The biennial Yarns in Barns Festival of Reading, a Right Royal Knees Up celebration of the Monarch’s birthday and a range of exhibitions will keep locals and visitors to the Wairarapa busy over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Yarns in Barns runs from June 1 – 10, however during Queen’s Birthday weekend there will be five events held across the region. Highlights include an evening with former Miss Universe Lorraine Downes, speaking with broadcaster Kerre McIvor on June 1st at the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park in Masterton. Life, Loss, Love which recounts her life from the heady days of Miss Universe to the tragic death of her soulmate Martin Crowe. The following day at 2pm, New

Zealand farming legend Mark Warren will share his off-roading, hill-seeking and muddy-morning adventures from his book Many a Muddy Morning at the Strang Woolshed in Gladstone. While on Queen’s Birthday Monday, award winning author Diana Wichtel will discuss her book Driving to Treblinka. This talk will be held from 2pm – 3.30pm at Hedley’s Bookshop in Masterton. Also on at Aratoi: Wairarapa Museum of Art and History in Masterton is a range of exhibitions including Adrian Jackman: Minimal Wave Revisited. For more details: visit www. wairarapanz.com.

History of the Fell Locomotives and Railway Experience the fully restored ‘Fell’ locomotive H 199 Mont Cenis, the only locomotive of its type in the world, ‘Fell’ brake-van F 210, and photographs of the famous Rimuta-

ka Incline, New Zealand’s steepest railway line from 1878 to 1955. ‘Fell’ brake-van F 210 arrived in Featherston in 1995 and was also restored by Society members.

The Society won awards for the restoration of H 199 and F 210, and in 1995 the Museum was voted the ‘Best Heritage Experience’ at the Wellington Tourism Awards.

Kotare Art Studio and Gallery, Greytown Kotare Art is the working studio of Greytown artist Sandra Wong; best known for her New Zealand bird and tree paintings, owls, anthropomorphic steam punk characters and the occasional abstract.

Kotare Art is also home to a growing number of works by local and regional artists, many of whom are friends that Sandra has known for the past 20 years, bringing together

an ecclectic range of works from outdoor sculptures, sterling silver birds, art books, children’s picture books, oil and acrylic paintings through to private art by creatives in the film and graphics industries.
