ember for Devizes Claire Perry met the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, to discuss the importance of maintaining high speed rail links in Hampshire and Wiltshire and the case for electrifying the Great Western Main Line beyond Newbury to Hungerford and Bedwyn. After the meeting Claire said: “The Government is investing heavily in our rail network which is great to see and the Secretary of State clearly understands the economic case for extending electrification to Bedwyn and that it makes complete sense to do the work sooner rather than later. “He is also thankfully fully aware of the need for and importance of high speed frequent services from Pewsey and Bedwyn, especially to and from London. I was encouraged by the meeting and will keep fighting to protect our vital train services”, Claire Perry told the Adviser.

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS DISCUSSED

H

ungerford inward investment and Hungerford Railway Station regeneration project were subjects of Hungerford Town Council committee discussion on Monday night. The council’s tourist and economy committee was told that Hungerford had high-tech. investment potential and spare capacity at Charnham Park for large and small units. The potential was for established and start-up companies and the problem was to get the word out nationally and internationally. Hungerford’s John O’Gaunt School and other educational establishments could be involved in providing skilled employees. STATION PROJECT The council’s environment and planning committee heard that Network Rail and Oakes Bros. were discussing the ransom strip question. It was suggested that a working group involving all interested parties and Hungerford Chamber of Commerce be formed to take the project forward when the problem was resolved. It was important to follow an overall plan for regenertion, the meeting was told.

ADVISER Community ∏îâON MARLBOROUGH TOWN COUNCIL

M

ayor Mrs Marian Hannaford Dobson chaired the first full town council meeting of her mayoral year on Monday 2nd June. In her announcements, the mayor reminded everyone that the judging for Marlborough in Bloom (our entry into Britain in Bloom) will take place on 8th July. She encouraged shops and homeowners to help make the town look as beautiful as possible, to complement the work by the council’s estates team. Before the meeting, Sgt Barry Reed gave his final report on crime and policing, saying that crime figures in the area continued to fall and that Operation Banning, which targets anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, was proving a success. He gave credit to PC David Tippetts for his work on this. The mayor gave “a big thank you” to Sgt Reed, who is transferring to Swindon, and welcomed Sgt Clare Wallace, who is moving to Marlborough from Salisbury. As this was the first meeting of the council’s year, much of the agenda focused on business issues: adopting standing orders and financial regulations, adopting policies and procedures and appointing auditors. Another task was electing the membership of the various committees which, apart from Planning, have up to eight councillors each. The Finance and Policy Committee was oversubscribed, so councillors held a ballot to select the eight members; Cllr Andy Ross continues as chair. Cllr Mervyn Hall is the new chair of the Planning Committee, which comprises all town councillors. Cllr Noel Barrett-Morton will chair the Property Committee again; Cllr Guy Loosmore is the new chair of Amenities and Open Spaces and Cllr Peggy Dow continues as chair of the Staffing sub-committee. The town council also appoints representatives to outside bodies and voluntary groups in the town. Some of these groups had become top-heavy with council reps, so time was spent reducing these to more manageable numbers of just one or two. With hot topics such as Stonebridge Meadow management committee, there was some debate about whether to continue with existing councillor reps, Cllr Bryan Castle and Cllr Margaret Rose, or to inject “new blood” with Cllr Stewart Dobson. Councillors voted by a narrow margin to maintain the status quo. - Shirley Pryor

HUNGERFORD IN BLOOM

Councillor Margaret Wilson has drawn attention to Hungerford in Bloom judging which will take place on June 28.

A

SWING RIOTS IN HUNGERFORD 1830

group of volunteers from the Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading entertained over 70 members and guests of the Hungerford Historical Association to a dramatic presentation of events in 1830 when agricultural labourers fought against new threshing machines which made them unemployed. The rioters were also demonstrating for a living wage and to improve their living conditions. The riot was eventually supressed and one rioter was executed whilst the others were transported to Australia. The next meeting of the Hungerford Historical Association will be the AGM on Wednesday, 25th June at 7.30pm in Hungerford Corn Exchange. -Shelagh Parry

COMMUNITY CLEAR UP

M

arlborough’s Deputy Mayor, Margaret Rose, is inviting people to help with the second clear up of overgrown graves in the Old Cemetery at the Common, this Sunday, 15th June from 10 a.m. Volunteers will need gloves, stout footwear and a drink. Some tools will be provided, but it will help if you can bring your own shears, secateurs etc. The town’s cemeteries are likely to be on the route when Royal Horticultural Society judges visit the town as part of the South West in Bloom regional competition. Marlborough in Bloom Judging day for Marlborough’s first entry into South West in Bloom will be Tuesday 8th July. The MiB committee (representatives from groups in the town and the town council) has worked out a route for the judges to take and is now compiling a brochure. It’s not just about flowers: judging criteria cover three core elements - horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation. Sustainability, recycling, conservation, reducing litter and graffiti and developing green space all count towards achieving the best marks. The competition is for the whole community – businesses, shops, community and voluntary groups, local authorities and residents. It’s a chance to “clean up and green up” to showcase the very best of the town. Schools are being encouraged to enter a painting competition under a Poppies theme. Details of the route will be issued soon and will include parts of the High Street, the Common, the Green, allotments, meadows and more. Judges will talk to some of the volunteers who have worked hard to make our outside space special. We can all help by keeping gardens tidy and the town litter-free. The Food and Drink Festival on the Common in May was a great success, despite the weather, and organisers have provisionally booked 16-17 May, next year, to come again. No, again, to 64-bed development Marlborough town councillors again objected to the proposed development of a 64-bed care home and 28 assisted living units at the former Wiltshire Council Highway Depot on Salisbury Road. They are still dissatisfied with access and parking provision and are concerned that infrastructure is inadequate, particularly sewage and storm water drainage from the site. Plans show a cycle path, but are not clear how this will be joined in to the existing route. A proper ground survey will be needed to check for likely contamination. - Shirley Pryor
