Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa is here
A “spectacular” Christmas parade featuring 22 creative floats, pipe band, pooches, ponies and vintage vehicles enthralled young and old alike in Beachlands last Saturday. “It was spectacular and I think our community is brilliant - everyone came together so generously,” says Beachlands Community Trust ceo Jenny Carter. “The event has started to bed in as a wonderful tradition for our community.” Saturday’s event is the second Santa parade the trust has organised. The parade’s guest of honour from the North Pole arrived in the back of an open top convertible Hillman Minx. Jenny told the PC Times: “I think we have the best finishing view of any Santa parade in the whole of Auckland.” The parade began at the Beachlands Domain and progressed down Wakelin Rd and through the Beachlands shopping centre before finishing at the Sunkist Bay reserve beside the Beachlands Log Cabin where the Christmas@Sunkist cel-

Criminals targeted the Pohutukawa Coast in an overnight crime spree last week. Popular Maraetai waterfront eatery The Bach’N Cafe was broken into in the early hours of Thursday 4 December. The offenders used what Police believe is a hammer, or similar object, to smash through the front door, leaving a trail of blood through the shop. “They cut themselves as they broke in and forensics are seeing if there are any matches on our Police system,” says Beachlands constable Aaron Mataira. Alcohol and food was taken from the Bach, but it was business as usual the next morning as owners and staff cleared up the mess and welcomed in clientele. An attempted burglary in Te Pene Rd Maraetai the same night was thwarted when (three lucky winners already) the owners of the property heard and saw three people outside, one trying to lever a door open. When the offenders realised the owners were home, they departed. A Subaru Imprezza was stolen from Rewa Rd in Maraetai and another vehicle in the driveway graffitied. A Mitsubishi Legnum station wagon was stolen from Cherrie Rd in Beachlands. • TO PAGE 3

Entrants wowed the crowd and the overall winner was Stephanie Rudd (10) of Beachlands. An evening concert completed the day’s activities, against a sunset backdrop. “It was a relaxed family affair and I think everyone appreciated the Christmas carols which

So, just who IS running the show around here? THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON email@example.com
At a time when Auckland Council is drastically cutting costs I did raise my eyebrows at a full page ad it took out in the NZ Herald at least twice to explain how rate increases will affect ratepayers. It was in the form of a letter signed by Stephen Town, the Chief Executive of Auckland Council. I do have to wonder why a council employee is writing such a letter and not the mayor, or any other elected councillor. No doubt Stephen Town will argue that his letter is simply explaining changes in how the rating system works and how that will impact on ratepayers and, therefore, it isn’t a political message. I would argue that the very fact his letter is in the newspaper at all is a political message of sorts. This is particularly so when it contains statements such as: “Our focus will continue to be on keeping rate rises low and saving costs. We have already identified savings of $2.3 billion over the next 10 years through greater efficiency and working smarter” and “our finances are in good shape, evidenced by our AA credit rating.” These contain contestable statements and are, therefore,

political in nature. They should be made by an elected politician, not by an un-elected paid employee. A couple of weeks ago our local councillor, Bill Cashmore, wrote a lengthy article in the PC Times, complete with graph, explaining why rates are going up and defending the council’s policy decisions. Regardless of whether you agree or don’t agree with what Bill wrote, the fact is he recognises that he is the one we elect to represent us on Auckland Council and, therefore, it is his job to explain and defend council policy. If we don’t agree with him, then a couple of years from now we can vote him out of office and someone else in. We don’t get to do that with StephenTown. Bill Cashmore recognises the importance of this process and is willing to put his political reputation on the line. This process has a name. It’s called “democracy.” Stephen Town’s letter in the NZ Herald, presumably paid for with our money, is part of a growing trend in New Zealand politics. This trend sees elected politicians dodging their responsibility to front up to the New Zealand public and instead put this task in the hands of departmental or ministry heads. How many times over the past couple of years have we seen Government ministers shrugging their shoulders and saying something along the lines of “It’s nothing to do with me, it’s an internal departmental matter.”

Lighting an outdoor fire on rural land is still possible but a permit is required for fires in the open air. Please don’t get me wrong, I very much respect the sacrifice of others. My family has served from Waterloo, the New Zealand Wars, World War Two (lost my uncle in Crete), J force, Korea, Borneo, Malaysia, Vietnam and
Bosnia. In fact my brothers and I were the first not to have to serve in over a 150 years – a proud fact for my family. If you need things to remember the past sacrifice please do it in a positive way: put our community money towards speech competitions or education scholarships in their name, not another garden or monument. We have plenty of those. BRETT TURNER Beachlands

UNLIKE THE Drover family, the man from Nova got a less than friendly reception when he confronted me while I was unloading shopping from the car prior to making dinner (my wife was unwell!) at about 6pm one evening recently. I suggested that his sales pitch would be better received at a more civilised hour. What I should have said was: “Give over, Mr Nova, at least wait until dinner is over..and you can forget about getting any of the pavlova.” But I’m never quick enough to think of these things at the time.

Politicians are elected as the people’s representatives. As such it is their job to front up to explain, and take responsibility for, what their departments and ministries are doing. What next? How long will it be before we see letters in the newspaper from the Chief of Defence Force explaining why we are sending troops to the Middle East, or a letter from the Director of the Security Intelligence Service explaining why it’s necessary to spy on New Zealanders? In these times of council austerity, I question why the Chief Executive of Auckland Council is spending our money to explain policy that should be being explained by the people who make that policy – the people we elect.

New location for planned war memorial
The Anzac Parade subcommittee planning a war memorial at Sunkist Bay Reserve, Beachlands, is now focussing its efforts on a new site next to the Log Cabin. The original plan was for a memorial on the road reserve at the end of Wakelin Rd between the end of the seal and the cliff. However, Auckland Council has vetoed this – and another potential site further along the reserve clifftop – due to concerns over potential clifftop erosion. However, it does support a new site on the seaward side of the Log Cabin on the slightly sloping area between the end of the carpark, the path, and the grass bank leading down to the bay. The project is supported by the Manukau Beautification Trust which has made a one-
twentieth scale model of the proposed memorial. The new design is a bit different from the original concept. This plan features a W shaped wall with seating on both sides, facing both towards the sea and towards the road. There would be a flagpoles for the New Zealand flag. Plaques at either end would list battle sites in the First World War, Second World War and possibly – in consultation with local iwi – the New Zealand Wars. At some point it is also hoped to have a garden behind the wall next to the Log Cabin. The project will require various council consents, but this should be easier now the site is on a parks reserve rather than the original road reserve. The committee also hopes to get some funding from the Frank-

An open invitation is extended to the Pohutukawa Coast community to enjoy the inaugural Coastal Christmas Glow Celebration this Sunday. Hosted by the Beachlands Baptist Church, the free event is a contemporary one hour carol service for the whole family. “Our auditorium will be transformed into a Christmas wonderland under the soft glowing lights of hundreds of glow sticks,” says pastor Neil Hamilton. “The evening is our gift to the community.” The event will feature free glow sticks, carols, the Christmas story and performances from several community groups, followed by a free sausage sizzle. A collection to support Tear Fund’s “Light to the World” campaign will be taken. The glow celebration is from 4.30-5.30pm at 59 Third View Ave, Beachlands.

A number of overnight vehicle breakins were also reported to the Police. “It’s that time of year when more people are coming out here targetting the area,” says Aaron. “There’s been an increase in burglaries right across the Counties Manukau East area.” He suggests the best defence is to ensure house doors and windows are locked. Meanwhile, the Clevedon Cafe was also broken into early Monday morning this week. Thieves triggered an alarm at 4am. They smashed the glass
front door and made off with some alcohol.

New grass arena popular with riders The first major show jumping event on Clevedon Pony Club’s new grass arena was a huge success. The event attracted 180 riders of all levels, including international riders John Cottle and Kate Lambie. James Cottle’s meticulous planning and course design catered for ponies through to hacks. The grass surface looked spectacular thanks to the grooming efforts of Nick Jones from Hololio Polo Park. Top riders found the grass, grown on a Woodhill sands base, a perfect surface evidenced by some beautiful jumping rounds. Clevedon Pony Club member Fran Heenan won the Pony Show Jumping Championship, and local rider Laura McGregor won the Hack championship. Prizes were sponsored by Animal Stuff and Clevedon Rural Supplies. The competition also included a trial for the North Island Pony Club Show Jumping Champs held in Cambridge in January 2015, where six riders in various age groups from the Manukau District take on the best in the country. More new road names The new Jack Lachlan Drive subdivision at Beachlands has two more new road names. “Motukaraka Drive” and “Kaiawa Street” have been approved by the Franklin Local Board. The names are those offered by the developer, Beachlands Avenues Ltd, after consultation with Ngai Tai ki Tamaki. Motukaraka Drive was put forward by Ngai Tai’s Dave Beamish. It is named after Motukaraka Island, located off the point at Beachlands and also known locally as Flat Island. Kaiawa Street is in recognition of the Kaiawa Gardens at the Beachlands School, planted and maintained by the pupils. Alternative names proposed, but not used, were “George Town Drive” after George Town who purchased the farm where Formosa Golf Club and Pine Harbour marina is currently sited; and “Doidge Avenue” after the Doidge family who has been on the school roll since 1926

Maraetai - For Sale: Price By Negotiation I love a house that is full of surprises and offers something out of the ordinary. Such is the case with this contemporary two storey home built to take advantage of wonderful views from Omana Heights. The home has great road appeal with aggregate driveway raised gardens and some mature palms and ferns. There’s a big entranceway with two flights of stairs to the left and a bedroom to the right. The entranceway opens to a downstairs living room with sliding door access on two sides to an extensive wrap-round deck with plenty of room for entertaining and a sheltered area from wind and sun. An interesting feature is the small sink and bench unit in one corner of the living room, perhaps hinting at future bar area or guest room? Then through to another bedroom and big, spacious bathroom. There’s internal access to a carpeted two car garage with storage under the stairs – a wine cellar perhaps? At the rear of the garage is a separate laundry with access to the outside utility area. Back to the main entrance and up the stairs to a more formal living area, but one very similar to the one downstairs, except with a fireplace cuts across one corner. Again there is plenty of outside access, this time to an second storey balcony. Unusually for these days, the kitchen is a separate room. It’s big with plenty of bench space, wall oven, flat top stove and rangehood. A door from the kitchen
leads along the upstairs mezzanine overlooking the entranceway and across to the other side where there is a separate formal dining room with access to a small juliet balcony at the front of the house. There’s a big master bedroom with its own deck access, walk in wardrobe and ensuite. A small hallway allows access to separate toilet and bathroom with lots of cupboard space along the way to another bedroom. As you would expect, it enjoys fabulous views and is designed to take maximum advantage of indooroutdoor living. The upstairs and downstairs living areas, the separate kitchen and the walk along the mezzanine to get to the dining room makes for an unusual design that allows for distinct separation of cooking and formal dining from the living area. It’s a change from the open plan living-kitchen-dining arrangement which is the norm for most homes these days. I’m seeing a family home – but perhaps one for an older family with teenage or young adult kids who want some private space of their own. ~ Duncan Pardon

Christmas celebrations at Beachlands
POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (December 12th 2014) 9
Wanted: Clevedon, Coast players to learn lacrosse Hunua’s Mark Freemon played a key role in establishing the sport of lacrosse in Auckland way back in 2000. Now he plans to get some teams going in Clevedon and possibly at Te Puru. Mark and several other expats got together at that time to help establish four clubs. Now there are five clubs, men’s and women’s teams, a thriving secondary school league and the sport is also starting to take hold in other main centres. Here in Auckland the sport has not yet made it this far east, so now Mark plans to get it established here in the community he loves. Mark, an American, started building his home in Hunua the same day terrorists crashed their planes into the New York towers. His family has been here ever since and have children at Clevedon School. “I love this community. They are good people, hard working, family orientated and love their sport,” says Mark, who plans to spend the Christmas holidays getting
some local teams established with the aim of playing the second half of the lacrosse season at the A & P Showgrounds before winter sports take over the fields again. He says there is plenty of room and it won’t interfere with cricket. He will use the same strategy he used to help get the sport established in Auckland – from the top down, starting with an adult over 16 team, then to 13-15 year olds, and down to a 11-12 year old team. “The big focus is on getting older players to start with. I want to get them some friendlies by the second half of the season. I’ve put information through the school, I’ll be talking to Te Puru and your newspaper. Anyone interested in playing can contact me and once I see what we’ve got to work with, I hope to get something going by the last week of December,” says Mark. The strategy of focusing on 16 year olds and upwards first is so that they, in turn, can manage
and coach some junior teams once they have gained some knowledge and experience. It’s not like rugby where many parents can coach because they have knowledge of the game having played themselves as kids, says Mark. Very few people he comes across know anything at all about lacrosse. “It’s a sport that has everything – contact, and tactical fast thinking. A small guy can cut-up a big guy because it’s about smarts, not brute force,” says Mark. He says it would make an ideal alternative to touch as a summer training for out-of-season rugby players as it’s a game that requires broad on-field vision and the ability to make quick decisions. Lacrosse is a team sport that involves a fistsized hard rubber ball that is thrown, caught, and shot using lacrosse sticks. Lacrosse sticks are about a metre long and consist of a shaft (usually metal) and a
plastic head that is strung with mesh. Goalie sticks and men’s defensive sticks are bigger. Players carry and pass the ball in order to score goals. In men’s lacrosse helmets, armpads, gloves, and other padding are used as body checking and stick checking is legal. Body checking is not legal in women’s lacrosse. The pitch is THANK YOU!

PAUL MILLAR MEMORIAL FISHING CONTEST
The annual Paul Millar Memorial Trophy Fishing Tournament is being held this Sunday, December 14. Hosted by the Bosun’s Fishing Club at the Prospect of Howick Hotel, the fishing tournament honours club stalwart Paul Millar who tragically passed away in 1999. “Paul was a really good guy who loved fishing and was involved with the club for a long time,” says contsest organisor Barry O’Shaughnessy. “This is our way to remember him and all he did for the club.” Barry is expecting a good turnout for this Sunday’s fishing competition. He says with some $4000 worth of prizes to be won, the contest holds plenty of incentive to enjoy a day’s fishing before Christmas. “With the high price of snapper in the shops this is also a great way to buy some nice fresh snapper at a great price in our fish auction after the contest,” says Barry. A $1000 cash prize is up for grabs for the mystery weight snapper. Contest fish species include Snapper, Kingfish, Kahawai, Trevally and John Dory. Fishing starts at 4am and ends at 4pm with the weigh in back in the Garden Bar at the Bosuns Bar at the Prospect of Howick from 4-5pm. Entry fee: $30 per line . Tickets available from The Prospect of Howick Hotel and The Big Fish Bait and Tackle Co. All fish will be auctioned and the proceeds donated to Coastguard Howick.

28 YEARS SERVICING WHITFORD, BEACHLANDS, MARAETAI
Whitford Village now has its own boutique Pilates, Barre and Yoga studio to revitalise the body and rejuvenate the mind. Pohutukawa Coast friends and business partners Rochelle Wilson and Rachael Wilson (no relation) have combined their passion for pilates to create Reform - Pilates, Barre and Yoga, a beautifully appointed studio offering small group classes as well as one-on-one instruction in three forms of low impact exercise. They took the name Reform from the verb meaning: “to condition, to srengthen, to balance, to form again.” “Pilates is amazing - it’s a wonderful mind-body workout that delivers profound results regardless of age or gender,” explains Rochelle. “It’s especially beneficial for strengthening the core and pelvic floor area. If you have strong core muscles then everything else follows.” Rachael says Pilates, while being a complete exercise regime on its
own, also complements other forms of fitness training. “A lot of professional athletes inlcuding the All Blacks do pilates. Pilates is able to strengthen the core and deep muscles that are essential for correct postural alignment and stability which in turn helps prevent injury.” The pair met at a local gym where Rochelle was a PT trainer. They soon discovered they have plenty in common. Not only do they share the same last name and same initials, they are also the same age, and each is happily married with two children. Rachael lives in Maraetai and Rochelle in Beachlands. They also realised they both practised Pilates and really believed in its benefits to the point where they wanted to help others enjoy those benefits. “There is so much high impact exercise around which is really great for some people but there are a lot of people of all ages who prefer low impact.” The pair are both ful-

Yellow dot mystery
A rash of large highlighter yellow dots appearing randomly on Pohutukawa Coast letterboxes has Police mystified. “There have been a number of these stick on dots reported on people’s letterboxes in Whitford and some in Maraetai,” says Beachlands constable Steve Webb. “We would like to hear from anyone who knows why they have appeared or who has put them there.” He says there has been one reported sighting of a male in a white van with a ladder on the roof, allegedly putting a sticker on a letter box before driving off. Enquiries to NZ Post, Auckland Council and local bus companies have provided no answers, says Steve. He could not discount a theory that the dots may have been put there to identify potential targets for burglary. If residents find a yellow dot on their letterbox, Police recommend they remove it. Meanwhile, if you can help solve the mystery call the Beachlands Police station on 536-6130.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM WHITFORD Frozen wonderland comes to Whitford The Whitford hall was transormed into a winter wonderland for Whitford Early Learning Centre’s end of year Frozen concert and ball last Friday. The event’s theme was chosen by the children because of their interest in the Disney movie of the same name. Sixty three-to -five -year-olds and their mums, dads and grandparents packed out the hall for the early evening show. Teachers and children had enjoyed making sparkly snowflakes and other decorations and dressing up for the ocassion, says centre owner Kim O’Neill. The younger children from the Pukeko room performed the aptly named Pukeko Stomp and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star before the kindergarten children took the stage. Dressed to the nines, the boys performed a haka after singing the national anthem before the girls stole the show. All dressed in flowing Frozen princess costumes, they put their hearts and souls into their rendition of the Frozen movie hit song Let It Go to much parental applause. The concert was followed by party food and the much anticipated Frozen disco ball. “It was a fantastic performance by all the children,” says Kim. “We have some amazingly creative teachers who put a lot of time into making the decorations and working with the children to make the event a real success.” With 150 children enrolled aged from three months to five years, Whitford Early Learning Centre is the longest serving private pre-school on the Coast.

Bay residents ready for Christmas in park
Residents of Kawakawa Bay are relishing a return to a “Christmas in the Park” with the traditionally themed Yuletide event coming to the village green on Sunday December 21 at 7:30pm. Held previously in the Kawakawa Bay Community Hall, the organising committee hassignalled a new lease of life by stepping back to an outdoor event. According to organiser Judi Cranston, “Late December is traditionally risky weather-wise but the concept of a relaxing outdoor family evening event is too fantastic to miss. “We still have the hall as back up but this year we really want to give something special back

THANK YOU TO HELPING HAND TRUST
Dear Pohutukawa Coast Helping Hand Trust, Thank you for sponsoring Maraetai Beach School. You made it possible for our seniors to go to camp, you made it possible for our young people to have an incredible experience of the outdoors. At camp we learnt a heap of cool things, and without your help we wouldn’t have learnt how to build a raft or fire an arrow - and we wouldn’t have found new hobbies. Your help really means a lot to us, our parents and our school. Thanks again for your sponsorship, Yours sincerely: Year 7 and 8 Students of Maraetai Beach School.
