Community safety focus Community safety and stronger community connections are the two focus areas that a local Alliance of community groups is passionate about improving in the Hurunui district this year. The Alliance is planning activities to help improve community safety and strengthen community connections and is inviting residents to take part in a short community wellbeing survey over the next eight weeks to track the progress being made. Survey forms are available in all medical centers throughout the district and online via a link on the Hurunui District Council website. Residents who complete the survey will go into the draw to win one of two family passes to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools. Winners will be drawn on March 31 and published in The News soon after. The move follows an invitation in early 2014 for residents to have a say on ways social support could be improved in their community with one of the issues raised being the changing demographic makeup in the Hurunui district following the

Canterbury earthquakes with people moving out from central Christchurch to find housing. This rapid change alongside the significant development of the dairy and wine industries, hospitality and other agricultural sectors resulted in concern being raised about people experiencing isolation and not always knowing their new neighbours. These findings helped inform the Hurunui Community report commissioned by the Greater Canterbury Community Response Forum launched in August last year and which is available on the Hurunui District Council website. The Response Forum was established by the former Social Development Minister, Paula Bennett late last year. It has now provided a platform to communicate top priorities to Government with the Hurunui Community report being submitted to Ms Bennett late last year. Any questions on the survey can be made by emailing marie.black@hurunui.govt.nz or Julie Coster at julie.coster@hurunui.govt.nz.

Sally says . . . Hi and Happy New Year! It’s sale time and YES, it’s the one you all love – Sally Mac’s “BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE” summer sale. You know how it works – all summer stock is in the sale and it’s all “BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE”. So, you choose any two pieces (excludes jeans, lingerie and accessories) and the lower-price piece is free – not half-price, FREE!!! It’s a great deal – I want less stock and you want bargains! I always thought that was how sales worked :) Summer arrived very late, and very hot – just like summer when we were kids. My in-built weather radar suggests (and hopes) that it’ll linger till late March / April – warm days, slightly cooler nights so we can sleep, and any rain at night! Dresses have been the must-have item for summer 2014-15 – dressing up for parties and weddings has been lots of fun, with gorgeous colours, and even a few sleeves! We’re getting better at wearing sleeveless and adding a little cardie/ jacket over the top. Prints have been busy, retro or a blast of colour – you decide if it’s print tops over your jeans or ¾ pants, or plain tops over pretty skirts. So no matter whether your best colours are cool and casual or warm and wonderful, Sally Mac’s has something that works for you! I’ve finally climbed on to Facebook – now that’s been a learning curve and I’m still a learner! I’ll be adding typical Sally Mac stuff that I hope you’ll enjoy, and I’d really love it if you “liked” the page and told your friends about Sally Mac’s gear – feel free to share the sale flyer, or post me a pic of you and your gear! Watch this space – by this time next year, I might even be a level 1 operator. My best Sall Mac moment for December was the arrival, back in store of our favourite and best-selling jeans ever – Tre Bliss, jeans for real women. Not in the sale, of course, but we have plenty of stock, and a new distributor in NZ, so here’s to not running out of your size. Still available in straight leg (not skinny), black or dark indigo. We have a lovely new beauty therapist in the corner space beside us – Amanda, from Jolie Femme, would love to meet you. I’ve already had my first pedicure and my leg-waxing is always a good look for summer! We’re enjoying our friendly bubbly neighbour, and the fragrance which wafts in to the back of the shop is delightful. Amberley is a changing growing town – Sally Mac’s is still on the Main Road in downtown Amberley, and the Sally Mac’s summer sale is still “BUY ONE, GET ONE FREE”! Grab your mother and your mates, your girlfriend and her granny, and we’ll see you at the sale. All February, we’ll be there!
