The much anticipated Karori Event Centre is finally underway after the official turning of the sod ceremony took place last week. Planners, funders, politicians and local residents were invited to the turning of the
sod ceremony, on site next to the Karori Community Centre, last Tuesday. The ceremony commenced with a speech from Karori Community Hall trustee Matthew Beattie who thanked everyone who had contributed to getting the project underway. Continued on page 2.

The Churton Park Craft Market is set to run for the fourth year in a row at the local community centre and locals are encouraged to go along and enjoy the fun. A few years ago local resident Rowena Chin thought it would be a good idea to hold a market at the Churton Park Community Centre and it has been a popular event ever since. “It’s a community event, everyone gets involved,” Rowena said. Attendees can check out a wide range of stalls featuring home-made products including jewellery, soap, knitted toys, giant bubbles, candles
and sand art. Market goers can also enjoy delicious food and get traditional henna tattoos done while they are entertained with choir, dance and kapa haka performances from local schools. Rowena described the event as a ‘boutique market’ and said it was great to be able to support local schools that fundraise during the event. “You can do your Christmas shopping, be entertained, eat food and support local schools all at the same time.” There will also be raffle tickets available with all proceeds going to local charity Little Sprouts. “It’s a great outing for parents

After the ceremony Mr Simmers said the original plan was to move the old hall to the new site and have it strengthened and made sound proof. “The council didn’t have the money in their budget for a hall in Karori for the next 20 years,” Mr Simmers explained. He decided to take the matter into his own hands when he set up the Karori Community Hall Trust. “It was very much a dream and a vision,” Mr Simmers said about the project. He said there had been many hurdles to overcome throughout the years, trying to get the project underway, and many people doubted whether it

would come to fruition. “A lot of people said ‘you’ll never make it’ – this will change attitudes.” After many years of advocating for the Karori Event Centre, Mr Foster was delighted the project was officially underway. “It had been a long hard road to get here… it’s taken the dedication of a lot of people, particularly [Wallace].” Project manager for Shand Shelton Phil Conroy said the event centre was going to be “great for the community”. He said though there was still nearly $1 million in funding to be raised to finish the project, he was confident the money would come through after people could see some real progress. “People will now be able to fund specific aspects of the project. The funding should come through in bite-sized chunks.”

Newlands College student has the country spellbound By Sharnahea Wilson
A Newlands College student has the local community buzzing after taking out a national Spelling Bee recently. Spellbound, hosted by Toni Street, was a Spelling Bee broadcast on TV ONE where 36 competitors from across the country battled it out in Auckland at the end of August to be crowned New Zealand’s top speller. Newlands’ own Finn Lewis wiped out the competition and gained not only a trophy and bragging rights, but also $5000 towards his future studies and $1500 spending money. “At first I was a bit incredulous, I couldn’t believe I won. Then I was just really, really happy,” Finn said. The talented 14-year-old has had an advanced vocabulary from an early age. “When I was bored I would start to read the dictionary.” The biggest challenge for Finn was not memorising the 200-word list he was given, but overcoming his stutter while spelling on a nationally televised show. Finn developed a stutter when he was at intermediate school, which stopped for a
while before it came back much worse about six months ago. “I started to see a speech therapist because I could barely speak a full sentence without stuttering,” Finn explained. He said he now has a technique to reduce his stutter which he had to remember to use when he was competing in Spellbound. Although Finn did not stutter when he was spelling because he was “using his vocal chords differently”, he had to remember his technique when he was asking for the definitions of words. “I’m quite proud of myself for remembering to use it, it helped a lot.” Finn said something his speech therapist said to him inspired him. “He said ‘I don’t care if you stutter, I care if your stutter effects what you want to do’.” “It’s important to remember it doesn’t define you. I’m still the same person,” Finn said. As he would be too old to compete next year, Finn hoped he could share his wisdom and experience as a coach for the next lot of Newlands College’s budding young spellers.

Newlands gala to raise funds for MRI Machine By Sharnahea Wilson
A local shop owner is putting together a gala in Newlands to raise money for a much needed new MRI Machine for Wellington Hospital. Sharon Gill of Wellington Spices based in Newlands Mall decided to organise a gala, to raise funds for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, for November 12. “My husband had a heart
attack and a stroke and had to wait for hours on end before he could have an MRI scan,” Sharon explained. She said because Wellington Hospital has just one of the machines, some people have to wait for days before they are able to get an MRI scan. When Sharon heard it advertised on the radio that the hospital wanted help to raise money for a new machine, she jumped at the chance.
“I hope the community gets behind it – it’s for a really good cause,” she said. The hospital will provide a banner and collection buckets, and all donations will go directly to the Wellington Hospital, Sharon said. There will also be market stalls, Indian and Malaysian food, and entertainment. Sharon said the local shops, including the New World Supermarket and the Hospice
shop have been supportive and will be participating in the gala. The gala will run from 10.30am until 2.30pm on Saturday, November 12 and Sharon urged locals to go down, support their community and have a great time. In 2014 an engineering assessment classified the structure as an “earthquake prone building” and it has been closed for the past two years. At a special ceremony held last Friday, attended by His Excellency Mr Toshihisa Takata, Ambassador of Japan, the school community marked the reopening of their beloved hall. Attendees also included representatives from the Wellington City Council, other donors, fundraisers, the local community, and special guest Lois Hope whose late husband designed the hall. Principal Toby Stokes said it was quite an emotional moment when the kapa haka students lead the powhiri into the hall – officially marking its reopening. “About one third of our students hadn’t been inside the hall before. “It is going to be so amazing to have this back in our school curriculum again.”
Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Robyn McInnes said the teachers and students had to brave the weather in the courtyard while the hall was closed for construction. She said there had been a lot of hard work done in order to be able to reopen the hall. “It’s thanks to a lot of people that we’re in this position.” She thanked all of the companies and organisations that put money towards the hall as well as key individuals who donated not only their money but their time towards making sure this over $450,000 project was completed. Parent volunteers whose commitment made the reopening possible included Bridget Affleck, Emma Peckham, Robyn McInnes, Jude Hogan, Andrew Hemsley, Amelia Minty and Peter Affleck. Before the official reopening Toby, Robyn and Mr Takata planted a blossom tree beside the hall to mark the friendship between the Crofton Downs and Japanese communities.

Fashion show raises funds for Life Flight Trust
Very Welly Christmas Wellington City Council and David Jones have partnered for a “Very Welly Christmas” celebration – a two-day, fun-filled festival on Lambton Quay from December 10 to 11. The precinct will be magically transformed to host the largest festival yet in preparation to welcome Santa to his newest residence at David Jones. Between 12 noon and 8pm on Saturday, December 10, and 12 noon and 6pm on Sunday December 11, Lambton Square to the Old Bank Arcade will close to traffic and people will be able to promenade the length and breadth of one of Wellington’s iconic shopping districts.

One local business owner put on a fashion show with a difference, where all funds raised went directly to the Life Flight Trust. Save a Life Fashion Show, organised by Ann Davis-Maroulis of Salon Villair along with the Khandallah Business Association, was held at the Khandallah Town Hall at the weekend. Ann said the event was a great success with two 150-seat shows sold out. “I had two inspirations to run this show,” Ann explained. She said the first was the fact
that her husband was a motorcyclist and if there are any crashes out on the country roads, the helicopters are usually the first on the scene. The second reason was she had been teaching the girls at her salon that part of being in business was having the opportunity to help other people. “Life Flight totally relies on funding from the community. It’s just an amazing charity.” The show included Ann’s mother-in-law’s clothing ‘Maroulis Gowns’, Millicenp Designs, Desiree Designs and the well-known designs of Andrea Moore.
Ann was delighted she could also get Story star Heather Du Plessis-Allan along as compere for the show as well as OnslowWestern ward councillor Simon Woolf and Life Flight’s Perri Rosenstock as guest speakers. Ann’s aim was to raise $10,000 from the fashion show. She believes she may have even exceeded that number. Ann had both new and experienced models on the night and she said they worked well with the designers. “The mix was fantastic; everyone helped and supported each other. I’m very proud of them.”

Being a regular customer at the Crofton Downs Mitre 10 store paid off for one local woman who is now the proud owner of a limited edition Toyota Fortuner. Julia Bosma of Karori was drawn as the winner in the Mitre 10 Win a Fortuner sales promotion which ran nationwide over the last couple of months. “The man who called me asked if I was in the draw to win anything from Mitre 10, and I said ‘yes’. Then he asked me what I thought I might have won and I said ‘a voucher’.” Little did Julie know that she was the winner of a brand new $73,000 Ute. “My family thought it was absolutely amazing,” Julie said. Crofton Downs Mitre 10 managing director Brendan Hall was delighted the prize winner was one of the store’s regular customers. “We got a call from the head office to say
a customer from our store had won – this is the first time someone has won a car from a Mitre 10, usually they’re won from the Mitre 10 MEGAs,” Brendan said. “It was great to hear it would be given to one of our regulars.” The promotion was run in conjunction with Rutherford and Bond Toyota and any customers who shopped at Mitre 10 nationwide from August 18 to September 30 were eligible to go into the draw to win. A high-altitude balloon was launched into near space with the help of college students last week thanks to the Unlocking Space and Weather programme. Space Place and MetService sent a highaltitude balloon into near space, with the help of 22 secondary school students from across the Wellington Region. Educator at Space Place, Kelburn, Julia Delogu said the students were taught about the payload at Space Place last Thursday. After some slight hiccups the students, educators and MetService representatives travelled to Paraparaumu on Friday where they launched the balloon. “The students had to deal with the plans changing at the last minute... there were quite a few challenges,” Julia said. She said the Unlocking Space and Weather programme would give students a hands-on experience with science and technology. High Altitude Balloons have many possible uses in the future technology landscape of New Zealand, Julia said.
The group sent up a Spot Trace GPS, an APRS ham radio signal to collect data via the Arduino with a Habduino hat and a camera. “We were successful with the GPS and getting images,” Julia said. She was still waiting for readings to see if the other aspects of the project were also successful. Julia said sending a balloon into near space was a unique experience for these students. “It’s definitely not something you would usually do in a classroom.” She said the students worked together to overcome the challenges they faced during the programme and she was proud of what they managed to achieve. The Unlocking Space and Weather programme was made possible through the Unlocking Curious Minds contestable fund. The fund is an initiative launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which encourages all young New Zealanders, 18 years and under, to get engaged with science and technology.

A local Year 12 student has been selected as one of 40 students who will seek solutions on climate change at this year’s Powering Potential event next month. Thanks to her hard work and love of science, Neakiry Kivi from Marsden School in Karori will be tasked to find recommendations for some of the country’s future problems around climate change, at the Wellington event from December 12-15. Organised by the Royal Society of New Zealand and supported by Freemasons New Zealand, Powering Potential will bring together many of New Zealand’s most promising science students. “I’m really happy and excited… I feel lucky I got in,” Neakiry said. She was looking forward to meeting like-minded people and said she hoped they were going to be able to “make real change”. The students will work in teams of four over three days on a question that has been submitted by a science organisation and will research, investigate and collaborate to provide recommendations. Cleland said the students would need to use their creative capabilities to find solutions. “At the end of the three days each team will present its findings at a special presentation,” he said. Neakiry is on a roll of success after also being named as a finalist for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s 75th anniversary Secondary School’s Creative Competition. “I sent in a proposal to compose a choral piece for our Altissime choir with the given theme, “Our Navy: our roots, our story, our mission” and was selected as [one of seven] national finalists,” Neakiry explained.
The piece Neakiry composed was called “He Heramana Ahau” meaning “I am a sailor” for a four-part female choir with a narrator. The talented teen recently found out she had made it into the top two for the competition, and will find out if she gained first or second place at a prize giving in Auckland on November 20. Neakiry continues to impress, having recently been selected for the 27th National Science and Technology Forum in Auckland early next year and has also been named Marsden School’s Deputy Head girl for 2017.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a f lat in Kitchener Terrace was entered through a closed, but easily opened, window. Alcohol and electronic items were targeted. A large flat screen TV, a laptop computer and wine and spirits were taken. A Johnsonville student lost his wallet which had his phone number in it. He received a phone call from the finder who said they were going to keep the
$50 cash but would return the wallet, which has not yet happened. A gold Subaru Legacy parked overnight outside a flat in Bannister Avenue had its tyres slashed. A shoplifter entered the entertainment section of a large store on Johnsonville Road and opened a Freeview box. The remote controller was taken out and put in his pocket before he left the store without paying for
it. Details of the vehicle used by the offender are with the Police. In Newlands a house in Barclay Street was entered and searched. Two guitars, two laptop computers, a PS3 and a TV monitor were taken and put in a car, belonging to the victim, which had been parked on the street. The vehicle appears to have had a flat battery and could not be moved. The burglary was
abandoned and the stolen items were recovered from the vehicle. A white Hyundai van was parked locked during the night in Edgecombe Street. The alarm was activated as the break-in occurred. An iPad was stolen. A car left insecure in the driveway of a house in Westleigh Way was entered and a bag left on the seat was emptied out. A valuable necklace, perfume and small

Wadestown School’s popular House and Garden Walk is back again this year and has brought with it 13 new properties for your viewing pleasure. The House and Garden Walk, which takes place every three years, is the biggest fundraising drive for the school, raising over $50,000 last time alone. On this exciting walk around the community ticket holders will be treated to home and garden viewings, complimentary morning and afternoon tea, art and
much more. Among the 20 participating houses on November 13, is the Wadestown ARThouse which is run by local mum Kirsty Fyfe and is the only venue on the map where a ticket is not required. The ARThouse is back for the third time and will feature 31 different artists’ work which will include paintings, etchings, photographs, sculpture, ceramics and even extreme knitting. “It’s a really important day, we always get a lot of good feedback,” Kirsty said. She said all of the proceeds
from ticket sales would go straight to the school as well as 25 per cent of the money made from ARThouse sales. “The money will go towards an outdoor play area for the children,” Kirsty explained. Co-chairperson of the Wadestown Parent Teacher Association Kirsty Bennett said it was generous of homeowners to open their homes and gardens to the public. “Some of them have no involvement with the school, they’re just doing it to support the community.” Her fellow chair-person
Katy Pearce said the House and Garden Walk was always a fantastic day out. “People can get great ideas for their own homes and gardens. It’s also about connecting with the community,” she said. Last chance to join Lions long walk home This weekend the Johnsonville Lions will join in the Lions Long Walk Home from Wellington to Waikanae to test their abilities in the event of a disaster. On Saturday, walkers will leave Wellington railway station at 8.30am to test themselves and their equipment for the 24km trek to Mana’s Ngatitoa Domain. On Sunday, November 6 they will re-assemble at the Domain and complete the second 24km leg from the Domain to Raumati Marine Gardens. Project manager Lion Andrew Laing said the walk was the second organised by Lions. The first was two years ago and both have been ‘preparation for a disaster’. “The walk will once again give commuters the chance to test their ability to trek the 48-plus kilometers home from Wellington over two days, if an earthquake takes out the rail networks and makes roads impassable to vehicles. “It will also allow them to test the contents of the grab bags people should have stashed at their workplaces to enable them to get home if walking is the only way.” Andrew said the weather forecast was good for both days but the walk would go ahead rain or shine. “Everyone is urged to carry a mobile phone in case of a particular need.” Lions clubs along the way will be providing drink stations but participants need to keep in mind that the walk is about testing their self-sufficiency. Retiree finds peace of mind
Huntleigh Retirement Apartments resident Bill McLea says he lives worry-free.
Karori retiree Bill McLea is encouraging others retirees to consider a move to the retirement village that put his worries at rest. Originally looking to downsize, it was a combination of peace of mind and the friendly atmosphere that attracted Bill to Enliven’s Huntleigh Retirement Apartments in Karori. “I was living in a three bedroom house in Churton Park and I was tired of the maintenance of it,” Bill explains. “I looked at a few places with my family and mechanically everything was right, but what made Huntleigh stand out was that when I came here the people all smiled at me – and that’s what put this place at the top of the list.” Bill has now been living in his one bedroom apartment for more than two years and says he’s been worry-free since day one. “I’ve found that ever since I’ve been here I don’t worry about anything. If you have any problems, for whatever reason, there’s immediate help,” says Bill. He says his apartment’s in-built emergency call bell offers another level of security. “I pushed it by accident once and within minutes there was someone knocking on the door to check that I was alright” says Bill. “The village coordinator knows us all well and keeps an eye on us all. That’s important, because if I don’t feel right I can
tell someone and nothing is ever a bother.” To reduce Bill’s worries even further, Huntleigh Home also arranges his meals and provides assistance with his homekeeping. “The home next door organised for a lady to come in and do the ironing and vacuuming and I have my meals delivered to my apartment or in the apartment’s dining room downstairs with the other residents - the food is very good.” He says the social aspect of life at Huntleigh Apartments is also part of what makes it so enjoyable. “We also have afternoon drinks on a Friday afternoon in the communal lounge - I have grown to know the people here very well and I enjoy it. I’m sure other people that choose to live here will enjoy it too.” Huntleigh Retirement Apartments are operated by Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central, and provides independent retirement living from 221 Karori Road in Karori, right next door to Enliven’s popular Huntleigh Home. Budding young chefs got creative at West Park School in Johnsonville last week when they celebrated Chefs Day 2016. President of Wellington Chefs Association Chetan Pangam, along with the association’s vice president and Weltec teacher Scott Campbell were on hand to show the students how to make ‘art on a plate’. As well as healthy eating, which is an underlying theme for Chef Day each year, this year people were encouraged to get creative with their food. “Everyone loves to have fun with

food,” Chetan said. “If you make cooking a bit of fun for kids, they are more inclined to get involved.” The 45 young chefs kicked off the day with healthy smoothies before delving into some apple muesli with fresh berries. They then got the chance to show their artsy side when they made delicious pancakes with berries, marshmellows, chocolate chips, hundreds and thousands, and maple syrup. At the end of the session the students were given goodie bags which included fun recipes they could try out at home.

Two local ladies have launched their own business and to celebrate, they have decided to give away a free wedding. Marriage celebrant Rachel Dudfield and Johnsonville photographer Angie Curtis have combined their skills to create All you need to say I do wedding packages. Earlier in the year Rachel and Angie put on a free wedding for a “very worthy family” as a way to give back to the community. “Rachel is a celebrant of ‘all you need is love’, who started this all up,” Angie explained. “She noticed more people wanting less fuss, less traditional ceremonies and celebrations... and so this was born.” The wedding organisers said the stress and expense of a wedding and a sit down meal can often put people off. “We want people to see that there can be something really worthwhile in thinking about your wedding as an intimate gathering in a beautiful location: less fuss, more love. “Our weddings will start from $2500, which will include the venue, celebrant, photographer, cake, high
tea, bubbles and flowers for your special wedding.” But for one lucky couple this month, all of the above will come free. Over 60 couples have entered the draw to ‘win a wedding’ which will be held at the historic Dransfield House on Willis Street on Sunday, November 27. Catering covers canapes for 20 people, including the couple, tea and coffee, and two glasses of sparkling wine for toasts per person and flowers and photography will be supplied. “This is the start of our journey, and the free wedding is part of our launch of All you need to say I do collaboration wedding packages, and also part of who we are as people,” Angie said. Local divers make a splash at national competition

Local young divers made a splash at a recent national skills competition in Dunedin, taking out an abundance of medals. Nineteen children aged eight to 13 from the Wellington Diving Club travelled to Dunedin to compete in the Diving New Zealand National Skills Testing Event 2016 over labour weekend. This was each of the diver’s first away competition and they faced the challenges of one, three and five metre-high boards. The young sportspeople had to complete five dives at each level to get an overall score of gold, silver or bronze.

Local divers swept up the competition with three of the top divers being Lucia Marull from Khandallah, Arabella Allwood from Karori and Tino Schlagowski from Ngaio. Their head coach James Hardaker was delighted with the results his divers managed to get. “Wellington divers produced some fantastic results. They were also awarded the Best Team Spirit for their enthusiasm and support to their team mates. “They’ve all worked so hard and this is a result of all the effort they’ve put in,” he said. The youngest divers of the group at age eight, Carys Tristram and Arabella managed an overall placing of second and third respectively.
Wellington divers achieved three of the four highest scored dives and had divers who came first, second and third across their events as well as divers who came first, second or third from the overall scores. Team manager Gayle Tristram said the divers did incredibly well considering it was their fist time competing. “They did so well. All of their hard work paid off.” The Wellington Diving Club in Kilbirnie runs classes for divers of all levels, from development squads to elite squads who compete at an international level. Tennis Champs This year’s Khandallah Tennis and Squash Club Tennis Champs will be held in December on Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13. A handicap consolation singles competition will be run for both girls and boys. Players knocked out in the early

The curious case of Steve Bartman The 2016 World Series of Baseball between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians is about so much more than just who wins baseball’s greatest prize. It’s about history - the Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908 and have not made the decider since 1945. Cleveland hasn’t won a World Series since 1948. However, it’s the curious case of one Cubs fan, Steve Bartman, that lingers across the whole series which got underway on Wednesday. The Bartman incident happened post-season game played between the Chicago Cubs and the Florida Marlins on October 14, 2003, at Wrigley Field in Chicago. In the eighth inning of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series with Chicago ahead 3–0 and holding a three games to two lead in the best of seven series, several spectators attempted to catch a foul ball off the bat of Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo. One of the fans – Steve Bartman – reached for the ball, deflecting it and disrupting a potential catch by Cubs outfielder Moises Alou. If Alou had caught the ball, it would have been the second out in the inning and the Cubs would have been just four outs away from going to the World Series for the first since 1945. Instead, the Cubs ended up surrendering eight runs in the inning and losing the game, 8–3 and the series after losing the deciding game seven. The incident was seen as the turning point of the series. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Bartman, a lifelong Cubs fan, had to be escorted from the stadium by security guards and placed under police protection for a time when his name and address were made public on Major League Baseball message boards. Since that day, Bartman has been black-balled in Chicago and he has spent the last 13 years in hiding. He changed jobs, has moved cities and apparently changed his name. He has vanished from sight since the incident. In 2011, ESPN produced a documentary on the incident called ‘Catching Hell’. The hope was to try to track down Bartman and interview him. While a reporter eventually met Bartman by chance in a parking lot and asked for an interview, Bartman declined. For this reason alone, I’d like to see the Cubs win so Bartman can stop living in fear. Sport is just sport and the treatment of Bartman needs to be put right.
