Local bowlers take out Wellington tournament

Fun run for children Hundreds of children from around Wellington took part in a fun run for charity last week. The Cigna Kids Waterfront Fun Run took place last Thursday at Waitangi Park with hundreds of children taking part. Start and finish lines were centred in the park with 500m fun runs for pre-schoolers, through to students in Year 8 running from one to two kilometres depending on their age. “We are really passionate about the health and wellbeing of our communities and this event is a great way to encourage kids to get out and be active,” Cigna CEO Lance Walker said. The day had a festive atmosphere with Cigna staff running a variety of stalls providing food and activities for a gold coin donation. All proceeds from the day went to Cigna’s official charity Achilles New Zealand.

Local bowlers came out on top at the weekend following a Wellington tournament. The Bowls Specialist Mixed Pairs Tournament was held in Wellington at the weekend, with over 100 people taking part. Three of the eight participants in the semi-finals of the tournament hailed from the Johnsonville Bowling Club. Two of those participants made it into the final. The finals were played on Labour Monday at the Johnsonville Bowling Club.

Brent Stubbins from the Johnsonville Bowling Club and Linda Ralph from Auckland defeated Stu McLuskie from Paraparaumu and Johnsonville Bowling Club‘s Cathy Guilford 20-7 in the final match. Brent said the final was not a straight forward win for the pair. “We trailed 7-2 early on and were down four shots on the head, thanks to four fantastic bowls by Stu. Linda stepped up to play her last bowl and played a screamer to take the shot and the end. We then

went on to score on the remaining ends to take the title,” he said. This was Linda’s second major win of the season after recently winning the Auckland Mixed Pairs. Kaaren Guildford was the final participant from Johnsonville Bowling Club who made it into the semi-finals, but she missed out on the final. She did, however, win the opportunity to represent Wellington in the National Mixed Pairs finals to be held in Dunedin next year.

Aaron Smith did the right thing to stand himself down from the All Blacks test on Saturday night against the Wallabies. Arguably one of New Zealand’s best players, he had no other option and it was a smart public relations move on his part and the All Blacks in general. He has naturally been under fire after footage was released of him in a disabled toilet with a woman who was not his partner. While, not a law breaking offence, in today’s gossip-filled news era it’s been a story that’s just kept going. You have to feel for his partner in that situation as she’s been thrown into a circus she created none of. However Smith’s choice (which was probably forced on him), was a good long term move from the Highlanders and Manawatu player. Sure, he missed a test, but the test was largely meaningless. It also allowed him to look remorseful and win back a little public good will. Short term pain, long term gain at its best. Smith’s position as the top halfback in black is not in danger, his pass and decision making have him highly rated even in this golden era of New Zealand rugby. By the end of year Northern Hemisphere tour, all of this will be forgotten by the general public. Most will see it as a punishment served, embarrassment caused and let’s move on. I’m sure that’s what the New Zealand Rugby Union will be thinking as well.
