A group of girls have created a book to educate children on the harmful effects of plastic. Island Bay residents Sarah Choice and Tanisha Ramji, Miramar resident Sophie De Gregorio and Taylor Smith and Bri Mitchell wrote The Adventures of Katie and Tama: The Power of Plastic as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme this year. The girls’ team, known as Blue Print Books, scored in the top eight out of 105 teams in the Dragon’s Den from Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Bri described The Adventures of Katie and Tama: The Power of Plastic as a mix of a colouring book and a story aiming to teach children about how littering could affect wild life. “It’s a mix of a colouring book and a book to read about two kids, Katie and Tama, who are going to litter on the beach but then a Taniwha tells them not to. “We’re looking to change the behaviours of children to create positive change for the environment,” she explained.

Sophie said the girls had chosen plastic pollution as something to focus on because it was a current issue. “It’s been something that’s been on the news every day and we recognise it can be a big issue,” she said. “We want to support the book launch by doing a beach clean-up, which we want to make into a family day for children to enjoy,” Tanisha added. Bri said it was important for the girls that they did something that raised awareness about an issue, not just start a business. “An important message we want to get out is that this issue is real and it is happening,” Taylor said. “We brought in Maori culture to make it relevant for our New Zealand audience.” “New Zealand has such a clean, green brand. We want to keep it that way,” Sophie added. The Adventures of Katie and Tama: The Power of Plastic would be available through the Sustainability Trust’s Eco store and on the Blue Print Books website.  For more information head to blueprint.mystorbie.com/
