COUNCIL COMMITTEE REVERSES GARDEN ART PROJECT DECISION ... Continued from cover. Monday’s meeting was addressed by Garden Art representatives who outlined meticulous planning. They said there had been liaison with West Berkshire planners, Hungerford Town Council and Hungerford Chamber of Commerce with encouraging response. Co-proprietor of Garden Art Travers Nettleton said their object was to bring more people into Hungerford to benefit the town and themselves. Mrs Nettleton said “we want the whole gateway to be beneficial to Hungerford”. Questions were asked by Crs Hudson and Farrell relating to parking and development. Cr Holmes moved that the project be approved. Cr Hudson seconded by Cr Farrell moved an amendment to approve the development with various provisos. This amendment was defeated and Cr Holmes successfully moved the committee’s direct approval of the project.

WEST BERKSHIRE SUPPORTS YOUTH CLUB EXERCISE FACILITY

H

ungerford mayor Cr Martin Crane has hailed West Berkshire Council’s action to co-operate to facilitate Hungerford youth club’s use of adjacent tennis courts. Cr Crane said the decision to make appropriate variation of the current building lease was a great result facilitated by the positive action of head of John O’ Gaunt School Sarah Brinkley.

TAKE ON THE BRITISH 10K AND RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR BRENDONCARE

The Hungerford/Marlborough Adviser, Friday, June 14 to 21, 2013

ADVISER

Employment Opportunities

T

he British 10k takes place on Sunday 14 July 2013 through the heart of central London. Brendoncare has a limited number of places up for grabs – why not take on the British 10k for Brendoncare and raise vital funds for the care of older people? The British 10k passes many of the capital’s truly world class historic landmarks, including Big Ben, The London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square and Westminster Abbey. This year’s run has a record number of entries. Brendoncare is looking for runners to fill its limited free charity places and raise a minimum of £150 to help care for older people. Or better still, if you have secured your own place in the run why not put the hard work and training to good use and raise money for a good cause as well? Brendoncare is dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people. Care is at the heart of all it does. Brendoncare has a reputation for excellence in care and constantly strives to maintain this. Its aim always is to provide happiness, fulfilment and independence – whether this be through its 10 dedicated care centres or its network of over 60 social clubs providing fun, friendship and support for older people. Ron Staker, Chief Executive of Brendoncare says “Runners can be assured that any funds raised will be put to good use - whether to buy essential equipment or refurbish a room in one of our Care Centres, or to keep one of our vital activity clubs going, which can be a real lifeline for lonely and isolated older people.” To book your place on the British 10k for Brendoncare please contact Lisa Fletcher at lfletcher@brendoncare.org.uk or call 01962 857090. Brendoncare’s mission is to care for older people with dignity and respect, providing care for life in care centres, and tackling social isolation through friendship and well-being clubs. Registered Charity no. 326508.

AUTHOR OF BESTSELLING BOOK ‘DEAR LUPIN’ TO GIVE A TALK

T

he Hungerford Bookshop has re-arranged the date to hear Charlie Mortimer talk about his hit book ‘Dear Lupin’. The book is a collection of letters from his father, racing journalist Roger Mortimer (who used to live locally) to his son, Charlie. Nostalgic, witty and filled with characters and situations that people of all ages will recognise, the letters span 25 years and are packed with anecdotes and sharp observations, with a unique analogy for each and every scrape Charlie Mortimer got himself into. Charlie will be talking about his book, and his sister’s book ‘Dear Lumpy’ followed by questions and a booksigning at The Croft Hall Hungerford on Wednesday June 26th at 7pm. Tickets are available from the bookshop (01488 683480)

MANTONFEST TO ROCK AGAIN

... Continued from cover Music Director Stuart Whant said the event was ‘all about putting the fun back in fundraising.’ Mantonfest 2013 will be ‘small enough to be intimate, but big enough to be professional.’ Tickets in advance are on sale now at a modest £10 for a single Adult, half price for Children under 12 and free for the under 5’s. To buy tickets or for more information contact festival organiser Roger Grant on (01672) 516235, or visit www.mantonfest.co.uk. Alternatively, you can purchase tickets from Sound Knowledge record store in Hughenden Yard, Marlborough. Prices will go up on the day. Whilst being unable to control the weather, one thing Mantonfest 2013 can promise is a thriving atmosphere, with a sense of togetherness and enjoyment right in the heart of picturesque Wiltshire, with the ‘rockability’ factor for all ages and tastes. Mantonfest is diversity all in the name of charity, and one date not to be missed in this summer’s calendar. -Arthur Russell

MANTONFEST TO ROCK AGAIN

A

fter fantastic support and praise last year, organisers have proudly announced that Wiltshire’s favourite community music festival is returning once again. Mantonfest is back; bigger and better than ever before. Despite last year’s festival being somewhat hampered by the treacherous English summer, this year’s event is catering for all types of spectator and weather conditions. Music lovers will be treated to a wider host of talented artists and bands, all with Wiltshire connections, including sets of blues, indie, pop, rock covers and original material. This year’s Mantonfest will take place on Saturday 29th June, at the Manton Grange water meadows in Preshute Lane and will run from 12

noon through to 10.30pm. The festival will be compered by BBC Radio Wiltshire, all in the aid of charity; the festival is supporting the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and the Manton Village Hall. Official sponsors of the event include: Barbury International, Manton Grange Estate and Marlborough Town Council. Festival goers will be treated to a healthy selection of ales and soft drinks. Also on offer is a Hog Roast, Pimms tent, a bouncy castle for the children, Burger Bar, free car parking and people are permitted to bring their own picnic baskets. Twelve acts have been confirmed, with some familiar favourites included such as the stunning voice of young Jo Peskett, folk artists ‘The Yirdbards’, the popular ‘Skedaddle’ and last year’s headliners Straight Six, all returning. Fresh faces can be seen in the additions of Swindon’s finest ‘Josie and the Outlaw’, who describe themselves as a ‘rock’n roll’ package, filled with ‘a whole lot of soul’. The uniquely admirable folk, gospel and rock inspired ‘Mother’s Jam’ satisfies the feminists, with their ‘Acapella’based group of six real life mothers. The experienced Indie Pop band, the ‘NewQuay Times’, and American Punk Rock tribute band ‘All Cramped Up’ have also been added to the list of talent on show. The event has been in high demand, with organisers having to turn away bands requesting a playing slot. Continued on page 5 ...

World Web News Marlborough Town Council Two hours and 25 agenda items made for a daunting first meeting of the new Town Council. Before the meeting, Sgt Vincent Logue, who will be leaving the town, gave his last crime report. Sgt Barry Reed will be taking over the post. Mayor Guy Loosmore welcomed new councillors and expressed his hope that all would work together in a positive way. Much of the meeting dealt with policy and procedure and councillors elected to serve on the Standing Committees. All councillors will serve on two committees, as well as Planning and full Town Council. The mayor attends all committees. The only contentious items related to the High St: cycle racks and electrical points. Ann Yates, of Transition Marlborough, was invited to speak on the former, which is an Area Board project to install extra cycle racks when the road is resurfaced this summer. The existing racks, at either end of the High St, are unsuitable for many types of cycle; the proposed racks would suit all and be placed more centrally. Several councillors spoke against this because it would use up a free 30 minute parking space on each side of the street. The Council voted 8-4 against the proposal, but recommended that the existing racks be replaced by new, suitable ones (like those behind Waitrose) and that signage is installed to show cyclists where to park. Councillors decided that there were too many unknown factors relating to electrical points, including cost of installation, whether the town’s electrical supply would need to be upgraded and how users would pay for electricity used. However, they agreed that, as funds were available from the Area Board, ducting should be installed this summer, to allow for further works in the future. The Town Council is still short of two councillors and is looking to co-opt. If you are interested in serving on the council, contact Town Clerk, Shelley Parker, for details. The closing date is 14 June and, after listening to presentations from candidates, councillors will vote for their chosen candidates at the next Town Council meeting on 24 June.

Hungerford RFC hunts new players for 2013/14 season The Hungerford Hurricanes are on the hunt for new talent this summer. Buoyed by a promising 2012/13 season, the club wants to recruit more players to strengthen their squad before their 2013/14 campaign gets under way in September. Before Christmas Hungerford RFC were languishing at the bottom of the Berks, Bucks and Oxon premier league, but seven straight wins after New Year saw them finish up a respectable fifth out of 11. Dave Smith, Hungerford’s head coach, said: “What last season showed was that with a bit of belief we could be a decent side. “It instilled belief throughout the club, and it got us thinking: ‘We don’t want to be in this league forever. We want to progress.’ “But to do that we need more players. It’s not rocket science: by beefing up our juniors, colts and second team, we’ll put healthy pressure on our first team players to perform at their very best. “So, regardless of whether you’ve never played before or if you’re a former British & Irish Lion, if you want to be a part of a family-based club with great banter and a passion for fun, flowing rugby, we’d love to see you.” Pre-season fitness training for the senior players starts at 7pm on June 11 at the Triangle field, Priory Road, Hungerford. Touch rugby is being played from 7pm on Thursdays throughout the summer. Check the Hungerford RFC website for details.
