OUT&about ANZAC Service By Brian Sheppard

On April 25, residents of the Malvina Major Retirement Village gathered for an ANZAC service, to pay their respects to soldiers who have died in the defence of New Zealand, and in its overseas peacekeeping duties. The service, accompanied by music from the Salvation Army Band, was led by Major Roger Horton of the Salvation Army. Village residents also took part and contributed their own wartime memories and reflections. The guest speaker was Major Mark Richards (RNZAMC), who reflected on his time in the armed forces and of the sacrifices made by others. This was an important opportunity for residents, many of whom are no longer able to take part in an open-air dawn service. It was an emotional time for many, bringing back raw memories of the tragic loss of family members and friends but they came to show their respect for the sacrifices that those soldiers had made.
