Summer series set to shine Locals wishing to spend some time in the evening sun in January can head to Wellington’s Botanic Gardens. The Meridian Gardens Magic showcases New Zealand talent over three weeks on the Botanic Garden’s Soundshell Stage. The annual free concert series presented by Wellington City Council, and supported by Meridian Energy, includes performances by The Warratahs, The Maori SideSteps, August Fields, and Jesse Sheehan. Adding to the atmosphere will be a series of light installations from Massey’s School of Design
students – one of which is an installation tribute to Kaikoura. Mayor of Wellington Justin Lester said the event had become an iconic part of Wellington over the years. “Summer City is celebrating 38 years of supporting the arts and artists, and developing the reputation as the creative capital of New Zealand – and much of that has occurred on the Botanic Garden Soundshell stage,” he said. “Whatever the act, whatever the weather, Wellingtonians turn up in their thousands to this festival and there’s always something for everyone.”
“For us, Meridian Gardens Magic is all about bringing together the Wellington community to enjoy home-grown music and art in the beautiful surrounds of the Botanic Garden. We’re delighted to be supporting it for a third year running,” Meridian general manager for retail, Neal Barclay said. Meridian Gardens Magic continues until Sunday, January 29. Concerts take place from 8pm until 9.30pm. Light display takes place from 9pm until 10.30pm. Full programme can be found on the Wellington City Council website www.wellington.govt.nz.

Carlo Patea and Tasi Fiso from Youth Inspire debuting the Action Replay gear last year. By Emma McAuliffe
Locals are being encouraged to get outside and play thanks to a new initiative at the library. The Wainuiomata Community Library is running Active Hour every Wednesday in January. The hour focuses on getting children active by using the action replay gear at the library, which includes different sports gear. The new venture was organised by children and teen’s librarian Alexia Herrera and library assistant Carlo Patea.
Carlo said although the weather had prevented the library from having a full Active Hour session yet the pair was hoping nicer weather would appear for the final sessions. “It’s just to get children out and about and outside instead of hanging around inside. It’s good to get people healthy and outside,” he said. Active Hour runs outside the Wainuiomata Community Library every Wednesday in January from 4pm until 5pm, weather permitting. Meet at the car park entrance of the library.
Judges announced for Fashion in the Field Local fashionistas have two days left to register for Wellington Cup Day’s Rydges Wellington Fashion in the Field. Wellington Cup Day takes place on Saturday, January 21. The judges of this year’s Fashion in the Field event will be Hannah Laity, Hanna Tevita, Luke Bettesworth and Hayley Holt. They will be responsible for awarding massive prizes across five categories; Classic Lady, Contemporary Lady, Best
Dressed Man, Maiden and Supreme Winner. Fashion in the Field entry is free for Wellington Cup Day attendees. If locals have a passion for fashion, a love of racing, a beautiful outfit that you want to proudly display or are a sewing wizard, then let Fashion in the Field be the catwalk to show off your style. Online registration closes at 5 pm Friday, January 20 at www.wellingtonracing. co.nz.
