At just 13 years old Juvenka Earthson is gearing up to cycle 1626km – the entire length of the North Island. In early November the young cyclist will embark on his six week long journey, and it’s all in a bid to raise money for his school. The year 8 student from South Wellington Intermediate School is hoping to raise money - through completing the near 2000km journey - for an upgrade of his school’s playground which is SOUTHERN & EASTERN currently closed. Juvenka’s Journey Juvenka will begin his journey at the Cape Reinga Lighthouse and will finish almost two months later in the capital. The eager young student has been cycling since he was five years old and said he loved the “independence” it gave him. As it was “much faster than walking” Juvenka said he cycled to and from school every day. He said after cycling the Queen Charlotte Sound track earlier this year, he told his mum he wanted to cycle the length of the North Island. He said his teachers, fellow students and family were supportive of his decision. “My teacher said that if I wanted to do it, I should definitely do it now because I won’t be able to do it when I get into high school.” Juvenka will embark on his journey with his mother, Fiona Hood, by his side. The pair will stick mostly to mountain bike tracks on their journey and will attempt to cycle six days a week.
Fiona said at 13 years old once completed it would be a massive accomplishment for her son. “I thought what an awesome idea and at 13 he still wants to hang out with me which is great. I think it will be really fun, but also pretty terrible, when we have to continue on and it’s raining,” Fiona said. Juvenka was now encouraging people to head to his Givealittle page and donate to help his school raise the $70,000 needed for a new playground. Fiona said Red Moose, Bicycle Junction in Newtown and Mud Cycles in Karori, had all come on board to sponsor Juvenka. However, they were still on the lookout for more sponsorship, particularly for the correct riding gear. Keep an eye out for voting papers If you love the parks and peaks and the laneways and landmarks of Wellington city, then vote to make sure they are all well taken care of. Some 141,904 voting papers have now been sent to enrolled voters in Wellington city for the upcoming local government elections. Wellington City Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp urged all Wellingtonians to vote early. “This is your chance to influence the direction of the city over the next three years. Local elections are extremely important because councils have a huge role to play in our lives.”
Warwick also urged voters to find out all they could about candidates before voting. “Candidate information is included with the voting papers. You can also find out more about candidates on the council’s website or by attending a ‘meet the candidates’ meeting in your community or by looking at their own social media pages.” Wellington City Council is one of eight local authorities that use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system for electing a mayor and councillors. Under STV, voters ranked their preferred candidates by placing a ‘1’ in the box next to
the candidate they most prefer, a ‘2’ beside the candidate they next prefer, and so on. Voters can rank as many or as few candidates as they like – they do not have to rank them all. Wellingtonians will also be asked to vote for candidates for the Capital and Coast District Health Board and Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Wellington Ward. Voters have until midday on Saturday, October 8 to return their papers. Voters need to return the completed voting papers in the Freepost return envelope provided – either by post, or to a ballot box.
“Ballot boxes will be in city libraries and at the council offices from tomorrow. Just make sure they reach my office in plenty of time before voting closes on 8 October,” said Warwick. If you’re voting by post, the last day for posting your papers is Wednesday, October 5. If you haven’t received voting papers by Thursday, September 22, you will have to cast a special vote in the elections. Marching is in her blood By Nikki Papatsoumas
A Berhampore resident has been honoured for a career in marching that spans five decades. Colleen Pobar was among those to be presented with an Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian award by the Wellington City Council for her services to marching at a ceremony last month. Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian awards are civic awards that show the council’s appreciation for people in Wellington who have made an outstanding or lengthy contribution to their community. For the last five decades, Colleen has been in charge of the Lochiel Marching Drill Team, an all women marching group based in Wellington. In her citation, the council said Colleen deserved her award as she had led Lochiel Marching to international recognition. The team has just got back from Edinburgh where they performed at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - the seventh time they have been invited to take part in the internationally renowned event. Marching runs in Colleen’s blood. Colleen said she first began marching at the age of 12 and by the time she was 16 she was coaching the sport to young women across the capital. She eventually took over the coaching of Lochiel in 1966. Marching runs in the stalwart’s family, Colleen’s father was a coach, her mother was a chaperon and her sisters

Learning healthy cooking on a budget Residents of Wellington’s eastern suburbs have an opportunity to learn how to cook healthy food, on a budget. Next month, the Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay Community Centre will run two ‘Healthy Cooking on a Budget’ workshops. The community centre’s coordinator, Rowena Bonne, said the centre last ran the workshops two years ago, and they were popular and fun for the participants, who enjoyed eating
what they had just cooked at the end of each session. Rowena said the workshops were being run by Andrew Sadler, a local chef with more than 30 years’ experience in the hospitality industry. She said he was experienced in teaching novice cooks as he used to run courses at Wellington High School’s Community Education Centre. “He is passionate about food and cooking and is looking for-
ward to showing people how to cook some nutritious, delicious meals that will use food which is in season and is simple to use.” Rowena said the classes were aimed at those who were not experienced or confident at cooking nutritious healthy meals with just a few ingredients. She said the centre wanted to aim the classes towards those on a low income, who perhaps would not usually be able to afford cooking training.

Hundreds of children are learning how to be safe in the open water this week. For the second time this year, the Learn to Swim programme at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre is running its Water Safety Week. Water Safety Week was introduced to the 1800 odd students as part of the programme earlier this year. This week children built on skills they learnt in term one and were introduced to a number of other activities

While children had already been taught how to react when coming into open water, this week instructors were focusing on teaching students about the importance of wearing life jackets and having parental supervision, especially outside of a pool environment. Over the week children took part in a number “real life mini situations”, designed to simulate what it would be like
if they came into trouble in the water, Selina said. T h is i nclude d su r viva l stroke, u-turns, how to react safely in a rip, swimming through seaweed, how to wear a life jacket and how to safely exit a life raft following an emergency. “We are just re-enforcing that if you are out kayaking or boating, whatever it may be, everyone has to be wearing a fitted life jacket and if you don’t have one, you aren’t doing it,” Selina said. “That’s the message we want these kids to go away with
and hopefully we can start changing the Kiwi ‘she’ll be right’ attitude.” She also said it was important parents understood they must supervise their children around water at all times, particularly outside of the pool environment. She said feedback on the programme had been extremely positive since its inception earlier this year. “After the last one we had lots of feedback about how much the kids were talking about it and how much knowledge they gained from it.”
Help for those with sight loss

People with sight loss will now be able to comfortably navigate Wellington city and its businesses. Wellington City Council has collaborated with the Blind Foundation to introduce BlindSquare, a product aimed at customers and visitors who are blind, have low vision or a print disability. Using the BlindSquare Event iPhone navigation app, the service gives customers the opportunity to explore the city
with independence. The app works in conjunction with Kontakt.io Beacons. Pre-programmed messages are spoken from BlindSquare when the devices are in proximity of each other. This includes details about the building, facilities, products, and nearby streets. Wellington City Councillor David Lee initially pitched the idea to council’s community services team, and helped get the ball rolling.

Business savvy Evans Bay Intermediate School students sold their wares at a quarterly market day last week. Last Wednesday was the second time the intermediate school ran the market day, in an attempt to give students an opportunity to learn more about financial capability. Assistant Principal Ed Trotter said students organised themselves into small groups and then selected a product or service to sell to fellow students and family members.

Spring forward for Daylight Saving
Ed said each group paid $5 to hire a stall, and all money collected for stall hire went back into fundraising targets for the school. At the end of each market day, students were allowed to keep any money they made. At last week’s market day a number of items were up for sale, including slime, lip balm, baking, food, candles and carnival style games. This weekend locals are reminded to turn their clocks forward an hour for Daylight Saving. Daylight Saving commences this this Sunday, September 25 when 2am becomes 3am. Remember to put clocks forward an hour before going to bed. The New Zealand Fire Service also recommends residents check they have working smoke alarms at the same time they put their clocks forward. According to the Department of Internal Affairs, entomologist and astronomer George Hudson was the earliest known advocate of Daylight Saving in New Zealand. Hudson approached the Philosophical Society in 1895, and presented a paper which explained the merits of seasonal time adjustment, however, his idea was scoffed by society members. In 1909 the idea was once again flagged by parliamentarian Sir Thomas Sidey, who said putting clocks forward by one hour during summer would account for an additional hour of daylight in the evenings. After several years arguing his case, Sidey was successful in 1927 and the Summer Time Act was passed, which saw clocks put forward one hour between November 6, 1927 and March 4, 1928. The act was passed for just one year, and following this it ran for half an hour each year. In 1988, after feedback from the public, the Minister of Internal Affairs arranged for a trial period of extended daylight saving to be held from the second Sunday in October to the third Sunday in March. In 1990 after much success a new Daylight Time Order was made, declaring daylight time would from the first Sunday in October each year until the third Sunday in March of the following year. Artists utilise ancient tradition for new exhibition

Tapu te Ranga Gallery’s newest exhibition sees two talented artists utilise an ancient tradition which connects them to the past. Artists Anne Johnstone and Jenny Hartley opened their Eclectopia exhibition at the Island Bay gallery last week. Both women have forged unique bodies of work for the exhibition, with a common interest in how the lost wax process can combine intricate and even delicate patterns with great strength. The lost wax process is a method of metal casting in which a molten metal is poured into a mold that has been created by means of a wax model. Once the mold is made, the wax model is melted and drained away. Despite using the same technique to create their bronze masterpieces, both women
find their inspiration from different places. While Anne has a passion for repeating and sometimes abstract design patterns, Jenny has a fascination with bones and skeletons. Both women said they were excited to exhibit their pieces together. While Jenny was a resident artist at the gallery, this was the first time Anne had exhibited any of her bronze pieces. “We have really been able to support each other through the process,” Jenny said. “A lot of the pieces we have seen go from wax to bronze, we have seen the whole process.” Alongside the bronzes will be exhibited drawings and art work that have been made as part of their artistic processes. At the weekend, around 80 members of the community braved the wet weather and showed up for the first of a number of workshops aimed at designing the future of Island Bay. Over the coming months a series of workshops will be held in Island Bay, aimed at developing a plan for the seaside suburb. President of the Island Bay Residents’ Association, Vicki Greco, said the first workshop, which took place on Sunday, was successful. “I think it went really well, the feedback has been really positive from people. People felt engaged and they felt listened to. It was a way to get people with opposing views talking.” Southern ward councillor and Island Bay resident Paul Eagle attended Sunday’s meeting. He said it was a positive opportunity for residents to have their say on what they want for Island Bay as opposed to having the council impose ideas on them. “There was a real sense that people were keen to put aside their differences and move forward,” he said. Both Vicki and Paul strongly encouraged anyone who wanted a say in the future of Island Bay to attend the workshops scheduled for the coming weeks. “If you love the bay, you will come and have your say,” Vicki said.

Upcoming meeting of the Island Bay Residents’ Association On Monday, the Island Bay Residents’ Association will hold its next meeting at the Island Bay Bowling Club. President of the Island Bay Residents’ Association, Vicki Greco, said there were several things on the agenda for the upcoming meeting. She said with local government elections taking place, an expert would speak to members about how STV voting worked and cut-off dates for sending voting forms off would also be discussed. As well as this, a group of residents were now working with Ian Cassels from the Wellington Company in regards to increased traffic volumes as a result of the development at Erskine College, she said. Vicki said the group was formed after concerns were flagged at last month’s meeting and she said the group would now work with Ian to come up with a resolution to traffic problems.
The Island Bay Residents’ Association meeting will take place on Monday, September 26 from 7pm at the Island Bay Bowling Club, 276 The Parade.

At next week’s meeting of the Island Bay Residents’ Association, an interim safety solution for Wakefield Park and Adelaide Rd will also be discussed. This comes after a young boy was hit by a car while crossing Adelaide Rd, following football practice at Wakefield Park. As an interim solution, the Wellington City Council was proposing to install a driver feedback sign on Adelaide Rd, near Wakefield Park, as well as short lengths
of no stopping restrictions, to assist with driver and pedestrian visibility. They were also proposing to extend the kerb line at the northern crossing point to provide a safer crossing point to an existing central pedestrian refuge island.

A Wellington walkway has been named in celebration of Wellington’s long standing ties with Europe. Members of Wellington’s diplomatic community came together last Monday to open the walkway newly-named ‘Europe Lane’. Mayor of Wellington Celia WadeBrown and deputy chief of mission of the delegation of the European Union to New Zealand, Eva Tvarozkova formally opened the walkway. Other representatives of the European Diplomatic Community, including those from France, Poland, Germany, Hungary and the Netherlands, were also present. Also at the opening were Friends of Bolton Street Cemetery and Living Streets Aotearoa, who were among those consulted with as part of the naming process. Wellington has a long-standing connection with Europe dating back to the 19th Century settlers and has a special relationship with the diplomatic corps. “European immigration has greatly enriched Wellington with music, art, literature, architecture, food and wine all making their mark on the city,” Ms
Wade-Brown said. “Europe Lane also recognises our political ties with the European Union and our co-operation on issues such as the climate change, science, education, and promoting development and human rights in the Pacific.” The previously unnamed lane runs adjacent to Bolton Street Cemetery from Bowen St to Aurora Tce on the east side of the motorway, just behind the Delegation of the European Union to New Zealand. “As many of the best cities in Europe are walkable cities – it is appropriate that we are marking our relationship with Europe with a walkway in the heart of the Capital City and the seat of government,” Ms Wade-Brown said. Ms Tvarozkova said Europe Lane was a clear symbol of the long-standing historical ties and shared values between Europe and New Zealand, and its people. “This grand gesture of the city of Wellington to name a lane in New Zealand’s capital after Europe is yet another example of our ever closer partnership,” she said.

South coast gets a spring clean

More than 160 locals braved the icy cold weather at the weekend to give Wellington’s south coast an annual spring clean. On Saturday the South Coast Clean-Up took place, an annual event now in its seventh year. Every year a number of community groups, alongside eager locals, help with the clean-up, which stretches 12km along Wellington’s south coast. Groups involved in the clean-up this year included Niwa, Houghton Valley School, Lyall Bay Coast Care and Forest and Bird.
Organiser Helen Kettle said each group was in charge of hosting one of 12 different sites along the south coast. She said despite the drizzly weather, she was thrilled with Saturday’s turn out. “We had to make a call with the weather and we were watching the rain radar like hawks and we decided there was a window to go ahead. “The amount of people who showed up shows the strength of community and it’s an event where people know what to expect and they want to be involved.” Helen said this year 50 bags of
rubbish were collected – about half as much rubbish as usual. She said as always, a variety of rubbish was collected, including an office chair, car tyres, clothing, and even a bank card and a $5 note. Helen said it was important to ensure the south coast had an annual spring clean. “We all love the south coast and it’s everyone’s’ responsibility to do their bit to keep it clean and keep the rubbish out of the ocean. Wellington Accident and Urgent Medical Centre has been providing care to the community for quarter of a decade. Last Tuesday evening, more than 60 people gathered to celebrate the Mt Cook centre’s 25th anniversary with cake, speeches and a glass of bubbles. The centre opened its doors in July 1991, but celebrations were combined with its AGM, which takes place each year in September. General manager Margaret Curnow said the centre was governed by a Board of Directors elected from 86 general practitioner shareholders. Margaret said the centre was originally opened as a way for GPs to provide after-hours care for their patients. “Back in the day GPs were on call. Every practice
would have someone on call every night and the idea was this was a way GPs could provide after hours care which was more manageable.” Twenty-five years since opening its doors, the centre now employs close to 50 staff members. As well as this around 150 GPs from across Wellington are rostered on to work at the centre and another 30 or so locums provide additional cover. Together, staff helped treat more than 35,000 patients each year. “Our main aim is to provide care for people that cannot access their GP, whether it’s after hours, they can’t get an appointment, or they are from out of town.” Looking forward, Margaret said the centre would continue to provide its seamless service, in the most efficient way possible. “I feel enormously proud to be part of celebrations
even though I have only been here for two-and-ahalf years. “I arrived here to a centre that was just working superbly with amazing staff. One person has been working here since day one.” Board chair Dr Sarah Sawrey said when the centre opened a quarter of a century ago, it was “revolutionary”. “There had been nothing like it in Wellington before and it certainly wasn’t common,” she said. “It has certainly been a good thing for Wellington as well because we have got the integrated service with the pharmacy and Pacific Radiology on site. “The centre has changed and evolved over the years in response to what’s going on around us. We have continued to evolve and I think that will continue to happen as more services are brought from primary care to after hours.”

The 2016 Wellington mayoral candidates got another chance to get all snippy with each other last Thursday. Barbarian Productions, a long-established Wellington theatre group, played host to a meet the candidates event at Vogelmorn Bowling Club, with a difference: each candidate was placed in the salon chair, given a ‘haircut’ by barber Jason Muir and talked politics as it related to them personally. They were then seated before the packed hall and asked more general, policy-based questions led by host for the night and dramaturgical director of Barbarian Productions, Thomas LaHood. The theatre troupe stages traditional stage shows but also works outside of the theatre to engage with their community. “Art-making is the most efficient way we have found to ask complex questions,” Thomas said. The fun atmosphere of the evening was designed to engage with a community that may have lost interest in local body elections, especially the young. In the last local body elections in Wellington less than one third of people under the age of 24 voted, he said. Labour candidate Justin Lester has been campaigning for the youth vote by working closely with university student unions, he said. “We engage with young people by listening to them and their concerns… For many young people, a rental warrant of fitness and public transport are of top priority, and that’s why I have placed them high on

The initiative is part of the Love NZ scheme, which has seen recycling bins set up at participating supermarkets and stores across Auckland, Waikato and Canterbury. Since the scheme was launched in Auckland 10 months ago, more than 58.5 tonnes of bags and wrappers have been recycled, project manager Lyn Mayes said. She said the numbers demonstrated the success of the project.
“Two hundred stores in Auckland, Waikato and Canterbury are now offering the service and over 14.5 million bags have been dropped off by customers,” she said. Lyn said only a small amount of what was placed in the soft plastic bins could not be recycled. “At 5 per cent this contamination rate is much lower than experienced in other public place recycling bins, showing that shoppers are making a real effort and the message if it is soft plastic and can be scrunched up in a ball it can be recycled is clearly working.” The Packaging Forum is driving the programme, which is funded in part by brand owners as well as some investment from the government. The Love NZ Scheme will be rolled out in Wellington on October 19 and recycling bins will be located at New World, Pak’n Save, Countdown and Warehouse stores across the capital.

School students ‘Dahl their Doors’ By Nikki Papatsoumas
Students from a local school dove into a world of imagination and celebrated of one of the world’s most beloved childrens’ authors last week. September 13 marked 100 years since the birth of childrens’ author Roald Dahl and St Mark’s Church School students took it as an opportunity to celebrate. As part of celebrations, each classroom took part in the ‘Dahl your Door’ competition. This involved each classroom selecting a Roald Dahl book and then decorating their classroom door with the story in mind. At the end of the week, two classrooms, one from the junior school and one from the senior school, were selected as winners of the competition. Junior classroom 2AO won for their BFG themed door and senior classroom 8CU won for their George’s Marvellous Medicine themed door. The week-long celebrations were planned by the school’s librarian, Paula na Nagara.
“Before the competition some of the teachers were sharing his stories with children or even poetry with the pre-school children, getting them familiar with the characters,” she said. “Teachers said to me that the children really enjoyed working together on a Dahl story because all the children were familiar with his work so it’s something they can work together on as a classroom.” Paula said the school’s art teacher Markelle Archer had the difficult job of selecting the winning doors. “I was blown away. It was more than I expected, the effort was huge.” As well as the ‘Dahl your Door’ competition, students also hunted for golden tickets hidden around the school’s library, and guessed which illustrations matched which of the author’s books. The school’s drama teacher even got into the spirit, visiting classrooms dressed as Willy Wonka, handing out chocolate to students. Paula said Dahl’s humour had stood the test of time, making his books as popular today as they were a
It’s local council election time of course, and many of you will have attended well-run election meetings organised by residents’ associations. Many more of you won’t, with some people intending not to vote and a few merely proposing to pick names they’ve seen on billboards. But voting carefully is essential. There are huge challenges to be faced by the city and the region. We have mounting debt, and while the Wellington economy has grown fast (thanks to Sir Peter Jackson and other luminaries) it’s still small and fragile. We need to carefully control our council spending and ensure that every dollar counts. There will be a new Mayor and at least six new councillors looking to contribute to running a better council while also looking to make their individual marks. As a council candidate I guess I’m no different in that regard, except that I’m a bit too old to have ego and wider political aspirations! I have no vanity projects to push. Transport will be top of the agenda this triennium. We need to unblock the congestion around the Basin Reserve as soon as possible and secure a second Mt Victoria traffic with really good walking and cycling facilities. We can achieve this with the government funds that have gone begging since people realised that a great big long flyover wasn’t the best solution to fixing the Basin’s woes. Let’s turn to the Regional Council. How many regional councillors do you know? Have you heard them speak? They have a huge influence on our city’s liveability, economy and rates, especially in the transport area, as GWRC is responsible for all public transport in the region. We’ll have a new set of regional councillors, many keen to see light rail introduced. I’m keen too, but only as far as participating in a detailed, objective and factsbased investigation into this possible future mode of transport. We can’t just have modern trams for their own sake – they’ll have to offer a transport solution that’s fit for purpose, affordable and better than we have now in every regard. Light rail has the po-

Meanwhile, many bus users are concerned about the new bus network to come into effect in 2018. I share many of these concerns, and I know something about the current network as I developed it back in 1991 when I ran the Region’s public transport team. The new network builds on this insofar as some areas will get better bus frequencies and weekend services than we could afford back then. However, other areas will see their services cut, or passengers will need to transfer at places like Kilbirnie or Miramar Avenue to reach the city centre. Residents of northern Miramar will need to transfer once at Miramar Avenue then again at Kilbirnie if they wish to reach the hospital – a major design fault. I don’t believe the City Council has worked closely enough with the Regional Council to monitor and influence this new network plan, and I intend to change that, starting in October. I want to ensure the new regional councillors don’t become so fascinated with light rail that they fail to properly oversee the region’s current public transport network, which consumes half of GWRC’s funds. Rare suffragette medal on display A rare bravery medal awarded to New Zealander Frances Parker in 1912 is now on display at Te Papa. The Women’s Social and Political Union Medal for Valour was awarded to the suffrage activist for her courageous role in the campaign for the right of women to vote in Scotland. The medal was purchased by Te Papa earlier this year and the
display coincided with Women’s Suffrage Day, which took place last Monday, which was the 123rd anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in New Zealand. Te Papa’s Head of New Zealand and Pacific Cultures, Dr Bronwyn Labrum, said the bravery medal had an incredibly important story to tell. “We are proud to put it on dis-
play to mark Women’s Suffrage Day,” she said. “It’s a powerful memento of the ongoing struggle of women around the world for civil rights, and is especially significant for New Zealand as a tangible link to our leading role in that struggle.” The Women’s Social and Political Union Medal for Valour will remain on display at Te Papa for three months.

Frances Mary Parker was a New Zealander living in Britain who became a prominent suffrage activist. Born in Otago in December 1874, she left New Zealand in 1896 when she was 22 - three years after New Zealand granted its women the right to vote - to study at Cambridge. By 1908 she had become involved in the British women’s suffrage movement, and eventually became a prominent leader of the Women’s Social and Political Union in Scotland where she was involved

The sun shone last Thursday for South Wellington Intermediate School’s market day. The community was supportive and came out in droves, lured by the temptations of more than 50 stalls selling food, crafts, and games of skill. All stalls were conceived, organised, and run by student teams. They worked together creating and marketing products, working out pricing and profit margins, and selling on the day, all with
the support of local businesses and families. The children relished the responsibility and the chance to engage with the wider community, and the market remained in full swing right up until closing time. Many parents commented on the professionalism of the stallholders. Profits from the day will be put toward replacing the school’s ageing playground. However, first and foremost the market was about learning, community, and fun.

Ex-Silver Fern to take on coaching role at high school A local high school will welcome a world class athlete to its coaching team next year. Retired Silver Fern Irene van Dyk has volunteered her time to coach netball at Wellington High School in 2017. Van Dyk, with the assistance of former international netballer Sandra Edge, kicked off the partnership with the school by holding a fun night for Wellington High School students and their families at the ASB Stadium last Tuesday. Van Dyk said she was looking forward to working with Wellington High School. “I want to coach at Wellington High School because I think there is a lot of talent there and I would like to be part of the new era of netballers coming through. “We want to make netball at Wellington High a safe and happy environment where netballers can reach their full potential, whether it is competitive or social,” she said. Deputy Principal at Wellington High School, Dominic Killalea, said the School was excited to be working with the athlete. “Wellington High School is honoured and proud to have Irene van Dyk associated with our netball in 2017,” he said. “The warmth, expertise, skill and fun she embodies will be invaluable to the enjoyment and engagement of girls at our school now and into the future.”
Local woman takes top spot at lifesaving world champs A local woman has been named the best surf lifesaver in New Zealand at a world championship competition. Lyall Bay’s Samantha Lee secured her title of having the single best performance of any New Zealand surf lifesaving athlete at a world championship event with five gold medals in the pool. Lee was one of the New Zealand surf lifesavers who together claimed 26 world championship medals at the Interclub competition of the 2016 Lifesaving World Championships, which concluded last Monday in The Netherlands. Lee took out the open women’s 200m obstacle swim, 100m rescue medley, and 100m manikin carry with fins. With her BMD Northcliffe team mates she took out the obstacle relay and also the line throw with Danielle McKenzie. Lee added silver in the 50m manikin carry and super lifesaver and bronze in the 4x25m manikin relay. Lee now has eight world titles at a national team level and five at interclub level surpassing lifesaving legends Cory Hutchings, Morgan Foster, Calum Taylor and Anna Ballara. Surf Life Saving New Zealand Sport Manager Mike Lord said this was an outstanding achievement for Lee, her clubs and the wider surf lifesaving community. “Sam is an amazing athlete and these performances, on top of taking out the national team’s title with her fellow Black Fins last week, is quite astonishing,” he said. Mike said all of the athletes could be incredibly proud of their achievements and what they achieved on the world stage.
