Hair goes for Child Cancer

By TANYA WOOD A Levin family has gone bald for a good cause. The Watters — mum Faith, dad Kieran and sons Noah, 9, and Zion, 4 — had their hair shaved off to mark a special milestone in Noah’s life, starting his fourth year cancer free after being diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was five years old.

The family shave-off on Sunday, at Levin hair salon Original Glamour, was part of Noah’s fundraising goal to raise $1000 for the Child Cancer Foundation, which had supported him and his family during his ordeal.

Noah, who was chosen as a Child Cancer Foundation Regional Ambassador in March, had previously raised $483 from a street appeal and other donations.

razor was no hardship for Faith, who had a heart shaved at the back of her head in the same place as her son’s operation scar.

“It felt overwhelming, feeling my hair coming off, but it’s for a great cause and I had a lot of support from friends and family on the day.”

With the $1000 target now tantalisingly close, having raised a total of $936.45 after the hair shaves, Faith is hoping they can raise the remaining $63.55 by the end of the week.

“Child Cancer Foundation is an amazing organisation and I don’t know how we would have coped without their support. It feels really great to be able to give something back.”

HAIR TODAY: Briar Theunissen will be shaving her hair off on Saturday at Shadz Hair Design to raise money for Arohanui Hospice.

Briar Theunissen has been growing her long blond hair for 10 years but on Saturday it’s all coming off in a good cause.

The Levin mum of two will be shaving off her hair to raise as much money as she can for the Arohanui Hospice.

“It seems to me that everyone knows someone in Levin who has in some way been affected by cancer,’’ she said.

“I’m 25 and already I’ve lost my mother, an aunty and two close friends to this horrible monster, all of whom were supported to the end of their

lives by Arohanui Hospice.

“It wasn’t until I spent time with mum at Arohanui Hospice that I truly understood what great specialist end-of-life care service the hospice staff and volunteers provide.”

Arohanui Hospice is only partially funded by the District Health Board and this year had a $2.3 million shortfall.

“I thought why not give this whole head shave thing a crack and see how much I can raise.

If I can join those who have lost their hair to chemo or similar treatments, it will hopefully help them feel they are never

alone, even if supported by a total stranger.”

Briar will be joined by four other women, Margaret Goodall, Denise Ridley, Marjorie Armstrong and June Fifield, shaving their hair off in support. All funds raised will go to Arohanui Hospice.

Lucky escape for women Foxton real estate agent Ellen Graham and a woman passenger were lucky to escape injury after a car allegedly being driven up the wrong side of State Highway 1 hit Ms Graham’s car.

Ms Graham was taking a friend to Wellington Airport

when the accident took place between Porirua and Tawa about 11.30pm last Thursday.

A car going north in the southbound lane, being pursued by police, hit Ms Graham’s car on the passenger side before crashing into a bank and stop-

ping about 500 metres up the road.

Levin shows claim awards Palmerston North’s Globe Theatre comes alive for the annual Globe Awards.

This year Levin Performing Arts Society took home more than its fair share of trophies.

Last year LPAS presented three shows, Seussical the Musical, Bonnie & Clyde and Bouncers, which received a total of 15 nominations. Between them they took home six major awards: Seussical the Musical won Best Costume Design: Jan Reid, Gayle Staats, Penny Patterson, Best Show for Children. Seussical the Musical was directed by Linda Buckley.

Bonnie & Clyde won Best Technical Design: Reuben Price and Maree Michell, Best Musical Direction: Colin Taylor, Best Supporting Performance in a Musical - Male: Walter Godfrey as Buck Barrow, Best Supporting Performance in a Musical - Female: Cat Lamb as Blanch.

LPAS President Chris Craddock made special acknowledgement of Bonnie & Clyde cast members Godfrey and Lamb, who won their categories at this, their first time in a major musical.

Mr Craddock also acknowledged a particularly poignant moment for the LPAS members came when it was announced that Seussical the Musical had won Best Costume Design. Co-recipient of the award Patterson died at the end of last year after a short battle with cancer.

District growth is an important subject for ratepayers, how will economic growth benefit the average person in the street? An insight will be given at the Horowhenua District Ratepayers and Residents annual general meeting on Saturday June 21.

Everyone in New Zealand is entitled to have their say about ACC’s proposed levies for the coming year, or share their views about any aspect of the ACC scheme. This year, ACC has proposed across the board levy cuts in 2015, the first since ACC shifted to a fully funded model in 1999. A feature of the proposed changes next year includes the introduction of risk rating for two classes of light passenger vehicles, which include cars. Under risk rating, the levy you pay when you relicense your car will reflect how safe the car is in a crash. The safer the car, the lower the levy. ACC will consider all submissions, then make its recommendations on levies to the Minister for ACC. The final decision on levies rests with the Government. Campaign aimed at pirates, counterfeiters The global police organisation Interpol is urging New Zealanders to consider the consequences of buying counterfeit and pirated goods. Interpol's Turn Back Crime campaign, is supported by New Zealand Police.

Networks behind various trafficking of illicit goods, fake medicines, drugs, arms and even people, often have links with other seemingly unrelated crimes. They can be involved with counterfeiting, cybercrime, kidnapping, fraud, crimes against children and corruption in sport. Profits from one crime area used to fund another.

“In simple terms cheap, branded goods like medicines, clothing and accessories can end up funding organised crime and even terrorism,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Dunn, head of New Zealand's Interpol Bureau.

“The reality is those bargain branded goods will probably be fakes and your money could end up funding organised crime networks somewhere in the world.”

New Zealand Police works closely with the New Zealand Customs Service and the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand in this area. “If it looks too good to be true then it probably is,” Mr Dunn said.

THE shadows made by a row of mail boxes along a stretch of road on the way to Forest Lakes, and the silver trunks of beech trees shining, just begged to be taken on this lovely autumn day, according to photographer Mari Rossouw. “I think of it as a study of rural Horowhenua.”

BLUE BEAT with GRAEME JARVIS Community Constable Levin police have had another busy week, with well over 120 calls for service recorded.

Incidents ranged from lost and found property, to drug crime, theft, burglary and motor vehicles crashes attended.

Unfortunately, burglaries once again feature highly in the statistics and police are concerned about a spike in offending that has become noticeable in the area around Elizabeth Street, Duke Street, and Graham Street. These are all homes where goods such as

computers, phones and Xbox consoles have been targeted.

While the offenders are prepared to break in to gain entry, they will also make use of insecure premises, where they found both doors and windows unlocked.

One burglary occurred during the day at a Winchester Street property, and again the home had been left unlocked, making it

an easy target.

The good news is that burglar alarms have prevented entry into homes and some commercial properties on a number of occasions throughout the week, and this remains the best line of defence.

A break-in at Levana early last week netted thieves a large haul of merino tops in a range of colours and styles. Adult, children's and infant tops were stolen, all bearing a fern logo, and women's socks.

If anyone is offered cheap merino tops or socks, in a range of colours, police would like to hear from them.

Wild weather is once again wrecking havoc around the district, and particular care is urged on the roads. Rain, low light conditions, and now high winds can make driving conditions treacherous.

Couple these conditions with autumn leaves blocking drains, and the potential to cause surface flooding after a deluge is very high. Police are urging extra care, drive to the conditions, watch following distances and reduce speed where necessary.

Levin police staff were again privileged to be involved with the Loves me Not campaign, this year introduced into Waiopehu

College. The programme is aimed at 16 and 17 years, and is intended to raise awareness of what is a healthy and unhealthy relationship.

It covers topics such as family violence, identifying types of abuse that lead to power and control in relationships, and breaking down some of the myths. About 90 Year 12 students took part in the course, with representatives from police, teaching staff and nonGovernment organisations acting as facilitators. Initial feedback from all concerned is that this is a very worthwhile programme.

The competition winner will receive a 12-week customised exercise, nutrition and skin treatment plan to get them looking and feeling great.

Skin Medic is running the competition and has teamed up with NV Training, Fitstop Health and Fitness Centre, and Elegance Laser and Skin Clinic.

Book characters came alive at Levin School on Friday as pupils dressed up for Character Day on Friday, just one of the many activities held during Book Week, aiming to promote literacy in a creative and fun way.

The weeklong activities included quizzes, plays, rewriting stories, mask making and a special lunch of Hullabaloo Finch and Chimps (aka fish and chips).

Classes read books to each other and were read to by staff

from Warehouse Stationery (the school’s sponsor for Duffy books) with a special visit from children’s author Diana Neild, of Piggity Wiggity Jiggity Jig series fame.

Deputy principal Jeanette Wilson, who organised the literary-themed week, said literacy is already strong within the school but is given greater emphasis in Book Week.

She said it’s also an opportunity for the whole school to mix, where the older pupils can be seen as role models for the younger ones, and for community members and authors to come along and read to the children.

Safety concerns lead to Weiss product recall Weiss Heat Transfer Units (Pre 2010) — Voluntary Product Recall.

In response to information supplied by the New Zealand Fire Service and Energy Safety New Zealand, Weiss Limited is advising owners of four models of Weiss heat transfer units manufactured before 2010 that it is conducting a voluntary recall of those units.

The affected units are model numbers FV652, FV653, FV 602 and FV 603 manufactured between 2007 and 2009. A number of these (0.09 per cent of the installed base) have been involved in fires and overheating incidents reported to the New Zealand Fire Service between 2009 and 2014. In 2010 Weiss introduced additional safety features into the product. These newer units, which have a thermal cutout, are not under voluntary recall.

To date Weiss has only been able to inspect two of the units involved in incidents, and neither it nor any of the regulatory authorities have been able to identify a common cause. While the design of the units complied with the then-relevant standard (ASNZS 3350.2.870), and had been tested, Weiss agrees with Energy Safety New Zealand that there may be a risk in continuing to use these older models.

Weiss has set up an inbound call centre

to help people identify whether their unit is affected and will provide advice on recall.

The centre can be contacted on 0800 208 008.

Weiss will also establish a process to ensure that replacement units are properly installed by a registered electrician and are code compliant.

Weiss is also offering all owners of units purchased and installed before January 2010 the opportunity to replace their old unit with a new one with enhanced safety features. They will be able to purchase it at manufacturing cost (between $138 and $195) and it will be delivered freight free.

Weiss has manufactured and supplied heat transfer units into New Zealand since 2002. Around 20,000 units were sold prior to 2010 and around 35,000 units have been installed in total.

Weiss had been aware of five incidents that took place between 2009 and 2014.

Weiss made inquiries to the New Zealand Fire Service and received information from them, channelled through Energy Safe New Zealand, about an additional 13 incidents. Weiss has not been able to inspect any units from these other incidents or seen any technical reports. It received information about them only after coverage appeared in the Waikato Times.

ARE YOU A DAB-HAND IN THE KITCHEN? As National Volunteer Week kicks off Enliven in Levin is reminding Horowhenua locals just how important volunteers are to the organisation.

Levin Home and Reevedon Home are run by Enliven — the aged care arm of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central. Manager Joanna Thomson explains that volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the home’s residents to continue doing the things they love.

“When someone moves into a rest home they haven’t changed, it’s just their address that’s changed, but sometimes they do need a little more support to be able to continue with their favourite pastimes. That’s where our volunteers are able to help,” Joanna said.

Right now the call is out for someone to volunteer their time once a week to help residents at Reevedon Home in Salisbury Street to bake cakes and sweet treats.

Joanna explains that the residents would like to set up a weekly baking club, but need the help of a keen baker to do so.

“Lots of our residents have enjoyed baking all of their lives but now they need a bit of extra support to continue with their hobby. I’m sure that there are plenty of people out there who are a dab hand in the kitchen,” Joanna says. “Even just a few hours a week would be helpful and mean a lot to the residents.”

Enliven is also looking for volunteers to help with gardening, housie, shopping trips and driving the residents’ van on outings around the region.

“We’re specifically looking for someone who can drive the van for our residents’ Monday afternoon ‘tiki-tour’ of the district,” Joanna says. “It means a lot to our residents to get out and about around the region, but we don’t always have

Marking Matariki It’s almost time for Te Takere’s Matariki celebration. The rise of the star cluster Matariki (Pleiades) marks the beginning of the Aotearoa Pacific New Year according to the lunar calendar. This year it takes place on June 28 and we have a week-long programme leading up to the occurrence.

Matariki celebrations usually begin on the day of the first new moon following its rising.

Tribal celebrations are held at different times by different tribes. For some, feasts are held when it is first seen. For others, it is the full moon after it rises that is celebrated and for others, celebrations are centred on the dawn of the next new moon.

Each winter the stars of Matariki and Puanga signal the end of one year and the beginning of the next.

The Tea Chest is what I would call a happy book. I am so impressed with a place that has beautiful teapots, such a variety of teas, tastings, lovely surroundings, nice people and delectable goodies. We do well here in New Zealand with our flat whites and long blacks, but tea is usually a tea bag in a cup or, if you are lucky, a little teapot and the same price as a well-made coffee.

Campaign targets young passengers NZ Transport Agency is wanting to hammer home the message that you don’t have to be driving to cause a crash.

It has implemented a series of new ads aimed at urging young passengers to consider what they do in the car can affect their mates’ ability to concentrate and drive safely.

Evidence shows the fatal crash risk for young drivers is higher if they have passengers in the car. With two or more passengers, the risk is 10 times greater compared to driving alone. And the risk is at its greatest when the passengers are a similar age to the driver.

The new campaign ‘Let the driver drive’ targets passengers (18-25 year olds) who are often oblivious to the risk they pose when they distract a driver — especially those who do not yet drive themselves. By taking responsibility for their actions when travelling, they could prevent a driver from being distracted.

The campaign includes large street posters, print ads in targeted magazines, and online/cinema animation advertising.

Market boss steps down after 20 yrs

By TANYA WOOD Hear ye, hear ye, the Manakau Medieval Market is losing one of its long-standing members.

Current chair of the Manakau Medieval Market Charitable Association, Brian Wilton, is officially standing down after 20 years’ involvement.

The popular medieval-themed market, which started as a fundraising idea by half a dozen people in 1993 to raise money for new Plunket and playgroup rooms, is now one of Levin’s biggest annual events, attracting thousands from outside the district, following its move from Manakau in 2006 to the AP&I Showgrounds.

Brian volunteered to help in 1994, manning the First Aid post, and joined the association working committee about two years later while still keeping his role as a first aider. “Dealing with a few cuts and grazes was as bad as it ever got,” he said.

The biggest change in the market’s history was its move to Levin, Brian said. “We didn’t have a say over that. New Zealand Transport Agency stopped us, calling it a health and safety issue.

We used all the streets and nearby paddocks in Manakau but because traffic could only go in and out from one road onto SH1, we had traffic backed up to Te Horo some years.”

He said the market has taken on a life of it’s own and each year the association tries to have something new or different. “This has become a challenge in itself but the aim every year is to create an affordable, fun day out for the family and give something back to the community.”

Stepping down for health reasons, Brian said the association is always looking for people with new ideas to join.

“I’ve had a great time, meeting and working with people. It’s been really fantastic, every year’s been a highlight, and I’m sorry I’ve got to give up. It’s been hard work at times but it’s been awesome fun. I would’ve liked to have made it to 25 years, but I’ll still be around to give a hand on the day.”

The Manakau Medieval Market Charitable Association annual meeting is June 26, 7pm at the AP&I Showgrounds President’s Office, Victoria St, Levin. Anyone interested in finding out about volunteering is welcome.

A giant woven wha¯riki (mat) is on display on the waka walls at Te Takere.

The work of Te Kokiri weaving instructor Sue Tucker, the unusual whariki measures three metres by three metres and took 530 hours to make.

Sue, a former fashion and design teacher at Waiopehu College, started to learn to weave in 2006 after she found that Te Kokori were happy to teach pakeha the traditional craft.

“I didn’t think I would be allowed to share in such a special art,” she said.

Now she is giving back by teaching her new skills at Te Kokori and last year completed a three-year degree course in Maori Visual Arts at Te Wa¯nango o Aoteraroa, travelling to Te Kuiti for a weekend once a month for practical sessions.

The wha¯riki she created as part of her final year and it makes a striking exhibit on the waka walls at Te Takere, one of the few times Sue has been able to display it in its entirety because of its size.

“It was a huge learning experience; I have never done anything of that size before.”

Normally a large wha¯riki would be made in separate panels, but Sue started hers in the middle and worked outwards.

the making of it. I designed it first and then thought about how I could do it.”

Sue said the wha¯riki was woven to illustrate similarities in ideology between the indigenous peoples of Papua New Guinea, Fiji and New Zealand.

The centre papa (section) represents the Papuans. It depicts a sea turtle and is woven in red, black and yellow, the colours of the country’s flag.

Surrounding the centre papa is an area of sea, which throughout the whole wha¯riki represents Tangaroa, the god of the sea, who is recognised by indigenous people throughout the Pacific region.

The next four sections

represent the Fijians.

Two have turtles, the patangaroa (starfish) design and a masi (Fijian bark cloth) design. The other two Fijian sections have green ferns on a natural background and the two sections are surrounded by an area of sea.

New Zealand’s Ma¯ori people are represented in the next four sections which is mainly worked in red, black and natural, the colours favoured in Ma¯ori art. Two have silver ferns, the other two have the starfish and whakanihoniho designs, the latter chosen because as it is one of the first recorded weaving designs.

Two kiwi were added on completion using the overlay method commonly used by Pacific Island weavers.

Sue is pleased with the result of all her work.

“I think it does what I intended it to do,” she said.

Decrease in youth crime welcomed

By PETER FRANKLIN A 25 per cent drop in youth arrests is a pleasing result for Horowhenua District Mayor Brendan Duffy, who is chairman of one of the key agencies, Life to the Max, that has been responsible for the reduction.

Last year there were 258 apprehensions of youth aged from 12 to 17-years-old, compared with 343 the year before.

In the two months of January and February this year there was a 57 per cent reduction in youth apprehensions, compared to the same period in 2012.

The Social Sector Trial (SST), launched in Horowhenua in 2011 and co-ordinated by Life to the Max Horowhenua, has enabled the community to redevelop the way that social services are being delivered locally, encouraging cross-agency collaboration.

Mr Duffy said with local agencies, organisations and ministries all working cohesively, enables greater awareness and understanding, information sharing and data collection.

“From this there has been a multitude of positive flow-on effects and some truly positive results are emerging.” he said.

Mr Duffy said the decrease in youth apprehensions can be linked to an increase in school attendance and a huge range of innovative initiatives aimed to engage youth in a range of positive activities.

The closure rate for non-enrolled student notifications in the district has increased from 21 per cent in 2011 to 91 per cent in 2013.

“These young people were provided with support and the opportunity to return to mainstream education or transition on to further education or training, assisted by the team at Life to the Max.” he said.

HLC now hosts the Youth One Stop Shop (YOSS) Clinic providing free doctor and nurse services for 12 to 24 year olds, as well as school-based clinics at both Horowhenua and Manawatu Colleges.

At Waiopehu College there is the district's Teen Parenting Unit — He Whare Manaaki Tangata — and Blake House medical facility.

Whaioro Trust has been able to employ a second full-time Youth Alcohol and Other Drug counsellor, providing youth with faster access to one-to-one counselling.

The Trust also provides group education at schools to raise awareness and address the harm that alcohol and other drugs may have.

In addition, the Social Sector Trial has initiated school holiday programmes such as dance, information technology, and fishing.

Life to the Max staff have also collaborated with various community organisations to help organise community events including the Nua Children’s Day event, Dad’s Day Out and Pasifika Youth Jandal Jam. “These are all designed to ensure that young people in our community have the opportunity to engage in positive activities, to try new things and to create positive mentoring opportunities while developing their skills in leadership and resiliency,” Mr Duffy said.

Levin: Find your voice

By FRANKIE WEBB Myrna Michell has travelled half way around the world and is making Horowhenua her home.

“I have been granted residency here,” she said. “I feel I’m a part of the community already.”

Myrna, who moved from England in January to be nearer her son and his family, wants to give something back to the community that has welcomed her so well.

“I want to get a community choir going,” she said. “I’d like to call it Sing Out Levin.”

Anyone 18 and over is welcome to join.

“You don’t have to have any singing ability or should I say, any belief in your singing ability,” Myrna said. “You don’t even have to be able to read music.”

Myrna has conducted workshops throughout the United Kingdom, has run choirs and operettas.

“I’ve never actually started a choir,” she said. “This is very exciting. I believe everybody can sing, some people just have not had the opportunity to develop it.”

As a young girl her talents became obvious when she tinkled the theme to the Dambusters on a cousin’s piano at age 5.

“It was suggested I go and have music lessons,” she said.

Her talent both on keyboards and vocally have been enjoyed by a number of Horowhenua organisations. This Saturday she is running what she calls a ‘tester’ at the Savage Club in Parker Avenue.

“I don’t want people to think it is an audition,” she said. “There’ll be no solo singing or individual try outs, the signing will be as a choir and everyone is welcome.”

Gritty Old Boys make Toa work for victory

By TANYA WOOD Levin College Old Boys applied the pressure to Ngati Toa in Saturday’s Senior Reserves rugby match, taking the unbeaten Kapi-Mana side to one of its tightest scorelines this season.

With Toa leading 7-0 at halftime, LCOB showed grit and determination to take the game to Toa in the second half, scoring two tries.

LCOB manager Dean Smith said Toa were made to work hard for every point.

“Toa are the top team.

They’ve won all their games, so for us to have scored the most tries against them in a match so far is a fantastic achievement, especially as a number of our players weren’t playing in their normal positions.”

The final score was 31-17.

Winger Robert Brown and second-five Tyson Tamakaha each scored a try for LCOB, with Tamakaha converting both and kicking the penalty.

Smith said his team kept up the pressure throughout the game. “We showed great composure in defence and were competitive to the end. The team should be proud of their performance.”

The only low point was Mario Horitepa, playing centre, being carried off during the second half with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (knee) injury that could see him out of action for the rest of the season.

A win by Paraparaumu at the weekend pushed LCOB from third to fourth place on the club competition points table.

Levin North battle to win over Defenders In the 9th grade football the Defenders played Levin North on Saturday at Donnelly Park, the sides were evenly matched.

The teams into half time with one goal apiece.

In the second half, North kept the pressure on with

By PETER FRANKLIN The Levin Wolves under 15 rugby league squad showed how hungry they were for a win in front of a home crowd taking the Foxton Rebels down 40-4.

Wolves team manager Jim Gunning said he was impressed with the boys who were determined to put on a good performance in front of a home crowd something that they have not had the chance to do this season.

The game was played under lights at Playford Park

and drew a reasonably good crowd. Mr Gunning said he believed that if the Wolves were allocated more games in Levin it would not take long for the league fans to build in numbers.

He said the young squad had what it takes to make it through to the play offs. “We came into the competition late and have put ourselves in a favourable position, we take on bottom of the ladder Dannevirke next Friday in Palmerston North, and with the confidence that the players have at the moment

they should go into the game as favourites,” he said.

However Mr Gunning quickly added that Dannevirke could come out all fired up and put an end to the Wolves master plan.

Mr Gunning said the score against the Rebels was impressive and there were other aspects of the game that cemented it for them.

“You cannot score tries if you don’t set the right platform and that is what they did, they set up the plays and finished them off,” he said.

Time to plant garlic Digging in WALLY RICHARDS

I

am amazed at the price of New Zealand grown garlic is at about $2 a bulb of cloves.

I think what has happened is a couple of years back the market in New Zealand became flooded with cheap garlic from China.

The New Zealand growers could not obtain a reasonable price for their produce and as a result a number of growers changed to more profitable crops.

In the meantime we found the cheap garlic from China was of poor quality and suspect of unhealthy aspects.

So the tide turned and we looked for New Zealand-grown high quality garlic but alas fewer growers makes for less supply and up goes the price.

We used to see the same thing happening years ago with potatoes, not from overseas competition but from seasons of glut followed by a season of low production resulting in high prices.

This would encourage growers and farmers to plant for the following season causing a glut and low prices.

It would seem the potato industry has got its act together

Gypsum and sheep manure pellets can also be applied to the planting area.

Place the cloves about an inch deep into the soil in spacings of 4 inches apart with the point just poking out of the ground.

Water in MBL (Magic Botanic Liquid) which acts as a catalyst aiding the uptake of goodness you have applied to the soil. An occasional spray or drink of the same product will be to benefit, over the growing period.

What happens is firstly the clove will produce a massive root system of white tender roots and a small green sprout. As the chills of winter occur this will initiate the side buds which later, with the lengthening day light hours and warmer temperatures, will fill out to become cloves. When the tops die back the new bulbs will be ready to harvest.

They should then be stored dry, in a cool airy situation and checked regularly for rots.

To prevent bulbs re-sprouting lightly burn the remaining roots with a candle flame. If you want to keep your own cloves for the following seasons crop, then select the best cloves and don't burn their base roots. Now is a good time to plant.

There are many reasons to grow your own garlic besides saving you the cost of buying what someone else has grown.

You will know that your garlic is free of chemical sprays and has all the goodness in it that nature and your soil can provide.

You will have ample garlic for cooking with and for health

better these days.

Back to the topic which is garlic and the traditional planting on the shortest day.

There is a very good reason for the shortest day planting as the day light hours are increasing and that promotes the crop to grow and later for the bulbs to form prior to harvesting on the longest day.

If there is just one vegetable that anyone can grow it has to be garlic, as one plant needs only 4 inches (100mm) of room to grow in fertile, free draining soil.

The end result of what you obtain, be it a lovely big bulb with lots of cloves or a dismal excuse for a bulb depends on a few factors.

Garlic is a member of the onion family and so it likes similar conditions. They prefer a good amount of natural nitrogen in their initial development, so the use of animal manure especially chicken manure is important.

Garlic requires ample moisture but hates wet feet which leads to root rots and failures. They relish a friable soil with a harder clay pan underneath. Best grown also in a sunny exposed situation where they can be chilled in winter.

Choose a site for planting that is free draining and will not be waterlogged in winter.

Work chicken manure and Rok Solid into the area to be planted and also apply BioPhos (the Organic form of super) Ensure the top 75 to 100mm of the soil is worked well to make the area friable.

We know that garlic is wonderful for your health and in particular it is excellent for preventing abnormal blood clotting, angina attacks and strokes.

Also for stimulating the immune system so is beneficial to all cancer patients.

It seems to act by suppressing, preventing or inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, and can even cause the death of some cancer cells due to the allicin content of the garlic.

If you are like myself and don't wish to have a cancer condition then a regular intake of natural garlic is worthwhile.

Garlic is more effective than vitamin C to prevent the conversion of dietary nitrates and nitrites into carcinogenic nitrosamines.

Garlic has the ability to rid the body of many harmful bacteria such as e.coli, salmonella and shigella, and to destroy viruses, is well researched, as is its ability to lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar in diabetes and lower LDL cholesterol.

Try this for babies, children or yourself to relieve a nasty cold, peel and crush a clove of garlic and steep it in enough

olive oil to cover. Leave for at least an hour then smear the oil on the soles of the feet. Put socks on and retire to bed.

It is said that home made garlic oil transverses the body extremely fast and within about 10 minutes of applying to the soles of the feet it can be smelt on the breath of the patient.

Spots on teenagers can be stopped by rubbing the area with a bit of cut garlic.

You can often stop a cold by carefully peeling a clove and placing it between the gum and the cheek in the mouth and leaving it there. Ideally you should eat some garlic every day and grow sufficient to cater for your requirements and your family. If you can’t peel a clove and chew it to swallow then make the garlic oil and place into a salad or meal.

If you are worried about the smell of garlic on your breath then chew a sprig of parsley.

Parsley is another herb that you should always have a plentiful supply of in the garden.

Its a must for poor blood circulation and for people that have chilblains in winter.

n obvious question is “why has it taken so long?”

Having recently reached third generation status, the modern incarnation of the Mini has steadily increased in size, but — discounting the Countryman SUV, the Roadster and the oddly configured Clubman — it’s remained with three doors.

Until now. A second bodystyle variant of the new third generation Mini was revealed last week and will bring five-door hatchback motoring to the brand for the first time.

Badged as Mini 5 door, there’s a five-seat configuration with a 60/40 split fold rear seat backrest and a useful increase in load volume.

It’s been achieved by stretching the new Mini platform and some additional space also comes from a slightly raised roofline.

Compared to the new generation three-door Mini hatch the wheelbase is extended by 72mm (to 2567mm) and the overall length by 161mm for 1.5-litre models and by 184mm for the larger engined Cooper S and Cooper SD versions.

Vehicle width at 1727mm is identical to the three-door while body height is increased by 11mm to 1425mm. Mini says that provides 72mm more foot space and legroom, 15mm more headroom and 61mm more interior width at elbow height.

The luggage compartment space also gets a boost to 278 litres — 67 litres more than in the three-door model — and along with the 60:40 split rear seat configuration Mini will offer an optional storage package including luggage compartment floor which can be locked into place at varying points.

The Mini 5 door is expected to reach the New

Zealand market in early-2015.

The other main news to accompany the 5 door reveal is a second diesel engine joining the Mini line-up.

The new engine is a 1995cc four-cylinder turbocharged diesel which will power models badged as Cooper SD. The engine develops 125kW at 4000rpm and will have peak torque of 360Nm available between 1500-2750rpm.

Performance from the TwinPower Turbo diesel unit will allow the automatic Cooper SD to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.3secs and achieve a top speed of 223km/h while the engine meets EU6 emissions standards and combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 4.2 litres per 100km.

The other three engines in the Mini 5 door line-up are the same as those in the three-door hatch bodystyle — the new three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol and diesel units and the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol which gives Cooper S models 141kW output.

The 5 door shares characteristic Mini brand styling with design features such as hexagonal radiator grille, headlamps and rear lights with wide chrome surround, side turn indicator element and black body bordering.

Honda New Zealand has responded to demand for two-wheel-drive crossover vehicles with a new addition to its CRV range.

Increased choice in the CRV lineup is provided by a higher grade SN model combining a 2.0-litre engine and new continuously variable transmission which is positioned at the important $39,900 price point.

The CRV SN takes styling cues from the top-end CRV Sport with foglights, privacy glass, daytime running lights and chrome door handles as well as the same double-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels seen on the 2.4-litre CRV N model.

Added to the high end design features, the CRV SN adds automatic headlights, active cornering lights, a blind-spot parking mirror, heated windscreen wipers, navigation, smartentry with push button start, ISOFIX child seat attachments and an additional storage pocket below the centre console on the driver’s side.

These additions add up to a top spec package in the CRV SN, so drivers don’t need to compromise on luxury when they opt for a two-wheel-drive SUV. New to the Honda New Zealand lineup is the CVT transmission which is exclusive to the SN model — the 2.0-litre S model continues with sixspeed manual and five-speed automatic choices at $34,900 and $37,900 respectively.

This transmission provides more responsive acceleration than the existing five-speed automatic two wheel drive CRV S, with acceleration figures similar to the previous generation 2011 CRV Sport 2.4L. The addition of a torque converter brings out the 2.0L engine’s best performance with torque improved across the rev range.

The CRV SN benefits from a smoother driving feel. With no need to shift gears, acceleration is instant and seamless and the wider ratio range means off-the-line acceleration is improved. The SN model is also 42kg lighter than the CRV S auto model.

Honda’s CRV SN’s fuel economy in Japanese testing is 6.9 litres per 100km, which is more than a 10 per cent improvement on the 7.7L/100km figure for the CRV S automatic.
