Wainuiomata the new Park Lane
Craft and design students recognised
Wainuiomata could be a feature stop on Wellington’s own version of Monopoly. The announcement that New Zealand’s capital would be remembered on its own Monopoly board was made earlier this year. Stuff.co.nz reported last week that Facebook voting put the suburb among the three most popular choices, alongside The Roxy cinema, and Cuba
The only awards in New Zealand which recognise both design and craft disciplines, will once again be looking for student entries during the month of September. Are you a current tertiary student or 2016 graduate, then this is your chance to enter the 2017 ECC New Zealand Student Craft / Design Awards. Entries are open from September 2 in the fields of lighting, furniture and product design, ceramics, fashion, textile design, and jewellery – and close on September 30. A formal awards ceremony will take place at the ECC Wellington store on November 2.
pected to hit the shelves later this year. An Auckland version of Monopoly launched in 2013 and a New Zealand edition also exists. Winning Moves will be the manufacturer of the official Wellington version of Monopoly under license from Hasbro. Winning Moves managing director Reid Herbert said, the spirit and shape of this custom-
ised edition will remain the same as the traditional game, but now you would be able to buy and own your favourite Wellington landmarks with Monopoly money. Monopoly first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today it is played in 111 countries and enjoyed in over 43 different languages.
New community enterprise hub opens in Lower Hutt
Next business breakfast scheduled
A run-down former factory in Lower Hutt has a new lease of life as a social enterprise business incubator, thanks to an award-winning community organisation. The new Re-makery Space in Epuni is the headquarters for the Common Unity Project Aotearoa, a charitable trust that has been operating in Lower Hutt since 2012. It is home to projects including a koha café, honey production, a sewing enterprise that repurposes old corporate uniforms, a food share store and grocery co-op, and a backyard farming initiative. Re-makery Space will be officially open September 3. Founder Julia Milne said the Re-Makery is dedicated to providing the resources necessary for people to create prosperous, resilient livelihoods. It builds on the success of initiatives such as the Epuni Primary School garden and food production project. “It’s inspiring to be part of a community that’s taking the lead to create sustainable, inclusive solutions for itself,” Julia said. Youth awards launched Hutt City Council Mayor Ray Wallace and National list MP Chris Bishop teamed up to launch this year’s Hutt City Youth Awards. The awards were started in 2015 to recognise amazing achievements by young people in Lower Hutt. Nominations opened on Monday, August 28. Mayor Ray Wallace said that he was thrilled in 2015 and 2016 by the talent and commitment of the nominees. “It really is fantastic to see what young people are doing in our city,” Wallace said. The awards once again offer eight categories including leadership, contribution to sport, the arts, entrepreneurship, embracing diversity, science and technology, service to the community, and overcoming adversity. An awards ceremony will be held on October 26.

Aotearoa has been converting the old Waiwhetu Road plaster moldings factory, which was started by Fred Biggins in 1943, into their new hub.
In total, 18 enterprises already share the 1600 squaremetre space. Julia said the foundation of the Re-Makery was built
