Hutt South candidates had the chance to strut their stuff in front of the Wainuiomata community last Friday. Labour’s Ginny Anderson and National’s Chris Bishop were present at Development Wainuiomata’s Business Breakfast, as were newcomers Richard Warwick from The Opportunities Party and Green Party candidate Virginia Horrocks. The event provided locals with a chance to find out what made each of the candidates tick and hear what they had to say. Members of the public were also allowed to ask questions and get to know the people hoping to represent Wainuiomata beyond

their electoral hoardings. Chris Bishop opened the morning and said that although National had not always been well represented in Wainuiomata that was something he hoped to change. He also mentioned how he was focused on seeing a student discount for public transport, the state of Wainuiomata Mall, and the idea of a retirement village in the community. Virginia Horrocks was next and jumped straight into how clean water and enviro-friendly businesses around Lower Hutt were crucial. Richard Warwick said although he was completely new to politics, the motivation was to be transparent and know what’s going on in the community.

Ginny Anderson was the last to speak however said she had a vision for the Hutt Valley and young people in Wainuiomata was a big focus. “I want to know there’s a future here for people in the Hutt,” Anderson said. She mentioned how important being up front in leading people into trades and getting people into good community schemes was. New Zealand’s next General Election will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, with voting beginning on September 11.  To enrol, check, or update your voting information, and for more information, got to elections. org.nz.
