do swimming classes with their children. It is a great activity and fantastic for bonding.” Child safety advisor at Plunket, Sue Campbell, said it was good news that parents were taking the opportunity to visit pools with their young families and

engage in safe water play. “Getting into the water with your baby is a learning experience for both of you – your baby is learning about the water, and you’re learning how you can be safe together in the water,” she said.

Sue said water confidence lessons were a great way to consolidate learning about how to be safe in water for both children and their parents.  For more information on water confidence classes, head to • Superior energy efficiency • Tough and durable • Low maintenance • New Build, Retro Fits • Free measure and quote • Full installation service

Fire strikes at seaside cafe Oriental Bay came to a standstill on Monday following a fire at a popular local cafe. Emergency services were called to the scene of the fire at Beach Babylon cafe shortly after 9am. The New Zealand Fire Service later reported that the fire had started in the kitchen, spreading up the walls and ceilings of the building. After several hours, fire crews managed to extinguish the fire

and dampen hot spots. At one stage there were at least 10 fire trucks at the scene and staff members and customers were quickly evacuated from the eatery. On the Beach Babylon Facebook page, staff described the fire as a “wee incident”. “We had a wee incident at Babylon today. Everyone is fine. Thanks to everyone for their messages of support. Not sure of damage yet. We will be closed

for the rest of the day obviously, and will keep everyone updated as to when we reopen.” Staff said after an assessment they hoped to open their doors soon.

Parents are being urged to ensure their kids are confident in the water from a young age. Currently, staff from swimming pools across Wellington are hitting the pavement and encouraging parents to get their children involved in learn to swim classes. ‘Waterbabies’ classes are available at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie for children between the ages of six months to three years old. The classes focus on the enjoyment of water and allow tots to develop awareness and skills. Parents are also asked to join in lessons with their children. Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre programmes team leader, Selina Murray said 180 children were taking part in learn to swim programmes at Kilbirnie pools. “We’ll have more when the term starts to ramp up. We have been doing a big push out in the community,” she said. “A lot of people are not even necessarily aware that they can
