HighLight to shine a light on Alzheimers Hutt City Council is proud to announce Alzheimers Wellington as the charity partner for HighLight: Carnival of Lights. This partnership will be on display with the incredible Affinity light sculpture.

The sculpture is a web of vividly coloured orbs representing neurons in a human brain. When viewers touch the orbs, it sets off a sound and light display representing rapidfire transmission of messages between neurons. It has pre-

viously been on display in Auckland and Rotorua, and HighLight will be its first visit to the lower North Island. Anne Schumacher, chief executive Alzheimers Wellington said: “We are pleased and proud to be the charity

partner for HighLight.” “Our aim is to shine light on one of the country’s most common - but frequently overlooked - health conditions, and to let more people know about the free services and support we offer to people diagnosed

with dementia, and their family and friends. Hutt City Council mayor Ray Wallace said having a charity like Alzheimers Wellington as a partner makes the event even more significant and meaningful to our community.

From the

Reporter’s desk Every week our reporter Daniel Whitfield breaks news stories and meets locals throughout Wainuiomata. Each week he also shares a few tales from his travels. It was great to meet Keira Smith, the young Wainuiomata runner on the front page, this week. We only spoke for about half an hour but what an inspiration. Not only does she do well at the sports she participates in, she’s driven and has a goal of attending the Olympics. I remember having those dreams of representing New Zealand – but I don’t think I’ll have the chance now. I mean I’m still active and healthy, but gone are the days of me ever going to the Olympics. I really believe that Keira can fulfill her dreams. She’s only 11-years-old and has a great future ahead if she stays focused and takes the right steps. Another highlight of the week was hearing about the boost in housing throughout

the Hutt Valley More than 700 extra homes; wow! I agree with what Mayor Ray Wallace had to say: “Residential growth coupled with smart investment in recreation and community facilities is making a real difference to our city. We’re on a roll – it’s an exciting time to live in Lower Hutt.” I mean New Zealand needs to sort out its housing problem if our population continues to grow and I think this is a great way for the Hutt Valley to do its part in tackling the issue.  If you have anything interesting you would like to see in the Wainuiomata News – be it sport, arts, or a significant anniversary, get in touch by emailing wainui@wsn.co.nz.
