Wainuiomata shows off its volunteering and community spirit Continued from page 1. Brent Ludlam was recognised for his involvement in Youth Activities, and Gabriel Tupou, former Wainuiomata High School student and Wainuiomata Community Board member, picked up the Youth Services Award. The Rimutaka Forest Park Trust has won the heritage and environment category of the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards (Lower Hutt), and Sport Wainuiomata Inc picked up top spot in the Sport and Leisure category. Hutt City Council Mayor Ray Wallace said it was an exciting night for the Hutt Valley and especially Wainuiomata, dominating the awards this year. He said the awards were an annual opportunity to recognise individuals and groups across the city that help to make Lower Hutt such a great community. “Wainuiomata was definitely front and centre this year,” Wallace said. “Gabriel is bright and community focused; the people

from Rimutaka Forest Park Trust are dedicated and it was really good to see them recognised; Brent lives in Stokes Valley but works in Wainuiomata and that shows commitment. It was a great night for Wainuiomata.

“It was great to formally recognise the selfless time and energy devoted by some to the benefit and welfare of others. Our volunteers make our community a better, brighter, more vibrant place in which to live. They are our local heroes.”

Other award winners included: Civic Awards Jan Heine, Community Services; and Merilyn Merrett, Community Services. Hutt Safe City Awards Community Safety Camera System Search and Download team, Organisation/Group Award; Dale Laurent, Individual Award; and Graham Smeaton, Police Area Commanders Award.
