a piece they have been studying over the weekend. Tickets are £5 for adults with children free and will be available at the door. Wine and soft drinks will also be served. -Janet Roe.
