THE GISBORNE HERALD

Outlander LS runs an inside winner An SUV for sealed surfaces

by John Jones MITSUBISHI is providing a real choice for prospective buyers with its two-wheeldrive LS Outlander — a five-seater hatch that has a lot to offer. The new Outlander range includes some top-level four-wheel-drive models but there will always be realists who know that most of their driving is going to be on a sealed road, giving them the opportunity to save some money while not losing out on quality and the appeal of an SUV-style vehicle. If you were playing a game of spotthe-difference it would be difficult — apart from the obvious four-wheel-drive alternative — to get many clues between this and other Outlander models. Mitsubishi has made a huge breakthrough by making a reversing camera standard throughout the range, earning the gratitude not only of drivers with stiff necks, but those who could miss something small in their path such as a small child. In fact, the Mitsubishi catalogue seems to have the words “all models” printed beside a whole list of features such as reverse warning sensors, tinted privacy glass, Bluetooth hands-free phone with steering wheel controls and voice activation, headlamp monitor and auto shut-off, as well as heated rear windows with a timer. The reversing camera is integrated into a 6.1-inch touch screen audio system that is easy to see and operate. To the average driver it is hard to tell the difference between the 2-litre motor in the 2WD LS and the larger 2.4-litre engine used in the four-wheel-drive models in the Outlander range. The LS engine has maximum power of 112kW at 6000rpm and a top torque of 193Nm at 4200. That’s plenty power, even for a vehicle that is substantial by its class standards. In addition, the fuel consumption of only 6.6-litres/100km, which marks a continuing reduction from

previous models, is more than acceptable. The transmission is a six-speed automatic CVT. The drive quality remains high with a suspension that absorbs anything short of a trench on the road. The redesigned cabin is comfortable, the vision is excellent and the vehicle corners and climbs effortlessly. The whole ambience is comfortable and assuring. There are no safety concerns thanks to the presence of ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, active stability control and seven airbags. The Outlander has been a star for Mitsubishi since it was first released in 2006, topping sales for mid-sized SUVs for several years. The new Outlander range combines new technology, smarter thinking and refinement — and this LS 2WD rightfully takes its place in the Outlander fleet. With a recommended retail price of $39,990 plus on road costs it is highly competitive in the popular SUV market.

Car safety

MOTOR-RACING legend Greg Murphy shared his harrowing tale of how he nearly killed a passenger in a car accident when he was 19 with a group of students in a bid to improve young driver safety. Murphy, a four-time winner of Bathurst 1000 and Top Gear Live presenter in 2009 and 2010, addressed about 100 Otumoetai College students last week and gave tips on how to stay safe on New Zealand roads. He then visited Tauranga Girls’ College to promote the road safety awareness programme, led by MTA. Murphy showed images of his first car, a blue Datsun, after he lost control and crashed it into a tree. Murphy was 19, had earlier been drinking and was driving passengers after a party. Seeing his front-seat passenger, and girlfriend at the time, scream with her mouth open and no sound coming out is something Murphy said he would never forget. He said it was his “least proud moment in his life” and it was extremely lucky the accident didn’t claim the girl’s life. He was charged with careless use of a motor vehicle following the accident. Driver inexperience, inattention and poor judgement were some of the topics Murphy covered and said he hoped his story would prevent other young drivers

from making the same mistakes he did. He said some peopleDiamonds might argue Are Forever that going fast around a race track was dangerous, but in a Super Car, drivers wore safety gear, helmets and neck devices, were in special seats and were prepared for high-speed crashes. He said he would rather crash at high speed in his Super Car than at 50kmh on New Zealand roads. “Fifteen people aged 15-24 years have died on New Zealand roads this year and that’s 15 too many,” Murphy said. “And 306 people died last year on our roads, which is down from around 400 the previous year — but this is all unnecessary and it causes a lot of pain. Things could be very different if we put more emphasis on becoming safer drivers.”

Greg Murphy’s top driving tips Keep practising your driving skills. Ensure your car is safe to drive. Stay away from dodgy modifications. Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Do not be distracted while driving. Always have a good peripheral vision and be aware of what’s around you. Make sure your tyres are not bald. Obey the road rules and drive to the conditions.

It had the Austin children’s pedal car on the roof rack, plus a soft toy dog complete with a leather helmet and dust goggles. It has been a real hit with the public wherever it has appeared. The owners — a couple from Morrinsville — even have a tape of a dog barking that is played through an external speaker when the car is on show or passing schools. The Austin A35 followed on from the original A30 series developed and in full production from 1951. It was built with a monocoque body and no chassis. Despite the short overall length of 136 inches (3460mm) the first four-door cars were then followed by a two-door series in 1953 and then an estate car in 1955, plus the pickup or utility version at about the same time. Originally introduced as a successor to the famous Austin 7 at a time when many British owners were changing over from using motorcycles to small cars, these cars were a tremendous success. Between 1922 and 1938, 400,000 of the early Austin 7s were made. A total of 222,264 Austin A 30 and A 35s were built between 1951 and 1956. IT’S all over for New Zealand’s Ben Townley. For a brief time, the only noise that could be heard at the national motocross championship finale in Taupo over Easter Weekend was that of a spanner dropping back into its toolbox. A stunned silence fell over the venue as the circuit commentator interviewed Kiwi sports hero Townley. The 28-year-old former world and New Zealand champion was announcing his sudden, shock retirement from the sport. After a glittering 12-year international career that began in 2001 and yielded an MX2 Motocross World Championship title in 2004, a Supercross Lites East Coast title in the USA in 2007, back-to-back title wins at the NZ Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville in 2012 and 2013 and the national MX1 title last season, the Bay of Plenty rider stunned the large crowd at his hometown track with the revelation that he was retiring from full-time racing, that decision effective immediately. Following the latest in a series of injuries that have frustrated Townley and nstruction files from the Suzuki New caused the stop-start nature of his career,

In 1959 the first exports of Suzuki cars were made, and the ten million milestone was reached in June 1989. The last ten million sales were achieved in less than four years, the fastest rate since the brand began selling cars. Suzuki has actively promoted overseas production bases and currently has 12 automobile production plants in 11 countries. The marque is sold in 179 countries, with models like the Splash, SX4, Grand Vitara, Jimny and Carry van proving popular. New Zealand’s line-up of nine Suzuki models extends from the thrifty $17,250 one litre Alto hatchback to the luxuriously equipped 2.4-litre four-wheel drive Kizashi Sport sedan at $48,500.

They’re raving at V8’s return to Pukekohe

NEW YEAR. NEW TOYOTA.

Judith Collins, Minister of Justice and local MP: “It’s been a fantastic day and I love fast cars — on the track and not on public roads. I can understand well now why people love this. “Watching the skill-sets of these guys out there is unbelievable. They’re professionals, they’re world class and it’s incredibly dangerous but my goodness it’s fun to watch. “This is a great city and good place for this to happen.” Greg Murphy, V8 Supercars driver, former ‘King of Pukekohe’, said the event had done what supposed to do. THERE has been much discussion around the return of the V8 Supercars to their spiritual home at Pukekohe Raceway. Some have said it should have gone somewhere else, some have said it should have never left and some have even queried the grading of the circuit. What we can tell you is that the project came in on time and on budget. Now here’s little tidbit — there were two project costs. One was for the $6.6 million which got you X and another for $8 million that got you X plus Y on top. Now here’s the thing — all the stakeholders involved went for the most cost-effective, so the $6.6 million avenue got the nod. But we got the $8 million model with all the extra bells and whistles. The motorsport fans of New Zealand voted with their feet and turned up in bumper crowds for the Kiwi round of the series. And rather than telling all our readers what Driven thought of the three days of racing, we asked these interested parties:

Jamie Whincup during the ITM 400 in Auckland at Pukekohe Park Raceway. Cars here. We’re doing what we planned to and it’s a great circuit for these cars. It is the single biggest event New Zealand has, just look at the number of people here.” David Malone, CEO V8 Supercars said he thought it had been a fantastic three days. “Seeing the crowds here over the HASTINGS weekend all enjoying themselves, the big numbers and great racing.
