REUNION

BY JOHN CAMERON-HAYES

I

don’t intend to start writing my column again but readers have questioned why I have failed in recent months to report my tales of daring do in the articles which I once wrote for the Adviser. I remind you that my weekly column appeared one hundred and fifty seven times ; and I was able to make you aware, without boasting , that I had served boldly and bravely brandishing my sword in many campaigns for Queen and Country, and felt you needed no further evidence of my bravery, courage and audacity. However, in spite of my gallantry no award was pinned to my chest ; so in order to maintain my stature I manufactured an array of medals with the help of my friend – a farrier , and a young lady who cut up some designer material to provide the medal ribbons. Although I have felt unrewarded for my courageous exploits , there has now come a time for my valour and intrepidity to be acclaimed. So I must declare that The First Lady and I recently celebrated a ‘three score’ reunion which deserves recognition . And it has only been achieved by resorting to ‘Military Discipline’ imposed by me, and strict enforcement of ‘Zero Tolerance’. Hitherto there has been no case of ‘Domestic Violence’ - but there is still time. All I ask for is the award of a gallantry medal which I think I have deserved.

SOLAR POWER SUBSIDY CUT A BLOW TO NEW INDUSTRY

A

shock announcement from the government has rocked the fledgling re-newables industry. From 12th December 2011 the subsidy for solar power is to be reduced by 50% for new installations. Although this is supposed to be subject to consultation the feeling within the industry is that it will go ahead, despite vigorous objections from all concerned. Tony Woodland, who has expanded his existing electrical contractors business, Woodland Installations Ltd, to specialize in solar panels said “ This is crazy. We are told that the government wants to create jobs to get us out of recession and although we were expecting a cut in the tariff and subsidies next April, they spring this on us out of no-where. This industry employs approximately 25,000 people, and we have 6 weeks to try to install all the orders on our books. This is not possible, so many customers will end up with the lower rate of 21pence instead of 43pence being paid for the feed in tariff. There are over 4,000 new businesses in the solar panel renewable sector and many of them may now be at risk due to this unexpected cut.’ He said that he would be continuing to install panels as many homeowners were still keen to generate electricity for their own use in order to reduce their bills, despite the reduced feed in tariff they would get back from the electricity companies. “ The solar industry has the potential to help the economy get going again. I have employed staff and have created work for others. I am fortunate to be working with Berkshire Roofing Ltd run by David Palmer. They were also looking to diversify and use existing skills and staff and together we make a great team. We will have to wait and see what the government consultation comes up with – I sincerely hope that they will back track and not slash the feed in tariffs until April 2012.” -Deborah Sheppard

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY MERLIN AND KING ARTHUR

T

he stories of these two characters as portrayed on TV often are at odds with my boyhood memories. I have been fascinated since I was old enough to read and a holiday visit to Tintagel many years ago and seeing the “Round Table” at Winchester all mean I was a hopeless romantic concerning this story. I have always been able to recite from memory parts of Alfred lord Tennyson poem, “The Passing of Arthur” especially the verses So all day long the noise of battle to rolled among the mountains by the wintry sea until King Arthur’s Table man by man had fallen in Lyonnesse about their Lord King Arthur. Then because his wound was cheap the bold Sir Bedivere uplifted him and bore him to a chapel high the field. A minor part of a truly splendid poem and is all concerned with Arthur’s distrust that Sir Bedivere was not casting his sword Excalibur into the lake. Three times he betrayed King Arthur until finally he thew the sword far into the lake and he was able to return to his king and report that as the sword fell: That from the surface “rose an arm clothed in white samite, mystic wonderful and caught him by the hill and brandished him. Three times and drew him under the mere. Bedivere now reported to Arthur and he now knew that the truth was told, in spite of thus his passing in the Royal barge covers a further 5 pages the end was inevitable and for me intensely moving. The poem originally translated from the French by Mallory in 1485 ran to 21 separate books printed by the Caxton Press and much later adapted by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

COUNCIL ESTABLISHING JUBILEE AND OLYMPIC COMMITTEES

H

ungerford Town council is establishing a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Committee with the job of overseeing the town’s celebrations which culminate on the special weekend of June 2 to 5. Headed by Cr Jean Hutchings, it is proposed the committee will comprise three councillors, two town and manor representatives and one each from the chamber of commerce, Round Table and Rotary with power to co-opt others. Form of the celebration is being discussed. A party at the Croft on lines of the one for the recent royal wedding with a large marquee is one suggestion. JUBILEE FIELD? Cr Roger Thompson suggested that West Berkshire Council should be persuaded to give up The Croft Field and allow the council to develop a Jubilee Field. OLYMPIC GAMES COMMITTEE Cr Martyn Hopkins successfully moved at the last Hungerford Town Council meeting for an Olympic Games Committee involving schools with a mini-Olympics on the Triangle Field to coincide with next year’s Olympic Games in London.

SERVICES OF TRIBUTE THIS SUNDAY

T

owns and villages throughout the area will this Sunday join the nation and the Commonwealth in services of tribute for those who died for, and those who served their country in times of war. Marches and war memorial services will be held and rolls of honour read. At Hungerford, assembly at the town hall will be between 10.15 and 10.30am for march-off at 10.45 for Hungerford war memorial where a special remembrance service will be conducted. Sales of poppies are reported to have been heavy throughout the district with many people involved.

GIFTED STATUE DEDICATED AT ST SAVIOUR’S

T

he Reverend Andrew Sawyer conducted a short service of dedication of a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child placed on the site of the Pauper’s graves at St Saviour’s Cemetery in Hungerford. Originally this statue was the property of a nearby Abbey, now defunct, and was presented to Cr David Liddiard who organised its move. A small group led by Mayor Martin and Mayoress Virginia Crane attended this ceremony at the cemetery which has undergone a major refreshment pioneered by ex-Mayor Gwynneth Bullock. Work that is continuing in the Council Offices as Town Clerk Mrs Claire Barnes strives to update all records appertaining to the historical records.

PARKWAY LEAVES ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

N

ewbury’s Kennet Centre could be next in line in the town’s re-development. The new Parkway developoment has attracted many new shoppers but comment indicates there is disappointment that it is not more elaborate with overall roofing like Basingstoke and Reading. It is being suggested that The Kennet Centre could be redeveloped into a modern multi-store contained area with ample parking. Central Newbury has been packed with people on the last two Saturday mornings and many have used Parkway which reportedly still has 40% of its area to fill.

HOMELESSNESS CHARITY SEEKS HELP

T

hreshold, Swindon’s homelessness charity, is looking for participants to run their emergency hostel in the centre of town, to deliver tins of soup and food as part of their annual Soup Run event on Thursday 3rd November. Threshold is aiming to re-stock their supplies ahead of the busy Winter period with tins of soup or food and is hoping generous and fit supporters will come out on the afternoon of the 3rd and run with their tins. There is no set distance and no entry fee, runners just need to arrive at Culvery Court, Harding Street, between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. This is a free to enter event and it is an opportunity to raise funds for the charity through sponsorship. As an incentive there will be event t-shirts for participants who raise £10 or more in sponsorship. Threshold serve 2 hot meals every day to 30 residents in their hostel and move-on houses and support up to another 50 a day at Breakfast Club, Day Centre and the Filling Station and so it’s crucial this is a successful event and a really good crowd attend. Phil Smith, Operations Director at Threshold said “We are encouraging people of all ages and fitness levels to enter in teams or as an individual to challenge each other as well as themselves on what is sure to be a cold, dark evening to raise vital funds and food supplies for the winter”. -Kirsty McNally

RECOLLECTIONS OF AN

BY

EXCITING LIFE

T

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

hroughout World War 2, the most pulse-quickening word ever to come over an Allied airman’s earphones was ‘Messerschmitt!’ implying the sudden appearance of the pride of the German Luftwaffe’s fighter force – a Messerschmitt 109 or, worse still, especially if the airman was in a heavy bomber, a group of them. This German counterpart of the Spitfire and the Hurricane fighterplanes had not only been designed by an ingenious engineer called Willi Messerschmitt but his company, Messerschmitt AG, had also built it. Willi was one of those phenomenal men – like the American, Henry Ford - who combine inventive ability with capacity for big-scale industrial organisation. As such, he had been one of the main-springs of Hitler’s ‘total war’ because the Me 109 was the most produced fighter in history – 35,000 having been built and flown. Later, Willi designed and built the Me 209, which broke the air speed record, and the Me 262 - the first jet-powered fighter which came just too late to affect the war. After the Allied victory in 1945, Messerschmitt was prosecuted for using slave labour, which he may have been forced to do, and served two years in prison. Being a fighter himself, he then immediately resumed his position as head of his company, which was based near Munich, but was forbidden to make aircraft. I was astonished when his irrepressible energy quickly produced a strange, little three-wheeled motor-car, a few of which were imported to Britain. So, I decided to fly out to Munich to meet Willi at his factory and see, for myself, what made him tick. When I did so, in June 1949, I was not disappointed. He was lanky, lantern-jawed, soft-voiced, and very pleasant to talk to – I will never forget his joyfully loud ‘Funfzig!’ when I asked him his age. He said that the name Messerschmitt translates as ‘maker of knives’ so he seemed to have been destined to make something. He

CHAPMAN PINCHER

had fallen in love with aircraft when he had flown in a glider at the age of fourteen and then trained as an engineer. He had designed the Me 109 in 1934 then, with Government backing, had manufactured it. Of course, what he wanted to make after his release from prison was more aircraft – transport planes much needed to help rebuild the German economy and was bitter about the way the Americans, in particular, had treated him. While he had been in prison, they had stripped his factory and laboratory of everything that was movable as war reparations. I could see little sign of his three-wheel car or the sewing machines he was also making as they were just sidelines. True to form, Willi was mass- producing something that the Fatherland needed more desperately – pre-fabricated houses for more than 50 towns rubbled by Allied bombs and artillery. He had bought a dozen books on housebuilding and had quietly gone to work on the drawing board. Soon, he was churning out homes elegantly designed to be permanent, as I saw for myself when taken to see some of them. After 1955 he was permitted to restart making airplanes for the West German Luftwaffe, retiring in 1970 and dying eight years later Though he had been a most dangerous enemy, I feel privileged to have met a man who, having been knocked off a pinnacle of power, could pick himself up, dust himself off and start again and whose name in the history of aviation and in the history of war will resonate down the ages.

FASHION SHOW BEATS THE ECONOMIC BLUES

T

he Chamber of Commerce in Marlborough proved it is determined to be in the front line of the fight against the recession. The recently organised fashion show got many local shops working together and proved a great success. The profits from the show have already amounted to £1,400 and the final total will be presented to the Air Ambulance Appeal. From November 24th, when the Christmas lights will be switched on, many shops will stay open until 8pm on Thursday evenings, allowing more opportunity to shop locally. Supporting High Street shops is probably more crucial, in these uncertain economic times, than it has ever been. -Val Compton

David Sherratt, who directed The Marlborough Players critically acclaimed first production, ‘An Inspector Calls’ back in 2006, will once again be at the helm as director. Suspense, suspicion, style and supernatural manifestations are at the forefront of Noel Coward1s improbable farce ‘Blithe Spirit’. Successful novelist Charles Condomine wishes to learn more about the occult for a novel he is writing and arranges for an eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, to hold a séance at his house. The scheme backfires after she inadvertently summons back Charles’s temperamental and mischievous first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for several years. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira who makes continued and increasingly desperate efforts to disrupt Charles’s current marriage to the dominating Ruth and reclaim her husband forever! -Gail Sinden

MARLBOROROUGH AREA BOARD

or Wiltshire Council, “doing nothing” was certainly not an option when they looked at the projected figures of people living over the age of 85years, along with the increased number of patients with dementia who are expected in the area who will require care. Extensive plans have been made to streamline the care system, also using better joined up thinking for working with the health service. Volunteers are now being sought to input at this stage of planning for the future and anyone who is interested can contact Wiltshire Councillor Jemima Milton. A number of new rooms at Coombe End Court may be built for dementia sufferers, but it is not just residential care that is in the pipeline. Help will be expanded to allow people to carry on living in their own homes where possible. In addition, a number of purpose built extra care units will be another option. There is a clear aim of facilitating independence for the maximum length of time. All the forward planning will benefit local people primarily, or those with strong ties in the Marlborough area, who will have priority over new arrivals. -Val Compton
