Labour’s Kiwi-Build could have a flow-on effect, if implemented By Dave Crampton
A Labour party announcement to build on vacant housing New Zealand land in the Hutt Valley could have a ripple effect in Wainuiomata if the policy is implemented, local politicians say. On April 12, Labour Party Leader Andrew Little visited a vacant Housing NZ section in Epuni and announced that Labour will build a mix of 400 state houses and affordable KiwiBuild homes in the Hutt Valley in its first term in government, should it be elected on September 23. Housing will be a mix of two-to three bedroom homes, and one bedroom units, costing between $200,000 to $350,000. Housing in the Hutt Valley is in crisis with many Kiwi families being priced out of both home ownership and the rental market. House prices have soared 25 per cent in the past year, and rents are up 9 per cent.” Mr Little said. Wainuiomata’s politicians welcomed the news, and hoped that such a move would curb rising process in the area. “I think it will have a flow-on effect and Wainuiomata prices may stabilise,” Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace said. Out-going Hutt South MP Trevor Mallard, who was raised
in a two-bedroom house in Wainuiomata, agreed. “The flow-on effect is likely to happen- this is like the houses that were started in Wainuiomata,” he said. Mr Little and Mr Mallard were joined by Housing Minister Phil Twyford, Rimutaka MP Chris Hipkins and Hutt South candidate Virginia Andersen for the announcement, just under a week after the St David’s church housing protest in Naenae, 2km down the road. In February, Mr Little said 36 Housing NZ properties were vacant in the Hutt for over a year, with some ready to le – but now 266 Hutt families are on a waiting list for a state house. “I know of one family that has been living in a garage for six months.” Wainuiomata ward councillor Josh Briggs also welcomed the announcement, saying that the homes will be for those who do not have the opportunity to qualify for social housing, and those who could not afford current housing prices. He also said the announcement will have an impact on house prices in Wainuiomata. As well as building on housing New Zealand land, Labour said it would also look at opportunities to build in new developments around the Hutt, including in Wainuiomata.
