The Treaty of Waitangi Waitangi Day, which falls on February 6, commemorates the day the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. The Treaty of Waitangi, which is considered New Zealand’s founding document, was signed in a marquee at Treaty House, in Waitangi in the Bay of Islands in 1840. The treaty, which was separated into three parts, made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Maori rights to their land and gave Maori the rights of British subjects.
