HUNGERFORD’S DOWNGATE IS A TRUE COMMUNITY PUB

n eight years as owner of the Downgate public house in Hungerford, David Yates has concentrated on creating a true community pub. As Hungerford’s senior publican, and head of Hungerford Pubwatch, he and his wife Janet concentrate on a homely atmosphere with home made and home cooked food. David lived in Andover before seeing and liking the Downgate and since that day has worked to please his customers. The Downgate is at the eastern end of Park Street at the entrance to Hungerford Common and offers plenty of free parking. Service is from 11am to 11pm seven days a week. Special lunches during the week are from £5.50 and the Sunday roast is freshly cooked with fresh vegetables every Sunday morning. Additionally, home made curries, lasagne and spaghetti bolognaise feature highly in popularity. David collects model aircraft and old coins and the aircraft collection may be seen hanging from the ceiling and in pictures on the wall. A new feature at the Down Gate will be a room dedicated to Tutti Day and Hocktide.

A BOOST FOR MANTON VILLAGE HALL

The Adviser, Friday,February 10 to 17, 2012

A grant of £1,000 was agreed by the Finance & Policy committee of Marlborough Town Council for Manton Village Hall. It was noted that the enthusiastic group that ran the hall had already raised a considerable amount. There is a plan to mark the Diamond Jubilee with a celebration that will hopefully raise further money, 50% of which will be donated to Riding for the Disabled. -Val Compton

PROMOTION OF TOURISM IN MARLBOROUGH

A

t the Marlborough Town council Finance & Policy meeting recently, councillors voted to support the proposal to go ahead with the design and production of leaflets for visitors to the town. It was proposed that a series of leaflets be ld age is no barrier to living life to the full according written, each one covering a different angle of Marlborough, such to 76 year old Dick Miles. Born in Burbage, but as the shops, the history, where to eat or stay etc. It is hoped they will be ready for a busy Summer which includes the Olympics and living most of his life in Marlborough, Dick served Diamond Jubilee celebrations. -Val Compton an apprenticeship with Peter Nicolls Antique shop, long since

gone from the high street. Here he learned a bit about wood turning and a great deal about upholstering, skills which would serve him well. On returning from Cyprus having completed his National Service, he set up on his own in the upholstery and carpet laying business. Although he retired over 10 years ago, Dick remains as busy as ever, his wood turning skills providing a great hobby. He recently delighted the children of St Mary’s Infant School, by making every single child a little wooden piggy for Christmas. These were under the tree in the church at the end of term service in which children sang their way through over a dozen songs, much to the delight of all. His many activities, which include visiting the Jubilee Centre once a week, endless woodworking, attending church and generally helping out where needed, keep him busy and in touch. He’s a great believer in the power of a good chat to keep happy and positive. However, his favourite two hours of the week are spent listening to children read at St Mary’s School. He stepped into the shoes of his great friend Buster Cox, who sadly died last year. Dick is wondering whether he should embark on a new project, making Jubilee Piggies complete with red, white and blue ribbons. Local crafts or souvenirs are often sought by tourists, but the town seems rather short on items aimed at the souvenir market. It may fall to Dick to lead the way, perhaps some younger crafty entrepreneurs might follow his lead. -Val. Compton

EXCITING LIFE

ERRING JUDGEMENT

R

ound about 4.30 pm used to be a particularly busy time for a Fleet Street journalist, like myself, because I would be trying to complete the news story or feature that I was writing for the following morning’s paper. The editors and sub-editors who ’put the paper to bed’, as the saying was, came in at 6 pm and wanted to start looking at the morrow’s material as quickly as possible and I always tried to oblige them. So, I was not best pleased when, round about 4.30 on a sunny afternoon in 1969, the phone of my excellent secretary, Yolande, rang and she told me that a Mr. Forsyth had presented himself in the Front Hall, unsolicited, to see me as he had an article which, he thought, would interest me and which the newspaper might like to buy. As I knew no Forsyths but was very aware that the Editor expected his own staff to fill the paper and was averse to spending money on outsiders – there was a permanent economy drive at the Daily Express – I asked Yolande to go down and politely get rid of the caller. Instead, being a kind soul, she returned with him and three cups of tea. Stuck with this tall, slim, rather pale stranger, at least until we finished the tea, I quickly disposed of his offer because the story was definitely not of the kind we published and I advised him to try further up the street at the Daily Telegraph. I then asked him about his background and he explained that he was 31 and had been a foreign correspondent for the Reuters News Agency, working in France and other countries, and then for the BBC, but had left and was working as a freelance. I grimaced, knowing how tough life was a freelance in such a ruthlessly competitive

place as Fleet Street and felt some sympathy for him. He then told me that he was writing a novel to which I responded by saying ‘Oh I write novels! What’s your about?’ He told me that it was about the attempted assassination of General de Gaulle. As I felt sure that if such an attempt had been made I would have heard about it I did not think much of the idea and when Forsyth had gone I said to Yolande, ‘Poor sod! That novel’s bound to fail. In fact, I doubt that he will find a publisher.’ Yes, you have guessed correctly! It was Frederick Forsyth and the novel was The Day of the Jackal, which was a justifiably stunning, world-wide success making the author a millionaire. He has since repeated his triumph with many more best-sellers. My judgement could not have been more at fault but he had not told me the title, which would have impressed me, and, in fact, several publishers did reject the book. Eventually, Freddie and I became good friends and we have often joked about that first encounter, his letters always being amusing and on the ball, as is the column which, with poetic justice, he writes for my old newspaper from which I had excluded him.

GREAT PLANS FOR SAVERNAKE HOSPITAL SHOP

T

he Friends Shop at Savernake Hospital has great plans for 2012 following a record breaking second year which finished with such a busy December that the shop was almost emptied of stock. The first refit has just taken place, so even more can be offered to staff, patients and visitors in the coming months. The trolley shop will also benefit from a greater diversity. The shop is open to everyone and hopes to encourage more people living locally to pop in for a paper, magazine, sweeties or the now famous hand-crafted knitwear for babies and children. There is also an excellent café next to the shop. Says Pat Harper, “We’re always looking for volunteers to come and work in the shop, so if you’re interested in finding out more, please make contact.” Pat at info@friendsofsavernake.org or give her a ring on 01672 511146. -Val. MPS VISIT DRY RIVER KENNET

ction for the River Kennet (ARK) hosted a visit to inspect the dry river bed at Manton on Saturday morning (14 January). Claire Perry MP for Devizes was joined by Charles Walker MP who chairs the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group, and former Reading MP Martin Salter, who is now the campaigns director for the Angling Trust. Action for the River Kennet was represented by Dr Geoffrey Findlay, Martin Gibson, John Lawson and Charlotte Hitchmough. A group of concerned local residents also joined the visit. Charles Walker, who as a child used to fish the Kennet with his grandfather, was depressed and upset to see the deep swirling mill pool where he caught his first trout reduced to a small puddle. ‘My grandfather would be turning in his grave’, he said. Claire Perry MP said that the critical drop in river levels was caused by the short term low rainfall the area has experienced over the last 18 months combined with excessive water abstraction. She said there needed to be

a system which stops water companies abstracting water when rivers are drying up. The new Water White Paper places a value on water which reflects its scarcity and value to the natural environment. Geoffrey Findlay, ARK’s chairman welcomed the aspirations and ideas in the Water White Paper, but pointed out that the need for action was incredibly urgent and ARK would like to see clear deadlines for action from the government. Claire Perry welcomed the ‘Care for the Kennet’ and ‘Save Water Swindon’ projects which could help households to reduce their water consumption. Dr Pihlens was a very popular and highly respected GP in Hungerford for all his professional life but his talk focused on his family links with Latvia. His grandfather had been a Latvian nationalist revolutionary in the early 20th century and had to escape in the hold of a German cargo ship from the Russian police and their bayonets. Eventually as a non-English speaking Protestant refugee he arrived in England and was befriended by a Church of England vicar and given employment and sanctuary by the vicar’s family. He met and married an English girl and they settled down in the West Country where Dr Pihlens was born. A wonderful story much appreciated by the audience, a lot of whom resolved to research their own family history. The next talk will be given by The Countess of Carnarvon “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. -Shelagh Parry

Claire Perry MP and Parliamentary Anglers urge swift action to help the struggling River Kennet On 14th January 2012, Claire Perry, MP for the Devizes Constituency, took the current and former Chairmen of the Parliamentary All Party Angling group to see the unprecedentedly low water levels on the River Kennet. The group met representatives from Action for the River Kennet (ARK) and local residents at Manton near Marlborough to inspect the dry river bed and discuss solutions. Commenting, Claire Perry said: “Rainfall has been low for the last 18 months but it is the abstraction of water from the Kennet by Thames (Photograph courtesy of Marlborough News Online) Water that is the real concern. I welcome the Government’s commitment to reforming abstraction tariffs in their recent White Paper and we know that Thames Water are working hard to educate people on the need for water conservation with their “Care for the Kennet” campaign. Ultimately, though, we need to get the relief pipeline built for Swindon as this is the only thing that will protect the Kennet long term. By working with my Parliamentary colleagues including those here today we can keep the pressure up on Thames Water, Ofwat and on Ministers to get this urgent project underway”. Charles Walker MP, current chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group said: “As much as I enjoyed visiting Claire’s constituency, I was horrified at the tragic state of the River Kennet. As a passionate fisherman and in my capacity as the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Angling, I will fully support Claire and the ARK’s Campaign to restore flows to this beautiful river. The Angling group will be lobbying the Government.” Claire was joined on her visit by; Charles Walker MP for Broxbourne, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group; Martin Salter, formerly MP for Reading, who is now the Campaigns Director for the Angling Trust; Dr Geoffrey Findlay, Martin Gibson, John Lawson and Charlotte Hitchmough from ARK and local residents. · Figures from Thames Water show that rainfall in the local catchment area (Upper Thames) for 2011 was on average 20.42mm less than the 90 year long term average. Thames Water has said it would need around 80% of its long-term average winter rainfall to rule out the likelihood of drought-related water-use restrictions next year. · The proposed pipeline by Thames Water would link the water supplies for South and North Swindon to enable more water for the town to be taken from the Thames. Discussions between Thames Water and the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) are ongoing.

Zumba into 2012 If you think Zumba classes are the province of the young and very fit – think again. Lau Vergara who runs Zumba classes from Monday to Friday, realised the need to run a “cool” class for those who are not quite so fit or even quite so young. Class times and venues vary throughout the week so there is likely to be a class near you at a time you can attend. Says Lau, “No special gear is needed – just comfortable clothes, trainers will do for footwear but most important, a willingness to have fun for an hour”. Details of Zumba classes (along with the cool classes or toning sessions) are available from Lau on 07747 61 71 99 or on http://ZwithLau.blogspot.com
