Kelly Ayres - top student, top mechanic Continued from page 1. The mature student was one of the top students in her class and now has her first ever full time job not far from home. However, she was initially apprehensive when she knocked on owner Phil Wyburn’s door to ask for some work experience. “I was really nervous, but I was like, yes, sweet, three month’s work experience – I was stoked.” “I never thought it was realistic, really.” She need not have worried. Phil says she’s the best apprentice he has seen in five years, and

knew after a couple of visits that she would be a solid employee. “I knew the second time she came in – her ability to learn is high,” he said. “She picked up things really quickly, she’s extremely motivated and keen to learn.” But Kelly said Phil has made it easy. “Phil is a good teacher – it’s awesome - he knows everything about everything.” After her work experience, at one day a week, she was offered a full time job and is now studying for her Level 4 certificate to be a fully qualified automotive

technician and do warrants of fitness unsupervised. Kelly says her family is looking forward to that. “They just can’t wait until I can do a warrant – maybe they think it’s going to be free,” she said. But just two years ago, when Kelly was pouring drinks in a bar part time , she would never have thought she would be on the way to becoming an automotive technician. When she found herself without a job she joked to a Work and Income case manager that she could be a mechanic.

She got some assistance from Work and Income, entered Weltec, and got more financial assistance when she started work, which she used on tools. Phil, who owns Gavin Shute Autos with his partner Sheena, has been working 12-hour days, but thanks to Kelly that has been reduced. It is Kelly’s attitude that impresses Phil. She is hard working and hasn’t missed her 8am starts once. But she will not miss her visits to Work and Income. “I don’t have to go back there again,” she said.

Wainuiomata will be holding two services on Anzac Day this Tuesday. While a parade and dawn service will be held at the Cenotaph, adjacent to the Lower Hutt War Memorial Library, the parade in Wainuiomata will be later that morning. The 6am Dawn Service will

be held at the Wainuiomata War Memorial in Queen Street, with a parade at 10.55am. The parade will assemble at the BP Service Station before moving onto the War Memorial for an 11am service. Services and parades will also be held at Naenae/Taita, Petone, Eastbourne and Stokes Valley.

Hutt City Mayor Ray Wallace is hoping many attend these services and says a key reason for the development of the Anzac Lawn outside the War Memorial Library, two years ago, was to make space for larger Anzac Day attendances. “The Anzac story is a deep part of us and its timeless rel-
