Cycle, skate or scoot next weekend By Nikki Papatsoumas

Thousands of people are expected to cycle, skate, scoot and explore Wellington’s coast next weekend. On Valentine’s Day, roads will be closed to motorists from Shelly Bay to Scorching Bay, along the Miramar Peninsula. as part of the annual Ciclovia event. Ciclovia is a worldwide movement, which sees roads and footpaths closed down so people can experience the city they live in, in a different way. Ciclovia organiser Ron Beernink said seeing all sorts of people having fun together, or on their own, was what made all the hard work worth it. “People don’t realise what is involved in making something like Ciclovia a success. Luckily we have a committee of enthusiastic volunteers.” Local woman Miranda Struthers said she took part in the event two years ago with her daughter, son and husband. She said it was a great way for children to become more confident on their bikes. “Last year was the first time my son had done it by himself it is a great environment with no traffic to contend with. “They feel independent that they are partaking on their own, it’s really great for their confidence.” Miranda said because the roads

remained closed throughout the day it was a “pleasant environment to cycle in”. “It’s great just being able to enjoy the coastal ride, it’s pretty magical. We’re pretty lucky in a capital to have access to the outdoors like that.” Ciclovia is sponsored by the Wellington City Council through its Communities on Bikes fund. This covers costs like traffic
