Jazz nights out

By Dan Taylor

Jazzy tunes filled Wellington’s streets, bookstores, churches and bars last weekend as the capital hosted its annual Jazz Festival, with over 100 gigs in five days. Around 250 musicians from both New Zealand and internationally descended came to play their music to jazz-enthusiastic crowds. The Wellington Night Market in lower Cuba Street hosted several open air events on Saturday

night, with Black Spider Stomp, The Front-liners and AfroKan taking the stage on a crisp winters evening. On Sunday Kelburn Village Pub played host to two festival events, including Wellington Heads who played to an appreciative crowd on Sunday afternoon – one couple even braving the standing room only space to dance enthusiastically. The Drinking and Dancing Society took to the stage afterwards with their New Orleans style jazz blues.
